How tall is Ariana Grande?
Ariana Grande is listed on this site at 157.5 cm (5′2″), the height she gave herself in a 2019 interview on the Zach Sang Show. It is also the figure Billboard uses. The interview, quoted by Nicki Swift, has a light-hearted quality that tells you a lot about how she thinks about her height: asked why she wears heels so often, Grande hesitated, joked about being "just 5," and then settled on 5′2″, adding that she has no choice but to wear heels.
Earlier statements give slightly different numbers. In a 2009 tweet, when she was a teenager, she celebrated a growth spurt that had taken her to 5′3″. In 2011 she was vaguer, describing herself as around 5 feet and "miniature." Those swings are typical of how young performers talk about their height, especially in casual social media posts, and they are part of why some outlets list her a little shorter or taller than 5′2″.
| Statement | Height | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 2009 tweet | 5′3″ (160 cm) | Celebrating a teenage growth spurt |
| 2011 tweet | about 5′0″ (152 cm) | Joking, self-described "miniature" |
| 2019 Zach Sang Show (site value) | 5′2″ (157.5 cm) | Explaining why she wears heels |
| Billboard listing | 5′2″ (157.5 cm) | Matches the 2019 figure |
The 2019 figure is the most recent and the most considered of her statements, and it lines up with Billboard, so it is the value used for comparisons here. You can see the precise conversion on the 5′2″ in cm page.
From Broadway to Nickelodeon: a small performer with a big voice
Grande was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida. Her professional career started on Broadway: in 2008 she was cast as Charlotte, a cheerleader, in the musical 13, a show performed entirely by teenagers. On stage, height is far more visible than on screen, because there are no camera angles to adjust and performers are seen in full against a fixed set. Teen musicals like 13 tend to cast performers of varied heights to reflect a real school, and Grande's small frame suited a young-teen character.
Her television breakthrough came on Nickelodeon's Victorious (2010–2013), in which she played Cat Valentine, a bubbly, red-haired student at a performing-arts high school. She reprised the character in the spin-off Sam & Cat (2013–2014). Cat was written as childlike and sweet, and Grande's height helped her look younger than she was; she was in her late teens and early twenties for most of the run. Her Victorious co-star Elizabeth Gillies, who played the sardonic Jade, is listed at 170.2 cm, about 13 cm taller, and the contrast between the two characters was partly visual.
The voice behind the frame
Grande is known for a four-octave vocal range that extends into the whistle register. Height has no meaningful bearing on vocal range: the length and thickness of the vocal folds are what matter, and they are not closely tied to overall stature in adults. Her career is a good example of how a performer's physical size can be almost irrelevant to the scale of the sound they produce.
The 2009 growth spurt: what the numbers say
Grande's 2009 tweet celebrating that she had grown to 5′3″ makes an interesting case study in teenage growth. She was 15 or 16 at the time. According to the CDC's 2000 growth charts, the median American girl is about 160.5 cm at 14, 161.9 cm at 15 and 162.6 cm at 16, and gains less than a centimeter more by age 20. In other words, most girls have reached nearly all of their adult height by their mid-teens, after a growth spurt that typically peaks around ages 11 to 12.
| Age | CDC median height (US girls) | Gain from previous row |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 151.5 cm | — |
| 14 | 160.5 cm | +9 cm |
| 15 | 161.9 cm | +1.4 cm |
| 16 | 162.6 cm | +0.7 cm |
| 18 | 163.1 cm | +0.5 cm |
| 20 | 163.3 cm | +0.2 cm |
So a mid-teen celebrating a new inch is plausible but unusual, and Grande's adult figure of 5′2″ suggests the 2009 number may have been rounded up, measured in shoes, or taken at a different time of day. Height itself varies slightly through the day: the discs in the spine compress under the body's weight, so most people measure a centimeter or so shorter in the evening than first thing in the morning. Casual home measurements, the kind a teenager might mention on social media, can easily differ by an inch.
Heels, boots and a signature silhouette
Grande's style has been closely connected to her height since the mid-2010s. Her best-known stage look combines oversized sweatshirts or short dresses with over-the-knee boots, often on high platform or stiletto heels. In the 2019 interview she linked the heels directly to her height.
Those heels can add a substantial amount. A typical stage boot with a 10 to 12 cm heel raises her from 157.5 cm to roughly 168 to 170 cm, putting her near the height of an average American man in his twenties. That shift is large enough to change how she appears in photographs beside other performers, and it explains much of the disagreement over her height online.
| Footwear | Approximate height | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Barefoot | 157.5 cm (5′2″) | — |
| Sneakers | ~160 cm (5′3″) | +2.5 cm |
| Stage boots, 10 cm heel | ~167.5 cm (5′6″) | +10 cm |
| Platform boots, 12 cm+ | ~170 cm (5′7″) | +12.5 cm |
Her high ponytail, which she has described as a signature style, adds to the effect visually. While hair does not count toward measured height, a tall hairstyle draws the eye upward and makes a performer look taller in photos and on stage.
Height on the concert stage
Grande's major tours, including the Honeymoon Tour (2015), the Dangerous Woman Tour (2017) and the Sweetener World Tour (2019), were staged in arenas where most of the audience sits far from the performer. For a 157.5 cm artist, staging choices do much of the work that height cannot. Raised platforms, moving risers, long catwalks and large video screens put her face and figure in front of fans in the upper tiers, and her heels and ponytail add visible height from a distance.
Choreography also adapts to body size. Shorter performers often have an advantage in quick, intricate movement because their limbs are shorter and their center of mass lower, and Grande's routines tend to emphasize precise, compact movement alongside a group of dancers who frame her. In 2019 she headlined the Coachella festival, one of the largest stages in popular music, again using height-adding staging rather than relying on stature.
None of this is unique to Grande. Many of pop's biggest touring artists are of average or below-average height, and arena production has developed a toolkit to make any performer read as larger than life.
Playing Glinda in Wicked
Grande's role as Glinda in Wicked (2024), Jon M. Chu's film adaptation of the Broadway musical, earned her an Academy Award nomination, and she returned for the second part, Wicked: For Good (2025). Glinda's costume design, with enormous ball gowns, tall shoes and a towering crown in some scenes, gave the character a commanding presence on screen regardless of the actress's height.
The role has an interesting height lineage. Kristin Chenoweth, who originated Glinda on Broadway in 2003, is listed on this site at 149.9 cm (4′11″), about 7.6 cm shorter than Grande. Both are small performers with operatic-range voices playing a character defined by sparkle and self-confidence, and Chenoweth appears briefly in the film.
Grande's co-lead, Cynthia Erivo, played Elphaba. Erivo is not yet listed in the site's database, so exact figures cannot be given here, but in the films the contrast between the two witches is built mainly through costume, color and staging rather than height.

Grande and Iggy Azalea
Grande's 2014 breakout single "Problem," featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The two performed it together at several high-profile award shows, and the 24.5 cm height difference between them was one of the most striking visual contrasts in pop that year.
Grande and Lady Gaga
"Rain on Me," Grande's 2020 duet with Lady Gaga, paired two of the shortest major stars in pop. At 155 cm, Gaga is about 2.5 cm shorter than Grande, and in the song's video both wear tall platform boots that bring them close to eye level. The track won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Grande and Nicki Minaj
Grande and Nicki Minaj have collaborated repeatedly, including on "Bang Bang" with Jessie J, which the RIAA certified diamond in 2024, and "Side to Side." Minaj, at 160 cm, is only 2.5 cm taller, and both favor high heels on stage, so they appear almost the same height in most performances.
How Grande compares with the average American woman
According to the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, American women born in the mid-1970s and mid-1990s averaged about 164.0 cm and 163.5 cm respectively, so the cohort average for Grande's 1993 birth year is roughly 163.6 cm (5′4½″). At 157.5 cm, Grande is about 6 cm (2.4 inches) shorter than the typical American woman of her generation. The full trend is on the United States average height page.
The CDC's 2021–2023 NHANES measurements give a closer view. For women aged 30 to 39, the mean height was 162.5 cm, the 15th percentile 154.8 cm and the 25th percentile 158.2 cm. Grande's 157.5 cm falls at roughly the 23rd percentile, meaning she is shorter than about three in four American women her age but taller than about one in four. You can check other heights with the height percentile calculator.
| Benchmark | Height | Grande's difference |
|---|---|---|
| US women born ~1993 (NCD-RisC) | ~163.6 cm | −6.1 cm |
| US women 30–39, mean (NHANES 2021–23) | 162.5 cm | −5 cm |
| US women 30–39, 25th percentile | 158.2 cm | −0.7 cm |
| US women 30–39, 15th percentile | 154.8 cm | +2.7 cm |
In other words, Grande is shorter than average but not unusually so. About a quarter of American women are her height or shorter, and in many countries 157.5 cm is close to the national average for women.
What 157.5 cm means around the world
Whether 5′2″ reads as short depends on where you are. Using the NCD-RisC averages for women born in 1996 that power this site's country pages, women in India average about 152.6 cm, so Grande would be about 5 cm taller than average there. In Japan (158.3 cm) and China (159.7 cm) she would be close to the national average. In the United States and the United Kingdom she is a few centimeters below average, and in the Netherlands, where women average 168.7 cm, she would be more than 11 cm shorter than the typical woman.
| Country (women born 1996) | Average height | Grande's difference |
|---|---|---|
| India | 152.6 cm | +4.9 cm |
| Japan | 158.3 cm | −0.8 cm |
| China | 159.7 cm | −2.2 cm |
| United States | 163.5 cm | −6 cm |
| Netherlands | 168.7 cm | −11.2 cm |
That global context is a useful corrective. In much of the world, Ariana Grande is simply an average-height woman; she reads as small mainly because so many of her photos place her beside tall collaborators or in the context of Hollywood.
