Lady Gaga's height: 155 cm, and why she rarely looks it

The site lists Lady Gaga at 155 cm (5′1″). The figure is the "real height" given by The Sun in a November 2021 feature comparing celebrities' barefoot heights with how tall they appear in heels, and it is the reference behind the height statement on her Wikidata record. In that piece, the newspaper put Gaga at the top of its list of stars who use footwear to change their stature, noting that she often wears platforms of around nine inches.

That contrast is the key to understanding Gaga's height. Few performers have done more to make height part of their visual identity. Platform boots, sculptural shoes and stage costumes have made her look anywhere from her true 5′1″ to nearly six feet, depending on the night. When people say she looks "taller than expected" or "tiny in person," they are usually comparing two different pairs of shoes.

Height as part of the art: platforms and the McQueen armadillo shoes

Gaga emerged in 2008 with The Fame, and from the start her stage and red-carpet looks were designed to be dramatic. Her Wikipedia biography records that she became friends with the British designer Alexander McQueen shortly before his death in 2010 and became known for wearing his designs, especially his towering "armadillo" shoes. Those shoes, with a curved, hoof-like silhouette and an extreme platform, added many inches to her height and made her one of the most recognizable figures in pop.

For a performer of 155 cm, footwear like that does several things at once:

  • It changes the silhouette. Very high platforms lengthen the leg line, so even in photos without a reference person, she reads as taller.
  • It levels the field with co-stars and interviewers. On a red carpet next to a 180 cm co-star, nine inches of platform can close most of the gap.
  • It is part of the character. Gaga's early image treated fashion as performance art, and exaggerated height was one of the tools.

The trade-off is that photos of Gaga are a poor guide to her real height unless her feet are visible. A barefoot or flat-shoe photo, such as many of her appearances in her acting roles, shows a much smaller figure than her music videos.

How much height can footwear add?

Footwear Approximate added height Apparent height for a 155 cm person
Barefoot 0 cm 155 cm (5′1″)
Flat shoes or sneakers 2–3 cm about 158 cm (5′2″)
Typical stiletto 8–10 cm about 164 cm (5′4½″)
Platform of about 9 inches (23 cm), as cited by The Sun up to about 23 cm up to about 178 cm (5′10″)

The last row shows why Gaga sometimes appears to tower over people who are actually much taller. With very high platforms, a 155 cm woman can reach the height of an average American man.

From Stefani Germanotta to global stadiums

Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, in New York City. Her early albums, The Fame (2008) and The Fame Monster (2009), made her one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and she has since moved between genres, from the jazz album Cheek to Cheek with Tony Bennett to the soft rock of Joanne and the dance-pop of Chromatica and Mayhem.

Her live shows have grown to enormous scale. On May 3, 2025, she played a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro that Pollstar, citing promoter Live Nation, said drew an estimated 2.5 million people, the largest audience ever for a female artist. Pollstar noted that the previous benchmark on the same beach was set by Madonna, who drew about 1.6 million in 2024. The site lists Madonna at 164 cm, about 9 cm taller than Gaga, so two of the most famous women in pop history, separated by a few inches, set back-to-back crowd records in the same place.

Before that, her biggest single-night audience had come through television. Her Wikipedia biography covers two Super Bowl appearances in consecutive years: she sang the national anthem at Super Bowl 50 in 2016 and headlined the halftime show at Super Bowl LI in 2017. A halftime show is a useful example of how stage height works. The performer is a small figure in a stadium of more than 70,000 seats, and the production relies on elevated platforms, lighting rigs and camera angles to make one person fill the frame. For a 155 cm performer, the staging does far more to set her apparent size than her own height ever could.

At that scale, physical height is almost irrelevant: almost everyone in the crowd watches the giant screens. What matters is the stage design, the costumes and, for Gaga, the footwear that helps her read as a large figure from hundreds of meters away.

Lady Gaga on screen: the height gaps with her co-stars

Gaga's acting career includes American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–2016), A Star Is Born (2018), House of Gucci (2021), Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) and Netflix's Wednesday (2025). Her contributions to the A Star Is Born soundtrack, including "Shallow," made her the first person to win an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy in a single year, according to her Wikipedia biography.

Film is where her real height is most visible, because characters wear everyday shoes. Here is how she compares with some co-stars in the site's data:

Production Co-star Co-star height (site data) Difference
House of Gucci (2021) Adam Driver 189 cm (6′2½″) Driver +34 cm
House of Gucci (2021) Al Pacino 168 cm (5′6″) Pacino +13 cm
Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) Joaquin Phoenix 173 cm (5′8″) Phoenix +18 cm
Wednesday, season 2 (2025) Jenna Ortega 155 cm (5′1″) Equal

House of Gucci and a 34 cm gap

In House of Gucci, Gaga played Patrizia Reggiani opposite Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci. With Driver listed at 189 cm, the on-screen couple had a 34 cm (13-inch) gap, one of the largest between romantic leads in a major recent film. In two-shots, the camera has to accommodate a full head-and-shoulders difference, which is unusual for a romantic lead pairing. Gaga's character often wears heels, which reduces the visible gap somewhat, but the difference remains obvious in wide shots.

Wednesday and a perfect match

In season two of Wednesday, Gaga played Rosaline Rotwood, the ghost of a former Nevermore Academy teacher, and released "The Dead Dance" with a Tim Burton-directed video tied to the series. Jenna Ortega, the show's star, is also listed at 155 cm, so the two stood at exactly the same height in their scenes, which is rare for a guest star and a lead.

You can compare Gaga with any of these actors at true scale with the height difference calculator.

Lady Gaga compared with other pop stars

Gaga belongs to a group of very successful female pop stars who are well below average height. The table uses the site's data.

Singer Height (site data) Difference
Ariana Grande 157.5 cm (5′2″) Grande +2.5 cm
Madonna 164 cm (5′4½″) Madonna +9 cm
Katy Perry 171 cm (5′7″) Perry +16 cm
Taylor Swift 180 cm (5′11″) Swift +25 cm
Bruno Mars 165.1 cm (5′5″) Mars +10 cm
Beyoncé 170.2 cm (5′7″) Beyoncé +15 cm

The spread is wide. Taylor Swift is 25 cm taller than Gaga, while Ariana Grande is almost the same height. On a stage with heels and platforms, those differences mostly vanish, which is one reason fans are often surprised by their real heights.

How Lady Gaga compares with the average American woman

The CDC's measured NHANES data for 2015–2018 gives a clear picture of where 155 cm falls among American women. Unlike surveys that ask people their height, NHANES staff measure participants in person.

NHANES 2015–2018 group Mean 10th percentile 15th percentile 50th percentile
All women aged 20 and over 161.3 cm 152.5 cm 153.9 cm 161.3 cm
Women aged 30–39 162.7 cm 154.1 cm 155.5 cm 162.6 cm

Gaga was in her early thirties during the survey window. At 155 cm, she sits just below the 15th percentile for American women aged 30 to 39, meaning roughly 85 to 87 percent of women her age are taller. Against the overall adult female average of 161.3 cm, she is about 6 cm (2.5 inches) shorter.

NCD-RisC's long-run estimates for the United States tell a similar story. American women born in 1976 averaged 164.0 cm and those born in 1996 averaged 163.5 cm, so women of Gaga's generation averaged close to 164 cm, putting her about 9 cm below that figure. The same data shows that American women gained about 5.5 cm between the 1896 and 1956 birth cohorts and have changed very little since.

In other words, Gaga is short by American standards but far from rare. Roughly one in seven American women her age is her height or shorter. You can check any height against national data with the height percentile calculator.

What 155 cm means around the world

Gaga tours globally, and how her height compares with the people in her audience depends heavily on where she is. NCD-RisC estimates for women born in 1996 show how much average female height varies between countries:

Country (NCD-RisC, women born 1996) Average height Gaga's difference
India 152.6 cm Gaga +2.4 cm
Mexico 156.8 cm Gaga −1.8 cm
Japan 158.3 cm Gaga −3.3 cm
Brazil 160.9 cm Gaga −5.9 cm
United States 163.5 cm Gaga −8.5 cm
Netherlands 168.7 cm Gaga −13.7 cm
Latvia 169.8 cm Gaga −14.8 cm

In India, a woman of 155 cm is slightly taller than average. In Mexico or Japan she is within a few centimeters of typical. In the Netherlands or Latvia, the two countries with the tallest women in the dataset, she would be more than 13 cm below average.

The Brazil row has a particular connection to her career. At the record-setting Copacabana concert in 2025, the average Brazilian woman in the crowd, at about 161 cm, would have been roughly 6 cm taller than Gaga, and the average Brazilian man, at about 174 cm, around 19 cm taller. On stage, in her platforms, she would have looked like neither: the combination of footwear, stage height and screens made her the biggest figure on the beach.

Family and build

Gaga's mother is Cynthia Germanotta, who co-founded the Born This Way Foundation with her. Her father is Joseph Germanotta and her younger sister is Natali Germanotta, a fashion designer. Reputable outlets have not reported the heights of her parents or sister, so this page leaves family comparisons out, and it records no weight for Gaga because none has been officially published.

Why her height is so often misjudged

Lady Gaga is a case study in how little a photo can tell you about someone's height. Her career has been built partly on transformation, and footwear is one of the most effective tools for changing how big a person looks. Over the years she has appeared at 155 cm in flats, about 164 cm in stilettos and close to 178 cm in her most extreme platforms.

The fairest comparison is always barefoot to barefoot. On that basis, Gaga is 155 cm, the same as Jenna Ortega, an inch shorter than Ariana Grande and 25 cm shorter than Taylor Swift. If you are around her height, the comparisons on this page may be a useful reference: you would be eye to eye with Jenna Ortega, just under Ariana Grande, and roughly at the shoulder of Adam Driver.
