180 cm in feet: 5′10.9″, not quite 5′11″, and well short of 6 feet
180 cm is 5 feet 10.87 inches. The calculation: 180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 inches, and 70.87 − 60 = 10.87 inches left over after five feet. The conversion factor is exact; NIST records that the inch has been defined as 25.4 millimeters since July 1, 1959, after English-speaking nations agreed to unify their units of length.
Rounded to the nearest inch, 180 cm becomes 5′11″. A true 5′11″ is 180.34 cm, so the rounding adds only a third of a centimeter. What 180 cm is not is six feet. Six feet works out to 182.88 cm, and a 180 cm person is almost 3 cm (1.1 inches) short of it.

The 5′11″ label actually covers a range of metric heights. Anything from 70.5 to 71.5 inches rounds to 5′11″, which is 179.07 cm to 181.61 cm. So 179, 180 and 181 cm all share the same imperial description, and only at 182 cm (71.65 inches) does the rounded figure tip over to 6′0″.
The confusion is understandable. In metric countries, 180 cm is a round number that people treat as the line where "tall" begins, much as six feet is in the United States and the UK. The two thresholds feel equivalent, but they sit an inch apart. If you need the six-foot mark in centimeters, 183 cm is the first whole-centimeter height that clears it.
How 180 cm ranks among American men and women
The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) measured US adults with a stadiometer between August 2021 and August 2023. Against those results, 180 cm sits at roughly the 74th percentile for men aged 20 and over: about three in four adult American men are shorter. The NHANES 75th percentile for men is 180.1 cm, essentially the same figure.
| US men, age group | 75th percentile | 90th percentile | 180 cm is about |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 and over | 180.1 cm | 184.8 cm | 74th percentile |
| 20–29 | 181.0 cm | 185.9 cm | 70th |
| 40–49 | 182.6 cm | 186.8 cm | 65th |
| 60–69 | 179.8 cm | 184.1 cm | 76th |
| 70–79 | 176.9 cm | 181.6 cm | 86th |
| 80 and older | 175.0 cm | 179.3 cm | above 90th |
For women, 180 cm is rare. The NHANES 95th percentile for women aged 20 and over is 172.5 cm, and the highest age-specific value, for women in their twenties, is 174.6 cm. A 180 cm woman stands about 19 cm above the average American woman (161.2 cm) and roughly 5 cm above the average American man.
180 cm: the average man of much of Europe
In the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's estimates for adults born in 1996, a whole belt of European countries has a male average within a centimeter of 180 cm:
| Country | Men born 1996 | Women born 1996 |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | 179.9 cm | 165.9 cm |
| France | 179.7 cm | 164.9 cm |
| Norway | 179.7 cm | 165.6 cm |
| Sweden | 179.7 cm | 165.7 cm |
| Czechia | 180.1 cm | 168.5 cm |
| Iceland | 180.5 cm | 165.9 cm |
| Serbia | 180.6 cm | 167.7 cm |
| Croatia | 180.8 cm | 165.6 cm |
The routes to 180 cm were very different. Swedish and Norwegian men were already among the tallest in the world a century earlier. NCD-RisC notes that men born in 1896 in Sweden, Norway and the United States had passed 171 cm. Croatian men born in 1896, by contrast, averaged 168.1 cm and gained more than 12 cm by the 1996 cohort. NCD-RisC highlights large gains in Southern and Central Europe, naming Serbia and Poland among them.
Germany shows the typical Western European arc: 167.2 cm for men born in 1896, 177.1 cm for those born in 1956 and 179.9 cm for those born in 1996, with growth slowing in the most recent decades. Our World in Data, which publishes the same NCD-RisC series, notes that male heights in Europe and Central Asia have stagnated in recent decades.
The tallest populations are taller still. NCD-RisC finds men born in 1996 averaging more than 181 cm in the Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia and Denmark, with Dutch men at 182.5 cm. A 180 cm man is therefore average in Berlin or Paris but about 2.5 cm below average in Amsterdam.
A 180 cm woman: taller than the average man almost everywhere
Because 180 cm is so far above typical female heights, it is worth looking at separately. NCD-RisC finds that the tallest women in the world, those born in 1996 in Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and the Czech Republic, average more than 168 cm; Latvia tops the list at 169.8 cm. Even there, a 180 cm woman would be about 10 cm above her peers.
The more striking comparison is with men. Among the NCD-RisC estimates for men born in 1996, the averages for the United States (177.1 cm), the United Kingdom (177.5 cm), Brazil (173.6 cm), China (171.8 cm) and Japan (170.8 cm) are all below 180 cm. A woman of 180 cm is taller than the average man in each of those countries, and Our World in Data puts the global male average at about 171 cm, a full 9 cm shorter. Only in a small group of countries, led by the Netherlands at 182.5 cm, does the average man stand taller than she does.
In practical terms, a 180 cm woman will often be the tallest person in a mixed group, and in most countries she will look level with, or down at, a man of average height.
Couples where one partner is 180 cm
A 2013 PLOS ONE study by Gert Stulp and colleagues, which analyzed 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, gives a useful frame for partners of different heights. The man was taller than the woman in 92.5% of couples, somewhat more often than the 89.8% expected if people paired up at random. The researchers also found that couples where the man was 25 cm or more taller occurred slightly less often than chance would predict (13.9% versus 15.7%).
For a 180 cm man, that 25 cm threshold corresponds to a partner of 155 cm or shorter. For a 180 cm woman, the male-taller pattern means a partner of above 180 cm, which, according to the NHANES percentiles above, describes only about a quarter of American men. The study's authors stress that these preferences show up in real couples only modestly, so the numbers describe tendencies, not rules.
Under the Mercury limit
One of the more unusual facts about 180 cm involves the space program. NASA's account of its astronaut requirements explains that the first astronauts, chosen in 1959, were military jet pilots with engineering backgrounds who also had to be shorter than 5 feet 11 inches to fit inside the Mercury spacecraft. Five feet 11 inches is 180.34 cm, so a 180 cm candidate would have squeezed under the limit with a third of a centimeter to spare. 185 cm or even 181 cm would have been ruled out.
That cap reflected the cramped capsule of the time rather than any view about the ideal astronaut. NASA notes that in 1964 it began recruiting scientists as well as pilots, and its requirements have since been rewritten around education, experience and medical fitness.
Presidents, politics and 180 cm
Height also features in a long-running debate about elections. Wikipedia's compilation of US presidential heights, which cites historical records and biographies, gives the average height of the presidents as approximately 5′11″ (180 cm). The same article lists the tallest president as Abraham Lincoln at 6′4″ (193 cm) and the shortest as James Madison at 5′4″ (163 cm). On that measure, a 180 cm man would be almost exactly at the presidential average, which is itself well above the average for American men in most of the eras those presidents lived in.
Clothing, beds and everyday fit at 180 cm
Height drives a few practical decisions.
- Sleeves. The European clothing standard EN 13402 includes a table linking body height to arm length for men's shirts. For 180 cm it gives an arm length of 66 cm (range 65–66 cm), a centimeter more than for 176 cm.
- Beds. Many European single beds are 190 or 200 cm long. In France, according to a survey of national bed sizes, single beds are usually 90 × 190 cm or 90 × 200 cm, and Italian singles are commonly 80 or 90 × 190 cm. North American twin and full mattresses are about 189 cm long, while queen and king are about 202 cm. At 180 cm you fit all of them, though with only around 10 cm to spare on the shorter lengths.
- Growth charts. On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age reference, 180 cm is about the 67th percentile for a 20-year-old man and about the 90th for a 15-year-old boy. A teenager at 180 cm may simply be an early developer whose peers will close the gap.
Famous people at 180 cm
A good number of high-profile people are listed at 180 cm, and the list skews toward tall women, since 180 cm is so far above the female average.
- Taylor Swift: Billboard's artist page says she "stands at a height of 5'11"". This site uses 180 cm while noting that she is also widely reported at 5′10″ (178 cm); see Taylor Swift's height page.
- Nicole Kidman and Kendall Jenner are both listed at 180 cm in the site's database. See Kendall Jenner's height for side-by-side comparisons.
- Brad Pitt is listed at 180 cm, which makes him about the 74th percentile for American men.
Among fictional characters, Sanji from One Piece, Han Solo from Star Wars, and Suguru Geto and Yuta Okkotsu from Jujutsu Kaisen are all given as 180 cm in official character data. Han Solo's listing is easy to explore on his height page, which places him next to the rest of the original trilogy cast.
Getting a reliable 180 cm reading
Whether you are 179, 180 or 181 cm can change how you describe yourself, especially in metric countries where 180 is a psychological line. A few points help:
- Measure barefoot against a flat wall, with heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and the back of your head touching it, and your gaze level.
- Measure in the morning. A study in Clinical Biomechanics recorded an average daily stature change of about 17.6 mm in healthy adults, with most of the loss in the first hour after waking. A person who is 180.5 cm at breakfast may be 179 cm at night.
- Average two or three readings. One sloppy reading can easily be off by a centimeter.
To see 180 cm against another person, a celebrity or a fictional character, the height difference calculator draws both figures to scale and reports the gap in both units.
