Real people the same height as Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro Kamado's height: 165 cm
Tanjiro Kamado, the coal seller's son who becomes a Demon Slayer to cure his sister, is listed at 165 cm (5′5″) and 61 kg (134 lb). Those are the figures shown in his profile on the Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki, which fans trace to Koyoharu Gotoge's character data in Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook: Kisatsutai Kenbunroku. Shueisha published that first fanbook on July 4, 2019. It was the volume that gave readers detailed profiles of the main cast, including birthdays, ages and hobbies.
The anime by ufotable, now running from the 2019 TV series through the Mugen Train, Entertainment District, Swordsmith Village and Hashira Training seasons and the Infinity Castle films, uses the same proportions and does not publish separate heights. The site keeps the 165 cm figure and records its origin as the wiki infobox.
The wiki describes Tanjiro as a young man of average height with an athletic, muscular build. That fits the numbers: 165 cm and 61 kg is compact but solid, which suits a boy who spent his childhood hauling charcoal down Mount Kumotori.
Tanjiro's height across his age jumps
Demon Slayer covers about three years of Tanjiro's life, and the story skips forward early on:
| Point in the story | Tanjiro's age | Height notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 1, the attack on the Kamado family | 13 | No separate height given |
| End of chapter 5, after training under Sakonji Urokodaki | 15 | Drawn close to his adult profile |
| End of chapter 204, after the battle with Muzan | 16 | Profile height of 165 cm applies |
The two-year jump between chapters 1 and 5 is where most of his visible growth happens. He leaves home as a slight 13-year-old and returns from Mount Sagiri as a 15-year-old swordsman who passes Final Selection. After that, the series keeps him at a stable size. Fanbook profiles give one height for the whole main run, so the 165 cm figure best describes Tanjiro from the Final Selection arc to the end.
Gotoge never published a height for the 13-year-old Tanjiro of the opening chapter. Any figure you see for "young Tanjiro" is a fan estimate.
Tanjiro next to the main Demon Slayer cast
Tanjiro's closest companions are almost exactly his height, which is part of why the trio reads as a set of equals in group shots.
| Character | Height (site data) | Difference from Tanjiro |
|---|---|---|
| Nezuko Kamado | 153 cm | −12 cm |
| Kanao Tsuyuri | 156 cm | −9 cm |
| Inosuke Hashibira | 164 cm | −1 cm |
| Zenitsu Agatsuma | 164.5 cm | −0.5 cm |
| Tanjiro Kamado | 165 cm | — |
| Akaza | 173 cm | +8 cm |
| Giyu Tomioka | 176 cm | +11 cm |
| Kyojuro Rengoku | 177 cm | +12 cm |
| Muzan Kibutsuji | 179 cm | +14 cm |
| Genya Shinazugawa | 180 cm | +15 cm |
| Kokushibo | 190 cm | +25 cm |
| Tengen Uzui | 198 cm | +33 cm |
| Gyomei Himejima | 220 cm | +55 cm |
A few pairings stand out. Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira are within a centimeter of Tanjiro, so the three boys really are the same size. Nezuko Kamado, at 153 cm in human form, is 12 cm shorter, though her demon body lets her shrink to fit in the wooden box Tanjiro carries on his back, or grow taller when she fights.
Almost every adult swordsman Tanjiro meets is taller than him. Giyu Tomioka, the first Hashira he encounters, is 11 cm taller. Kyojuro Rengoku is 12 cm taller. The final enemy, Muzan Kibutsuji, stands 179 cm, 14 cm above Tanjiro, in his human disguise.
Designing an ordinary-sized hero
Tanjiro's everyday height is part of a deliberate design. According to Wikipedia's account of the character's creation, Gotoge's editor at Shueisha, Tatsuhiko Katayama, worried that the original one-shot was too dark for Weekly Shōnen Jump's young readers and asked for a "brighter" lead. Gotoge built Tanjiro as a kind, approachable older brother rather than a towering warrior, and later described the difficulty of fitting such a gentle hero into a grim story.
Katayama also felt the first design lacked impact. He suggested a distinguishing mark like the cross-shaped scar of Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin, and Gotoge added Tanjiro's forehead scar. The hanafuda earrings, which Katayama thought looked slightly feminine, stayed because they gave the character a memorable silhouette. Gotoge also discarded a cover for chapter 7 that showed Tanjiro smiling with his sword, redrawing it with a serious expression to match the tone. None of these decisions involved making him bigger. Tanjiro stands out through his face, his scar and his kindness, not his size.
That choice pays off visually. Because Tanjiro is drawn at an ordinary height, almost every Hashira and Upper Moon dwarfs him on the page, which keeps the reader aware that he is always fighting upward. When he finally strikes at Muzan alongside the surviving Hashira, he is one of the smaller figures in the frame.
How size shapes Tanjiro's fighting style
Tanjiro isn't built like the larger Hashira, and the story leans into that. His strengths come from senses and persistence rather than reach or mass.
- His sense of smell. Tanjiro can smell emotions, intentions and the "opening thread" of a fight. That lets a 165 cm swordsman find openings against much larger demons.
- His forehead. The first fanbook lists his hobbies as cleaning and headbutting, and notes he inherited his rock-hard forehead from his mother. Headbutts are a recurring weapon, especially against taller opponents, where he has to jump to land them.
- Water Breathing and Sun Breathing. Water Breathing is adaptable and flowing. Sun Breathing, which he inherits as the Hinokami Kagura dance, relies on stamina and technique. Neither depends on body size.
In the Infinity Castle battle against Akaza, Tanjiro faces a demon only 8 cm taller than himself. That is one of the few major fights where the two combatants are close in size, and the story focuses on technique, the "Transparent World", and Akaza's past rather than physical mismatch.
The Hashira scale: where Tanjiro fits
The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki ranks the nine Hashira by height, from Gyomei Himejima at 220 cm to Shinobu Kocho at 151 cm. Tanjiro, at 165 cm, would sit between Mitsuri Kanroji (167 cm) and Obanai Iguro (162 cm). In other words, he is shorter than six of the nine Hashira and taller than three: Obanai, Muichiro Tokito (160 cm) and Shinobu.
That middle position works for the story's message. The Demon Slayer Corps' strongest members range across 69 cm, and the manga never treats height as a measure of ability. Shinobu is the shortest Hashira and one of the most dangerous, while Gyomei is the tallest and the strongest.
Tanjiro in Taisho-era Japan
Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho era (1912–1926). A real boy of Tanjiro's generation would have been born around the turn of the twentieth century, and the population he grew up in was much shorter than modern Japan.
The site's NCD-RisC data gives Japanese men born in 1896 an average adult height of about 156.2 cm. Men born in 1926 averaged 161.9 cm, and men born in 1996 average 170.8 cm. The eLife paper behind these figures, covering adults born from 1896 to 1996 in 200 countries, shows Japan among the countries with the largest twentieth-century gains, with growth stalling for cohorts born after the early 1960s.
| Japanese men, birth cohort | Average adult height | Tanjiro's difference |
|---|---|---|
| 1896 | 156.2 cm | +8.8 cm |
| 1926 | 161.9 cm | +3.1 cm |
| 1956 | 169.3 cm | −4.3 cm |
| 1996 | 170.8 cm | −5.8 cm |
So Tanjiro reads two ways. Against the modern average height in Japan he is about 6 cm below the typical man. Against the men of his own era he would have been nearly 9 cm above average, a strong, healthy country boy rather than a small one. Gotoge's cast as a whole is drawn at modern heights, which is why the giants of the series, like Tengen and Gyomei, look even more striking once you place them in 1910s Japan.
Real people at Tanjiro's height
Among the people in the site's database, several well-known figures share Tanjiro's 165 cm. Actor Daniel Radcliffe is listed at 165 cm, and Bruno Mars, Selena Gomez and Diego Maradona are all listed within a fraction of a centimeter of it. A Tanjiro cosplayer at that height would match the character's canon height exactly, which is part of why he is a popular costume for people who feel too short for the Hashira.
The same figure also places Tanjiro neatly in his family. The manga shows his father Tanjuro as a frail, gentle man and his younger siblings as small children, and no official heights exist for them. Tanjiro is simply the eldest son who grew up strong enough to carry charcoal, and later his sister's box, over mountain roads.

Tanjiro on screen, on stage and in polls
Tanjiro is voiced in Japanese by Natsuki Hanae and in English by Zach Aguilar, with Satomi Satō and Allegra Clark voicing him as a small child. Hanae has said Tanjiro is easy to play because he says exactly what he thinks. ufotable based the look of his Water Breathing on Hokusai's ukiyo-e prints, mixing hand-drawn animation with CGI, and the fight against Rui was among the most labor-intensive scenes of the first season.
On stage, the role has passed through several actors, including Ryota Kobayashi, Shogo Sakamoto, Shohei Hashimoto and Fu Takahashi, according to the wiki's cast notes. As with any adaptation, the actors' own heights don't change the character's listed 165 cm.
Tanjiro won the series' first official popularity poll with 6,742 votes and placed fourth in the second with 9,045, as recorded on the Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki. He tops many reader rankings despite being one of the shorter swordsmen in the cast, which says something about how little height matters to his appeal.
Design notes and common mix-ups
Tanjiro's early design, shown in Gotoge's sketches, lacked the forehead scar and hanafuda earrings and was more androgynous. The finished design gave him the scar that later becomes his Demon Slayer Mark, and the earrings that link him to the Sun Breathing swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni. None of these changes involved height.
Online, you may see 165 cm rounded to "5′5″" or "5′4″". 165 cm is 64.96 inches, which rounds to 5′5″, and the site uses that conversion. You may also see confusion between Tanjiro and his descendant Kanata Kamado, who appears in the modern-day epilogue. That epilogue gives no height for Kanata, so Tanjiro's 165 cm is the only figure that applies to him.
