Real people the same height as Kyojuro Rengoku
Kyojuro Rengoku's height: 177 cm
Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is listed at 177 cm (5′10″) and 72 kg (159 lb). The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki gives those figures in his profile, along with an age of 20 and a birthday of May 10. The site uses the 177 cm figure and records the wiki infobox as its source. Fans trace the height and weight data for the Hashira to the character profiles in Shueisha's official fanbooks, though the wiki doesn't attach a page reference to his height line.
The wiki's own conversion is 5′9¾″, which is the more precise form. 177 cm is 69.69 inches, and rounding to the nearest whole inch gives 5′10″, the figure the site displays. Both describe the same height.
Rengoku is one of the most recognizable characters in modern anime thanks to the Mugen Train film, released in 2020 and later recut as a TV arc, both listed on the official anime portal at kimetsu.com. His role in the story is short, but his height and physical presence matter to how that story plays out, especially in his final fight.
Where Rengoku ranks among the Hashira
The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki ranks the nine Hashira by height. Rengoku sits fourth, at the top of a tight cluster of three average-height swordsmen.
| Rank | Hashira | Height | Difference from Rengoku |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gyomei Himejima (Stone) | 220 cm | +43 cm |
| 2 | Tengen Uzui (Sound) | 198 cm | +21 cm |
| 3 | Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind) | 179 cm | +2 cm |
| 4 | Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame) | 177 cm | — |
| 5 | Giyu Tomioka (Water) | 176 cm | −1 cm |
| 6 | Mitsuri Kanroji (Love) | 167 cm | −10 cm |
| 7 | Obanai Iguro (Serpent) | 162 cm | −15 cm |
| 8 | Muichiro Tokito (Mist) | 160 cm | −17 cm |
| 9 | Shinobu Kocho (Insect) | 151 cm | −26 cm |
Sanemi, Rengoku and Giyu Tomioka are within 3 cm of each other. That middle group is drawn at a height that would look ordinary in modern Japan, between the two giants at the top of the ranking and the smaller swordsmen at the bottom. Rengoku is 21 cm shorter than Tengen Uzui, who in the second fanbook praises him as a great guy who stands out even more than Tengen himself.
The wiki describes Rengoku as a young man of tall stature with a lean, muscular build. His wild golden hair with red tips adds visual height on the page, and his flame-patterned haori, which he received when he became a Hashira, makes him read as larger than his 177 cm in many panels.
Rengoku on the Mugen Train: height next to Tanjiro and his friends
In the Mugen Train arc, Rengoku leads Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke and Nezuko on a mission to stop the Lower Rank One demon Enmu. He is the tallest member of the group by a clear margin.
| Character | Height (site data) | Difference from Rengoku |
|---|---|---|
| Nezuko Kamado | 153 cm | −24 cm |
| Inosuke Hashibira | 164 cm | −13 cm |
| Zenitsu Agatsuma | 164.5 cm | −12.5 cm |
| Tanjiro Kamado | 165 cm | −12 cm |
| Enmu | 168 cm | −9 cm |
| Akaza | 173 cm | −4 cm |
| Muzan Kibutsuji | 179 cm | +2 cm |
Rengoku is 12 cm taller than Tanjiro Kamado, about the difference between a grown man and a teenager who hasn't quite finished growing. That gap supports the arc's emotional structure: Rengoku is the older mentor who promises to protect the younger slayers, and in the final scenes he is literally the figure standing between them and the enemy.
Enmu, the demon who traps the passengers in dreams, is 168 cm in the site's data, 9 cm shorter than Rengoku. Enmu never tries to fight him physically, which suits a demon whose power works through sleep rather than strength.
Rengoku versus Akaza: a fight between near-equals in size
The most important height comparison for Rengoku is with Akaza, the Upper Rank Three demon who arrives at dawn after the train derails. Akaza is listed at 173 cm, 4 cm shorter than Rengoku.
That near-equality matters. Akaza is a martial artist who fights barehanded, and he respects strength above everything. He sees Rengoku as a worthy opponent and repeatedly urges him to become a demon so they can keep fighting forever. Rengoku refuses. The battle is not a story about a giant crushing a smaller man. It is a duel between two fighters of similar build, where the deciding factors are regeneration, endurance and the demon's immortality.
Rengoku's refusal speech, which the wiki records from chapter 63, argues that aging and dying are what give human life meaning. In that framing, his body is not his strength; his resolve is. He is killed in the fight, and his last words to Tanjiro, urging him to set his heart ablaze, become the motto Tanjiro carries for the rest of the series. Later, in the Infinity Castle, Tanjiro and Giyu confront Akaza again, partly to avenge Rengoku.
Rengoku's comments on size in the fanbook
Rengoku is the Hashira who talks most openly about other people's bodies, always admiringly. In the second official fanbook, each Hashira comments on the others, and the wiki summarizes Rengoku's entries:
- On Gyomei Himejima (220 cm): he wishes he had Gyomei's bulk and marvels that he can swing his unwieldy weapon so easily.
- On Shinobu Kocho (151 cm): he admires that she brews poisons and fights without hesitation despite her "disadvantageous size".
- On Obanai Iguro (162 cm): he notes that Obanai's shoulders, elbows and wrists are even more flexible than Mitsuri's.
- On Tengen Uzui (198 cm): he calls Tengen's swordsmanship beautiful and notes that Tengen was the first shinobi he had ever seen.
Those comments fit his personality. The wiki describes him as fast in everything, reaching conclusions quickly and eating quickly, yet sensitive to others' feelings, which is why most of the Corps liked him. At 177 cm he is in the middle of the Hashira range, and he looks both up and down at his colleagues with the same enthusiasm.
Young Rengoku: before he was the Flame Hashira
The manga and its extras show Rengoku at several earlier stages, though only his adult height has been published. The wiki's gallery includes him as a child and as a kinoe-ranked swordsman, the highest rank below Hashira. In those earlier days he wore the standard uniform with a plain white haori; the flame-patterned haori that defines his look came only when he became a Hashira.
A bonus story recorded on the wiki describes his first mission, in which he ruptured his own eardrums to resist the sound-based Blood Demon Art of a flute-playing demon. The Rengoku Volume 0 booklet, given to cinema audiences of the Mugen Train film, adds two of his favorite mottos, both about giving everything and holding firm even in death.
These glimpses matter for height questions because fans sometimes ask how tall Rengoku was as a teenager. Gotoge never gave a figure. The 177 cm in his profile describes the 20-year-old Hashira of the Mugen Train arc, and any younger height you see online is an estimate.
How the anime frames his size
Camera framing changes how tall Rengoku appears from scene to scene. In the dawn battle with Akaza, dramatic angles and his flaring hair and haori can make him look larger than his numbers suggest. In the train-car scenes, by contrast, he sits calmly eating boxed lunches while loudly praising the food between bites, and he reads as an ordinary-sized young man beside the boys. Both effects come from framing. His listed height doesn't change between the manga, the film and the TV version of the arc.
The Rengoku family
Rengoku comes from a long line of Flame Hashira. His father, Shinjuro, held the title before him but fell into despair and drinking after his wife Ruka's death. Kyojuro's younger brother, Senjuro, looks almost identical to him but could not change the color of his Nichirin sword and therefore could not follow the family path.
Wikipedia's character list notes that Shinjuro once rescued Obanai Iguro from the bandit clan that had raised him as an offering to a demon, which is how Obanai came to join the Corps. The fanbook adds that Kyojuro was born in the Ebara district of Tokyo, that he loved watching Noh, kabuki and sumo, and that his favorite food was miso soup with sweet potatoes. His father hated animals, so he was never allowed a pet.
The wiki also records the Rengoku family's curious tradition called kankagari. During pregnancy, the wives of the family spend two hours every seven days gazing at a large torch, which the family credits for the men's flame-colored hair. In his side story, Kyojuro jokes instead that a distant ancestor ate too much tempura. No height figures exist for Shinjuro or Senjuro.
His student Mitsuri Kanroji, 10 cm shorter at 167 cm, trained under him before becoming the Love Hashira. A Taisho Secret segment in the anime confirmed she had been his tsuguko, or designated successor. The wiki notes that Rengoku had no other successors because his training was so demanding that recruits ran away.
What 177 cm means in the real world
To put Rengoku's height in context, the site uses NCD-RisC estimates of adult height by birth cohort, from the collaboration's 2016 study of 200 countries.
| Japanese men, birth cohort | Average adult height | Rengoku's difference |
|---|---|---|
| 1896 | 156.2 cm | +20.8 cm |
| 1926 | 161.9 cm | +15.1 cm |
| 1956 | 169.3 cm | +7.7 cm |
| 1996 | 170.8 cm | +6.2 cm |
Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho era, and a 20-year-old Rengoku would have been born around the turn of the century. Japanese men born in 1896 averaged about 156 cm as adults, so Rengoku would have been roughly 21 cm taller than the typical man of his day. Today he would still be about 6 cm above the average height in Japan for men born in 1996. In the United States, where the comparable average is 177.1 cm, he would be almost exactly average.
You can line him up against any real person with the height difference calculator.
Rengoku's legacy and popularity
Rengoku ranked seventh in both of the series' official popularity polls, with 1,021 votes in the first and 8,000 in the second, according to the wiki, citing Weekly Shōnen Jump's official account. He is voiced by Satoshi Hino in Japanese and Mark Whitten in English, with Mariya Ise and Ryan Bartley voicing him as a child. On stage he has been played by Hiroshi Yazaki.
His height never changes across these adaptations. The anime draws him at the same scale as the manga, and no separate anime height has been released. For any scene from his first appearance at the Hashira meeting to his final stand against Akaza, 177 cm is the figure to use.
