183 cm is the first centimeter past six feet
183 cm converts to 6 feet 0.05 inches. Divided by 2.54, it gives 72.05 inches, and 72 of those inches make six feet, leaving five hundredths of an inch. Because NIST defines the inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters (and the yard as exactly 0.9144 meters), six feet comes out at precisely 182.88 cm. That makes 183 cm the first whole-centimeter height that clears the six-foot line, by 1.2 millimeters.

In the other direction, 182 cm is 71.65 inches, which also rounds to 6′0″, but a person who is 182 cm and says "six feet" is rounding up by nearly a centimeter. Many people treat six feet as a meaningful threshold, so this tiny margin matters more than the arithmetic suggests. Anyone who measures 183 cm can say "six foot" without rounding at all.
Six feet in the American height distribution
How common is six feet? The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) answers that with unusual precision. In its August 2021 to August 2023 measurements of 2,690 men aged 20 and over, the 85th percentile was exactly 183.0 cm. In inches, Table 8 of the same report gives the 85th percentile as 72.1. Roughly 85 percent of American men are shorter than 183 cm and about 15 percent are as tall or taller.
That single figure hides a range across age groups:
| US men, age group | 85th percentile | 183 cm percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 20 and over | 183.0 cm | ~85th |
| 20–29 | 184.7 cm | ~80th |
| 30–39 | 183.4 cm | ~83rd |
| 40–49 | 185.0 cm | ~77th |
| 50–59 | 181.3 cm | ~89th |
| 60–69 | 182.5 cm | ~87th |
| 70–79 | 179.8 cm | ~93rd |
| 80 and older | 177.9 cm | above 90th |
Among men in their forties, about one in four is 183 cm or taller; among men in their seventies, fewer than one in ten. Some of that difference reflects shorter older cohorts, and some reflects height loss with age. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging found that height loss starts around 30 and averages about 3 cm for men between 30 and 70 and about 5 cm by 80. Many men who were six feet at 30 measure closer to 5′10″ in old age.
For women, 183 cm is extraordinarily tall. It is more than 10 cm above the NHANES 95th percentile for women (172.5 cm) and about 22 cm above the female mean of 161.2 cm.
The Dutch average, almost exactly
The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) pooled measured heights from 1,472 population-based studies to estimate adult height in 200 countries. Its headline finding was that the tallest people over the century studied were men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of the twentieth century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm. For the 1996 birth cohort, the Dutch male average is 182.5 cm, just half a centimeter below 183.
In other words, 183 cm is roughly the height of the typical young Dutch man, the tallest national average in the world. A few other countries come close:
| Country | Men born 1996 | Women born 1996 |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 182.5 cm | 168.7 cm |
| Estonia | 181.6 cm | 168.7 cm |
| Denmark | 181.4 cm | 167.2 cm |
| Latvia | 181.4 cm | 169.8 cm |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | 180.9 cm | 165.8 cm |
| United States | 177.1 cm | 163.5 cm |
The Netherlands was not always at the top. Dutch men born in 1896 averaged 169.4 cm, slightly below American men of the same generation (171.1 cm). Over the next hundred years the Dutch gained 13 cm while the United States gained only 6. NCD-RisC describes the US as having had the smallest gain of any high-income country, which allowed continental Europe to overtake it.
At the other extreme, NCD-RisC reports that men in Timor-Leste, Yemen and Laos average only about 160 cm, a gap of 22 to 23 cm from the Dutch. A 183 cm man would tower over most people in those countries.
Six feet in professional basketball
Outside the NBA, 183 cm is tall. Inside it, six feet is close to the minimum for a long career. Two of the best-known guards of the past three decades are listed there:
- Allen Iverson: NBA.com lists him at 6′0″ (1.83 m) and 165 lb (75 kg). He was the first overall pick of the 1996 draft and averaged 26.7 points per game over a 15-year career, according to the same page; see Allen Iverson's height.
- Chris Paul: NBA.com also lists him at 6′0″ (1.83 m), at 175 lb (79 kg). He was the fourth pick in 2005 and the league credits him with 20 years of experience; see Chris Paul's height.
For comparison, NBA.com lists Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving at 6′2″ (1.88 m) and Anthony Edwards and Russell Westbrook at 6′4″ (1.93 m). Even among guards, the position where smaller players survive, six feet sits at the bottom of the range. Iverson and Paul built long careers on speed, ball-handling and passing rather than size.
Those listings deserve an asterisk. For most of NBA history, teams and players controlled how heights were published, and CBS Sports noted in 2019 that Iverson had "earned dubious 6'0'' height listings." That September, according to a New York Times report summarized by CBS Sports, the league told teams to submit exact heights within the first week of training camp, measured with shoes off. Players who were listed at a rounded "6′0″" in the past may not have been 183 cm barefoot.
Presidents at six feet
Six feet also turns up repeatedly among American presidents. A compilation of presidential heights, drawn from historical records and biographies, lists seven presidents at 6′0″ (183 cm): James Monroe, John Tyler, James Buchanan, James A. Garfield, Warren G. Harding, Gerald Ford and Joe Biden. The same compilation puts the average height of all US presidents at about 5′11″ (180 cm), with Abraham Lincoln the tallest at 6′4″ (193 cm). Joe Biden's page, Joe Biden's height, shows him next to other modern presidents.
Famous people listed at 183 cm
Beyond sport and politics, six feet is one of the most common heights in celebrity listings:
- Drake: Billboard's artist page gives his height as 6′0″, which the site records as 182.9 cm.
- Harry Styles, Chris Evans and David Beckham are all listed at 183 cm in the site's database. Harry Styles' height compares him with other musicians.
Among fictional characters, Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan is listed at 183 cm in official character data, and Wonder Woman's 6′0″ DC listing converts to 182.9 cm.
As always, celebrity heights are approximations. They are rarely measured barefoot under the conditions used in clinical surveys, and a one-centimeter disagreement between sources is normal.
Growing up to six feet
For parents of a tall teenager, the CDC 2000 stature-for-age growth chart gives some perspective. Calculated from the chart's LMS parameters, 183 cm corresponds to about the 96th percentile for a 15-year-old boy, the 90th at 16, the 83rd at 18 and about the 81st at 20. The median boy reaches only about 176.8 cm by 20, so a six-foot young man is well above the reference median, though not exceptionally rare.
A teenager who reaches six feet early may stop growing earlier than his peers, and one who is shorter at 15 may catch up. Only a pediatrician who tracks a child's measurements over time can say whether a growth pattern is unusual.
Beds, doors and fit at 183 cm
The six-foot mark is also where furniture starts to feel short:
- Beds. Standard North American twin and full mattresses are about 189 cm (74.5 inches) long, so a 183 cm sleeper has about 6 cm of clearance before allowing for a pillow. Queen and king mattresses are about 202 cm. In South Africa, where standard beds are 188 cm long, the 200 cm "XL" length is recommended for people taller than 183 cm.
- Doors. Customary US door heights are 78 or 80 inches (about 198 or 203 cm), leaving 15 to 20 cm of headroom at 183 cm.
These are not hard limits, but they explain why many people at six feet and above choose queen-length beds even when sleeping alone.
Why so many people claim six feet
Six feet is a height people like to report, and measured data show the gap between claim and reality. NCD-RisC refused to use self-reported heights in its global estimates at all, explaining that they carry a systematic bias that varies by geography, age, sex and socioeconomic characteristics. Only stadiometer measurements went into its numbers.
The direction of that bias is consistent. A 2018 meta-analysis by Seijo and colleagues, pooling 21 studies of 18,749 women, found that self-reported height exceeded measured height by 0.36 cm on average. Small as that is, it pushes borderline heights over round-number thresholds. Someone measured at 182 cm who reports "six foot" has rounded up by 0.9 cm; someone at 181 cm has rounded up by nearly 2 cm.
The NHANES numbers give a reality check. Only about 15 percent of American men measure 183 cm or more, and the 75th percentile is 180.1 cm, so a man who is genuinely six feet barefoot is taller than roughly five in six of his peers. Interpolating the same percentiles, roughly one American man in nine measures between 180 and 183 cm. That is exactly the zone where a little rounding up turns a measured 5′11″ into a reported 6′0″, and it is large enough to inflate any self-reported count of six-footers noticeably. That is not a criticism of anyone; it is simply how rounding and self-report interact. The only way to know for certain is a careful barefoot measurement, ideally in the morning.
Measuring whether you are really six feet
If six feet matters to you, measure carefully. Stand barefoot against a wall with heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and the back of your head touching it, keep your gaze level, take a breath, and lower a hard object such as a book until it presses on the crown of your head. Measure in the morning, when the spine is longest, and average two or three readings.
Any careful reading of 182.9 cm or more means you have cleared six feet. A reading of 182 cm still rounds to 6′0″, but the next height down with its own page, 180 cm, shows how quickly the imperial label changes below that. To compare 183 cm with anyone else, the height difference calculator draws both people to scale.
Frequently asked questions
Is 183 cm exactly 6 feet?

What percentage of American men are 183 cm or taller?
About 15 percent. In CDC NHANES 2021–2023 data, the 85th percentile for US men aged 20 and over is exactly 183.0 cm, so roughly 85 percent are shorter.
Is 183 cm tall in the Netherlands?
It is only slightly above average there. NCD-RisC estimates that Dutch men born in 1996 average 182.5 cm, the tallest of any country, so 183 cm is about half a centimeter above the Dutch norm.
Which US presidents were 6 feet (183 cm) tall?
A compilation of presidential heights lists James Monroe, John Tyler, James Buchanan, James A. Garfield, Warren G. Harding, Gerald Ford and Joe Biden at 6′0″ (183 cm).
Are NBA players listed at 6 feet really 183 cm?
Not always. Listings were controlled by teams for decades, and CBS Sports noted in 2019 that Allen Iverson's 6′0″ listing did not hold up to much scrutiny. That year the NBA told teams to submit exact heights measured without shoes.
Do I need a longer bed at 183 cm?
Standard North American twin and full mattresses are about 189 cm long, leaving only around 6 cm. Queen and king mattresses are about 202 cm. In South Africa, the 200 cm XL length is recommended for people over 183 cm.
