How tall is Na'vi (average adult male)?

By Kashif Nazir KhanLast reviewed

Na'vi (average adult male) is 292.1 cm (9′7″) tall, according to an Avatar exhibition display, as cited by James Cameron's Avatar Wiki. An average adult male Na'vi of Pandora stands 9 ft 7 in; females run slightly smaller. This is a species average, not an individual character, so it is left out of “tallest character” rankings.

How tall are the Na'vi? The 292 cm figure

The Na'vi, the indigenous people of Pandora in James Cameron's Avatar films, are giants by human standards. The site lists an average adult male Na'vi at 292.1 cm (9′7″). That figure comes from an official Avatar exhibition display, photographed and cited by the James Cameron's Avatar Wiki, which states that the average male stands 9 feet 7 inches tall while females are slightly smaller.

Because the Na'vi are a species rather than a single character, this page treats the number as a population average. Individual Na'vi in the films are shorter or taller, and different official sources describe the species slightly differently. Wikipedia's overview of Pandora calls them approximately ten feet tall. The Avatar Wiki adds that Na'vi in the Australis region around the human base of Hell's Gate average about 3 meters for males and 2.8 meters for females, and that the maximum size ever observed is 3.9 meters, close to 12 feet 10 inches.

Those numbers cluster tightly. Ten feet is 305 cm, 3 meters is 300 cm, and 9′7″ is 292 cm. All three put the typical adult Na'vi somewhere between about 2.9 and 3 meters, roughly 1.6 to 1.7 times the height of an average adult human.

Where the different Na'vi heights come from

Cameron's production has released height information through several kinds of official material, and they don't all use the same reference point.

Source type What it says Figure
Official exhibition display (cited by the Avatar Wiki) Average adult male 9′7″ (292 cm)
Avatar Wiki, citing official guidebooks Average male near Hell's Gate about 3 m (300 cm)
Avatar Wiki, citing official guidebooks Average female near Hell's Gate about 2.8 m (280 cm)
Avatar Wiki, citing official guidebooks Maximum observed 3.9 m (about 390 cm)
Wikipedia overview Typical adult about 10 ft (305 cm)
Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary (DK) Jake Sully's avatar 8′11″ (272 cm)
Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary (DK) Neytiri 8′7″ (262 cm)

The guidebook figures trace mainly to James Cameron's Avatar: An Activist Survival Guide, the 2009 in-universe field guide, and to Avatar: A Visual Exploration. The individual character heights come from the DK visual dictionary for the 2022 sequel, written by Joshua Izzo.

There is a visible tension in that table. The named characters in the DK dictionary come out shorter than the species averages in the older guides. Neytiri, at 262 cm, is below the 280 cm regional female average, and Jake's avatar is about 20 cm below the 292 cm male figure the site uses. The site keeps 292.1 cm as the species entry because it is a direct statement of the average adult male, and it lists Jake and Neytiri separately at their DK heights. If you are comparing named characters, use their individual figures; if you want a generic Na'vi, 292 cm is the reference.

Na'vi bodies: built tall but light

Height is only part of what makes Na'vi physiology distinctive. The Avatar Wiki's physiology section, drawing on the Activist Survival Guide, describes a body plan designed around their size:

  • Long, slender proportions. Na'vi have longer necks than humans, narrow elongated waists, broad shoulders that form a V-shaped back, and limbs that are proportionally slightly longer.
  • Light for their height. Males near Hell's Gate average about 210 kg and females about 190 kg. For a 3-meter body that is lean, and the films show them as wiry rather than bulky.
  • Reinforced bones. Their skeletons contain a naturally occurring carbon-fiber reinforcement, which helps explain how such tall creatures survive falls from Pandora's giant trees.
  • Great strength. Despite their thin build, the wiki says they have roughly four times the strength of even the strongest human.
  • A balancing tail. Every Na'vi has a long, prehensile tail. The Activist Survival Guide explains it as a counterweight for their long torso and limbs, smoothing the stride at a run and helping with turns.
  • Small heads, big eyes. The Na'vi skull is small relative to body size, while each eye is about four times the volume of a human eye.

The design logic is clear. Pandora's forests are vast, and the Na'vi climb, ride and leap through them. A tall, light, reinforced frame with a counterbalancing tail makes that lifestyle plausible on screen.

Their hands shape their culture as well as their bodies. Native Na'vi have four digits on each hand and foot, including an opposable thumb and big toe, and the Avatar Wiki, citing the Activist Survival Guide, says their counting system is based on eight for that reason. Early Na'vi reportedly had no number words above sixteen, the total of their fingers and toes.

Growing up fast

Na'vi children grow quickly. The Avatar Wiki notes that Tuktirey, Jake and Neytiri's youngest daughter, is already 5′7″ (170 cm) at the age of seven, as tall as many adult human women. The wiki estimates that Na'vi reach cultural adulthood between about 15 and 17 Earth years and live around 30% longer than humans, though it notes that lifespan data is incomplete.

Heights of the Na'vi characters in the films

The DK visual dictionary for Avatar: The Way of Water gives heights for several named Na'vi, and the site carries them as separate entries. They show how much individuals vary around the species average.

Character Clan Height (site data) Difference from 292.1 cm average
Jake Sully (avatar) Omatikaya, later Metkayina refuge 271.8 cm (8′11″) −20.3 cm
Neytiri Omatikaya 261.6 cm (8′7″) −30.5 cm
Mo'at Omatikaya 261.6 cm (8′7″) −30.5 cm
Ronal Metkayina 261.6 cm (8′7″) −30.5 cm
Neteyam Omatikaya 248.9 cm (8′2″) −43.2 cm
Tsireya Metkayina 218.4 cm (7′2″) −73.7 cm

Neteyam and Tsireya are teenagers in the film, so their heights reflect Na'vi who are still growing. Neytiri, her mother Mo'at and the Metkayina leader Ronal share the same 262 cm listing, which suggests that the visual dictionary rounds adult women to a common figure. Jake, the only adult male in the group, is the tallest.

All of these individual heights sit below the older species averages. That doesn't make either source wrong; an average from an exhibition display and a set of figures from a character dictionary can describe different things. But it does mean the "ten-foot Na'vi" of popular description is closer to the upper end of what the named characters actually measure. A typical adult in the films stands somewhere between 2.6 and 2.9 meters.

Avatars: human-made Na'vi bodies

The films' human characters experience Pandora through avatars, lab-grown hybrid bodies that combine human and Na'vi DNA. The Avatar Wiki gives their typical adult size as nine to ten feet, or 2.75 to 3.0 meters, which places them right in the Na'vi range. Avatars keep some human traits, such as five fingers and eyebrows, and the wiki notes that children of avatar-Na'vi pairings can inherit them, as Lo'ak does.

Jake Sully, the paraplegic former Marine whose mind moves permanently into his avatar at the end of the first film, has an avatar listed at 272 cm in the DK visual dictionary. The same wiki entry lists his human body at about 5′9″, the height of actor Sam Worthington, which means Jake's avatar is more than a meter taller than the man controlling it. The difference is part of the first film's story: a man who cannot walk wakes up in a body nearly 3 meters tall and runs.

The Na'vi next to other giants

The site's character data includes several famous giants from other franchises. The average Na'vi male outsizes nearly all of them.

Character or person Franchise or field Height Difference from average Na'vi male
Na'vi average adult male Avatar 292.1 cm —
Lady Dimitrescu (with hat and heels) Resident Evil 290 cm −2 cm
Brook One Piece 277 cm −15 cm
Jake Sully (avatar) Avatar 271.8 cm −20 cm
Darkseid DC Comics 266.7 cm −25 cm
Neytiri Avatar 261.6 cm −31 cm
Chewbacca Star Wars 228 cm −64 cm
Piccolo Dragon Ball 226 cm −66 cm
All Might My Hero Academia 220 cm −72 cm

The Na'vi average is just ahead of Capcom's Lady Dimitrescu, whose 290 cm figure includes her hat and heels. It is 15 cm taller than Brook, the skeletal musician of One Piece, and 64 cm taller than Chewbacca, one of the most famous tall characters in film. What 292 cm means in human terms

Human height data makes the Na'vi scale concrete. The site's NCD-RisC figures, from the collaboration's 2016 eLife study of adults born from 1896 to 1996 in 200 countries, give these averages for the 1996 birth cohort:

Population Average man Na'vi male is taller by Ratio
United States 177.1 cm 115 cm 1.65×
Netherlands (tallest men in the dataset) 182.5 cm 109.6 cm 1.60×
Japan 170.8 cm 121.3 cm 1.71×

An average Na'vi male is about 115 cm taller than the average American man, more than the height of a typical six-year-old child stacked on top. Even the Dutch, who lead the world in the NCD-RisC data at 182.5 cm, reach only about 62% of Na'vi height.

The comparison with the tallest real people is also striking. Basketball's Yao Ming, listed at 229 cm, would stand 63 cm shorter than an average Na'vi male, roughly at the Na'vi's shoulder. Actor Sigourney Weaver, who plays Grace Augustine and later voices Kiri, is listed at 182 cm in the site's data, about 110 cm shorter than the species average.

To see these differences visually, put a Na'vi beside any real person in the height difference calculator.

Na'vi on screen, on stage and in theme parks

The Na'vi have appeared in all three Avatar films released so far: Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025). Wikipedia notes that the later films introduce new clans with distinct adaptations, including the ocean-going Metkayina, with fin-like limbs and broad tails, and the volcano-dwelling Mangkwan. The Avatar Wiki says the variation among Na'vi clans is comparable to the variety among domestic dogs, which helps explain why heights differ between regions.

Outside the films, the Na'vi have appeared in video games, novels and comics, and in Cirque du Soleil's touring show Toruk – The First Flight, where human performers in makeup played Na'vi characters. At Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida, the Pandora – The World of Avatar area includes the Avatar Flight of Passage ride and the Na'vi River Journey boat ride, Staging Na'vi at human scale in live shows is one reason performers can't match the canon height, which is reserved for the CGI characters on screen.
