185 cm compared with average heights
To scale against the average US adult man (175.1 cm, 5′9″) and woman (161.2 cm, 5′3″), measured in NHANES 2021–2023.
For a man
~90thpercentile
185 cm is around the 90th percentile for US men: taller than about 90% of US adult men. It is 9.9 cm (3.9 in) taller than the average US man (175.1 cm).
For a woman
>95thpercentile
185 cm is above the 95th percentile for US women: taller than about 95% of US adult women. It is 23.8 cm (9.4 in) taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm). An average woman standing alongside would reach about their chin.
Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

185 cm in feet and inches
185 cm is 6 feet 0.83 inches, or 72.83 inches in total. To get there, divide by 2.54 (the exact number of centimeters in an inch, fixed in 1959 according to NIST) and subtract 72 inches for six feet. What remains is 0.83 of an inch.
Rounded to the nearest inch, that is 6′1″. A true 6′1″ equals 185.42 cm, so 185 cm sits 0.42 cm below it, close enough that the two are used interchangeably on most rosters and profiles.

The 6′1″ label spans 184.15 cm to 186.69 cm (72.5 to 73.5 inches). So 184, 185 and 186 cm all round to the same imperial height, and only 187 cm crosses into 6′2″ territory.
Taller than nine in ten American men
Among American adults, 185 cm marks almost exactly the 90th percentile for men. The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which measured 2,690 men aged 20 and over with a stadiometer between August 2021 and August 2023, published a 90th percentile of 184.8 cm. Its inch table gives 72.7 inches. Put simply, about one American man in ten is 185 cm or taller.
The figure varies by age group:
| US men, age group | 90th percentile | 95th percentile | 185 cm percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 and over | 184.8 cm | 187.2 cm | ~90th |
| 20–29 | 185.9 cm | 188.1 cm | ~86th |
| 30–39 | 185.1 cm | 187.1 cm | ~90th |
| 40–49 | 186.8 cm | 189.9 cm | ~85th |
| 50–59 | 183.6 cm | 185.6 cm | ~94th |
| 60–69 | 184.1 cm | 186.6 cm | ~92nd |
| 70–79 | 181.6 cm | 184.1 cm | above 95th |
Among men in their forties, the tallest age group in this survey, about 15 percent reach 185 cm. Among men in their seventies, fewer than 5 percent do. You can check any other age and height with the height percentile calculator.
For women, 185 cm is far outside the usual range. The NHANES 95th percentile for women aged 20 and over is 172.5 cm, so a 185 cm woman is about 12.5 cm above that cutoff and nearly 24 cm above the female mean of 161.2 cm.
Above every national average in the world
The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) estimated adult height in 200 countries using measured data from more than 18.6 million people. Its tallest population was men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of the twentieth century, averaging just over 182.5 cm. That means 185 cm exceeds the average male height of every country in the dataset, by about 2.5 cm in the Netherlands and by much more elsewhere:
| Country | Average man (born 1996) | Gap to 185 cm |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 182.5 cm | 2.5 cm |
| Denmark | 181.4 cm | 3.6 cm |
| Germany | 179.9 cm | 5.1 cm |
| United States | 177.1 cm | 7.9 cm |
| China | 171.8 cm | 13.2 cm |
| Japan | 170.8 cm | 14.2 cm |
| India | 164.9 cm | 20.1 cm |
Our World in Data, which publishes the same NCD-RisC series, puts the global average man born in 1996 at about 171 cm. A 185 cm man is roughly 14 cm, or five and a half inches, taller than that worldwide average.
For women the gap is far larger. NCD-RisC finds the tallest women born in 1996 in Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and the Czech Republic, where averages pass 168 cm, and the shortest in Guatemala at 149.4 cm. A 185 cm woman would be roughly 15 cm above the average in the tallest of those countries and more than 35 cm above the average in the shortest. Our World in Data notes that men are taller than women in every country, by about 12 cm on average worldwide, so a 185 cm woman outstrips not only other women but the average man in every nation in the dataset.
Over the Mercury capsule limit
Historically, 185 cm would have closed at least one door. NASA notes that its first astronauts, chosen in 1959, had to be shorter than 5′11″ (180.34 cm) to fit inside the Mercury spacecraft. At 185 cm, a candidate would have been nearly 5 cm over the limit, however well qualified.
Famous people listed at 185 cm
The 6′1″ mark is shared by a striking mix of athletes, actors and politicians.
- Cristiano Ronaldo: UEFA's player profile lists him at 185 cm and 80 kg, the same height this site uses. At 185 cm he is taller than nine in ten American men, a useful reminder that elite forwards come in a wide range of sizes. See Cristiano Ronaldo's height for comparisons with Messi and other players.
- Venus Williams: the WTA lists her at 6′1″ (1.85 m). For a woman, that height is far beyond the 95th percentile in the United States; her page, Venus Williams' height, shows her next to her sister Serena.
- Robert Pattinson is listed at 185 cm, and Leonardo DiCaprio at 185.4 cm (exactly 6′1″) in the site's database.
- John F. Kennedy: listed at 185 cm. Among fictional characters, Portgas D. Ace from One Piece and Chris Redfield from Resident Evil are both given as 185 cm, and Iron Man's Marvel listing of 6′1″ converts to 185.4 cm.
185 cm in women's tennis
Tennis offers a neat illustration of how unusual 185 cm is for a woman, because the WTA publishes heights on every player profile. Venus Williams' 6′1″ stands out even among elite players:
| Player | WTA listed height |
|---|---|
| Maria Sharapova | 6′2″ (1.88 m) |
| Venus Williams | 6′1″ (1.85 m) |
| Serena Williams | 5′9″ (1.75 m) |
| Coco Gauff | 5′9″ (1.75 m) |
Sharapova is the one player in this group taller than 185 cm. Serena Williams' WTA listing of 5′9″, which this site uses, differs from the 178 cm (5′10″) many other sources quote, a reminder that athlete listings vary by source.
Presidents at 6′1″
Kennedy is one of three presidents listed at this height. A compilation of presidential heights built from historical records and biographies gives Andrew Jackson, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan as 6′1″ (185 cm). The same compilation lists the average of all presidents at about 5′11″ (180 cm), with Abraham Lincoln the tallest at 6′4″ and James Madison the shortest at 5′4″. So a 185 cm president stands about 5 cm above the presidential average, and roughly 8 cm above the average of all American men today.
Those historical figures should be read with care. Many predate standardized measurement, and some come from contemporary descriptions rather than a stadiometer. Even for Kennedy, the same compilation notes that a physical examination report from October 1941 recorded him at 6′0″ (183 cm), an inch below the commonly quoted figure.
185 cm and couples
Height differences between partners have been studied in detail. A 2013 PLOS ONE paper by Gert Stulp and colleagues, analyzing 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, found that the man was taller in 92.5% of couples, a little more often than the 89.8% expected by chance. The researchers also detected a weaker "male not too tall" pattern: couples where the man was 25 cm or more taller occurred in 13.9% of cases, against 15.7% expected at random.
For a 185 cm man, that 25 cm threshold falls at a partner height of 160 cm, which is almost exactly the average American woman (161.2 cm in NHANES). In other words, a 185 cm man with an average-height partner is right at the edge of the gap that couples in the study tended, slightly, to avoid. The authors stress that these preferences translate into real pairings only modestly, and plenty of couples fall outside them. The height difference calculator shows what a 24 or 25 cm gap looks like, including where the shorter partner's eyes line up.
Staying 185 cm: height over a lifetime
A man who measures 185 cm at 30 will probably not measure 185 cm at 80. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging followed 2,084 men and women for years, measuring the same people repeatedly, and found that height loss begins at about age 30 and speeds up with age. Men lost about 3 cm on average between 30 and 70, and about 5 cm by 80.
Applied to a 185 cm man, those averages suggest something like 182 cm at 70 and 180 cm at 80, although individuals vary widely. This is one reason the NHANES table above shows 185 cm as a 90th-percentile height overall but a 95th-plus height among men in their seventies: the older men in the survey were not only born into shorter cohorts but have also lost some height since their youth. If you notice a large or sudden loss of height, that is worth mentioning to a doctor.
Growing up to 185 cm
On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age growth chart, the reference used by US pediatricians, 185 cm is very tall for a teenager but less unusual for a young adult. Calculated from the chart's published LMS parameters, it corresponds to about:
| Boy's age | Median height | 185 cm percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 15 years | 170.1 cm | ~98th |
| 16 years | 173.6 cm | ~94th |
| 18 years | 176.2 cm | ~89th |
| 20 years | 176.8 cm | ~87th |
A 15-year-old at 185 cm is in the top 2 percent for his age. By 20, the same height is in roughly the top 13 percent on the reference curve. Growth charts describe a population; an individual child's pattern is best interpreted by a pediatrician who can track measurements over time.
Beds, sleeves and everyday fit at 185 cm
At 6′1″, a few everyday items start to feel short.
- Beds. Standard North American twin and full mattresses are about 189 cm (74.5 inches) long, leaving roughly 4 cm of clearance for a 185 cm sleeper. Queen and king mattresses are about 202 cm. In South Africa, where standard beds are 188 cm long, the 200 cm XL length is recommended for anyone over 183 cm.
- Sleeves. The European clothing standard EN 13402 associates body heights of 184 and 188 cm with arm lengths of 67 and 68 cm for men's shirts. A 185 cm man falls at the start of that range, so "long" sleeve options are often worth trying.
Measuring accurately at 185 cm
Small errors matter less at 185 cm than near a rounding boundary, because the 6′1″ label covers a 2.5 cm window. Still, if you want an accurate figure, measure barefoot against a flat wall with heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and head touching it, look straight ahead, and use a hard object to mark the top of your head. Morning readings are higher than evening ones because the spine compresses through the day; a 2011 study in Clinical Biomechanics measured an average trough-to-peak change of about 17.6 mm in healthy adults.
