Where Avatar heights come from
James Cameron's Avatar franchise began with the 2009 film, which Wikipedia describes as the highest-grossing motion picture without inflation adjustments. The Way of Water followed on December 16, 2022, and Fire and Ash on December 19, 2025. The films are set in the mid-22nd century on Pandora, a habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri system. They follow the conflict between the indigenous Na'vi, led by Jake Sully and Neytiri, and the humans of the Resources Development Administration.
Unlike anime franchises, which usually publish heights in a databook, Avatar's height data is spread across companion books and exhibition material. The most detailed source for named characters is Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary by Joshua Izzo, published by DK on December 16, 2022. The Avatar Wiki cites it, with page numbers, for most of the heights on this site. Species-level figures come from earlier books, including James Cameron's Avatar: An Activist Survival Guide and The World of Avatar: A Visual Exploration, plus a display at an Avatar exhibition.
| Character | Height | Source cited by the Avatar Wiki |

| Neytiri | 262 cm (8′7″) | Visual Dictionary, p. 15 |
| Mo'at | 262 cm (8′7″) | Visual Dictionary, p. 14 |
| Ronal | 262 cm (8′7″) | Visual Dictionary, p. 98 |
| Neteyam | 249 cm (8′2″) | Visual Dictionary, pp. 16–17 |
| Kiri (2169) | 232 cm (7′7″) | Visual Dictionary, pp. 18–19 |
| Lo'ak (2169) | 232 cm (7′7″) | Visual Dictionary, pp. 20–21 |
| Tsireya | 218 cm (7′2″) | Visual Dictionary, pp. 100–101 |
This site's franchise list includes the Na'vi species figure, Jake, Neytiri, Mo'at, Ronal, Neteyam and Tsireya. Tonowari, Kiri and Lo'ak appear in the table for context.
How tall the Na'vi are as a species
The Avatar Wiki's Na'vi article says plainly that size varies by region and genetic history. It gives three useful figures:
- Average adult male: 292 cm (9′7″), citing a photograph of an exhibition display. This is the figure the site uses for its "Na'vi (average adult male)" entry, shown as 292.1 cm after conversion from feet and inches.
- Regional averages near Hell's Gate, in the region the wiki calls Australis: males about 3 m and 210 kg, females about 2.8 m and 190 kg, citing the Activist Survival Guide.
- Maximum observed height: 3.9 m (about 12′10″), citing the same guide and The World of Avatar.
Wikipedia's article on the Na'vi rounds all of this to "approximately ten feet tall", which is the figure most often repeated in film coverage. The two descriptions are compatible: 292 cm is 9′7″, and the regional male average of 3 m is just under 9′10″.
The wiki also notes sexual dimorphism beyond height, with males showing more prominent pectoral musculature. Female Na'vi are described as slightly smaller on average, which matches the Visual Dictionary placing Neytiri, Mo'at and Ronal at 262 cm, about 30 cm below the male species average.
Proportions, not just height
Height is only part of what makes the Na'vi look so large on screen. The Avatar Wiki's anatomy section, drawing on the Activist Survival Guide, describes a body built differently from a human's at almost every point. Na'vi necks are longer, their bodies slender with a narrow, elongated waist and wide shoulders forming a V-shaped upper back, and their limbs proportionally slightly longer. The skull is small relative to the body, with high cheekbones and a protruding snout. Their teeth resemble ours, though the canines are more pronounced. They have four digits on each hand and foot, including an opposable thumb and thumb toe, pointed ears that move independently and a long prehensile tail used for gripping and balance.
Those proportions matter for comparisons. A small head on a long body makes a Na'vi look even taller than its number suggests when placed beside a human, whose head takes up a larger share of total height. It also means a Na'vi at 292 cm has a much longer reach than a human scaled up to the same height would.
Avatar bodies: humans in Na'vi form
The franchise's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi bodies that humans operate remotely through a brain–computer interface. The Avatar Wiki's page on avatars as a species gives their height as 2.5 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft), the same range as natural Na'vi.
Jake Sully shows the gap between a human and his avatar. The Visual Dictionary lists his avatar body at 8′11″ (272 cm). His human body has no in-universe height in the books; the Avatar Wiki lists only the actor's height of 5′9″ (about 175 cm), which is almost exactly the average US man's height of 175.1 cm in the CDC's 2021–2023 NHANES survey. On those figures, linking to his avatar adds about 97 cm, more than half his human height again. The Jake Sully page shows both bodies side by side.
The same contrast applies to the films' human antagonist. The Avatar Wiki gives Colonel Miles Quaritch's human height as 5′10½″ (179 cm), again using the actor's height from IMDb rather than an in-universe source. A human of that height would reach only about 60% of the way up an average adult male Na'vi.
The Sully family and the Metkayina
The Way of Water introduced a new generation and a new clan, and the Visual Dictionary gave most of them heights.
The Sully children
Neteyam, Jake and Neytiri's first-born son, is listed at 8′2″ (249 cm). Kiri and Lo'ak are both given as 7′7″ (232 cm) for the year 2169, the period covered by the second film. Even the younger children out-measure the tallest athletes: Yao Ming, listed on this site at 229 cm, would be a few centimeters shorter than Kiri and Lo'ak and about 20 cm shorter than Neteyam.
The wiki's timeline puts these heights in context. It gives Neytiri's birth year as 2136, making her 18 in 2154, and Neteyam's as 2155, so he is around 14 in 2169. Jake's human body was born on August 24, 2126, according to the same timeline. Within the family, the numbers suggest the children have not finished growing. Neteyam is 23 cm short of his mother's 262 cm and Kiri and Lo'ak are 30 cm short. The wiki's year label on Kiri and Lo'ak's heights is a reminder that these are snapshots of adolescents, not adult figures.
The Metkayina reef clan
The reef-dwelling Metkayina are led by Tonowari and Ronal. The Avatar Wiki lists Tonowari at 9′7″ (292 cm) and describes him as a tall Na'vi nearing almost 10 feet. Ronal is given as 8′7″ (262 cm) from the Visual Dictionary, the same height as Neytiri and Mo'at. Their daughter Tsireya is listed at 7′2″ (218 cm), the shortest Na'vi character on this site.
The Metkayina match the forest-dwelling Omatikaya almost exactly in these figures. The adult women of both clans are listed at 262 cm, and Tonowari matches the species average for adult males.
The cast at human scale
One way to understand the relative heights inside the films is to shrink the whole cast by the same factor. If the average adult male Na'vi (292.1 cm) is scaled down to the average US man (175.1 cm), every Na'vi height shrinks by about 40%, and the relationships between characters become easier to picture:
| Character | Listed height | Scaled to human proportions |
|---|---|---|
| Tonowari | 292 cm | 175 cm |
| Jake Sully (avatar) | 272 cm | 163 cm |
| Neytiri, Mo'at, Ronal | 262 cm | 157 cm |
| Neteyam | 249 cm | 149 cm |
| Kiri, Lo'ak (2169) | 232 cm | 139 cm |
| Tsireya | 218 cm | 131 cm |
On that scale, Jake's avatar body is a slightly short man among the Na'vi, about 12 cm below the species average for adult males, and the adult women come out a few centimeters below the average US woman (161.2 cm). The children scale to between 131 and 149 cm, well short of their parents. This scaling is only an illustration, not an official figure, but it shows that the Visual Dictionary's numbers form a consistent family: no character is unusually tall or short for their role.
Na'vi heights in the real world
For comparison, the tallest real people on this site are well below most adult Na'vi. Shaquille O'Neal, at 216 cm, would come up to about three-quarters of the height of an adult male Na'vi and would be 2 cm shorter than Tsireya.
Everyday objects make the scale clearer still. According to Bob Vila's guide to door sizes, a standard US interior passage door is 80 in (203.2 cm, or 6′8″) tall, so every Na'vi on this list would need to duck through one. Neytiri, at 262 cm, would clear the top of the frame by almost 60 cm. An average adult male Na'vi, at 292 cm, would stand nearly 90 cm above it.
| Comparison | Height | Difference from a 292 cm Na'vi male |
|---|---|---|
| Average US man (CDC) | 175.1 cm | 117 cm shorter |
| Average US woman (CDC) | 161.2 cm | 131 cm shorter |
| Yao Ming | 229 cm | 63 cm shorter |
| Standard US door | 203.2 cm | 89 cm shorter |
Why the numbers vary between sources
Fans will see different Na'vi heights quoted online, and most of the variation comes from which figure is being quoted. "About ten feet" is a rounded species description. The 292 cm average male comes from an exhibition display, while the 3 m regional average and the 3.9 m maximum come from the Activist Survival Guide. The character heights from the Visual Dictionary are specific to individuals and, in the case of the children, to a particular year. None of these sources contradicts the others; they answer different questions.
Some characters have no reliable figure at all. Human characters such as Jake and Quaritch are given only their actors' heights. The Na'vi-bodied Quaritch of The Way of Water, which the wiki covers on a separate "Recombinant" page, is not included on this site because the sources consulted here give no height for that body, and the character Spider has no height in his wiki infobox either. Rather than estimate from screenshots, the site leaves these characters out of its rankings until an official figure appears.
This site uses the most specific figure available for each entry: the exhibition's average for the species, and the Visual Dictionary for named characters. To compare any of them with real people or other fictional characters, load them into the 3D height comparison tool, or use the height difference calculator to measure the gap between Jake's human and avatar forms. The Na'vi species page explains the average figure in more depth, and the characters hub lists every franchise on the site.
Frequently asked questions
How tall are the Na'vi?
Adult Na'vi are roughly 2.5 to 3.9 m tall. The Avatar Wiki gives the average adult male as 292 cm (9′7″), citing an exhibition display, and says Na'vi around Hell's Gate average 3 m for males and 2.8 m for females. Wikipedia's Na'vi article rounds this to about ten feet.
How tall is Jake Sully's avatar body?
Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary (DK, 2022) gives Jake's avatar body as 8′11″ (272 cm). His human body is not given an official in-universe height; the Avatar Wiki lists only the actor's height of 5′9″.
Is Neytiri taller than Jake?
No. The Visual Dictionary lists Neytiri at 8′7″ (262 cm), about 10 cm shorter than Jake's avatar body at 8′11″ (272 cm). She shares that 262 cm height with her mother Mo'at and with Ronal of the Metkayina clan.
Who is the tallest Na'vi character?
Among named characters with published heights, Tonowari, chief of the Metkayina reef clan, is listed by the Avatar Wiki at 9′7″ (292 cm), the same as the average male figure given for the Na'vi as a species.
How tall are the Sully children?
The Visual Dictionary gives Neteyam, the eldest son, as 8′2″ (249 cm), and Kiri and Lo'ak as 7′7″ (232 cm) each in the year 2169. All three are taller than every person on the site's tallest-people lists, which top out at 231 cm with NBA players Manute Bol and Gheorghe Mureșan.
How do Na'vi compare with a doorway?
A standard US interior door is 203.2 cm (6′8″) tall. Even the youngest Na'vi on this list, Tsireya at 218 cm, would have to duck, and an average adult male at 292 cm would stand nearly 90 cm above the top of the frame.
Who is the tallest Avatar character?
Jake Sully (avatar body) is the tallest Avatar character in our list at 271.8 cm (8′11″). Na'vi (average adult male) is a species average, not an individual character, so it is not counted.
Who is the shortest Avatar character?
Tsireya is the shortest at 218.4 cm (7′2″).
What is the average height of Avatar characters?
The average of the 6 human-sized characters listed here is 254 cm (8′4″). For comparison, the average US man is 175.1 cm and the average US woman 161.2 cm (CDC).
