How One Piece heights became official
Eiichiro Oda's One Piece has run in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 1997 and had reached 115 collected volumes by mid-2026, according to Wikipedia. Its cast is enormous in both senses: hundreds of named characters, ranging from Tony Tony Chopper at 90 cm to Big Mom at nearly 9 meters. Official heights for that cast come from two main places.
The SBS column. Starting with Volume 4, most collected volumes include a question-and-answer column in which Oda replies to fan letters. The One Piece Wiki explains that this is where the Straw Hats' ages were first revealed, along with many facts that aren't stated in the chapters. Heights followed: Nami's in Volume 10, Ace's in Volume 48, Mihawk's and Hancock's in Volume 58, Law's in Volume 68, and post-timeskip heights for the whole crew in Volume 69.
The Vivre Cards. Since September 4, 2018, the series' databook has taken the form of Vivre Card: One Piece Visual Dictionary, sets of B6-sized, hole-punched cards meant to be kept in a ring binder. The wiki says promotional material promised more than 400 characters, and an editor described the series as "never-ending." Heights for Kaido, Whitebeard, Shanks and Buggy come from the cards.
Because the cards are updated online, a few Vivre Card heights have been corrected after release. The wiki records Donquixote Rosinante being revised from 435 cm to 293 cm, Marianne (Miss Goldenweek) from 152 cm to 145 cm, and the giant Little Oars Jr. from 38 meters to 60 meters.
Inside the SBS and the Vivre Cards
The two sources work quite differently. The One Piece Wiki describes the SBS as a column split into one-page installments placed between chapters of a volume, so it doubles as a chapter break. Oda's answers can be short and flippant or long and detailed, and the wiki notes that some facts became official simply because a fan suggested them and Oda agreed. Up to Volume 49, Oda drew each column's "SBS" header himself; after a reader's request in that volume, the headers switched to fan-submitted art.
The Vivre Cards are closer to a traditional databook. Each card is roughly the size of a manga page, printed on both sides and punched for a binder, so readers can arrange the "book" in any order. According to the wiki, they are made by the same company, Caramel Mama, that produced the series' earlier databooks. Some cards are skill cards, which show the user's height compared with Luffy's, a small detail that makes Luffy the series' unofficial measuring stick.

The Straw Hats before and after the timeskip
The two-year timeskip in the middle of the story gave Oda a reason to publish a second set of heights, and almost the whole crew grew. Here are the figures the One Piece Wiki lists for each era.
| Straw Hat | Debut | After timeskip | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey D. Luffy | 172 cm (age 17) | 174 cm (age 19) | +2 cm |
| Roronoa Zoro | 178 cm (19) | 181 cm (21) | +3 cm |
| Sanji | 177 cm (19) | 180 cm (21) | +3 cm |
| Usopp | 174 cm (17) | 176 cm (19) | +2 cm |
| Nami | 169 cm (18) | 170 cm (20) | +1 cm |
| Nico Robin | 188 cm (28) | 188 cm (30) | none |
| Franky | 225 cm (34) | 240 cm (36) | +15 cm |
| Brook | 266 cm (88) | 277 cm (90) | +11 cm |
| Jinbe | 301 cm (44) | 301 cm (46) | none |
| Tony Tony Chopper | — | 90 cm (hybrid form) | — |
The human members grew modestly, as you'd expect of people aged 17 to 21. Zoro and Sanji both added 3 cm, and the wiki notes that Sanji's growth kept him nearly the same height as Zoro. Robin, already an adult, stayed at 188 cm.
The big jumps belong to the non-standard bodies. Franky, who rebuilt his own body with modifications, went from 225 cm to 240 cm; the wiki explains that before his accident and modifications he was much smaller than his cyborg self. Brook, a living skeleton, somehow gained 11 cm while already in his late 80s. Nami's figure, meanwhile, has been stated three times: 169 cm in SBS Volume 10, again 169 cm in Volume 37, and 170 cm after the timeskip in Volume 69.
The tallest and shortest of the crew
Jinbe, at 301 cm, is the tallest Straw Hat, followed by Brook and Franky. The wiki describes Robin as the fourth-tallest member at 188 cm, meaning she is the tallest crew member of ordinary human proportions, 7 cm taller than Zoro. At the other end, Chopper's 90 cm hybrid form makes him the smallest.
Luffy, the captain, is the third-shortest member after Chopper and Nami, at 174 cm.
The giants: Big Mom, Kaido, Whitebeard and Blackbeard
The four largest humans in the site's list are all pirates with enormous bounties.
Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) is listed at 880 cm, just under 29 feet. The One Piece Wiki calls this the largest known height for any human in the series. It adds that she was so big even at age five that she was mistaken for a giant, and that as an adult she could hold the 277 cm Brook in her hand.
Kaido is 710 cm according to his Vivre Card. The wiki describes him as top-heavy, with a massively muscled torso and arms and comparatively light legs, his feet much smaller than his hands.
Whitebeard (Edward Newgate) is 666 cm. Unlike other very large humans in the series, the wiki notes, he was well proportioned.
Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach) is 344 cm, and the wiki points out a neat detail: that is exactly twice Luffy's pre-timeskip height of 172 cm.
| Giant | Height | Multiple of Luffy (174 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Big Mom | 880 cm | 5.1× |
| Kaido | 710 cm | 4.1× |
| Whitebeard | 666 cm | 3.8× |
| Blackbeard | 344 cm | 2.0× |
Shanks, Buggy, Mihawk and the Warlords
Not every top-tier character is a giant. Shanks is 199 cm at age 39, according to his Vivre Card. Buggy is 192 cm at the same age. The wiki also gives both characters' heights at 13: Shanks at 132 cm and Buggy at 130 cm. Shanks grew 67 cm between 13 and 39, and Buggy 62 cm.
Dracule Mihawk is 198 cm both at his debut (age 41) and after the timeskip (43), only 1 cm shorter than Shanks.
Boa Hancock and Trafalgar Law are both 191 cm. The wiki observes that this ties them as the shortest of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, which says a lot about how large the rest of the Warlords are.
Portgas D. Ace is 185 cm at 20, a height revealed in SBS Volume 48. As a boy, the wiki lists him at 103 cm at age 10; Luffy, at his first appearance aged 7, was 91 cm.
Childhood heights on record
Oda has also given heights for several characters as children. Collected together, they show how much these characters grew.
| Character | Childhood height | Adult height | Growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey D. Luffy | 91 cm at 7 | 174 cm at 19 | +83 cm |
| Portgas D. Ace | 103 cm at 10 | 185 cm at 20 | +82 cm |
| Shanks | 132 cm at 13 | 199 cm at 39 | +67 cm |
| Buggy | 130 cm at 13 | 192 cm at 39 | +62 cm |
Luffy's 91 cm figure describes him at his very first appearance in the story, aged 7. Ace is 12 cm taller at 10 than Luffy at 7, and he stays ahead as an adult, finishing 11 cm taller than Luffy. Shanks and Buggy, measured at the same age as boys, were just 2 cm apart, but by 39 the gap had grown to 7 cm.
Big Mom is the extreme case. The wiki has no number for her childhood, but it says that at five she was already as tall as giant children and was mistaken for a giant herself.
Comparing One Piece heights with real people
The manga is Japanese, so a Japanese benchmark is a natural reference point. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's 2016 study of adult height, published in eLife, gives Japanese men born in 1996 a mean of 170.8 cm and women 158.3 cm, the figures on the site's average height in Japan page.
| Character | Height | vs Japanese average (same sex) |
|---|---|---|
| Zoro | 181 cm | +10.2 cm |
| Sanji | 180 cm | +9.2 cm |
| Usopp | 176 cm | +5.2 cm |
| Luffy | 174 cm | +3.2 cm |
| Nami | 170 cm | +11.7 cm |
| Robin | 188 cm | +29.7 cm |
| Boa Hancock | 191 cm | +32.7 cm |
The male Straw Hats are all a little to moderately above the Japanese male average, with Luffy closest to it. The women are a different story: Nami is almost 12 cm above the female average, and Robin and Hancock, at 188 and 191 cm, would be exceptionally tall women anywhere. In One Piece, two of the most prominent women are taller than every male Straw Hat of ordinary human build.
Tips for comparing One Piece characters
- Check the era. Pre- and post-timeskip figures differ, sometimes by 15 cm (Franky). The site uses post-timeskip heights.
- Ages matter. Shanks, Buggy, Ace and Luffy all have childhood heights on record, so make sure you're comparing adults with adults.
- Vivre Card figures can be revised. If an old figure doesn't match, check whether the card was corrected online.
- Forms matter. Chopper's 90 cm is specifically listed for his hybrid form, so other forms aren't covered by that figure.
You can line up any of these characters, from Chopper to Big Mom, in the 3D height comparison tool to see the full scale of Oda's world.
