Hugh Jackman's height: 6′3″

The site lists Hugh Jackman at 190.5 cm (6′3″). HELLO! magazine's profile of the actor describes him as "the 6ft 3in star," and that is the figure most consistently used across entertainment coverage. Like most actors, Jackman has never been officially measured in public, so this is an industry and press listing rather than a certified number. It is consistent with how he appears beside co-stars of well-documented height, including Ryan Reynolds, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman.

What makes Jackman's height unusual is not the number itself but the role it is attached to. For more than two decades he played Wolverine, a character Marvel has always presented as short. The actor most closely identified with one of the smallest major superheroes is a man well over six feet tall.

Too tall for Wolverine: the casting story

The history of the first X-Men film (2000) includes one of the best-known height stories in Hollywood. According to the production history summarized on the film's Wikipedia page, Russell Crowe turned the role of Wolverine down and recommended his friend Jackman, then largely unknown outside Australian theater. Jackman auditioned but was initially rejected for being too tall.

The part went instead to Dougray Scott, who had signed a multi-film deal. Scott then had to withdraw because of scheduling conflicts with Mission: Impossible 2 and injuries from a motorbike accident. Jackman was cast about three weeks into filming, based on a successful audition. HELLO! recounts his own story of being stopped at Canadian customs on the way to that audition without a work visa and talking his way through by explaining he might be Wolverine.

That initial rejection makes sense when you look at the source material. The site's character data lists the comic-book Wolverine at 160 cm (5′3″), which makes Jackman roughly 30 cm, or about a foot, taller than the character as written.

Height Difference from comic Wolverine
Wolverine (comics) 160 cm (5′3″) —
Daniel Radcliffe (frequent fan casting) 165 cm (5′5″) +5 cm
Russell Crowe (first choice, declined) 182 cm (6′0″) +22 cm
Hugh Jackman 190.5 cm (6′3″) +30.5 cm

The Radcliffe row reflects a running joke among fans who want a comic-accurate Wolverine. Radcliffe, at 165 cm, is the closest of these actors to the character's official height, and he has repeatedly denied rumors that he will take the role.

The Radcliffe rumor and who comes next

Because Jackman's Wolverine was so far from the comics, the question of who might eventually replace him often turns to height. Daniel Radcliffe has been the most persistent fan suggestion, largely because at 165 cm he is close to the character's handbook height. On ABC's The View in March 2022, as reported by The Playlist, Radcliffe denied the rumor and explained that because Wolverine is short in the comics, people periodically go looking for a short actor. The gap between the two men is about 25.5 cm, or 10 inches, which is a measure of how differently a future Wolverine could look if a studio ever chose comic accuracy over the template Jackman set.

How the films handled a tall Wolverine

The X-Men films never tried to make Jackman look like a 5′3″ man. Instead, Wolverine's height was simply de-emphasized. He was surrounded by an ensemble that included several tall actors, such as Famke Janssen (183 cm in the site's data) as Jean Grey, so his own height rarely stood out. The character's menace came from his physicality, claws and temper rather than his size relative to others.

That approach set a pattern. Over 17 years, from X-Men (2000) to Logan (2017), Jackman played the character in nine films, and Wikipedia notes that he earned a Guinness World Record for the longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero, a record that has since been surpassed. Logan was billed as his final appearance, but he returned in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with a worldwide gross of about $1.338 billion.

Deadpool & Wolverine and the height gag

Deadpool & Wolverine paired Jackman with Ryan Reynolds, and the two leads are almost exactly the same size. The site lists Reynolds at 188 cm, 2.5 cm shorter than Jackman. Fans have often noted the irony: in the comics, Deadpool towers over Wolverine, while on screen the two look like equals. The film's multiverse premise even played with alternate versions of Wolverine, which gave the filmmakers room to joke about the many ways the character could have been cast.

Hugh Jackman next to his co-stars

Beyond the X-Men films, Jackman has worked across musicals, dramas and action films. Here is how he compares with some notable co-stars, using the site's data:

Film Co-star Co-star height (site data) Difference
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Ryan Reynolds 188 cm Jackman +2.5 cm
Les Misérables (2012) Russell Crowe 182 cm Jackman +8.5 cm
The Prestige (2006) Christian Bale 183 cm Jackman +7.5 cm
Australia (2008) Nicole Kidman 180 cm Jackman +10.5 cm
The Greatest Showman (2017) Zendaya 178 cm Jackman +12.5 cm
X-Men films Patrick Stewart 178 cm Jackman +12.5 cm
X-Men films Famke Janssen 183 cm Jackman +7.5 cm

Les Misérables and The Prestige

In Les Misérables (2012), Jackman played Jean Valjean opposite Russell Crowe's Javert. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe. Crowe, who had turned down Wolverine and recommended Jackman, is listed at 182 cm, so the hunter and the hunted were separated by about 8.5 cm. In Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006), Jackman and Christian Bale played rival magicians, and their 7.5 cm gap is visible in their many confrontations.

Australia and Nicole Kidman

In Baz Luhrmann's Australia (2008), Jackman starred with fellow Australian Nicole Kidman, who is listed at 180 cm. Kidman is one of the tallest leading women in Hollywood, so this was one of the few pairings in which his co-star was close to his height, with a gap of about 10.5 cm.

The Greatest Showman

In The Greatest Showman (2017), Jackman played the showman P. T. Barnum, and the soundtrack earned him a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack. Zendaya, who played the trapeze artist Anne Wheeler, is listed at 178 cm, about 12.5 cm shorter than Jackman. The film's circus setting made height a visual theme in its own right, with performers of very different sizes sharing the ring.

Jackman is not the only Marvel mismatch

Jackman's Wolverine is the most extreme case, but the Marvel films rarely matched actors to the heights in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, which is the reference the site uses for its comic-character data. The table compares several characters' handbook heights with the actors best known for playing them.

Character Handbook height (site data) Actor Actor height (site data) Actor vs character
Wolverine 160 cm Hugh Jackman 190.5 cm +30.5 cm
Thanos 200.7 cm Josh Brolin 178 cm −22.7 cm
Iron Man 185.4 cm Robert Downey Jr. 173 cm −12.4 cm
Captain America 188 cm Chris Evans 183 cm −5 cm
Thor 198.1 cm Chris Hemsworth 191 cm −7.1 cm
Spider-Man 177.8 cm Tom Holland 173 cm −4.8 cm

The pattern is revealing. Almost every actor in the table is shorter than the character as written, because superheroes in comics tend to be drawn larger than life. Jackman is the great exception: the only one of these leads who is taller than his character, and by a wider margin than any of the others is shorter. Thanos is the closest rival in the opposite direction, with Josh Brolin about 23 cm shorter than the handbook figure, a gap the films closed entirely with motion capture and digital scaling.

In other words, studios have generally been happy to shrink giants and enlarge average-sized heroes as long as the casting works. Jackman's 17-year run shows how little audiences minded. For most viewers, the 6′3″ Wolverine is the Wolverine.

A tall musical theater star

Before Hollywood, Jackman trained and worked in theater, and he remains one of the few major film stars with a sustained musical theater career. He won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz, and from 2021 to 2023 he starred as Harold Hill in the Broadway revival of The Music Man, earning another Tony nomination. He has hosted the Tony Awards four times.

In 2019 he toured arenas internationally with a concert show built around songs from his stage and film musicals, an unusual move for a film star and a reminder that his first professional identity was as a song-and-dance man.

Height plays differently on stage than on film. In a theater, an actor's height is visible from every seat at once, with no camera to adjust it. A 6′3″ leading man is noticeably tall on a Broadway stage, and directors often use that presence for characters such as Harold Hill, a charismatic con man who dominates every room he enters. Jackman's height also matters in dance: long limbs read clearly from the back of a large theater, which suits the big production numbers of The Greatest Showman and The Music Man.

How Hugh Jackman compares with the average Australian man

Jackman was born in Sydney on October 12, 1968. NCD-RisC estimates for Australia put men born in 1956 at 176.6 cm and those born in 1976 at 178.6 cm, so Australian men of his generation averaged roughly 177 to 178 cm.

Comparison group Average height Jackman's difference
Australian men, 1956 birth cohort 176.6 cm +13.9 cm
Australian men, 1976 birth cohort 178.6 cm +11.9 cm
Australian women, 1976 birth cohort 164.9 cm +25.6 cm
Australian men, 1896 birth cohort 168.9 cm +21.6 cm

At 190.5 cm, Jackman is about 13 cm (5 inches) taller than the average Australian man of his generation, placing him in roughly the top few percent of the male population. Australia's height trend has been strong over the past century: NCD-RisC estimates that Australian men gained more than 10 cm between the 1896 and 1996 birth cohorts, from 168.9 cm to 179.2 cm. Today, Australian men are among the taller populations in the English-speaking world.

For comparison, Jackman would also be well above average in the United States or the United Kingdom, where NCD-RisC puts men of similar cohorts at about 177 to 178 cm. You can see where any height falls in a population with the height percentile calculator.

Family and build

Jackman married Australian actor Deborra-Lee Furness in 1996, and HELLO! reports that the couple adopted a son in 2000 and a daughter in 2005. They separated in 2023. Reputable sources have not published heights for his parents or siblings, so the site does not speculate on whether his height runs in the family. No official weight has been published for him, though his physical transformations for the Wolverine role were widely covered in the entertainment press. The site does not list a weight.

What 190.5 cm looks like

At 190.5 cm, Jackman is the same height as Donald Trump and the comic-book Superman in the site's data, and a little taller than Ryan Reynolds, Elon Musk and Christian Bale. Standing next to the comic-book Wolverine he played for so long, he would tower over him by about a foot.
