Kevin Hart's height: the figures he has given and the one that sticks

Kevin Hart is listed on this site at 158 cm (5′2″), the barefoot figure most commonly reported for the Philadelphia-born comedian, actor and producer. It is the number used by Wikidata and by most outlets that have written about him, and it fits the way Hart has framed himself on stage for more than two decades: as the smallest man in the room who refuses to act like it.

Hart himself has added a twist to that number. In an April 2024 interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS's 60 Minutes, Cooper pointed out that reported figures for Hart ranged anywhere from 5′2″ to 5′5″. Hart's answer, as reported by Entertainment Tonight, was that GQ's 5′5″ was correct, but he immediately qualified it: that figure was with a sneaker on. He then joked that a pair of boots could take him to 5′5½″.

Read carefully, those statements are consistent rather than contradictory. A typical athletic sneaker adds roughly 2.5 to 3 cm at the heel, and a heeled boot can add more. Stack that on a 158 cm frame and you arrive at roughly 161 to 165 cm, which is exactly the range Cooper described. The spread in published heights for Hart is therefore less a dispute than a measurement-conditions problem: some outlets quoted him barefoot, some quoted him in shoes, and some quoted his own jokes.

Condition Approximate height Source of the figure
Barefoot (site value) 158 cm (5′2″) Widely reported; Wikidata
In sneakers about 165 cm (5′5″) Hart on 60 Minutes, 2024
In boots about 166 cm (5′5½″) Hart's joke on 60 Minutes, 2024

That spread of about 8 cm between "barefoot" and "best boots" is useful to remember whenever you see Hart in a photo next to someone else. Red-carpet and press images almost always show him in footwear, so if you want to recreate a comparison on the height comparison tool, use the barefoot figure for both people rather than mixing barefoot and shod numbers.

How a short stature became the engine of a comedy career

Hart's height is not incidental to his career; it is the core of his comic persona. The Associated Press, writing about his selection for the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, described his signature style as a combination of his small stature, an expressive face and very fast delivery. He started out as a teenager at The Laff House in Philadelphia under the stage name "Lil Kev," a name that put his size front and center before he had written much material around it.

The early years were rough by his own account. The AP noted that Hart has described being booed off stage several times and, in one story he tells, having a piece of chicken thrown at him. What changed was not his height but his relationship to it. Instead of treating it as a weakness the audience might exploit, he wrote it into the act: stories about being dwarfed by his family, by his friends, by women he dated, and later by his famous co-stars. In the 60 Minutes interview he explained that the height bits work because people laugh at the experience he describes, not at him as a punchline.

That approach scaled. In August 2015 Hart performed two nights at Lincoln Financial Field, the Philadelphia Eagles' stadium, filming the special Kevin Hart: What Now? A Reuters review published by the Christian Science Monitor put the audience at around 53,000; the film's marketing promoted it as a first for a stand-up comedian in an at-capacity football stadium. The image of a 158 cm comedian alone on a stage in a 69,000-seat NFL stadium was, in its own way, the ultimate height joke.

By the time the Mark Twain Prize was presented on March 24, 2024, the AP reported that eleven of Hart's films had opened at number one at the box office and that his movies had grossed more than $4.23 billion worldwide. The AP described the prize as being in its 25th year when Hart's selection was announced.

Height as a casting asset

In Hollywood, a shorter male lead is often staged to minimize the difference with co-stars, using apple boxes, trenches or careful blocking. Hart's films frequently do the opposite and make the height gap a visual gag. When Dwayne Johnson discussed casting Hart opposite him in Central Intelligence (2016), he told reporters that the studio had offered a list of other actors and that he chose Hart because he "always worked off the visual first," thinking about how the pairing would look on a poster. Johnson did not mention height directly in that quote, but Capital FM's report framed it as Hart's height securing him the part.

Kevin Hart next to his most famous co-stars

The comparisons below use the heights on this site. Because Hart is usually photographed in shoes and so are his co-stars, the barefoot gaps shown here are the fairest like-for-like numbers.

Person Height Difference vs Kevin Hart Connection
Shaquille O'Neal 216 cm (7′1″) +58 cm Frequent on-camera banter partner
Dwayne Johnson 195.6 cm (6′5″) +37.6 cm Central Intelligence, Jumanji films
Mark Wahlberg 172.7 cm (5′8″) +14.7 cm Me Time (2022)
Josh Hutcherson 170 cm (5′7″) +12 cm Fellow shorter leading man
Muggsy Bogues 160 cm (5′3″) +2 cm Shortest player in NBA history
Danny DeVito 147 cm (4′10″) −11 cm Jumanji: The Next Level

The Johnson partnership

The Hart–Johnson pairing is the defining height comparison of his career. At 37.6 cm (almost 15 inches), the gap is about the length of a standard school ruler and a quarter, and it means Hart's eye line sits around Johnson's chest when the two stand together. The two worked together on Central Intelligence, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), and the animated DC League of Super-Pets (2022), and they have kept up a long-running public routine of teasing each other about size on social media and in press tours. In the Jumanji films the joke is built into the premise: teenagers are pulled into a video game and assigned avatars, so a tall, athletic high-school football player finds himself inhabiting Hart's much smaller character, while a nervous, slight teenager becomes Johnson's towering hero.

Jumanji: The Next Level added another layer. Danny DeVito, at 147 cm one of the few co-stars Hart looks down on, played a grandfather whose personality ends up inside Johnson's avatar, adding another round of body-swap comedy built on mismatched sizes.

Next to basketball players

Hart has said repeatedly that he did not feel short until he started spending time with athletes. On Logan Paul's ImPaulsive podcast in 2023, as reported by Atlanta Black Star, he explained that he thought he was tall as a kid because all his friends were his size, and only realized otherwise when he began standing next to NBA players. The numbers explain why: a typical NBA player is listed around 198 cm (6′6″), about 40 cm taller than Hart, and a center like Shaquille O'Neal stands 58 cm taller. Standing beside O'Neal, Hart's head reaches roughly the level of O'Neal's lower chest. You can check the exact eye-line offset with the height difference calculator.

Moments when Hart's height made headlines

Hart's height has been discussed in reputable outlets mainly when he discusses it himself, which he does freely.

  • 2014, Oprah Winfrey interview. Atlanta Black Star recalled that Hart told Oprah he was confident in himself and used self-deprecating jokes about his height to take away other people's ability to mock him.
  • 2023, ImPaulsive podcast. As reported by Atlanta Black Star, Hart said he grew up thinking he was tall because his friends were his size, and only realized otherwise standing next to NBA players.
  • 2024, 60 Minutes. The sneaker and boots comments described above, which generated a wave of headlines about his "real" height.

The common thread is that Hart has never claimed to be taller than he is in a misleading way. He offers the barefoot number freely, then makes a joke about what shoes do for him.

How Kevin Hart compares with the average American man

Hart was born in Philadelphia on July 6, 1979. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) estimates that American men born in the late 1970s reached an average adult height of about 177.5 cm (5′10″). Hart's 158 cm is roughly 19.5 cm (7.7 inches) below that cohort average. You can explore the full century of American height data on the United States average height page.

The latest US measured data, from the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for August 2021 to August 2023, tells a similar story. For men aged 40 to 49, the group Hart belonged to at the time of that survey, the measured average was 176.4 cm and the 5th percentile was 162.3 cm. At 158 cm, Hart stands below the 5th percentile for his age group, meaning more than 95 out of every 100 American men his age are taller than him barefoot. You can check any height against the same NHANES tables with the height percentile calculator.

Benchmark Height Hart's difference
US men born ~1976 (NCD-RisC) 177.5 cm −19.5 cm
US men 40–49, mean (NHANES 2021–23) 176.4 cm −18.4 cm
US men 40–49, 5th percentile 162.3 cm −4.3 cm
US women 40–49, mean (NHANES 2021–23) 161.7 cm −3.7 cm

The last line is worth noting: Hart is a few centimeters shorter than the average American woman of his generation. That fact is the basis for a large share of his relationship material, and it explains why so many photos of Hart with female co-stars show him at or below their eye level.

Why the 5′2″ to 5′5″ range keeps circulating

A few factors explain why Hart's height is reported so inconsistently:

  1. Shoes are rarely mentioned. Most celebrity height figures come from interviews, press kits or agency bios, and almost none specify whether footwear was included. Hart's own 60 Minutes answer only became clear because he volunteered the sneaker detail.
  2. Comedians exaggerate in both directions. Hart's stage persona sometimes pretends to be taller than he is, and sometimes jokes that he is even smaller. Lines delivered as bits get transcribed as facts.
  3. Rounding. 158 cm is 5′2.2″. Some outlets round up to 5′2½″, others to 5′3″, and conversion back and forth between metric and imperial adds another source of drift. The height converter shows the exact values.
  4. Camera staging. On film and in promotional photos, shorter actors are often placed on risers or slightly closer to the camera, while Hart's films sometimes deliberately do the opposite to exaggerate the gap. Neither gives a reliable measurement.

For a like-for-like comparison, the barefoot 158 cm figure is the right one to use.

What 158 cm looks like in everyday terms

At 158 cm, Hart shares a height with many adult women and with some of the shortest professional athletes in history. A few reference points from the latest national survey and this site's data:

  • The measured mean for US women aged 40 to 49 in NHANES 2021–2023 is 161.7 cm, so Hart is about 3.7 cm below the average American woman his age.
  • The 5th percentile for all US men aged 20 and older in the same survey is 162.2 cm, so fewer than 1 in 20 American men are as short as Hart.
  • Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history, is listed at 160 cm, about 2 cm taller than Hart.
  • Danny DeVito, his Jumanji: The Next Level co-star, is listed at 147 cm, 11 cm shorter.
