For a man

>95thpercentile

190 cm is above the 95th percentile for US men: taller than about 95% of US adult men. It is 14.9 cm (5.9 in) taller than the average US man (175.1 cm).

For a woman

>95thpercentile

190 cm is above the 95th percentile for US women: taller than about 95% of US adult women. It is 28.8 cm (11.3 in) taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm). An average woman standing alongside would reach about their neck.

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

190 cm in feet and inches

190 cm equals 6 feet 2.80 inches. The working: 190 ÷ 2.54 = 74.80 inches, and taking away 72 inches (six feet) leaves 2.80 inches. That factor of 2.54 is exact, because NIST and the other English-speaking standards bodies have defined the inch as precisely 25.4 millimeters since 1959.

To the nearest inch, 190 cm rounds up to 6′3″. A true 6′3″ is 190.50 cm, so the rounding adds half a centimeter. The window that rounds to 6′3″ runs from 189.23 cm to 191.77 cm, so 190 and 191 cm share the same imperial label.

In metric countries, 190 cm is one of those round numbers people remember. It marks a threshold where furniture, cars and clothing stop being designed with you in mind, as the sections below show.

Rarer than 1 in 20

The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) published percentiles only up to the 95th for its August 2021 to August 2023 measurements. For American men aged 20 and over, the 95th percentile is 187.2 cm, so 190 cm is beyond the top 5 percent. The survey's tallest age group, men aged 40 to 49, has a 95th percentile of 189.9 cm, a hair below 190.

US men, age group 90th percentile 95th percentile
20 and over 184.8 cm 187.2 cm
20–29 185.9 cm 188.1 cm
30–39 185.1 cm 187.1 cm
40–49 186.8 cm 189.9 cm
50–59 183.6 cm 185.6 cm
60–69 184.1 cm 186.6 cm
70–79 181.6 cm 184.1 cm

So in every age band, a 190 cm man is taller than at least 95 percent of his peers. Because NHANES stops at the 95th percentile, the tables cannot say exactly how far beyond the top 5 percent he is.

For women, 190 cm is almost 29 cm (11.3 inches) above the NHANES female mean of 161.2 cm and about 17.5 cm above the 95th percentile of 172.5 cm.

Globally, the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) reports that the tallest national average belongs to Dutch men born in 1996, at 182.5 cm. A 190 cm man is 7.5 cm taller than that.

Sleeping at 190 cm: the bed problem

At 190 cm, bed length becomes a real consideration rather than an afterthought. A survey of international bed sizes highlights how often standard mattresses stop at or below this height:

Bed type Typical length
North American twin or full 189 cm (74.5 in)
North American twin XL, queen or king 202 cm (79.5 in)
North American California king 212 cm (83.5 in)
French or Italian single (common size) 190 cm
Many European singles and doubles 200 cm

The same source cites a rule of thumb that 210 cm beds may be recommended for people 190 cm or taller, and 220 cm beds for people over 200 cm. In other words, 190 cm is where the advice changes. A standard North American twin is actually a centimeter shorter than a 190 cm person, and even 200 cm beds leave only 10 cm for pillows and the natural stretch of the feet. Among the common North American sizes, the California king is the only one that reaches the 210 cm guideline.

Doors, ceilings and everyday clearance

Standard doors are generous enough for most people at 190 cm, but not by much. Customary US door heights are 78 or 80 inches (about 198 or 203 cm), leaving roughly 8 to 13 cm of clearance. In Germany, the DIN 18101 standard defines common interior door panel heights of 1,985 mm, or about 198.5 cm, which leaves under 9 cm. Low beams, basement stairs and older houses can be tighter still.

Bunk and loft beds are another squeeze. The bed-size survey notes that at least 40 inches (about 1 meter) of space between the mattress and the ceiling is generally recommended so that an average-sized adult can sit up;

190 cm against the tallest populations and people

Even among the world's tallest groups, 190 cm stands out. NCD-RisC's estimates put the average man born in 1996 at 182.5 cm in the Netherlands and at more than 181 cm in Belgium, Estonia, Latvia and Denmark. The Wikipedia overview of human height describes the Nilotic peoples of South Sudan as among the tallest in the world, citing a 1953–54 study in which Dinka Ruweng men averaged 181 cm and Shilluk men 182 cm. A 190 cm man would be roughly 8 cm above all of these averages.

History makes the height look even more exceptional. The same overview cites burial data from Leiden showing that before 1850 the average man there was about 167 cm tall, which means a 190 cm man would have stood 23 cm above the typical Dutchman of the early nineteenth century, in a country that is now the tallest in the world.

At the far extreme, the record books put 190 cm in perspective from the other side. The tallest man in modern history, Robert Wadlow of Illinois, measured 272 cm (8′11″) at his death in 1940, and the tallest living man, Sultan Kösen of Turkey, is listed at 251 cm (8′3″). Next to Wadlow, a 190 cm man would be 82 cm shorter, and next to Kösen, 61 cm shorter. By the standards of the very tallest humans on record, 190 cm is merely tall.

Sleeves and clothing at 190 cm

Height is one of the measurements European clothing sizes are built on. The standard EN 13402 links body height to arm length in a table for men's shirts: 188 cm corresponds to an arm length of 68 cm and 192 cm to 69 cm. A 190 cm person sits between the two, so a sleeve around 68 to 69 cm is the standard's starting point. Because the table steps up by a centimeter of arm length for every 4 cm of height, a 190 cm man needs about 4 cm more sleeve than a 176 cm man, a difference that standard ready-to-wear sizes, graded mainly on chest girth, do not always build in.

Famous people at about 190 cm

Several high-profile people are listed at 190 or 190.5 cm (6′3″) in the site's database:

  • Donald Trump: UPI reported that the White House physical published in April 2025 logged him at 6-foot-3 and 224 pounds. That is 190.5 cm, the figure used on Donald Trump's height page. A compilation of presidential heights also lists him at 6′3″ but notes that other public records, including a 2012 driver's license, give 6′2″. On that compilation, only Abraham Lincoln (6′4″) and Lyndon B. Johnson (6′3½″) rank taller among presidents.
  • Hugh Jackman is listed at 190.5 cm; see Hugh Jackman's height.
  • Derrick Rose: NBA.com lists him at 6′3″ (1.91 m). He was the first pick in the 2008 draft, according to the same page.
  • Pete Davidson and Andrew Tate are also listed at 190.5 cm.

Among fictional characters, Satoru Gojo and Aoi Todo from Jujutsu Kaisen are both listed at 190 cm, Superman's DC listing of 6′3″ converts to 190.5 cm, and Trafalgar Law from One Piece is 191 cm. Gojo's page, Satoru Gojo's height, puts him next to the rest of the Jujutsu Kaisen cast, where he towers over most characters.

Why listed heights near 190 cm disagree

The two figures attached to Donald Trump, 6′3″ in his 2025 physical and 6′2″ on a 2012 driver's license, illustrate a general point: listed heights for the same person often differ by an inch. The two figures come from different kinds of records, a medical examination and an identity document, and the compilation does not explain how the license figure was obtained. Even carefully measured values vary with posture and time of day: a 2011 study in Clinical Biomechanics recorded an average daily swing in stature of about 17.6 mm in healthy adults.

Age also plays a part. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, which measured 2,084 adults repeatedly over years, found that men lose about 3 cm of height on average between ages 30 and 70 and about 5 cm by age 80. A man measured at 191 cm in his thirties could plausibly measure closer to 188 cm decades later, without either figure being wrong at the time it was recorded. For any celebrity or politician, it is wise to treat a single listing as an approximation and to look at when and how it was taken.

Growing up to 190 cm

On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age chart, which runs to age 20, a 190 cm young man is near the top of the reference curve. Calculated from the chart's LMS parameters, 190 cm corresponds to about the 99th percentile at 16 and about the 97th percentile at 18 and 20. The median boy reaches roughly 176.8 cm by 20, so 190 cm is about 13 cm above the median curve.

A teenager on track for 190 cm may be the tallest in his class for years, then see peers catch up somewhat as they finish growing. Growth charts describe a population, not an individual forecast; questions about a child's growth belong with a pediatrician.

Couples where one partner is 190 cm

The 2013 PLOS ONE study by Gert Stulp and colleagues, based on 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, offers a frame for large height gaps. Men were taller than their partners in 92.5% of couples, and couples where the man was 25 cm or more taller were somewhat rarer than chance would predict (13.9% against 15.7%).

For a 190 cm man, the 25 cm mark corresponds to a partner of 165 cm. According to NHANES, that is roughly the 70th percentile for American women, so most potential partners would fall into the "25 cm or more" zone. The study's authors stress that height preferences show up in real couples only modestly, and the numbers describe tendencies rather than rules. To see what a 25 or 30 cm gap looks like, the height difference calculator draws both people to scale.

Measuring 190 cm accurately

For tall people, the main sources of error are posture and equipment. A tape measure that sags, or a mark made at an angle on a wall, can easily cost a centimeter. The NHANES procedures manual describes the gold standard: barefoot, heels together, the back of the head, shoulder blades, buttocks and heels against a backboard, the head level, a deep breath, and a rigid headpiece lowered firmly onto the crown. At home, a hardback book pressed flat against the wall and a steel tape measure reproduce most of that.

For heights just below and above this one, see 188 cm, which matches 6′2″ almost exactly, and 193 cm, the height of Abraham Lincoln.

Frequently asked questions

Is 190 cm 6 foot 3?
