188 cm compared with average heights
To scale against the average US adult man (175.1 cm, 5′9″) and woman (161.2 cm, 5′3″), measured in NHANES 2021–2023.
For a man
>95thpercentile
188 cm is above the 95th percentile for US men: taller than about 95% of US adult men. It is 12.9 cm (5.1 in) taller than the average US man (175.1 cm).
For a woman
>95thpercentile
188 cm is above the 95th percentile for US women: taller than about 95% of US adult women. It is 26.8 cm (10.6 in) taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm). An average woman standing alongside would reach about their chin.
Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

188 cm and 6′2″ are the same height
188 cm converts to 6 feet 2.02 inches. Dividing by 2.54 gives 74.02 inches; six feet account for 72 of them, leaving 2.02 inches. The inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters since 1959, NIST explains, so this is an exact result.
A true 6′2″ is 187.96 cm. That is 0.04 cm, or less than half a millimeter, below 188 cm. Very few heights line up so neatly across the two systems. For every practical purpose, a person who is 188 cm tall is 6′2″, and vice versa.
| Format | 188 cm |
|---|---|
| Feet and inches | 6′ 2.02″ |
| Nearest inch | 6′2″ |
| Total inches | 74.02 in |
| Decimal feet | 6.17 ft |
| Meters | 1.88 m |

Because the match is so close, 188 cm also shows how wide the "6′2″" label really is: anything from 186.69 cm to 189.23 cm rounds to it. A 187 cm man and a 189 cm man can both honestly call themselves six foot two. That is worth remembering when comparing listings: two people described as 6′2″ may differ by more than two centimeters, which is enough to be visible when they stand side by side.
The top 5 percent of American men
The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) measured 2,690 men aged 20 and over between August 2021 and August 2023. Its published 95th percentile was 187.2 cm (73.7 inches). At 188 cm, a man is just above that line: roughly 19 in 20 American men are shorter.
| US men, age group | 95th percentile | 188 cm is |
|---|---|---|
| 20 and over | 187.2 cm | above 95th |
| 20–29 | 188.1 cm | ~95th |
| 30–39 | 187.1 cm | above 95th |
| 40–49 | 189.9 cm | ~92nd |
| 50–59 | 185.6 cm | above 95th |
| 60–69 | 186.6 cm | above 95th |
| 70–79 | 184.1 cm | above 95th |
The only age group in which 188 cm falls below the 95th percentile is men in their forties, whose distribution was the tallest in this survey. Because NHANES does not publish percentiles above the 95th, a precise ranking for 188 cm in the older groups is not possible from these tables, only that it lies beyond the top 5 percent. The height percentile calculator uses these same published values.
For women, 188 cm is about 27 cm (10.5 inches) above the NHANES female mean of 161.2 cm and more than 15 cm above the female 95th percentile of 172.5 cm.
Far above any national average
NCD-RisC's global estimates for adults born in 1996 put the tallest national male average, the Netherlands, at 182.5 cm. A 188 cm man is about 5.5 cm taller than the average Dutch man and roughly 11 cm taller than the average American man born the same year (177.1 cm). NCD-RisC also found the shortest men, in Timor-Leste, Yemen and Laos, at about 160 cm, so 188 cm is nearly 28 cm above the shortest national averages.
The 6′2″ point guard
In the NBA, 6′2″ is a classic point guard height, and two of the most influential guards of the past two decades share it. NBA.com lists:
| Player | NBA listed height | Listed weight | Draft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stephen Curry | 6′2″ (1.88 m) | 205 lb (93 kg) | 2009, 1st round, 7th pick |
| Kyrie Irving | 6′2″ (1.88 m) | 195 lb (88 kg) | 2011, 1st round, 1st pick |
| Derrick Rose | 6′3″ (1.91 m) | 200 lb (91 kg) | 2008, 1st round, 1st pick |
These listings carry more weight than older NBA heights. As CBS Sports reported in 2019, citing The New York Times, the league told teams that year to submit exact player heights within the first week of training camp, measured with shoes off. Before then, listings were controlled by teams and players and were often rounded up or down by preference.
At 188 cm, Curry is taller than about 95 percent of American men, yet he is not even the tallest guard among his contemporaries: NBA.com lists Anthony Edwards and Russell Westbrook, both guards, at 6′4″ (1.93 m), and Derrick Rose at 6′3″. Allen Iverson and Chris Paul, at a listed 6′0″, show the lower end of the range. Both Curry and Irving have pages on this site: Stephen Curry's height and Kyrie Irving's height.
Presidents around 6′2″
American presidential history has a cluster of leaders at or near this height. A compilation of presidential heights drawn from historical records and biographies lists:
| President | Listed height |
|---|---|
| Thomas Jefferson | 6′2½″ (189 cm) |
| Bill Clinton | 6′2½″ (189 cm) |
| Chester A. Arthur | 6′2″ (188 cm) |
| Franklin D. Roosevelt | 6′2″ (188 cm) |
| George H. W. Bush | 6′2″ (188 cm) |
| George Washington | 6′1½″ (187 cm) |
| Barack Obama | 6′1½″ (187 cm) |
George Washington deserves a note. This site lists him at 188 cm (6′2″), the figure most often quoted, but he was never measured in the modern sense. The compilation above uses 6′1½″ (187 cm) and says various sources put his height anywhere between 6 ft and 6 ft 3.5 in. It also records that Washington once mentioned his own height as 6 ft. Any single number for him is therefore an estimate. His page, George Washington's height, sets out the range.
The same compilation notes that Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1918 passport gave his height as 6′½″ (184 cm), another example of how presidential heights shift between documents.
Famous people at 188 cm
Apart from athletes and presidents, 188 cm is a common listing among actors and business figures. In the site's database, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ryan Reynolds and Elon Musk are all listed at 188 cm. Maria Sharapova's WTA profile gives 6′2″ (1.88 m), which places her beyond the 95th percentile not only for American women but for American men as well.
In fiction, Captain America and Batman are both given as 6′2″ (188 cm) in official Marvel and DC data, and Loid Forger from Spy × Family is listed at 187 cm. Captain America's page, Steve Rogers' height, compares him with the rest of the Avengers.
Growing up to 188 cm
On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age growth chart, the reference US pediatricians use for ages 2 to 20, 188 cm is very tall at every age. Calculated from the chart's LMS parameters:
| Boy's age | Median height | 188 cm percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 15 years | 170.1 cm | ~99th |
| 16 years | 173.6 cm | ~98th |
| 18 years | 176.2 cm | ~95th |
| 20 years | 176.8 cm | ~94th |
A 15-year-old at 188 cm is taller than about 99 in 100 boys his age on the reference curve, and even at 20, the height remains in roughly the top 6 percent. Growth charts describe a reference population, not a target or a diagnosis. Any questions about an individual child's growth are best taken to a pediatrician.
Beds, sleeves and doors at 188 cm
At 6′2″, the furniture world starts to push back.
- Beds. Standard North American twin and full mattresses are about 189 cm (74.5 inches) long, which leaves about one centimeter for a 188 cm sleeper, effectively no room at all once a pillow is involved. Queen and king mattresses are about 202 cm, and a Twin XL is the same length as a queen. A survey of national bed sizes cites a rule of thumb that 210 cm beds suit people 190 cm or taller, a threshold just 2 cm above this height.
- Sleeves. The European clothing standard EN 13402 associates a body height of 188 cm with an arm length of 68 cm (range 67–68 cm) in men's shirts, three centimeters more than for 176 cm.
- Doors. Customary US doors are 78 or 80 inches high (about 198 or 203 cm), leaving 10 to 15 cm of clearance.
What a 188 cm person looks like in a crowd
Numbers become more intuitive when set against everyday reference points. Using the NHANES means and the NCD-RisC global figures:
- Against the average American man (175.1 cm), 188 cm is about 13 cm (5 inches) taller.
- Against the average American woman (161.2 cm), the gap is about 27 cm (10.5 inches).
- Against the average man worldwide (about 171 cm for men born in 1996, according to Our World in Data), the gap is about 17 cm (6.7 inches).
- Against the average Dutch man (182.5 cm), the tallest national average, it is 5.5 cm (2.2 inches).
In a typical American crowd, a 188 cm man will see over the heads of most of the people around him. In the Netherlands, he would still be tall, but far less conspicuous.
A lifetime at 188 cm
Adult height is not perfectly fixed. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging measured 2,084 men and women repeatedly over years and found that height loss begins at about age 30 and accelerates later. Men lost about 3 cm on average between ages 30 and 70, and about 5 cm by age 80. For a man who is 188 cm at 30, those averages would mean something like 185 cm at 70 and 183 cm at 80, although individuals differ a great deal. A noticeable or rapid loss of height is worth raising with a doctor.
Couples with a 188 cm partner
A 2013 PLOS ONE study by Gert Stulp and colleagues, which examined 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, found that men were taller than their partners in 92.5% of couples. It also found that couples where the man was 25 cm or more taller were slightly less common than random pairing would predict, 13.9% against 15.7%.
For a 188 cm man, the 25 cm mark corresponds to a partner of 163 cm, which is slightly above the average American woman (161.2 cm). So a 188 cm man with an average-height partner is already in the range the study's couples slightly avoided. The researchers emphasize that these preferences show up in real couples only modestly. To see a 188 cm person next to a partner of any height, use the height difference calculator.
Measuring 188 cm accurately
With the 6′2″ label covering 186.69 to 189.23 cm, a few millimeters of error will not change your imperial height. For a precise reading, measure barefoot in the morning against a flat wall, with heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and the back of your head touching it, and use a hard object, not a loose tape, to mark the top of the head. Take two or three readings and average them. Time of day matters too: a 2011 study in Clinical Biomechanics that measured volunteers 24 times across a day found an average trough-to-peak change in stature of about 17.6 mm, with the biggest drop in the first hour after getting up. A 188 cm morning reading can easily become 186.5 cm by evening. For the next heights up and down, see 185 cm and 190 cm.
