193 cm is 6 foot 4
193 cm converts to 6 feet 3.98 inches, which rounds to 6′4″. The arithmetic: 193 ÷ 2.54 = 75.98 inches; subtract 72 inches for six feet and 3.98 inches remain. Because NIST defines the inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters, a true 6′4″ is 193.04 cm, just 0.4 millimeters more than 193 cm. Like 188 cm and 6′2″, this is one of the rare pairs where a whole number of centimeters and a whole number of inches line up almost perfectly.

The 6′4″ label covers everything from 191.77 cm to 194.31 cm. So 192, 193 and 194 cm are all "six foot four" once rounded, and listings that differ by a centimeter, such as 193 versus 194 cm for the same athlete, usually reflect rounding rather than a real disagreement.
Far beyond the 95th percentile
The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) measured 2,690 American men aged 20 and over between August 2021 and August 2023. Its highest published percentile, the 95th, is 187.2 cm. At 193 cm, a man is almost 6 cm above that line. Even in the survey's tallest age group, men aged 40 to 49, the 95th percentile is 189.9 cm, still 3 cm short of 193.
In inches, the NHANES report gives the male 95th percentile as 73.7 inches, so a 76-inch man stands more than two inches above it, a gap that is easy to see when the two stand side by side.
NHANES does not publish percentiles above the 95th, so the tables cannot say exactly how rare 193 cm is, only that it is well outside the top 5 percent in every age group. Compared with the averages, 193 cm is about 18 cm (7 inches) taller than the typical American man (175.1 cm) and almost 32 cm (12.5 inches) taller than the typical American woman (161.2 cm).
The global picture is similar. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) estimates that Dutch men born in 1996, the world's tallest national group, average 182.5 cm. A 193 cm man is more than 10 cm above that. The Wikipedia overview of human height cites a 1953–54 study of the Nilotic peoples of South Sudan, described as among the tallest in the world, in which Shilluk men averaged 182 cm and Dinka Ruweng men 181 cm. Again, 193 cm is more than 10 cm above both.
Abraham Lincoln and the presidency
193 cm is best known in American history as the height of Abraham Lincoln, the tallest US president. A compilation of presidential heights built from historical records lists him at 6′4″ (193 cm), with Lyndon B. Johnson second at 6′3½″ (192 cm) and the average president at about 5′11″ (180 cm).
The most specific account of Lincoln's height comes from the portrait painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter. According to the compilation, Carpenter recorded that Lincoln stood beside his canvas while the painter marked his exact height, and that the result was six feet three and three-quarter inches "in his stocking-feet." That works out to about 192.4 cm, just over half a centimeter below the 193 cm usually quoted. Either way, Lincoln was more than 13 cm taller than the presidential average.
| President or candidate | Listed height |
|---|---|
| Winfield Scott (candidate, 1852) | 6′5″ (196 cm) |
| Abraham Lincoln | 6′4″ (193 cm) |
| Lyndon B. Johnson | 6′3½″ (192 cm) |
| Donald Trump | 6′3″ (191 cm) |
| Thomas Jefferson | 6′2½″ (189 cm) |
| Average of all presidents | about 5′11″ (180 cm) |
Lincoln's height made for some of the most lopsided matchups in election history. The compilation's election-by-election table shows that in 1860 he stood about 30 cm taller than Stephen A. Douglas (5′4″, 163 cm) and about 5 cm taller than John C. Breckinridge (6′2″, 188 cm). In 1864 his opponent, George B. McClellan, was listed at 5′8″ (173 cm), a 20 cm gap. A century later, Lyndon B. Johnson faced Barry Goldwater (5′11″, 180 cm) in 1964 with an 11 cm advantage.
The compilation notes that some observers believe the taller of the two major-party candidates tends to prevail. But it also records the tallest unsuccessful candidate of all: Winfield Scott, at 6′5″ (196 cm), who lost the 1852 election to Franklin Pierce. Height may be an advantage in politics, but it has never been a guarantee.
Athletes listed at 6′4″
In professional sport, 193 cm shows up in very different roles. Official listings include two NBA guards and an NFL pass rusher:
| Athlete | Sport | Listed height | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthony Edwards | NBA | 6′4″ (1.93 m) | 225 lb (102 kg) |
| Russell Westbrook | NBA | 6′4″ (1.93 m) | 200 lb (91 kg) |
| Nick Bosa | NFL | 6-4 | 266 lb |
NBA.com records Edwards as the first pick of the 2020 draft and Westbrook as the fourth pick of 2008. NFL.com lists Bosa as a San Francisco 49ers defensive end with 33-inch arms and hands of 10¾ inches. The weights tell the story of the different sports: at the same height, Bosa carries roughly 40 kg more than Westbrook. Their pages, Anthony Edwards' height and Nick Bosa's height, compare them with other players.
This site lists Westbrook at 193 cm, the 1.93 m on his NBA page; some references round him to 194 cm, which is still within a normal 6′4″ listing. Actor Ben Affleck, listed at 192 cm, also falls in the 6′4″ window; see Ben Affleck's height.
Living at 193 cm: beds, doors and sleeves
At 6′4″, everyday dimensions start to fall short of the body.
Beds
A survey of international bed sizes cites a rule of thumb that people 190 cm or taller may want 210 cm long beds. At 193 cm, that applies squarely. Most standard mattresses are shorter:
| Bed | Length | Room for a 193 cm sleeper |
|---|---|---|
| North American twin or full | 189 cm | −4 cm |
| European single (90 × 190) | 190 cm | −3 cm |
| European single or double (200 cm long) | 200 cm | +7 cm |
| North American twin XL, queen, king | 202 cm | +9 cm |
| North American California king | 212 cm | +19 cm |
A standard North American twin is actually 4 cm shorter than a 193 cm person, and even the common 200 cm European length leaves only 7 cm for a pillow and pointed toes. The California king is the only common North American size that meets the 210 cm guideline.
Doors
Customary US interior door heights are 78 or 80 inches (about 198 or 203 cm), leaving just 5 to 10 cm of clearance at 193 cm. In Germany, the DIN 18101 standard sets a common interior door panel height of 1,985 mm, which leaves about 5.5 cm. Door frames are usually fine, but low beams, sloping attic ceilings and some stairwells are not.
Sleeves
The European clothing standard EN 13402 associates body heights with arm lengths for men's shirts, from 60 cm at 156 cm up to 71 cm at 200 cm. At 192 cm the table gives 69 cm and at 196 cm, 70 cm. A 193 cm person needs a sleeve about 4 cm longer than someone of 176 cm, and men's shirts are labeled primarily by chest girth, so finding the right sleeve length often takes some searching.
Height limits that 193 cm exceeds
Some historical equipment simply could not take people this tall. NASA explains that its first astronauts, selected in 1959, had to be shorter than 5′11″ (180.34 cm) to fit inside the Mercury spacecraft. A 193 cm candidate would have been nearly 13 cm over the limit. NASA notes that it later broadened selection to scientists from 1964 and that its modern requirements center on education, experience and fitness.
Growing up to 193 cm
On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age growth chart, the reference used by US pediatricians, 193 cm is at the very top of the curve. Calculated from the chart's published LMS parameters, it sits at about the 99th percentile at ages 18 and 20, and higher still at younger ages. The median boy reaches only about 176.8 cm by age 20, so 193 cm is about 16 cm above the median.
The Wikipedia overview of human height notes that many individuals more than two standard deviations from the population mean are considered natural variants, and that when inheritance is the cause, the term used is familial tall stature. Growth charts describe a population and cannot diagnose anything; any concern about a child's growth, whether fast or slow, should be discussed with a pediatrician.
Couples with a 193 cm partner
Gert Stulp and colleagues analyzed 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study in a 2013 PLOS ONE paper. Men were taller than their partners in 92.5% of couples, and couples where the man was 25 cm or more taller occurred slightly less often than chance predicts, 13.9% against 15.7%.
For a 193 cm man, that 25 cm mark falls at a partner height of 168 cm. Using NHANES percentiles, that is roughly the 85th percentile for American women, so the large majority of women would be more than 25 cm shorter. The authors emphasize that height preferences affect actual pairings only modestly. To see what such a difference looks like, the height difference calculator draws both partners to scale.
Measuring at 193 cm
Measuring very tall people at home has its own pitfalls: a tape that bends, a mark made at an angle, or a reading taken looking up at the wall. Use a steel tape, have someone else make the mark with a hardback book pressed flat to the wall and level on your head, and stand barefoot with heels, buttocks, shoulder blades and the back of the head touching the wall. Measure in the morning, when the spine is longest. A 2011 study in Clinical Biomechanics that measured volunteers 24 times over a day found an average trough-to-peak change of about 17.6 mm, most of it in the first hour after waking, so a 193 cm morning reading may be nearer 191 cm by bedtime.
Height also changes over decades. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, which measured 2,084 adults repeatedly, found that men lose about 3 cm on average between 30 and 70 and about 5 cm by 80. A man who is 6′4″ at 30 may well be closer to 6′2″ in his eighties, which is worth remembering when comparing historical figures measured late in life with athletes measured in their twenties.
For the next heights down with their own pages, see 190 cm and 188 cm, which matches 6′2″ almost exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Is 193 cm exactly 6 foot 4?
Almost exactly. 6′4″ is 193.04 cm, so 193 cm is 0.04 cm (less than half a millimeter) short of it. In everyday terms the two are the same height.
How rare is 193 cm for a man?
Very rare. It is nearly 6 cm above the CDC NHANES 2021–2023 95th percentile for US men aged 20 and over (187.2 cm), so far fewer than 5 percent of American men reach it.
Was Abraham Lincoln 193 cm tall?
Close to it. He is usually listed at 6′4″ (193 cm), the tallest US president. The portrait painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter, who marked Lincoln's height on a canvas, recorded six feet three and three-quarter inches in his stocking feet, about 192.4 cm.
