Trafalgar Law's official height: 191 cm

Trafalgar D. Water Law, the captain of the Heart Pirates known as the Surgeon of Death, is listed at 191 cm (6′3″) after One Piece's two-year timeskip. Eiichiro Oda gave the figure in the SBS question corner of Volume 68 (page 82, per the One Piece Wiki's citation), the volume that covers the Punk Hazard arc, where Law and Monkey D. Luffy form their pirate alliance. Converted precisely, 191 cm is 75.2 inches, or 6 feet 3.2 inches.

This site uses that post-timeskip number because it describes Law in the part of the story where he plays his biggest role: Punk Hazard, Dressrosa and Wano. Law first appears before the timeskip, among the rookie pirates gathered at the Sabaody Archipelago, but his story weight, and most of the questions fans ask about his size, belongs to the New World saga.

A tall captain among the Worst Generation

Law is introduced as one of the eleven rookies with bounties over 100 million berries who reach the Sabaody Archipelago at roughly the same time. The English Wikipedia character list notes they were first called the Eleven Supernovas and later labeled the Worst Generation by the World Government, a group the authorities considered problem children. Luffy and Zoro are among them, and so is Law.

Height in that group varies widely, from human-sized fighters to much larger figures, and Law sits toward the tall end of the humans. He is 17 cm taller than Luffy and 10 cm taller than Zoro, which is part of why he looks so composed and imposing in the Sabaody auction-house scene where the three first share a room.

Law next to the Straw Hats

Law spends more time with the Straw Hats than almost any non-member, so the most useful comparison is with Luffy's crew. The table uses post-timeskip heights recorded on this site.

Law and Luffy

The alliance between Monkey D. Luffy and Law is the backbone of the series from Punk Hazard to the end of Wano. At 174 cm, Luffy is 17 cm shorter, close to the gap between an average Japanese man and a very tall one. The pairing works partly because of the contrast: Law is tall, controlled and always planning; Luffy is shorter, cheerful and impulsive. The English Wikipedia list notes that Law proposed the alliance as a way to take down the Emperor Kaido, while privately hunting Donquixote Doflamingo, and their scenes together repeatedly play Law's exasperation against Luffy's indifference to plans.

Law and Zoro

Roronoa Zoro is the Straw Hat who most often fights alongside Law. Both are swordsmen: Zoro uses three katana, Law a single long nodachi called Kikoku. Zoro is 181 cm, so Law has 10 cm on him. In the Wano finale, the two are among the fighters who take on Kaido and Big Mom on the roof of Onigashima, and the visual pairing of a tall, lean swordsman and a shorter, broader one is part of what makes their team-ups memorable.

Law and Nico Robin

Nami stands 21 cm below Law, while Nico Robin, at 188 cm, is the Straw Hat closest to him in height. Robin and Law are both calm, analytical characters, and with only 3 cm between them they are the most evenly matched pair when Law is drawn with the crew.

Law among Warlords, Emperors and rivals

Law also held the title of Warlord of the Sea for a time, and several of the most powerful figures he deals with are tracked on this site.

Big Mom 880 cm +689 cm Emperor fought on Onigashima

Law and Boa Hancock: an exact match

Boa Hancock is listed at 191 cm, the same as Law. Both were Warlords of the Sea, and both played a part in saving Luffy around the Marineford war: Hancock helped him get into Impel Down and the battlefield, while Law arrived in his submarine to carry the wounded Luffy away and perform emergency surgery. Their identical heights are a neat coincidence for two characters who share that turning point.

Law and Ace

Portgas D. Ace was 185 cm when he died at Marineford, 6 cm shorter than Law. The two never had a meaningful scene together, but Law's rescue of Luffy happened in the immediate aftermath of Ace's death, linking them in the story's chronology.

Law and the Emperors

At the far end of the scale, Kaido is 710 cm and Big Mom 880 cm, so Law is less than a quarter of Big Mom's height. Law's Ope Ope no Mi, which the Wikipedia list describes as creating a spherical "Room" in which he can cut, move and swap objects and even bodies, is one reason he can engage opponents of that size. His power works on anything inside the Room regardless of how big it is, which is why height matters so little in his fights. The same logic applies to his teleport-style swaps: he can exchange positions with an object or person of any size inside the Room, so a 191 cm surgeon can reposition an opponent many times his height. In a franchise where reach and bulk often look decisive, Law is one of the clearest cases of technique outweighing stature.

The Donquixote family: Law's past among giants

Law's backstory, revealed during the Dressrosa arc, is one of the most important in the series, and it is full of people much taller than him. As a boy, Law survived the destruction of his home country, Flevance, and joined the Donquixote Pirates, led by Donquixote Doflamingo. Oda's SBS lists Doflamingo at 305 cm (Volume 58), and his younger brother Donquixote Rosinante, the officer known as Corazon who later saved Law's life, at 293 cm (Volume 79). Neither figure is part of this site's character dataset. They come from different volumes than Law's own number, but from the same question-corner format. The One Piece Wiki also notes that the Vivre Card databook printed Rosinante's height as 435 cm, which the wiki treats as an error.

Those heights explain a lot about how the flashback is drawn. Young Law is a child surrounded by adults who are around three meters tall, and Corazon, the man who took him from hospital to hospital in search of a cure for his illness, is drawn as a towering, clumsy figure in a feathered coat. Even as an adult, Law remains more than a meter shorter than Doflamingo. When the two finally face each other in Dressrosa, Law is a 191 cm man fighting a 305 cm Warlord, a gap of 114 cm that the art makes impossible to miss.

The size difference also gives Law's central motivation a visual form. For years after Corazon's death, Law plans revenge against a man who is physically enormous, politically protected and surrounded by a loyal crew. That he ultimately helps bring Doflamingo down alongside Luffy, rather than through strength or size, fits the series' recurring theme that height and power are not the same thing.

How Law's height shapes his design

Oda draws Law as tall and slender, with a long stride, a spotted fur hat, a hoodie or long coat and tattoos across his hands and arms. His most recognizable prop, the nodachi Kikoku, is a long sword he usually carries over his shoulder or propped upright beside him. A long blade suits a tall character: on a shorter figure it would look awkward, while at 191 cm Law carries it naturally. The One Piece Wiki describes Kikoku as about as tall as Law himself; Oda has not published an exact length, so centimeter figures quoted online are estimates from artwork.

The English Wikipedia list notes that Law's name draws on the real pirate Edward Low and on the battles of Trafalgar and Waterloo, a mix of pirate history and naval history that suits a character drawn as a tall, deliberate strategist.

His crew adds visual contrast. The Heart Pirates include Bepo, a polar bear mink, and crew members Shachi, Penguin and Jean Bart, the last a former captain who joined Law after being freed from slavery at Sabaody. Next to Bepo and Jean Bart, both large, Law looks slim rather than tall; next to the Straw Hats' human members, he towers.

Popularity and voice performers

Law is among the most popular characters in One Piece. The English Wikipedia article on Zoro notes that Zoro placed third in the fifth Shōnen Jump popularity poll, behind Law, one of the few times anyone other than Luffy outranked Zoro. With a series that has more than 600 million copies in circulation worldwide, Law's height, and whether he is taller than Zoro or Sanji, is one of the most searched One Piece questions.

He is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya in Japanese and Matthew Mercer in the Funimation English dub. As with any adaptation, voice actors' and future live-action actors' heights are not canon measurements.

What 191 cm means in the real world

Law would be tall in almost any country. This site's Japan average height page, built from NCD Risk Factor Collaboration data, puts Japanese men born in 1996 at about 170.8 cm, so Law is roughly 20 cm above the national average. Our World in Data's summary of the same research puts the global average for men born in 1996 at about 171 cm. Even in the Netherlands, the tallest country in the site's data, average men of that generation are about 182.5 cm, almost 9 cm shorter than Law.

Real people near Law's height on this site:

  • Derrick Rose, listed at 191 cm, exactly Law's height.
  • Hugh Jackman and Donald Trump, listed at 190.5 cm.
  • Ben Affleck, listed at 192 cm, 1 cm taller.

The height comparison tool draws Law beside Luffy, Zoro or any of these people to scale, and the height difference calculator converts any gap into centimeters and feet and inches. For the rest of the Worst Generation, Warlords and Emperors, see the One Piece character hub.
