What this character heights hub covers
This hub collects sourced heights for 223 fictional characters from 15 franchises: Japanese anime and manga such as One Piece, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family; Western comics from Marvel and DC; films such as Star Wars, Avatar and The Lord of the Rings; and the Resident Evil games. About 75 of the most-searched characters have their own page with a long-form article, and every character can be added to the height comparison tool next to you, a celebrity, or a building.
Character heights are a surprisingly serious subject for fans. They settle arguments about who would win a fight, guide cosplayers choosing a role, and help artists keep a cast consistent. They also tend to be repeated online without a source. The catalog includes 151 male characters, 61 female characters and 11 entries recorded without a gender, a mix of creatures, droids and characters such as Groot, R2-D2, C-3PO, Hange Zoë and four of the Titans. Demon Slayer has the largest cast in the catalog with 25 characters, followed by My Hero Academia with 22 and Attack on Titan with 21.
This guide explains where the numbers on this site come from, why the same character can have different heights in different places, how fictional casts compare with real people, and how to use the pages.
Where the character heights come from
Every height on this site points to the page it was taken from, and wherever possible that page names an official primary source. The main kinds of primary source are:
- Databooks and fanbooks. Official companion books for manga and anime, which typically print a profile for each character with height, weight, birthday and other trivia. The Naruto databooks, the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook and the Attack on Titan guidebooks are examples cited on this site.
- Volume extras and creator Q&As. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda answers reader questions in the "SBS" corner of the collected volumes; Luffy's 174 cm and Nami's 170 cm come from SBS Volume 69. Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia print profiles in individual volumes.
- Publisher databases. StarWars.com's Databank lists dimensions for many characters. It gives Yoda as 0.66 m, Darth Vader as 2.03 m and Chewbacca as 2.28 m, all matching the figures used here.
- Official handbooks. Marvel and DC heights largely come from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and the DC Comics Encyclopedia, which list Captain America and Batman at 6′2″ (188 cm).
- Official statements and exhibitions. A few figures come from official social media posts or exhibition displays, such as Capcom's Resident Evil account for Lady Dimitrescu's 2.9 m (including her hat and heels) or the Chainsaw Man anime exhibition height chart.
In practice, most of these figures reach the web through fan wikis such as Wookieepedia, the One Piece Wiki or the Marvel Database, which cite the original books. Each character page says "according to [book], as cited by [wiki]" so you can see both. Of the 223 characters in the catalog, 201 have a named primary source; for the other 22, the wiki gives a height without naming its origin, and the page says so plainly. No height on the site is estimated from artwork, and characters are drawn as neutral silhouettes rather than official art.
Why the same character has different heights
Fans who compare sites quickly run into conflicting numbers. There are several legitimate reasons.
Time skips and ages. Many series follow characters from childhood or adolescence into adulthood. One Piece, Naruto and Attack on Titan all have major time skips, and official heights change with them. A height without an age or arc attached is incomplete.
Different editions and continuities. Manga, anime, games and live-action adaptations don't always agree, and Western comics reboot their continuities regularly. Marvel and DC heights are tied to specific universes, such as Earth-616 for Marvel's main comics.
Costume versus character. Some official heights include armor, helmets, hats or heels. StarWars.com's 2.03 m for Darth Vader describes the armored figure. Capcom's 2.9 m for Lady Dimitrescu includes her hat and heels. These are the official numbers, but they aren't the same as a barefoot human height.
Minimum or approximate values. Some profiles give a range or a floor. Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo is profiled as "over 190 cm," so 190 cm on this site is a minimum.
Rounding and conversion. Western sources often use feet and inches; Japanese sources use centimeters. Converting 6′2″ to 188 cm and back loses a little precision, which is why some characters show decimal centimeters such as Superman's 190.5 cm (6′3″).
How fictional casts compare with real people
Fictional characters are, on average, taller than real people. The table below shows the average listed height of adult-sized human characters in each franchise in this site's catalog (excluding giants, creatures and children).
| Franchise | Men: average | Women: average | Tallest character | Shortest character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DC Comics | 190.3 cm | 170.2 cm | Darkseid, 266.7 cm | Black Canary, 162.6 cm |
| Star Wars | 188.3 cm | 163.3 cm | Chewbacca, 228 cm | Grogu, 34 cm |
| One Piece | 186.2 cm | 183.0 cm | Big Mom, 880 cm | Chopper, 90 cm |
| Marvel | 185.6 cm | 175.2 cm | Groot, 701 cm | Wolverine, 160 cm |
| Attack on Titan | 181.4 cm | 162.3 cm | Colossal Titan, 60 m | Historia Reiss, 145 cm |
| My Hero Academia | 181.1 cm | 158.0 cm | All For One, 225 cm | Minoru Mineta, 108 cm |
| Jujutsu Kaisen | 180.2 cm | 162.5 cm | Satoru Gojo, 190 cm | Momo Nishimiya, 150 cm |
| Dragon Ball | 175.0 cm | 161.7 cm | Piccolo, 226 cm | Chiaotzu, 138 cm |
| Naruto | 174.9 cm | 161.4 cm | Jiraiya, 191.2 cm | Hinata Hyūga, 160 cm |
| Demon Slayer | 173.4 cm | 155.4 cm | Gyomei Himejima, 220 cm | Rui, 135 cm |
For comparison, US adults measured in the NHANES 2021–2023 survey average 175.1 cm for men and 161.2 cm for women. American superhero casts sit well above that: DC's men average about 15 cm above US men, and Marvel's women about 14 cm above US women. Comic artists have long drawn heroes with idealized, elongated proportions, and the official heights follow the art.
Iconic heroes and villains side by side
Fans often want to line up favorites from different universes. These are the listed heights for some of the most-searched characters on the site:
| Character | Franchise | Listed height |
|---|---|---|
| Thanos | Marvel | 200.7 cm (6′7″) |
| Thor | Marvel | 198.1 cm (6′6″) |
| Joker | DC | 195.6 cm (6′5″) |
| Superman | DC | 190.5 cm (6′3″) |
| Batman | DC | 188 cm (6′2″) |
| Captain America | Marvel | 188 cm (6′2″) |
| Iron Man | Marvel | 185.4 cm (6′1″) |
| Eren Yeager | Attack on Titan | 183 cm (6′0″) |
| Wonder Woman | DC | 182.9 cm (6′0″) |
| Spider-Man | Marvel | 177.8 cm (5′10″) |
| Goku | Dragon Ball | 175 cm (5′9″) |
| Monkey D. Luffy | One Piece | 174 cm (5′9″) |
| Naruto Uzumaki | Naruto | 166 cm (5′5″) |
| Wolverine | Marvel | 160 cm (5′3″) |
A few results surprise people. Wolverine, usually drawn as a powerhouse, is listed in the Marvel handbook at just 5′3″, shorter than every other hero in the table. The Joker is listed taller than Batman. And Goku and Luffy, two of the most famous anime protagonists, are within a centimeter of each other and close to the average American man.
Anime heights and the real-world average in Japan
Anime characters are often assumed to be short, but the official profiles say otherwise. Across the nine Japanese anime and manga series on this site, the 85 adult-sized male characters average about 177 cm and the 36 female characters about 164 cm. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, which pooled measured heights from more than 18 million people worldwide, estimates the average for Japanese men born in 1996 at 170.8 cm and for women at 158.3 cm, as shown on the average height in Japan page.
That makes the typical anime man about 6 cm taller than the typical Japanese man, and the typical anime woman about 5 cm taller than the typical Japanese woman. Series differ: Demon Slayer's mostly teenage cast sits closest to real life, while One Piece's adults, where Shanks is 199 cm and Trafalgar Law 191 cm, are much taller. A handful of fan favorites are notably short by design: Levi Ackerman is listed at 160 cm in an Attack on Titan guidebook, roughly 11 cm below the Japanese male average, and his height is part of his appeal. Tanjiro Kamado (165 cm) and Izuku Midoriya (166 cm) are protagonists of ordinary teenage height.
Giants, creatures and the extremes
Fiction lets creators play with scale in ways no real person can, and the catalog includes some extreme cases.
- The Colossal Titan from Attack on Titan is 60 m tall, according to the anime. The National Park Service gives the Statue of Liberty as 92.99 m from ground to torch tip, pedestal included, so the Colossal Titan would reach about two-thirds of the way up.
- Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) in One Piece is 8.8 m, and Kaido 7.1 m.
- Groot from Marvel is listed at 7.01 m.
- The Na'vi of Avatar average about 2.9 m, and Jake Sully's Na'vi body is 2.72 m, according to DK's Avatar: The Way of Water visual dictionary.
- At the small end, Grogu is 34 cm and Yoda 66 cm.
When a giant joins the comparison chart, the tool zooms out automatically and keeps small figures labeled with a pointer, so you can put a 160 cm person next to a 60 m Titan and still see both.
What a character's height means in real life
Translating a character's height into real-world terms helps make sense of it. Using the body-proportion model published by Drillis and Contini and reproduced in David Winter's biomechanics textbook, eye level sits at about 93.6 percent of stature and the shoulders at about 81.8 percent. So:
- A 160 cm person standing next to Gojo (190 cm) would have the top of their head at about Gojo's neck, since 160 is 84 percent of 190.
- A 175 cm adult next to Darth Vader (2.03 m) would have their eyes at about 164 cm, level with his shoulders.
- A 170 cm adult next to All Might (220 cm) would come up to about his upper chest, since 170 is 77 percent of 220.
You can check any of these in the comparison tool, including the 3D eye-level camera, which shows the scene from a chosen person's eye height.
Tips for cosplayers
Height is one of the first things cosplayers check when choosing a character, and a few practical points help:
- Compare barefoot to barefoot. Official character heights are usually body heights, so measure yourself without shoes before comparing.
- Remember that costumes add height. Boots, wigs with volume, helmets and hats all change your apparent height, just as Vader's armor and Dimitrescu's hat change theirs.
- Think about the group. For a group cosplay, the relative heights matter more than the absolute ones. Put everyone into the comparison tool with the characters they're playing to see which pairings look closest to canon.
- Don't let numbers decide for you. Plenty of memorable cosplays ignore canon height entirely; the numbers are a reference, not a rule.
How to use the character pages
Start from the franchise list to see a whole cast in one chart, for example the Jujutsu Kaisen height chart. Each character page then gives the official height in centimeters and feet and inches, the named source, a table comparing the character with the rest of the main cast, notes on time skips or edition differences, and a long-form article on how height figures in the story and design. One click on "compare" opens the character in the tool, where you can add yourself, friends, real celebrities or other characters.
If you spot a height that differs from an official source you own, the most useful thing is the exact citation: book title, volume and page. That's the standard every figure on this site aims to meet.
Frequently asked questions
Are anime characters taller than real people in Japan?
On average, yes. Among the adult-sized male characters from the nine anime and manga series on this site, the average listed height is about 177 cm, roughly 6 cm above the 170.8 cm NCD-RisC average for Japanese men born in 1996. The female characters average about 164 cm against 158.3 cm for Japanese women.
What is a databook or fanbook?
A databook or fanbook is an official companion book published alongside a manga or anime series. It usually includes character profiles with height, weight, birthday and blood type. Many Japanese series also publish heights in volume extras or Q&A columns such as One Piece's SBS corner.
Why is Darth Vader taller than the actor who played him?
StarWars.com lists Darth Vader at 2.03 m, which is the character in his armor and helmet. The suit, boots and helmet add height to the person inside, so the character's listed height and a performer's own height are not the same thing.
How tall is the tallest character on the site?
The Colossal Titan from Attack on Titan, at 60 m, is the tallest character in the database. That is about two-thirds the height of the Statue of Liberty from ground to torch.
Do characters' heights change during a series?
Often. Time skips, sequels and different editions can change a character's official height. This site uses the figure in the cited source and notes which arc or edition it refers to when that matters.
Why are some characters missing an exact height?
Some series never publish one. Where no official or well-cited figure exists, the character is left out rather than estimated, so the catalog covers 223 characters instead of every character in each franchise.
Where do the character heights come from?
Each height is taken from a cited reference page – mostly fan wikis such as the One Piece Wiki, Wookieepedia or the Marvel Database. Where that page names the original (a databook, fanbook, SBS corner, handbook or publisher profile), the character page says “according to [book], as cited by [wiki]”. Where the wiki names no primary source, the page says that too. We never estimate heights.
Can I compare an anime character with my own height?
Yes. Every character page has a “Compare” button that opens the height comparison tool with that character already added, so you can add yourself, friends, celebrities or other characters side by side in 2D or 3D.
Why do some characters have different heights on other sites?
Heights sometimes change between story arcs (for example after a time skip), between the manga and an adaptation, or between comic continuities. We use the value stated in the cited source and note the arc or edition where it matters.
Who is the tallest character listed?
Colossal Titan (Attack on Titan) is the tallest character in our database at 60 m (197 ft).
