How Marvel decided its heroes' heights
Marvel's heights are not guesses by artists. They come from a reference series created for exactly that purpose. According to the Marvel Database, editor in chief Jim Shooter came up with the idea of a guide that would give character statistics in the style of the backs of baseball cards, partly to answer the steady stream of readers' letters asking technical questions. Mark Gruenwald edited it, and the result was the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (OHOTMU), first published in 1982 as a 15-issue comic-format series.
Each entry gave a character's vital statistics, including height, weight, and hair and eye color, alongside an explanation of their powers. The handbook was revised many times:
| Edition | Years | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Original OHOTMU | 1982–1984 | 15 issues, including the Book of the Dead and Inactive |
| Deluxe Edition | 1985–1988 | 20 issues; major heroes got up to several pages |
| Update '89 | 1989 | 8 issues, adding supporting characters |
| Master Edition | 1990–1993 | 36 packs of loose-leaf pages, one per character |
| Modern handbooks | 2004 onward | Variable-length entries with art taken from the comics |
The Marvel Database notes that critics argued the handbook's detail limited what writers could do, and that Gruenwald replied that the data was simply the most recent information and could change. That matters for heights: a few characters' numbers have shifted between editions, and armored or transformed versions often get their own figures. The heights below are the Earth-616 (main comics universe) values that the Marvel Database lists today.
Marvel character heights compared
| Character | Height | Weight | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groot | 701.0 cm (23′0″) | 4.1 tons | Flora colossus |
| Thanos | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | 985 lbs | Titanian Eternal |
| Thor | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | 640 lbs | 5′9″ and 150 lbs as Donald Blake |
| Hawkeye | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | 230 lbs | |
| Captain America | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 220 lbs | |
| Doctor Strange | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 180 lbs | |
| Deadpool | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 210 lbs | |
| Doctor Doom | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 225 lbs | 6′7″ and 415 lbs in armor |
| Iron Man | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 225 lbs | 6′6″ and 425 lbs in armor |
| Punisher | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 200 lbs | |
| Black Panther | 182.9 cm (6′0″) | 200 lbs | |
| Ant-Man (Scott Lang) | 182.9 cm (6′0″) | 190 lbs | At normal size |
| Daredevil | 182.9 cm (6′0″) | 200 lbs | |
| Captain Marvel | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 165 lbs | Figure cited to Marvel.com |
| Storm | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 127 lbs | |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm (5′10″) | 167 lbs | Peter Parker |
| Black Widow | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 131 lbs | |
| Scarlet Witch | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 132 lbs | |
| Wolverine | 160.0 cm (5′3″) | 195 lbs | 300 lbs with adamantium skeleton |
Most of Marvel's heroes cluster between 6′0″ and 6′3″, so a few inches either way make a character stand out. Groot is the obvious outlier, but the more interesting cases are at the short end, Wolverine above all.
Wolverine: the deliberately short hero
Wolverine is the shortest character in the site's Marvel list at 160 cm (5′3″), and his height was a deliberate design choice. Wikipedia's history of the character says that artist John Romita established Wolverine's short stature at 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 m) to reflect the small size of real wolverines.
His weight tells the other half of the story. The Marvel Database lists him at 195 lbs without his adamantium skeleton and 300 lbs with it. At 5′3″, the adamantium figure is heavier than Captain America (220 lbs at 6′2″) and close to Doctor Doom in full armor (415 lbs).
On screen, the contrast is famous. Wikipedia notes that Hugh Jackman has played the character in ten films, from X-Men (2000) to Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). The site lists Jackman at 190.5 cm, which makes him about 30 cm taller than the comic-book Logan.
Thor, Thanos and the heavyweights
The tall end of the human-scale list is occupied by two cosmic figures. Thanos is 6′7″ (200.7 cm) and an astonishing 985 lbs. Thor is 6′6″ (198.1 cm) and 640 lbs. Neither weight is plausible for a human of that height. The Marvel Database lists Thanos as a Titanian Eternal and Thor as the Asgardian son of Odin, so neither is meant to be read as human.
Thor's entry has a second set of numbers. When he lives as the human Dr. Donald Blake, the Marvel Database lists him at 5′9″ and 150 lbs, a 9-inch and 490-lb difference from his Asgardian form. It's one of the largest changes in any Marvel character's official statistics.
Two armored characters reach the same heights when suited up. Doctor Doom is 6′2″ out of his armor and 6′7″ in it, level with Thanos. Iron Man is 6′1″ (185.4 cm) as Tony Stark and 6′6″ in his armor, equal to Thor, with his weight rising from 225 to 425 lbs. The site uses the unarmored figures.
| Character | Unarmored | Armored or transformed |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man | 6′1″, 225 lbs | 6′6″, 425 lbs |
| Doctor Doom | 6′2″, 225 lbs | 6′7″, 415 lbs |
| Thor | 6′6″, 640 lbs (Asgardian) | 5′9″, 150 lbs (as Blake) |
Captain America, Spider-Man and the street-level heroes
Captain America is listed at 6′2″ (188 cm) and 220 lbs, a broad, heavy build for an athlete. He shares that height with Doctor Strange, Deadpool and Doctor Doom, so the four would stand eye to eye.
Spider-Man is 5′10″ (177.8 cm) and 167 lbs, noticeably slimmer and shorter than most of the Avengers in the table, and 10 cm below Captain America.
The street-level heroes sit just below the 6′2″ mark: Punisher at 6′1″, and Black Panther and Daredevil at 6′0″, each at 200 lbs. Hawkeye is taller than all of them at 6′3″ and 230 lbs.
Among the women, Captain Marvel and Storm are both 5′11″ (180.3 cm). The Marvel Database cites Marvel.com's own profile for Carol Danvers's figures. Black Widow and Scarlet Witch are both 5′7″ (170.2 cm), with Storm notably lighter for her height at 127 lbs.
Groot and Ant-Man: heights that don't stay put
Two characters in the list make a single height figure almost meaningless, because changing size is their power.
Groot. The Marvel Database lists Groot, a Flora colossus from Planet X, at 23′0″ (701 cm) and 4.1 tons. That figure describes his normal adult size, but his story keeps resetting it. The database records that he has been seemingly killed on three occasions and each time regrew from a sprig or twig. At one point a villain called the Gardener used Groot's remains to plant an army of twisted Flora colossi, whose growth kept the original Groot from becoming bigger than a sapling until an ally restored him to his normal size. His listed powers include growing from a sprig to full size at high speed, growing beyond his normal size into a giant form, and, in one storyline, growing to planetary scale. So when the site shows Groot at 701 cm, it is showing the "standard" Groot, not the smallest or largest version.
Ant-Man. Scott Lang is listed at 6′0″ (182.9 cm) and 190 lbs, the same height as Black Panther and Daredevil. That is his height at normal size. According to the Marvel Database, his supply of Pym Particles lets him shrink to the size of an ant, about half an inch tall, while keeping the punch of a normal-sized man. The same entry notes that he can also grow, and that at heights of around 50 feet he can lift more than 50 tons. His daughter Cassie later took the name Stature after absorbing enough Pym Particles to grow and shrink at will.
| Character | Listed height | Smallest form | Largest form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groot | 23′0″ (701 cm) | A sprig or twig | Planet-sized |
| Ant-Man | 6′0″ (182.9 cm) | About ½ inch (ant size) | Around 50 feet, per the powers listing |
These examples show why the handbook gives one baseline figure per character. The Marvel Database even records a small detail from one Spectacular Spider-Man issue in which Ant-Man's helmet was reconfigured so that his default height was an inch taller than before, a reminder that for Marvel, height can be a setting.
Comic heights versus the actors
The Marvel Cinematic Universe and earlier films cast actors who often differ from their characters' handbook heights. Wikipedia's character articles identify the main live-action portrayals, and the site lists each actor's height on their own page.
| Character | Comic height | Actor | Actor's height (site) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wolverine | 160.0 cm | Hugh Jackman | 190.5 cm | Actor 30.5 cm taller |
| Iron Man | 185.4 cm | Robert Downey Jr. | 173 cm | Actor 12.4 cm shorter |
| Captain America | 188.0 cm | Chris Evans | 183 cm | Actor 5 cm shorter |
| Deadpool | 188.0 cm | Ryan Reynolds | 188 cm | Same height |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm | Tom Holland | 173 cm | Actor 4.8 cm shorter |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm | Tobey Maguire | 172.7 cm | Actor 5.1 cm shorter |
Ryan Reynolds is the only exact match in the table: Wikipedia notes that he developed an interest in playing Deadpool after reading the comic and eventually played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool, Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Robert Downey Jr., who starred in the 2008 film Iron Man, is the biggest shortfall among the heroes. Thanos was primarily played by Josh Brolin via motion capture, according to Wikipedia, so the actor's own height did not fix the character's size on screen.
Caveats when using Marvel heights
A few points keep comparisons honest:
- Earth-616 only. Marvel publishes many alternate universes, and the Marvel Database keeps separate entries for each version of a character. Everything on this page is the main-universe (Earth-616) figure. Film versions are separate characters with their own actors.
- Handbook data can change. As the Marvel Database recounts, Mark Gruenwald answered critics by saying the handbook described the most recent data, which was subject to change. A height in one edition is not guaranteed to survive the next.
- The baseline, not the costume. Armored, transformed and size-changed forms get their own figures. The site always uses the baseline: Tony Stark out of the armor, Thor in his Asgardian form, Scott Lang at normal size.
- Imperial originals. The handbook gives heights in feet and inches. The site converts them exactly, which is why many Marvel heights end in .4, .9 or .3 cm (6′1″ is 185.4 cm, 6′0″ is 182.9 cm, 5′11″ is 180.3 cm). You can check any of them with the height converter.
How Marvel heights compare with real people
Most of the main Marvel heroes are American, so the most useful benchmark is the United States. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's 2016 study of adult height, published in eLife, gives American men born in 1996 a mean of 177.1 cm and women 163.5 cm, the figures used on the site's average height in the United States page.
By that measure, Spider-Man at 177.8 cm is almost exactly average for an American man, Captain America and Iron Man are clearly tall, and Wolverine is about 17 cm below average. Among the women, Captain Marvel and Storm are roughly 17 cm above the American average, and Black Widow and Scarlet Witch about 7 cm above it.
To try a comparison yourself, put any hero next to your own height in the 3D height comparison tool, or work out the gap between two characters, such as Thanos and Wolverine (40.7 cm), with the height difference calculator.
