Jake Sully's height: 8′11″ in his Na'vi avatar body
Jake Sully is one of the few characters on this site with two very different bodies, so "how tall is Jake Sully?" has two answers. The figure the site uses is for the body most people picture: his blue, ten-foot-class Na'vi avatar, which stands 271.8 cm (8′11″). That number comes from DK's Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary, the official illustrated guide to the 2022 sequel, as cited on the James Cameron's Avatar Wiki (page 12 of the book).
The human Jake is another matter. Neither Avatar (2009) nor its sequels state his human height. Fan references usually give 5′9″ (about 175 cm), and the Avatar Wiki is careful to label that figure as the actor's height, meaning Sam Worthington, not an in-universe measurement. Treat it as an approximation of how the character looks on screen rather than as canon.
| Body | Height | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Na'vi avatar (current body) | 271.8 cm (8′11″) | Avatar: The Way of Water: The Visual Dictionary (DK) |
| Human Jake | about 175 cm (5′9″) | Actor Sam Worthington's commonly listed height; not stated in the films |
| Difference | about 97 cm (3′2″) | Roughly the height of a 3-year-old child |
That gap is the story's central image. Jake is a former Marine paralyzed from the waist down. When he links with his avatar for the first time, he gains working legs and a body roughly a meter taller than his own. In the first film he keeps sprinting even when Norm tells him to stop, plainly enjoying being able to run again.
Why a human-Na'vi hybrid stands under nine feet
Jake's avatar isn't a natural Na'vi. Avatars in the films are hybrid bodies grown from a mixture of human and Na'vi DNA and keyed to a specific operator's genome, which is why Jake could take over a body that had been grown for his identical twin, Tom, a scientist killed before the mission. The genetic match made Jake the only practical replacement.
That hybrid origin may explain why Jake comes in a little under the Na'vi norm. The Avatar Wiki gives average adult Na'vi height as 8 to 10 feet (about 2.7 to 3.0 m), with the average male at 9′7″ (about 292 cm) and females slightly smaller. The largest Na'vi observed is listed at about 3.9 m (12′10″). Against those figures, Jake's 8′11″ avatar is roughly 20 cm shorter than a typical Na'vi man. He's tall by human standards and ordinary among the Omatikaya.
The films don't say the avatar is short, and no canon source blames the human DNA for it. But it's consistent with a body that is part human, and it matches how the films frame Jake: physically a Na'vi, yet always a little bit of an outsider.
Jake Sully versus Neytiri and the Na'vi cast
The site's Avatar data, drawn from the same official guides, lets us place Jake among the characters he lives with:
| Character | Height (cm) | Height (ft/in) | vs Jake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average Na'vi male | 292.1 | 9′7″ | +20.3 cm |
| Jake Sully (avatar) | 271.8 | 8′11″ | — |
| Neytiri | 261.6 | 8′7″ | −10.2 cm |
| Mo'at | 261.6 | 8′7″ | −10.2 cm |
| Ronal | 261.6 | 8′7″ | −10.2 cm |
| Neteyam | 248.9 | 8′2″ | −22.9 cm |
| Tsireya | 218.4 | 7′2″ | −53.4 cm |
So Jake is about 10 cm (4 inches) taller than Neytiri, the Omatikaya hunter who becomes his partner, and he stands the same distance above her mother Mo'at and the Metkayina leader Ronal. His eldest son Neteyam, listed in the sequel's guide, sits about 23 cm below him. Tsireya, the Metkayina chief's daughter, is shorter still as a teenager.
Among the main adult cast, then, Jake reads as a tall member of a tall species. On screen that's mostly a question of framing. When the Na'vi characters share shots with humans, as in the first film's lab scenes or Quaritch's encounters, the scale difference is huge. Among the Na'vi themselves, the differences of a few inches look about the same as they would among humans.
How Jake compares with real people
At 271.8 cm, Jake's avatar matches the tallest human in recorded history. Robert Wadlow, the American man whose height was documented in the 1930s and 1940s, measured 2.72 m (8′11″), according to Wikidata's referenced statement. Jake's avatar and Wadlow are within a couple of millimeters of each other. The difference is that Wadlow's height was the result of a rare medical condition, while Jake's is simply the norm for his species, built on a skeleton that franchise reference material describes as reinforced with a naturally occurring carbon fiber.
Compared with ordinary people the gap is dramatic:
- The average American man born in 1996 is about 177.1 cm tall, according to the NCD-RisC estimates on this site's U.S. average height page. Jake's avatar is about 95 cm taller, so a typical man's head would reach roughly Jake's lower chest.
- The world's tallest living man, Sultan Kösen, is listed on this site at 251 cm, about 21 cm shorter than Jake's avatar.
- The site's tallest Marvel and DC figures who aren't giants, such as Thanos at 200.7 cm, come up only to about Jake's shoulder.
You can put these figures side by side in the 3D height comparison tool, which handles very tall characters, or work out the exact gap with the height difference calculator.
Build, weight and proportions of a Na'vi body
Height is only part of what makes Jake's avatar so different from his human body. The Avatar Wiki's species profile describes Na'vi as slender but muscular, with longer necks than humans, a narrow, elongated waist, wide shoulders that give the upper back a V shape, and limbs that are proportionally slightly longer than ours. The same profile credits them with roughly four times the strength of an average human.
Weight is where the figures get interesting. The wiki lists an average Na'vi weight of about 286 lb in Pandora's gravity, which it converts to about 357 lb (162 kg) in Earth gravity. Even the Earth figure is light for a body nearly three meters tall: a human scaled up to 2.9 m with ordinary proportions would weigh a great deal more, because weight grows with volume (roughly the cube of height) while height grows in a straight line. The Na'vi's lean frame and carbon-reinforced bones are the franchise's answer to that square-cube problem, and they're why Jake can run along branches and leap onto an ikran rather than lumbering.
For a sense of how those proportions read on screen, compare a few body measurements to human norms:
- Hands: natural Na'vi have four fingers, while avatars like Jake's carry human traits such as five fingers and eyebrows, a visible clue to their mixed DNA.
- Limbs: proportionally a little longer than a human's, which adds to the stretched, elongated look of the whole figure.
- Tail: a prehensile tail used for balance. It doesn't add to standing height, but it changes how much space a Na'vi takes up in a crowd.
How fast Na'vi grow, and what that means for Jake's children
The species profile also says Na'vi children mature faster than human children. It gives the example of Tuktirey, Jake and Neytiri's youngest daughter, who is already about 5′7″ (170 cm) at age seven, the height of an average adult woman in many countries. Na'vi are described as reaching cultural adulthood between about 15 and 17 Earth years.
That makes height comparisons within the Sully family unusual. A seven-year-old Na'vi child stands as tall as a grown human, and a teenager such as Neteyam, listed at 248.9 cm, is already more than 70 cm taller than the average American man. Jake, at 271.8 cm, is still the tallest member of his household in the published guides, but by Na'vi standards he's a medium-tall father rather than a giant. Kiri and Lo'ak, his other children, don't have heights in the site's data, so they're left out of the comparison table above.
Height, scale and the way the films were made
The Avatar films were shot with performance capture. Sam Worthington and the rest of the cast acted on a stage in motion-capture suits, and their performances were then mapped onto the much larger Na'vi digital models. Because the actors are normal human size, the production effectively scaled every movement up into a body roughly half again as tall.
That scaling shows up most when the story mixes sizes. Human characters wear exopacks and stand next to Na'vi who tower over them; human-sized rooms and equipment make Jake's avatar look cramped whenever he is indoors at the human base. Those moments remind viewers that Jake is living in two worlds built at two different sizes.
Jake's ages and the permanent transfer
The Avatar Wiki's timeline gives Jake a birth date of August 24, 2126. Because he spent the trip to Pandora in cryosleep, he arrives in 2154 chronologically 28 but physically about 22. At the end of the first film, after his human body nearly dies from exposure to Pandora's atmosphere, the Na'vi transfer his consciousness permanently into the avatar through the Tree of Souls.
From that point on, the 8′11″ body is simply Jake. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) picks up more than a decade later, with Jake as Omatikaya clan leader and father of several children, and the Visual Dictionary measurement used here belongs to that era. In Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), he again takes on the Toruk Makto role to rally the clans. No official source gives a different height for any of these periods, so the site uses the single published figure.
Why the numbers differ online
If you search for Jake Sully's height you'll find figures anywhere from about 8 to 10 feet. There are three common reasons:
- Generic Na'vi figures. Some sites give the species range of 8 to 10 feet, or the average male figure of 9′7″, and apply it to Jake. The character-specific Visual Dictionary figure is 8′11″.
- Human versus avatar. Pages that list 5′9″ are describing the human Jake, or more accurately the actor.
- Unit rounding. 8′11″ converts to 271.8 cm; some sources round to 272 cm or describe him loosely as "nine feet tall".
The site's headline number is the official 271.8 cm, and the Avatar characters hub uses the same guidebook for the rest of the Na'vi cast, so comparisons stay consistent.

Frequently asked questions
How tall is Jake Sully as a human?
The films never give his human height. Fan references use 5 ft 9 in (about 175 cm), which is the height commonly listed for actor Sam Worthington rather than an in-universe figure.
Is Jake Sully's avatar shorter than a normal Na'vi?
Slightly. His avatar body is listed at 8 ft 11 in (about 272 cm), while the average adult Na'vi male is given as 9 ft 7 in (about 292 cm). He is still taller than Neytiri, who is listed at 8 ft 7 in.
How much taller is Jake Sully than Neytiri?
About 10 cm. Jake's avatar is listed at 271.8 cm (8′11″) and Neytiri at 261.6 cm (8′7″), roughly a 4-inch difference.
