The fanbooks behind Demon Slayer's heights

Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020 and filled 23 volumes. Ufotable's anime made it a global phenomenon. Wikipedia reports that the 2020 film Mugen Train became the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film of all time, and a film trilogy adapting the Infinity Castle arc began in Japan on July 18, 2025.

The official heights come from two fanbooks published by Shueisha:

  • Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook: Kisatsutai Kenbunroku, released July 4, 2019, at 216 pages.
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook 2, released February 4, 2021, in Japan and in English as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—Corps Records in September 2023 in Australia, the US and Canada, followed by the UK in October 2023. Both fanbooks are credited to Gotouge himself, which gives their character statistics the same authority as the manga.

The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki cites the second fanbook directly for most of the demons on this list, including Muzan, Kokushibo, Doma, Akaza, Enmu, Kaigaku, Hantengu and Rui. The Demon Slayer Corps characters' infoboxes list heights without a citation beside the number, though their pages cite both fanbooks elsewhere. The site uses the wiki's figures throughout and labels the sourcing on each character page.

The Hashira: from 151 cm to 220 cm

The nine Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps have the widest height range of any group in the series:

Hashira Height Age (per the wiki)
Gyomei Himejima 220 cm (7′2½″) 27
Tengen Uzui 198 cm (6′6″) 23
Sanemi Shinazugawa 179 cm (5′10½″) —
Kyojuro Rengoku 177 cm (5′9¾″) —
Giyu Tomioka 176 cm (5′9¼″) —
Mitsuri Kanroji 167 cm (5′6″) —
Obanai Iguro 162 cm (5′3¾″) —
Muichiro Tokito 160 cm (5′3″) 14
Shinobu Kocho 151 cm (4′11½″) 18

Gyomei Himejima is in a category of his own. At 220 cm he is the tallest character in the franchise's data, and the wiki describes him as easily towering over the other Hashira. He is 22 cm taller than Tengen Uzui, the only other Hashira near 2 m, and 69 cm taller than Shinobu Kocho, the shortest of the nine. The Tengen Uzui and Shinobu Kocho pages show the extremes of the group.

The middle of the group is tight. Sanemi, Rengoku and Giyu fall within 3 cm of one another at 176 to 179 cm, and Mitsuri, Obanai and Muichiro sit between 160 and 167 cm. Muichiro, at 14, is the youngest Hashira with a stated age, and at 160 cm he is still taller than Shinobu, who is 18.

Weight and build among the Hashira

The wiki also records weights for every Hashira, and they spread even more widely than the heights. Gyomei is listed at 130 kg, Tengen at 95 kg, Sanemi at 75 kg, Rengoku at 72 kg and Giyu at 69 kg. Mitsuri and Muichiro are both 56 kg, Obanai 53 kg, and Shinobu only 37 kg. Gyomei therefore weighs about three and a half times as much as Shinobu while standing 69 cm taller.

Some pairings are surprising. Mitsuri, at 167 cm, is listed at the same 56 kg as Muichiro, who is 7 cm shorter, and Obanai is 3 kg lighter than both despite standing between them in height. Among the demons, Kokushibo's 93 kg, from Fanbook 2, is close to Tengen's 95 kg, while Muzan and Akaza sit at 75 kg and 74 kg. The wiki's note that Sanemi and Muzan share the same height and weight is visible here too: both are 179 cm and 75 kg.

How the Hashira earn the title

The wiki's Hashira article explains that becoming one is meant to be extremely difficult. A swordsman qualifies by killing at least 50 demons while holding the rank of Kinoe, or by defeating one of the Twelve Kizuki demons. Height plays no part in the requirements, which is why the group ranges from Shinobu's 151 cm to Gyomei's 220 cm. Muichiro is 14 according to the wiki's age listing, and his 160 cm is within the normal range for a boy that age, as the growth-chart comparison below shows.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke: a one-centimeter trio

The three boys at the center of the story are almost exactly the same height. Tanjiro Kamado is listed at 165 cm, Zenitsu Agatsuma at 164.5 cm and Inosuke Hashibira at 164 cm. The half-centimeter in Zenitsu's figure is unusual for a manga height and makes the order precise: Tanjiro is 0.5 cm taller than Zenitsu, who is 0.5 cm taller than Inosuke.

The wiki gives their ages as 15 or 16 during most of the story. Tanjiro is 13 in Chapter 1, 15 by the end of Chapter 5 and 16 by the end of the series, while Zenitsu is listed as 16 and Inosuke as 15. Their heights are given as single figures rather than tracked over time, so the listed 165 cm describes Tanjiro during the main story. His character page compares him with the Hashira and with real people.

Two other young slayers bracket the trio. Genya Shinazugawa is 180 cm, a full 15 cm taller than Tanjiro. Kanao Tsuyuri is 156 cm.

The young cast against growth-chart data

Several of the main characters are teenagers, so it is fairer to compare them with others their age than with adults. Using the CDC's stature-for-age reference data, the basis of US pediatric growth charts:

Character Age (per the wiki) Height CDC median for that age and sex Approximate percentile
Tanjiro Kamado 15 165 cm 170.1 cm 26th
Zenitsu Agatsuma 16 164.5 cm 173.6 cm 12th
Inosuke Hashibira 15 164 cm 170.1 cm 22nd
Muichiro Tokito 14 160 cm 164.1 cm 31st
Nezuko Kamado 14 (chronological) 153 cm 160.5 cm 13th
Shinobu Kocho 18 151 cm 163.1 cm 3rd

By modern American standards, the trio and Muichiro are a little below the median for their ages, and Shinobu is short for an 18-year-old. Set against the Taishō-era Japanese averages discussed below, the same heights look tall. The figures are a way of reading the fanbook numbers, not official character data.

Nezuko's height and her size-changing ability

Nezuko Kamado is listed at 153 cm (5′0″), and the wiki gives her age as 12 physically and 14 chronologically. Her listed height is less useful on screen than anyone else's, because one of her demon abilities is altering her own size. The wiki notes she can shrink to the size of a small child to fit inside a small box or basket, and can also enlarge herself into a much bigger form. The Nezuko page uses her full 153 cm form for comparisons.

The demons: Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki

Most demon heights come straight from Fanbook 2, which makes them among the best-sourced figures in the franchise:

Demon Height Note from the wiki
Kokushibo 190 cm (6′3″) Fanbook 2
Doma 187 cm (6′1⅔″) Fanbook 2
Muzan Kibutsuji 179 cm (5′10½″) Fanbook 2; the progenitor of demons
Akaza 173 cm (5′8″) Fanbook 2
Enmu 168 cm (5′6″) Fanbook 2; main antagonist of the Mugen Train arc
Kaigaku 167 cm (5′5¾″) Fanbook 2; antagonist in the Infinity Castle arc
Hantengu 166 cm (5′5⅓″) Fanbook 2
Yushiro 157 cm (5′2″) Demon
Tamayo 150 cm (4′11″) Demon
Rui 135 cm (4′5″) Fanbook 2; main antagonist of the Mount Natagumo arc

Muzan Kibutsuji, the progenitor of all demons, is 179 cm, mid-range for the adult men of the series. The wiki points out that he shares his listed height and weight with the Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa, citing the fanbook. The Muzan page sets the series' main villain beside the Hashira and real people.

The tallest demon is Kokushibo at 190 cm, followed by Doma at 187 cm. Both are taller than every Hashira except Gyomei and Tengen. Akaza is 173 cm, 8 cm taller than Tanjiro and 4 cm shorter than Rengoku, placing him squarely between the trio and the mid-height Hashira. His 74 kg is almost identical to Muzan's 75 kg. Rui, the main antagonist of the Mount Natagumo arc, is the shortest character on the list at 135 cm.

The wiki lists every demon in the table as a former human. Their heights are the forms they keep in the story, not their human heights.

Heights in Taishō-era context

Wikipedia notes that Demon Slayer is set in Taishō-era Japan, in the early 20th century. That historical setting makes a useful comparison, because Japanese people of that time were much shorter than today.

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) estimates average adult height by birth year. For Japanese people born in 1896, roughly the generation of the adults in the story, it estimates averages of 156.2 cm for men and 142.3 cm for women. For those born in 1926, the figures are 161.9 cm and 149.9 cm. The study notes that Japan saw one of the largest height gains of the 20th century before the rise stopped for people born after the early 1960s. Today, NCD-RisC puts Japanese men born in 1996 at 170.8 cm and women at 158.3 cm, the figures on this site's Japan average height page.

Against the 1896 averages:

Character Height Above the 1896 average for their sex
Gyomei Himejima 220 cm +63.8 cm
Tengen Uzui 198 cm +41.8 cm
Tanjiro Kamado 165 cm +8.8 cm
Mitsuri Kanroji 167 cm +24.7 cm
Nezuko Kamado 153 cm +10.7 cm
Shinobu Kocho 151 cm +8.7 cm

On that basis, even Shinobu, the shortest Hashira, would have been taller than the average Japanese woman of her era. Mitsuri, at 167 cm, would have stood about 25 cm above it, a striking height for a woman of the period. Gyomei would have been more than 60 cm taller than the average man around him.

Against modern Japanese averages, the cast looks far more ordinary. Tanjiro's 165 cm is about 6 cm below today's average Japanese man, and Mitsuri's 167 cm is about 9 cm above today's average Japanese woman. The series' heights read as tall when set against the Taishō era and as fairly typical by the standards of the readers who first bought the manga.

How tall were Japanese people in the Taishō era?

Demon Slayer is set in Taishō-era Japan. NCD-RisC estimates that Japanese men born in 1896 averaged 156.2 cm as adults and women 142.3 cm, rising to 161.9 cm and 149.9 cm for those born in 1926. By those standards, almost every adult character in the series would have been tall.

Is Tanjiro taller than Zenitsu and Inosuke?

Only just. The listed heights are Tanjiro 165 cm, Zenitsu 164.5 cm and Inosuke 164 cm, so the three boys are within a single centimeter of each other.

Why do Sanemi and Muzan have the same height?

How tall is Nezuko when she changes size?

Nezuko's listed height is 153 cm (5′0″). As a demon she can alter her body's size. The wiki notes she can shrink to the size of a small child to fit inside a small box or basket, and can also enlarge herself, so on screen she often appears at sizes far from her official height.

Which official books give Demon Slayer heights?

Two Shueisha fanbooks by Koyoharu Gotouge: the first Official Fanbook (July 2019) and Official Fanbook 2 (February 2021 in Japan, published in English as Corps Records in 2023). The wiki cites Fanbook 2 for most of the demons' heights.

Who is the tallest Demon Slayer character?
