Real people the same height as Shinobu Kocho
Shinobu Kocho's height: 151 cm
Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is listed at 151 cm (4′11″) and 37 kg (82 lb). The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki gives those figures in her character profile, along with an age of 18 and a birthday of February 24, which the anime's official account announced. The site uses the 151 cm figure and records the wiki infobox as its source. Fans trace the Hashira heights and weights to the profiles in Shueisha's official fanbooks, but the wiki does not attach a page reference to her height line, so the site labels it as wiki-sourced.
The wiki's own conversion is 4′11½″. 151 cm is 59.45 inches, just under the halfway point between 4′11″ and 5′0″, so rounding to the nearest whole inch gives 4′11″. Both numbers describe the same height. If you want to see how 4′11″ converts the other way, the site's 4′11″ to cm page shows the full working.
What makes Shinobu's height notable is not the number itself but its place in the story. She is the smallest of the nine elite swordsmen who lead the Demon Slayer Corps, and Demon Slayer builds her entire fighting style around that fact.
The shortest of the Hashira
The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki ranks the Hashira by height. Shinobu sits at the bottom of the list, and the spread above her is enormous.
| Hashira | Breathing style | Height | Difference from Shinobu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyomei Himejima | Stone | 220 cm | +69 cm |
| Tengen Uzui | Sound | 198 cm | +47 cm |
| Sanemi Shinazugawa | Wind | 179 cm | +28 cm |
| Kyojuro Rengoku | Flame | 177 cm | +26 cm |
| Giyu Tomioka | Water | 176 cm | +25 cm |
| Mitsuri Kanroji | Love | 167 cm | +16 cm |
| Obanai Iguro | Serpent | 162 cm | +11 cm |
| Muichiro Tokito | Mist | 160 cm | +9 cm |
| Shinobu Kocho | Insect | 151 cm | — |
The gap between Shinobu and Gyomei, 69 cm, is larger than the difference between an average adult and an average seven-year-old. Even the next-shortest Hashira, the 14-year-old Muichiro Tokito, is 9 cm taller than her.
The other woman among the Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, is 16 cm taller. The wiki's trivia notes that the two got along well as the only female Hashira after Kanae Kocho's death, and that Mitsuri sometimes taught Shinobu Western cooking. In group panels of the Hashira meetings, Shinobu is usually the smallest figure in the row, often drawn smiling beside much larger men.
How her size shapes the way she fights
Most Demon Slayers kill demons by cutting off their heads with a Nichirin blade. Shinobu cannot do that, and the story makes this explicit: she lacks the strength to sever a demon's neck. Instead of treating that as a disqualifying weakness, Demon Slayer gives her a completely different method.
- A stabbing sword. Her blade is cut away to a narrow, needle-like point, and its sheath is built to load poison into it. The wiki's trivia, citing the extras in Volume 16, says the chief of the Swordsmith Village, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, forged it personally because of its unusual shape.
- Wisteria poison. Shinobu is a pharmacist as well as a swordswoman. She developed poisons from wisteria, the flower demons fear, and her thrusts inject them directly.
- Speed. Insect Breathing techniques are named after butterflies, bees, dragonflies and centipedes, and all of them are fast, precise thrusts rather than heavy cuts.
Kyojuro Rengoku summed up the other Hashira's view of her in comments printed in the second official fanbook, as quoted on the wiki. He said he respected her for brewing poisons and fighting without hesitation despite her "disadvantageous size". That line is one of the few places where a canon source talks directly about a character's height as a handicap, and it frames it as something she overcomes, not something that defines her.
Her final strategy against Doma
Shinobu's small, light body becomes central to her last fight. Her older sister Kanae, the previous Flower Hashira, was killed by the Upper Rank Two demon Doma, who stands 187 cm in the site's data, 36 cm taller than Shinobu. For a year before the Infinity Castle battle, Shinobu consumed wisteria poison until her entire body was saturated with it, knowing she could not overpower Doma with her blade.
The wiki notes that Gotoge originally stated in the magazine chapter that she carried seventy times the lethal dose for a demon, then corrected the figure to seven hundred times in the collected Volume 19. Her plan relied on a 37 kg body carrying enough poison to weaken one of the strongest demons alive. Without spoiling the details, it is one of the clearest cases in the series where a character's physical smallness is turned into the key to victory.
Shinobu next to Tanjiro, Nezuko and the main cast
Outside the Hashira, Shinobu is still one of the shortest major characters in the series.
| Character | Height (site data) | Difference from Shinobu |
|---|---|---|
| Rui | 135 cm | −16 cm |
| Tamayo | 150 cm | −1 cm |
| Shinobu Kocho | 151 cm | — |
| Nezuko Kamado | 153 cm | +2 cm |
| Kanao Tsuyuri | 156 cm | +5 cm |
| Yushiro | 157 cm | +6 cm |
| Inosuke Hashibira | 164 cm | +13 cm |
| Tanjiro Kamado | 165 cm | +14 cm |
| Muzan Kibutsuji | 179 cm | +28 cm |
| Doma | 187 cm | +36 cm |
Nezuko Kamado is only 2 cm taller in her human form. Kanao Tsuyuri, Shinobu's adoptive younger sister and successor at the Butterfly Mansion, is 5 cm taller. Tanjiro Kamado, whom Shinobu treats and later guides, is 14 cm taller. When she first appears in full at Mount Natagumo, she is shorter than the boy she is lecturing, which adds to the unsettling contrast between her gentle smile and her ruthlessness toward demons.
Across franchises, her height is close to that of Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan, who is listed at 160 cm, and another fighter whose small frame is a running theme. Shinobu is 9 cm shorter than Levi.
What 151 cm means in the real world
To put Shinobu's height in context, the site uses NCD-RisC estimates of adult height by birth year, drawn from the collaboration's 2016 eLife study of 200 countries.
| Japanese women, birth cohort | Average adult height | Shinobu's difference |
|---|---|---|
| 1896 | 142.3 cm | +8.7 cm |
| 1926 | 149.9 cm | +1.1 cm |
| 1956 | 156.5 cm | −5.5 cm |
| 1996 | 158.3 cm | −7.3 cm |
The result is surprising. Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho era (1912–1926), when a woman of Shinobu's age would have been born around the end of the 1890s. Japanese women of that generation averaged roughly 142 cm, which means Shinobu, the shortest Hashira, would actually have been about 9 cm taller than the typical woman of her time.
Compared with modern women she is short. She is about 7 cm below the average Japanese woman born in 1996 and more than 12 cm below the average American woman of the same cohort (163.5 cm). The full Japanese trend, with its rapid twentieth-century gains, is on the site's average height in Japan page.

The Kocho sisters and the Butterfly Mansion
Shinobu's height is easier to understand alongside her family. She and her older sister Kanae survived a demon attack that killed their parents, and both joined the Demon Slayer Corps. Kanae rose to become the Flower Hashira before she was killed. Shinobu inherited both her sister's position at the top of the Corps and her home, the Butterfly Mansion, which serves as the Corps' hospital and rehabilitation center.
The third "sister" is Kanao Tsuyuri, whom the Kocho sisters rescued and adopted. The wiki's trivia, drawing on the second fanbook, relates a comic story about Shinobu proposing names for Kanao so strange that Kanae was left speechless. Kanao, at 156 cm, ends up 5 cm taller than Shinobu, and she becomes the one who carries her teacher's fight to its conclusion. The site has no official height for Kanae.
At the Butterfly Mansion, Shinobu treats wounded swordsmen who are almost all larger than she is. Her assistants Aoi Kanzaki and the three young girls Kiyo, Sumi and Naho help run the mansion, and Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke all recover there after Mount Natagumo. The image of the smallest Hashira caring for a ward full of bigger, bruised boys is one of the gentler running jokes of the series.
How the other Hashira see her
The second fanbook includes short comments from each Hashira about the others, and Shinobu's entries, as summarized on the wiki, show how she relates to colleagues who tower over her. She says she deeply respects Gyomei, the tallest of them all. She complains that Giyu should talk more, and admits that she clashed with Tengen when he tried to take Aoi and other Butterfly Mansion girls on a mission. She describes Mitsuri as cheerful and cute.
Height never comes up in her comments. The only Hashira who mentions size is Rengoku, and he mentions it to praise her. That consistency matters: in canon, Shinobu's colleagues treat her as an equal and a specialist, the person whose poisons and medical skills the Corps depends on.
In the comedic spin-off Kimetsu Academy, printed in the volume extras, Shinobu is president of the Pharmacology Club and the Fencing Club and wins a fencing championship, a playful nod to her thrusting sword style.
Design, personality and popularity
Shinobu's design draws heavily on butterflies. Her surname contains the reading of the kanji for "butterfly", and her haori resembles butterfly wings. The wiki points out that real monarch butterflies become poisonous by eating milkweed, which mirrors Shinobu turning her own body poisonous.
Her personality notes in the fanbooks give her more texture than her calm smile suggests. The first fanbook lists her hobby as telling ghost stories and her favorite food as ginger tsukudani. The second describes her as a natural airhead, notes that she dislikes furry animals, and says she keeps a pet goldfish named Fugu, the Japanese word for pufferfish, a famously poisonous fish. She also burned an indecent uniform that the Corps tailor Masao Maeda made for her and demanded a properly buttoned one.
She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese and Erika Harlacher in English. In the series' popularity polls she placed sixth in the first poll with 1,813 votes and fifth in the second with 8,787, which puts her among the most popular Hashira despite having very little screen time before the Infinity Castle arc.
Common questions about the figure
Fans sometimes ask whether Shinobu's height changes in the anime. It does not. ufotable's adaptation draws her at the same scale as the manga, and no anime-specific height has been released. Some merchandise and fan sites round her to 4′11″ and others to 5′0″; the canonical metric figure, 151 cm, is the one to use. Her weight, 37 kg, is one of the lowest of any adult swordsman in the series, which fits the story's explanation for why she fights with poison instead of force.
Frequently asked questions
