Luffy's official height and where it comes from
Monkey D. Luffy stands 174 cm (5′9″) in his post-timeskip form, the version of the character readers have followed since chapter 598. That number does not come from fan estimates or screen measurements. It comes from Eiichiro Oda himself, through two channels that the One Piece fandom treats as canon: the SBS question corner printed in the collected volumes, and Shueisha's official databooks.
The first post-timeskip figure appeared in One Piece Blue Deep: Characters World, the fifth databook, released on March 2, 2012. Oda then confirmed it in SBS Volume 69, answering a young reader who asked for the "current profiles" of every Straw Hat. In that reply Oda noted that the series had been running for fifteen years, and he described the list as the first official release of the crew's heights after the two-year jump. Luffy's entry gave his age as 19 and his height as 174 cm.
Luffy's height has never been revised since, and the anime by Toei Animation follows the manga's proportions rather than issuing its own numbers. The official portal at one-piece.com, which tracks the manga past chapter 1190 and the anime past episode 1180, publishes news and merchandise rather than height charts, so the SBS and databook figures remain the reference.
From 172 cm to 174 cm: Luffy's height before and after the timeskip
Before the timeskip, Luffy was a 17-year-old listed at 172 cm (5′8″). Oda gave that figure in SBS Volume 10, page 46, in one of the earliest crew-height answers of the series. When the story picked up again two years later, Luffy had gained 2 cm, which is a modest but believable amount of late-teen growth. The One Piece Wiki's appearance notes say he grew a little taller and became clearly more muscular after his training on Rusukaina, with a thicker neck and the large X-shaped scar across his chest from Admiral Akainu.
That small change set the pattern for the whole crew. Almost every Straw Hat got a little taller across the timeskip, and Oda tied the new numbers to the characters' new ages.
| Straw Hat | Pre-timeskip | Post-timeskip | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey D. Luffy | 172 cm (5′8″), age 17 | 174 cm (5′9″), age 19 | +2 cm | SBS 10; SBS 69 |
| Roronoa Zoro | 178 cm (5′10″), age 19 | 181 cm (5′11″), age 21 | +3 cm | SBS 10; SBS 69 |
| Nami | 169 cm (5′7″), age 18 | 170 cm (5′7″), age 20 | +1 cm | SBS 10; SBS 69 |

| Sanji | 177 cm (5′10″), age 19 | 180 cm (5′11″), age 21 | +3 cm | SBS 10; SBS 69 |
| Tony Tony Chopper | 90 cm (hybrid form) | 90 cm (hybrid form) | 0 | SBS 69 |
| Nico Robin | 188 cm (6′2″) | 188 cm (6′2″) | 0 | SBS 37; SBS 69 |
| Franky | 225 cm (7′5″) | 240 cm (7′10″) | +15 cm | databook; SBS 69 |
| Brook | 266 cm (8′9″) | 277 cm (9′1″) | +11 cm | databook; SBS 69 |
The table shows something fans often overlook. Usopp, who is the same age as Luffy, was already 2 cm taller before the timeskip (174 cm against 172 cm), and the gap stayed at exactly 2 cm afterward because both grew by the same amount. Luffy has always been the shortest of the crew's human men, and the timeskip did nothing to change the order: Zoro and Sanji, the two oldest of the original five, gained the most. Franky's 15 cm jump is the outlier, and it reflects his cyborg rebuild on Karakuri Island rather than ordinary growth.
Luffy's height next to the Straw Hats and his rivals
Because Luffy is the captain of a crew that includes a 277 cm skeleton and a 240 cm cyborg, he often looks small in group shots. The crew's numbers explain the visual effect: Luffy is 6 cm shorter than Sanji, 7 cm shorter than Roronoa Zoro, and more than a full meter shorter than Brook. Only Nami, at 170 cm, and Chopper sit below him.
The contrast grows when you move beyond the crew. One Piece is a series where powerful adults are often enormous, and Luffy's rivals and allies tower over him.
| Character | Height (site data) | Difference from Luffy | Where it's stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portgas D. Ace | 185 cm (6′1″) | +11 cm | SBS Vol. 48 |
| Trafalgar Law | 191 cm (6′3″) | +17 cm | SBS Vol. 68 |
| Boa Hancock | 191 cm (6′3″) | +17 cm | SBS Vol. 58 |
| Shanks | 199 cm (6′6″) | +25 cm | Vivre Card databook |
| Dracule Mihawk | 198 cm (6′6″) | +24 cm | SBS Vol. 58 |

| Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) | 880 cm (28′10″) | +706 cm | SBS Vol. 88 |
Two of those gaps carry real story weight. Shanks, the man who gave Luffy his straw hat, is 25 cm taller, which matches the way the series frames him as a figure Luffy still looks up to. Portgas D. Ace, Luffy's sworn brother, is 11 cm taller. Their height gap fits the older-brother role Ace plays in the Dawn Island flashbacks. Kaido and Big Mom, the two Emperors Luffy confronted in Wano and Whole Cake Island, are each more than four times his height.
How height and size work in Luffy's story
Luffy's fixed height matters less in battle than in most series, because his body is made of rubber. The Gomu Gomu no Mi lets him stretch, inflate and reshape himself, and many of his signature forms are really ways of temporarily changing his size.
- Gear Third pumps air into his bones so that a single fist or leg swells to giant proportions. The rest of his body stays the same, and early uses left him shrunken for a while afterward, a running gag in the Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark arcs.
- Gear Fourth coats his inflated muscles in Armament Haki. In the Boundman form his torso becomes more spherical, his arms grow to match, and he bounces rather than stands. The Tankman variant swells his body even further.
- Gear Fifth, introduced in Wano after the Five Elders reclassified his fruit as a Mythical Zoan, treats size as a cartoon property. Luffy can grow huge or squash himself flat at will.
None of these changes appear in the databooks. Oda's profiles always list Luffy's resting height, the 174 cm he returns to when the fight ends. That makes him an unusual case on a height-comparison site: the character who can most easily become the tallest person on a battlefield has an official height a little above the Japanese average.
The design choice is deliberate. In SBS Volume 65 Oda explained that he deliberately picked an absurd rubber power so he could keep playing with Luffy no matter how serious the plot became. A medium-height lead who can turn into a giant on demand fits that comic logic better than a naturally huge hero. It also keeps Luffy visually readable next to towering villains, because the story's size gaps show off the power gap he has to close.
Luffy's height compared with real people
At 174 cm, Luffy is very close to typical adult male height in the countries most connected to him. The site uses NCD-RisC estimates for the 1996 birth cohort, which describe adults born that year and measured as grown-ups.
- Japan: the average man born in 1996 is 170.8 cm, so Luffy is about 3 cm taller than the typical Japanese man. See average height in Japan for the full cohort trend.
- Brazil: in SBS Volume 56 Oda said that if One Piece took place in the real world, Luffy would be Brazilian. The average Brazilian man in the same dataset is 173.6 cm, almost exactly Luffy's height.
- United States: the American male average is 177.1 cm, so an adult Luffy would stand about 3 cm below the typical US man.
The NCD-RisC team, publishing in eLife in 2016, covered adults born between 1896 and 1996 across 200 countries. They found that Japanese height gains stalled for people born after the early 1960s, while South Korean and Chinese adults went on to overtake them. In that context, Luffy is neither a tall hero nor a short one. He is drawn at an everyday height, which fits Oda's description of him as a simple, straightforward character with few thought bubbles.

Common mix-ups about Luffy's height
Several figures float around online, and most come from mixing up eras or forms.
- "Luffy is 5′8″." That was correct before the timeskip, when Oda listed him at 172 cm. It is out of date for anything set after chapter 598.
- "Luffy is 91 cm." The One Piece Wiki's profile lists 91 cm for Luffy as a small child at his first appearance in the Dawn Island flashback. Whatever its origin, it describes a seven-year-old, not the adult character, and it doesn't come from the SBS crew-height answers.
- "Luffy's height changes in Gear Fifth." His appearance can change size in a fight, but his listed height does not.
- Live-action confusion. Netflix's live-action series casts real actors whose own heights differ from Oda's numbers. Those are facts about the performers, not changes to the character's canon height, and they don't appear in Shueisha's databooks.
The difference between Luffy at 172 cm and at 174 cm is small enough to be invisible in most panels, so artists for licensed merchandise and video games sometimes use either figure. When you see two numbers quoted, check which era of the story the source describes.
Why the SBS numbers carry so much weight
One Piece fans treat SBS answers as canon for a practical reason: they are written by Oda in his own voice and printed in every collected volume, so they reach the same readers as the story itself. Heights in particular have been released this way since the early volumes. The SBS 69 answer is unusual because it was framed for a ten-year-old reader who had just started the series, and Oda used it to restate each crew member's join order, birthday, age and height in one place. That makes it a convenient single reference, and it is the citation the site uses for Luffy's 174 cm.
Databooks such as Blue Deep and the later Vivre Card collection fill in the characters SBS never covers. When the two disagree, fans generally prefer the newer source, but for Luffy there is no disagreement to resolve: Blue Deep and SBS 69 give the same post-timeskip figure.
Luffy's future height
One Piece has not given Luffy a third official height, but Oda has teased what an older Luffy might look like. In SBS Volume 89 he drew Luffy at ages 40 and 60 in two different possible timelines, as an answer to a reader request. He gave no measurements, and the drawings were framed as a playful aside, not a preview of the ending.
Biologically, a 19-year-old man has usually finished growing, so a future databook would most likely keep Luffy at 174 cm if the story jumps forward again. Zoro and Sanji gained 3 cm each across the timeskip when they were already 19, though, so Oda has shown he is willing to add a few centimeters to characters in their late teens. The safest reading is the one the databooks give today: 174 cm for the current story, 172 cm for the East Blue through Marineford arcs.
Frequently asked questions
How tall was Luffy before the timeskip?
Eiichiro Oda gave Luffy's pre-timeskip height as 172 cm (5'8") in SBS Volume 10, when Luffy was 17. After the two-year timeskip, SBS Volume 69 and the Blue Deep databook list him at 174 cm, a gain of 2 cm.
Is Luffy the shortest Straw Hat?
No. Chopper, at 90 cm in his hybrid form, is far shorter, and Nami is listed at 170 cm after the timeskip. Among the human men of the crew, though, Luffy is the shortest at 174 cm, below Usopp (176 cm), Sanji (180 cm) and Zoro (181 cm).
Does Luffy get taller with Gear Third or Gear Fourth?
His official height doesn't change. Gear Third inflates individual limbs to giant size, and Gear Fourth forms such as Boundman swell his torso and arms. These are temporary uses of his rubber body, not growth, so databooks keep listing him at 174 cm.
Who is taller, Luffy or Shanks?
Shanks is much taller. The Vivre Card databook lists him at 199 cm, so he stands about 25 cm (roughly 10 inches) above Luffy's 174 cm.
Has Oda shown Luffy as an older adult?
Yes. In SBS Volume 89 Oda drew Luffy at ages 40 and 60 in two alternative timelines, as an answer to a reader request. No height was given for those drawings.
How does Luffy compare with Zoro in height?
Zoro is 181 cm after the timeskip, so he is 7 cm (about 3 inches) taller than Luffy. Before the timeskip the gap was 6 cm, with Zoro at 178 cm and Luffy at 172 cm.
How tall is Monkey D. Luffy in feet?
Monkey D. Luffy is 5′9″ tall – that is 174 cm or 68.5 inches.
