Real people the same height as Captain America

Captain America's official height: 6′2″ and 220 pounds

Marvel's reference books have been consistent about Steve Rogers for decades. The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, the publisher's own encyclopedia of characters, lists Captain America at 188 cm (6′2″) and 220 lb (about 100 kg), with blue eyes and blond hair. Those are the figures the Marvel Database carries in its profile of the main-continuity Steve Rogers (Earth-616), and they're the numbers this site uses for the Captain America page.

Handbook statistics are worth a word of explanation. Comic artists don't measure their figures, and a page drawn in 1941 by Jack Kirby and one drawn in 2020 will not show the same proportions. The handbooks exist to give writers, artists and readers a single reference point, so when Marvel says 6′2″, that is a deliberate editorial decision about who the character is: a tall man, but not a giant, built at the top end of what a human body can be rather than beyond it.

That distinction matters for Captain America more than for most heroes. Steve Rogers isn't an alien, a god or a mutant. His defining trait is that the Super-Soldier Serum took him to the peak of human performance, and his listed height sits exactly there: well above average, but a height plenty of real people reach.

Before the serum: how small was Steve Rogers?

The origin story turns on a change in size. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced the character in Captain America Comics #1, which went on sale in December 1940 with a March 1941 cover date. In that first story Steve is a frail young man turned away by the U.S. Army as physically unfit, who volunteers for a secret program and is transformed by Dr. Abraham Erskine's serum.

The comics have generally described the pre-serum Steve in words ("frail", "sickly") rather than numbers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was more specific. In Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), the skinny Steve is described as 5′4″ (about 163 cm) and 90 pounds, and the film shrank Chris Evans's body on screen, with theater actor Leander Deeny serving as a body double in some shots. After Erskine's serum and the Vita-Ray chamber, Steve steps out at roughly 6′2″.

Version Height Weight Source
Pre-serum Steve (MCU) about 163 cm (5′4″) 90 lb (41 kg) The First Avenger, as described on Wikipedia
Captain America (comics) 188 cm (6′2″) 220 lb (100 kg) Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe
Chris Evans (actor) 183 cm (6′0″) not listed Site data

A jump of about 25 cm is enormous. It's more than the gap between an average Japanese woman and an average Dutch man. Real bodies stop growing taller once the growth plates in the long bones fuse, usually in the late teens, so the serum's effect on height is one of the clearest signs that it is science fiction rather than an exaggerated steroid program. In the story the transformation is meant to look miraculous, and the height change is what sells it visually: the man who couldn't pass an Army physical is suddenly the tallest person in the room.

Captain America versus the Avengers

Within Marvel's lineup, 6′2″ places Steve in the upper middle. He's taller than most of the street-level heroes and shorter than the heavy hitters. Here is how the site's Marvel data compares the founding and best-known Avengers:

Character Height (cm) Height (ft/in) Difference vs Cap
Thanos 200.7 6′7″ +12.7 cm
Thor 198.1 6′6″ +10.1 cm
Hawkeye 190.5 6′3″ +2.5 cm
Captain America 188.0 6′2″ —
Iron Man 185.4 6′1″ −2.6 cm
Black Panther 182.9 6′0″ −5.1 cm
Spider-Man 177.8 5′10″ −10.2 cm
Black Widow 170.2 5′7″ −17.8 cm
Wolverine 160.0 5′3″ −28.0 cm

Two pairings stand out. Cap and Tony Stark are only about an inch apart, which suits a rivalry between near-equals. In the armor, of course, Iron Man stands taller. The other is Wolverine. At 160 cm, Logan is a full 28 cm shorter than Steve, and the two of them share a long history as World War II veterans in Marvel continuity. Put side by side, they're one of the more striking height contrasts on any Marvel team.

Against Thanos, the gap of about 13 cm by the handbook doesn't look like much on paper. The MCU, though, drew Thanos much larger than his comics listing, so the screen version of the fight looks far more lopsided than the comics numbers suggest.

Chris Evans and the screen Captain America

Chris Evans played Steve Rogers across The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012), The Winter Soldier (2014), Age of Ultron (2015), Civil War (2016), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019), plus cameos in other films. The site lists Chris Evans at 183 cm (6′0″), which makes the actor about 5 cm shorter than the comic-book figure.

That's normal for superhero casting. Filmmakers hire for presence, physical training and acting rather than matching a handbook entry to the centimeter, and costume boots, framing and the relative heights of co-stars do the rest. The MCU Steve is still clearly tall: among the original six Avengers on screen he reads as one of the taller members, and his on-screen bulk came from months of training rather than any digital enlargement. In the films, the only digital trick involving his size went the other way, in the pre-serum scenes where he had to look small.

The ending of Endgame sees Steve live out a full life in the past and return as an elderly man to pass the shield to Sam Wilson. The film doesn't comment on height, but it does close the circle the 2011 film opened: a story that began with a small man made large ends with that man grown old.

The shield as a size reference

Captain America's round shield gives a useful built-in scale. Marvel's handbook describes it as a concave disk 2.5 feet (about 76 cm) in diameter weighing 12 pounds. The original 1941 shield was a pointed heater shape; it became round in the second issue, after the publisher of a rival patriotic hero objected to the resemblance.

On a 188 cm man, a 76 cm disk is about 40% of his height. Held up in front of him, it covers roughly from the chin to the belt line, which is why artists can tuck the whole torso behind it. For a rough idea of the scale at home, 76 cm is close to the height of a standard dining table. The proportions are part of why the shield works visually. A larger disk would hide the character; a smaller one would look like a buckler and lose the iconic silhouette.

What 188 cm means in the real world

To see what Steve Rogers's height means for a real person, compare it with the men of his generation. In Marvel's main continuity Steve grew up in New York during the Great Depression. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's reconstruction of historical heights, used for this site's United States average height page, gives American men born in 1926 an average adult height of about 174.7 cm (5′9″). Steve's 188 cm puts him roughly 13 cm above his own cohort, a genuinely tall man in 1940s America.

Against today's averages the gap is smaller but still clear. The same dataset gives U.S. men born in 1996 an average of about 177.1 cm, so a modern 6′2″ man is still around 11 cm taller than typical. In practical terms, 188 cm means:

  • Standard doorways (about 203 cm in the U.S.) clear the top of his head with room to spare.
  • He would be one of the taller people in most offices but unremarkable on a basketball court.
  • Off-the-rack "tall" sizing usually starts around his height, so a real-life Steve would shop at the edge of regular sizes.

If you want to see the comparison rather than read it, the site's height comparison tool can stand Captain America next to any person or character, and the 6′2″ page breaks down how common that height is today.

Why Captain America is 6′2″ and not taller

Much of the design logic behind Steve Rogers is about restraint. Superman, created a few years earlier, was an alien who could do anything; Captain America was a soldier, and Simon and Kirby's hero needed to feel attainable to young readers during wartime. A listed height of 6′2″ fits that brief. It signals strength and leadership without tipping into the monstrous.

That's also why the handbook's 220 pounds is worth noticing. At 188 cm and 100 kg, Steve's body mass index works out to about 28, which a population chart would call "overweight", a reminder that BMI doesn't tell muscle from fat. Elite athletes in power sports routinely land in the same range. The numbers describe a heavyweight, densely muscled man rather than a lean runner, which matches how artists from Kirby onward have drawn him.

Peak human, not superhuman: how height fits his powers

Marvel's own descriptions of the Super-Soldier Serum are careful about where Steve stops. The Marvel Database, summarizing the handbooks, describes the serum as enhancing all of his bodily functions to the peak of human efficiency: strength, speed, stamina, reflexes and durability all pushed to the highest level a human could reach, but not into the realm of the Hulk or Thor. His height follows the same rule. A 6′2″ frame is tall, yet thousands of real soldiers, firefighters and athletes stand at exactly that height.

That restraint shapes how the character fights. Steve isn't drawn as a brawler who wins through mass alone. He relies on gymnastics, timing and the shield's ricochets, and artists often show him vaulting, rolling and leaping between opponents. A very tall, very heavy body would make those moves look clumsy. At 188 cm and 100 kg, he's big enough to absorb punishment and small enough to stay agile, a balance that real combat sports recognize too.

The serum's fragility has also been used to play with his size. The Marvel Database records storylines in which Steve's body lost the serum's effects and reverted toward his frail pre-serum state, before being restored. These arcs work as drama precisely because readers know the before-and-after so well: the small, sickly Brooklyn kid and the 6′2″ soldier are two halves of the same identity.

Frequently asked questions

How tall was Steve Rogers before the super-soldier serum?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pre-serum Steve is described as 5 ft 4 in (about 163 cm) and 90 pounds. The serum and Vita-Ray treatment in Captain America: The First Avenger take him to roughly 6 ft 2 in, the same height Marvel's handbooks give the comic-book character.

Is Captain America taller than Iron Man?

Yes. Marvel's handbook figures put Steve Rogers at 188 cm (6′2″) and Tony Stark at 185.4 cm (6′1″), so Cap has about 2.5 cm on Iron Man out of armor. Inside the suit, Iron Man usually ends up taller.

Is Chris Evans as tall as Captain America?

Not quite. The site lists Chris Evans at 183 cm (6′0″), about 5 cm shorter than the 188 cm (6′2″) the comics give Steve Rogers. Camera angles, boots and costume padding close most of that gap on screen.

How much does Captain America weigh?

The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe lists Steve Rogers at 220 pounds (about 100 kg). At 188 cm that is a heavy, muscular build, consistent with the serum pushing him to the peak of human physical potential.

How big is Captain America's shield compared to him?

Marvel's handbook describes the round shield as 2.5 feet (about 76 cm) across and weighing 12 pounds. On a 6′2″ man that disk covers roughly the distance from his chin to his waist, which is why it works as both cover and a throwing weapon.

Who is taller, Captain America or Thor?

Thor. Marvel lists Thor at 198.1 cm (6′6″), about 10 cm taller than Captain America's 188 cm (6′2″).

How tall is Captain America in feet?

Captain America is 6′2″ tall – that is 188 cm or 74 inches.

Is Captain America taller than average?

Captain America is 12.9 cm taller than the average US man (175.1 cm, CDC NHANES 2021–2023).

Where does Captain America rank among Marvel characters?
