Real people the same height as Tengen Uzui
Tengen Uzui's height: 198 cm
Tengen Uzui, the former shinobi who serves as the Sound Hashira in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is listed at 198 cm (6′6″) and 95 kg (209 lb). The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki gives those figures in his character profile, along with an age of 23 and an October 31 birthday that the anime's official account announced. The site uses the 198 cm figure and records the wiki infobox as its source. Fans trace the height and weight data for the Hashira to the profiles in Shueisha's official fanbooks, the first of which, Kisatsutai Kenbunroku, appeared on July 4, 2019.
At 198 cm, Tengen is one of the largest humans in the series. The wiki describes him as very tall, broad-shouldered and extremely muscular, and the manga makes the most of it. In the Entertainment District arc, which ufotable adapted as the anime's 2021–2022 season, he dominates almost every panel he appears in, and his height is part of the larger-than-life showman persona he cultivates.
The conversion is simple: 198 cm is 77.95 inches, which rounds to 6′6″. Tengen is just short of two meters.
Second tallest among the Hashira
The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki ranks the nine Hashira by height. Tengen comes second, beaten only by Gyomei Himejima.
| Rank | Hashira | Height | Difference from Tengen |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gyomei Himejima (Stone) | 220 cm | +22 cm |
| 2 | Tengen Uzui (Sound) | 198 cm | — |
| 3 | Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind) | 179 cm | −19 cm |
| 4 | Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame) | 177 cm | −21 cm |
| 5 | Giyu Tomioka (Water) | 176 cm | −22 cm |
| 6 | Mitsuri Kanroji (Love) | 167 cm | −31 cm |
| 7 | Obanai Iguro (Serpent) | 162 cm | −36 cm |
| 8 | Muichiro Tokito (Mist) | 160 cm | −38 cm |
| 9 | Shinobu Kocho (Insect) | 151 cm | −47 cm |
The table shows how isolated Tengen is. There is a 19 cm gap between him and the third-tallest Hashira, Sanemi. Apart from Gyomei, every other Hashira is closer in height to Shinobu Kocho than to Tengen.
Tengen himself acknowledges the one man who outsizes him. In the second official fanbook, each Hashira comments on the others, and Tengen describes Gyomei as "the first guy I ever met who's bigger than me", adding that he is freakishly strong. It is one of the rare canon lines where a character comments directly on his own size, and it confirms that Tengen was used to being the biggest person in any room.
His comment on Kyojuro Rengoku is the opposite of rivalry: he calls the Flame Hashira a great guy who stands out even more than he does. For a man obsessed with being flashy, that is high praise, and it comes from someone 21 cm taller.
Tengen next to Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke
Tengen's largest role is as the leader of the Entertainment District mission, where he takes Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke into the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter to find his missing wives. The height gap between him and the three boys is about a third of a meter.
| Character | Height (site data) | Difference from Tengen |
|---|---|---|
| Inosuke Hashibira | 164 cm | −34 cm |
| Zenitsu Agatsuma | 164.5 cm | −33.5 cm |
| Tanjiro Kamado | 165 cm | −33 cm |
| Nezuko Kamado | 153 cm | −45 cm |
| Akaza | 173 cm | −25 cm |
| Muzan Kibutsuji | 179 cm | −19 cm |
| Doma | 187 cm | −11 cm |
| Kokushibo | 190 cm | −8 cm |
When Tengen first appears at the Hashira meeting, he dismisses Tanjiro Kamado with theatrical contempt, and later he literally scoops up two Butterfly Mansion girls under his arms before Tanjiro and the others confront him. The scene works visually because Tengen is 33 cm taller than the boys, big enough to treat teenagers like parcels.
In the Yoshiwara mission itself, Tengen sends the three boys into the pleasure houses disguised as girls, under the names Zenko, Inoko and Sumiko, while he searches on his own. The comedy of the disguises depends partly on scale: the brothel madams judge the boys by appearance, and Tengen, towering over all three, is the one doing the selling. A 198 cm former shinobi would be hard to hide in a crowded house, which helps explain why the mission relies on the smaller swordsmen to get inside.
Even the Upper Rank demons are smaller than him. Akaza, Upper Rank Three, is 25 cm shorter. Kokushibo, Upper Rank One, is 8 cm shorter. None of the Upper Ranks in the site's data match his height; the only character in the main cast who stands taller is an ally, Gyomei.
How height and size shape the Sound Hashira
Tengen's size fits everything about the way he fights and presents himself.
- Twin cleavers. He carries two huge Nichirin blades shaped like cleavers and joined by a chain. The wiki notes that he and Inosuke are the only known Demon Slayers who use two swords. Blades that heavy suit a 95 kg man with a long reach.
- Explosives. Sound Breathing combines swordplay with small explosive beads that detonate on impact, giving his attacks their booming, percussive feel.
- Musical Score. Tengen built a technique he calls the Musical Score, which uses his acute hearing to break an opponent's rhythm into notes and predict openings. It shows that his size is paired with analytical skill.
- Stealth. Despite his bulk, the wiki notes he moves silently enough to slip past Tanjiro's sense of smell and Inosuke's sense of touch, a reminder that he was raised as a shinobi.
A giant who chooses to be noticed
Tengen's catchword is hade, usually translated as "flashy". He wears a jeweled headband, colored nail polish and red eye makeup. He tells everyone he is a god of festivals. For a man who grew up in a shinobi clan where staying unseen was a matter of survival, standing out is a deliberate choice, and his 198 cm frame makes it easy.
His backstory adds weight to that choice. The wiki, citing the fanbooks, relates that Tengen was one of nine children, that three siblings died from their father's harsh training, and that the remaining children were made to fight each other masked to the death. Tengen left the clan with his three wives, Hinatsuru, Makio and Suma. He tells them their lives come before the mission, a striking order from a man who presents himself as untouchable.
The original, thinner Tengen
Tengen wasn't always drawn as a heavyweight. In the extra pages of Volume 11, Gotoge shared an initial design that was much less muscular and much thinner, with half his face covered in bandages and sleeves because, according to the author's joke, he didn't want his arms sunburned. The wiki says that early version gave off the air of a carefree bachelor.
The final design moved in the opposite direction: sleeveless, heavily muscled and decorated. That change is a good example of how Demon Slayer uses body size to communicate personality. The bandaged, thin prototype suggested a hidden, secretive ninja. The finished Tengen is a showman, and his height and build sell it.
What 198 cm means in the real world
Tengen would be exceptionally tall in any era, but the contrast with his own time is dramatic. The site uses NCD-RisC estimates of adult height by birth cohort.
| Japanese men, birth cohort | Average adult height | Tengen's difference |
|---|---|---|
| 1896 | 156.2 cm | +41.8 cm |
| 1926 | 161.9 cm | +36.1 cm |
| 1956 | 169.3 cm | +28.7 cm |
| 1996 | 170.8 cm | +27.2 cm |
Demon Slayer takes place in the Taisho era, so a 23-year-old Tengen would have been born in the 1890s. Japanese men born in 1896 averaged about 156 cm as adults, meaning Tengen would have stood roughly 42 cm, more than a foot and four inches, above the typical man of his generation. Even against the modern average height in Japan, he is 27 cm taller.
In the United States, where men born in 1996 average 177.1 cm, he would still be 21 cm above average, around the height of many NBA guards and forwards. Among real people in the site's database, Tengen's 198 cm is the same height listed for basketball great Michael Jordan.
To see that scale for yourself, put Tengen beside a real person in the height difference calculator, or compare him with other giants of anime in the 3D comparison tool.
The two giants of the Demon Slayer Corps
Tengen and Gyomei are the only Hashira taller than 180 cm, and the story uses them very differently. Gyomei, at 220 cm, is a gentle, blind monk who weeps easily and is recognized by the other Hashira as the strongest of them all. Tengen, at 198 cm, is loud, vain and theatrical. Both are physically enormous, but Gotoge gives one the role of a quiet anchor and the other the role of a showman.
The 22 cm gap between them is the largest gap between any two neighbors in the Hashira height ranking; the second largest is the 19 cm between Tengen and Sanemi. Put another way, the Corps' leadership has two giants at the top, a cluster of average-height swordsmen in the middle, and a group of smaller fighters at the bottom. Tengen's comment in the second fanbook that Gyomei was the first bigger man he had ever met fits that structure neatly: until Gyomei, nobody in Tengen's world had looked down on him.
In the comedic spin-off Kimetsu Academy, printed in the volume extras, Tengen becomes an art teacher nicknamed "Gangsta Sensei", who declares that art is an explosion and then demonstrates with dynamite. His size and swagger carry straight over into the school parody, where he is still the biggest, loudest adult in the building.
Tengen after the Entertainment District
Tengen's battle against the Upper Rank Six siblings Daki and Gyutaro costs him his left eye and left hand, and he retires from active duty. The wiki notes that he is one of only two known Demon Slayers to retire because of permanent injury rather than death or age, the other being Zenitsu's teacher Jigoro Kuwajima. After retirement he trades his uniform for a yukata and haori and covers his lost eye with a jeweled eyepatch.
His height, of course, stays the same, and he remains a presence in the story. During the Hashira Training arc he runs the first stage of training for the rank-and-file swordsmen, putting a 198 cm former Hashira in charge of conditioning drills. The fanbook lists his hobby as finding and visiting secret hot springs with his wives, and his favorite food as fugu sashimi.
He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Ray Chase in English. Tengen placed 13th in the series' second popularity poll with 3,436 votes, up from 37th in the first, when he had barely appeared, a jump that tracks the impact of the Entertainment District arc.
