Real people the same height as Darth Vader
Darth Vader's official height: 2.03 meters in armor
The canonical height for Darth Vader is 203 cm (6′8″). That figure appears on the official StarWars.com Databank entry for Vader and in Lucasfilm-licensed reference books such as The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia – Join the Battle!, which is the source Wookieepedia cites when it records the measurement. The important detail is that 2.03 meters describes Vader in his armor. It is the height of the black-clad figure that strides through the corridor of the Tantive IV at the start of A New Hope, helmet, boots and all.
Lucasfilm's reference material lists the man inside the suit separately. Anakin Skywalker as an adult is given as 188 cm (6′2″) on the StarWars.com encyclopedia. The 15 cm gap between the two numbers is a design choice rather than a growth spurt. Vader's helmet rises well above the crown of the head, his boots have thick soles, and the shoulder armor and cape broaden the silhouette so the character reads as larger than any ordinary officer around him.
The same sources give Vader a mass of 120 kg (about 265 lb) in armor, a figure from Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know. That number, too, describes the whole life-support system: chest box, cybernetic limbs, breathing apparatus and the man.
Anakin to Vader: height at every stage
Few fictional characters have their height documented at as many points in their life as Anakin Skywalker. Licensed books track him from slave boy to Sith Lord, and the numbers make a clear story.
| Stage | Era | Height | Source cited on Wookieepedia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anakin, age 9 (The Phantom Menace) | 32 BBY | 135 cm (4′5″) | Star Wars Journeys: The Phantom Menace |
| Anakin, adult Jedi | 22–19 BBY | 188 cm (6′2″) | StarWars.com Encyclopedia |
| Darth Vader, in armor | 19 BBY–4 ABY | 203 cm (6′8″) | The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia; StarWars.com Databank |
Anakin was born in 41 BBY on Tatooine, according to Star Wars: Timelines. The 1.35-meter figure fits a nine-year-old boy: it is close to the median height for a child of that age today. By the time of Attack of the Clones he had become a lanky young man of 1.88 meters, taller than his master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is listed at 1.81 m. After his duel on Mustafar in 19 BBY, Palpatine had him encased in the armor that StarWars.com describes as keeping him alive, and from that point the official height becomes 2.03 meters. He wore the suit until his death aboard the second Death Star in 4 ABY.
The cybernetic replacement of his legs complicates any attempt to work out a "true" height for Vader without the suit. The films show his limbs as mechanical, so the armor is not simply clothing laid over a 1.88-meter body. Reference books sidestep the question by giving one number for Anakin and one for the suited Vader, and that is the convention this site follows: our headline figure is the armored one, because that is the figure audiences see on screen.
The actors who gave Vader his size
Vader's on-screen presence was built from several performers, and their own heights explain a lot about how tall the character looks in each era.
David Prowse and the original trilogy
The body in the suit from 1977 to 1983 belonged to David Prowse, a British weightlifter and bodybuilder usually listed at 6′6″ (198 cm). He won the British heavyweight weightlifting title in 1962 and represented England at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth that year. Wikipedia's article on Vader notes that he was also offered the part of Chewbacca and turned it down because he preferred to play the villain. Add the boots and the domed helmet to Prowse's natural height and the costumed figure on set stood well over two meters, which is why the official 2.03-meter number feels right when you watch the original films.
Prowse spoke Vader's lines on set, but George Lucas wanted a deeper voice than Prowse's West Country accent, so James Earl Jones recorded the dialogue. For the most demanding lightsaber duels in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the fencing master Bob Anderson, a former Olympic fencer, took over inside the costume. Anderson was shorter than Prowse, and attentive viewers sometimes note that Vader seems slightly less imposing in the fights on Cloud City than in the throne room scenes.
When Rolling Stone reported Prowse's death in November 2020, it quoted George Lucas crediting him with bringing a physicality to Vader that the character needed. That physicality was as much about bulk and stance as height: Prowse's weightlifter frame filled the suit in a way a slimmer actor could not.
Sebastian Shaw, Hayden Christensen and later performers
In Return of the Jedi, the unmasked Anakin was played by the veteran stage actor Sebastian Shaw. Hayden Christensen played the adult Anakin in Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), wore the suit in the final scenes of Revenge of the Sith, and returned as Vader in the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi and as Anakin in Ahsoka (2023). For Rogue One (2016), the suit was worn by Spencer Wilding and Daniel Naprous. James Earl Jones voiced Vader across the films until his retirement from the role was confirmed in 2022, after which his voice was recreated digitally for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Costume design shaped the height as well. Concept artist Ralph McQuarrie combined a breathing mask with a samurai-style helmet, costume designer John Mollo assembled the outfit from references including a German military helmet and a gas mask, and sculptor Brian Muir produced the helmet and armor. The tall, flared helmet is the single biggest reason Vader reads as taller than the actor inside.
Darth Vader compared with the Star Wars cast
Using the canonical figures in this site's character database, here is how Vader measures up against other characters in the Star Wars roster.
| Character | Height | Difference from Vader (203 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Chewbacca | 228 cm (7′6″) | 25 cm taller |
| Mace Windu | 192 cm (6′4″) | 11 cm shorter |
| Kylo Ren | 189 cm (6′2″) | 14 cm shorter |
| Boba Fett | 183 cm (6′0″) | 20 cm shorter |
| Obi-Wan Kenobi | 181 cm (5′11″) | 22 cm shorter |
| Han Solo | 180 cm (5′11″) | 23 cm shorter |
| Luke Skywalker | 172 cm (5′8″) | 31 cm shorter |
| Leia Organa | 155 cm (5′1″) | 48 cm shorter |
| Yoda | 66 cm (2′2″) | 137 cm shorter |
| Grogu | 34 cm (1′1″) | 169 cm shorter |
The family comparisons are the most striking. Vader's son Luke Skywalker is listed at 1.72 m, so in the famous duel at the end of The Empire Strikes Back the father stands about 31 cm taller. Even out of armor, Anakin would be 16 cm taller than Luke. Leia, at 1.55 m, would have looked up nearly half a meter to her father during her interrogation on the Death Star. His grandson Kylo Ren, at 1.89 m, is the closest human relative in height, and the sequel trilogy leans into that visual echo with Kylo's dark mask and robes.
Only a few major characters stand taller than Vader. Chewbacca at 2.28 m is the obvious one, and the scene in A New Hope where the two never quite meet face to face is one reason fans love comparing them. At the other end of the scale, Yoda, Vader's old Jedi superior, is listed at just 66 cm.
Vader in the Clone Wars era and beyond
The 2.03-meter figure is consistent across every era in which Vader appears, from the final minutes of Revenge of the Sith through Rogue One, A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. That consistency is worth noting, because Vader has been played by different bodies in different decades. Hayden Christensen, who wore the suit in the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi series, is a slimmer performer than David Prowse, yet the production kept the silhouette the same height and bulk so the character would match the films of the 1970s and 1980s. The same is true of Rogue One, where Spencer Wilding and Daniel Naprous shared the role and the hallway massacre at the end of the film shows Vader at his most physically overwhelming.
The 2023 series Ahsoka returns to the question from the other side, with Christensen appearing as Anakin out of armor in scenes set in the Clone Wars era, and Return of the Jedi ends with Anakin's Force spirit standing beside Obi-Wan and Yoda. In those scenes, the reference books' 1.88-meter figure for Anakin is the one that applies. The two numbers are therefore not in conflict; they describe two forms of the same person, and Lucasfilm's licensed encyclopedias have kept them separate for more than a decade.
For fans building costumes, the Databank figure is also a practical target. A cosplayer of average height can reach Vader's 6′8″ only with considerable lift from the helmet and boots, which is exactly how the original production solved the problem for an actor who was already 6′6″.
How Vader's height works in the story and design
Lucasfilm has never published a statement saying Vader was deliberately made 2.03 meters tall, but the production history shows that size was central to the character. Lucas cast a heavyweight weightlifter rather than a conventional actor. The costume team stacked height into the helmet and boots. The camera regularly shoots Vader from a low angle, so he looms over the frame, and he is often staged beside shorter Imperial officers and stormtroopers, which exaggerates the gap.
Within the story, the armor is a prison as well as a weapon. StarWars.com describes it as the suit that kept him alive after Mustafar, with mechanical lungs producing his "ominous breathing sound." The height that makes Vader intimidating is therefore tied to the injuries that diminished Anakin. The moment in Return of the Jedi when Luke removes the helmet shows a frail, ordinary-sized man, and the contrast between the 2.03-meter Sith Lord and the dying father underneath is one of the saga's most effective visual ideas.
What 6′8″ means in the real world
At 203 cm, Vader is far taller than almost any man you will meet. NCD-RisC estimates that men born in 1996 in the United States average about 177 cm, so Vader in armor stands roughly 26 cm (10 inches) above the typical American man. Our average height by country pages show that even in the tallest nation, the Netherlands, men born in 1996 average 182.5 cm, which still leaves them about 20 cm short of him.
Unarmored, Anakin's 188 cm is tall but realistic: well above average, though not unusual for an athlete or actor. That is a useful way to think about the character. Anakin is a tall man; Vader is a costume engineered to look like a giant. If you want to see either figure next to yourself, the height comparison tool lets you add Vader at 203 cm and Anakin at 188 cm side by side, and the height difference calculator will show exactly how many centimeters separate you from the Dark Lord.
Why some sites list different heights
You will find a range of numbers online, and nearly all of them trace back to one of three confusions:
- Mixing up Anakin and Vader. Sites that quote 1.88 m are giving Anakin's unarmored height, while 2.03 m is the suited figure.
- Using the actor instead of the character. David Prowse's 1.98 m is sometimes quoted as Vader's height, but it leaves out the helmet and boots.
- Older Expanded Universe material. Pre-2014 Legends books occasionally gave different numbers. The current canon figure on StarWars.com is 2.03 m, and that is the one we use.
Where a source is unclear, we follow the Databank, because it is Lucasfilm's own reference and it agrees with the licensed encyclopedias. The result is a clean pair of numbers: 188 cm for the man, 203 cm for the legend.
Frequently asked questions
Is Darth Vader taller than Anakin Skywalker?
Yes. Official reference material lists Anakin at 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) as an adult and Vader at 2.03 m (6 ft 8 in). The extra 15 cm comes from the armor, the thick-soled boots and the tall helmet, not from Anakin himself growing.
How tall was David Prowse, the actor inside the Vader suit?
David Prowse, the British weightlifter who physically played Vader in the original trilogy, is usually given as 6 ft 6 in (198 cm). With the helmet and boots he stood well over two meters on set.
Why was Darth Vader played by more than one person?
