Real people the same height as Shanks

Shanks's official height: 199 cm

Shanks, the red-haired Emperor whose straw hat set Monkey D. Luffy on his path in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, is listed at 199 cm (6′6″). This site cites the figure to the One Piece Vivre Card databook, the card-based character encyclopedia Shueisha began publishing in 2018. The Japanese Wikipedia entry on the Red Hair Pirates gives the same 199 cm, alongside an age of 39 (37 before the two-year timeskip) and a birthday of March 9. Converted precisely, 199 cm is 78.3 inches, or 6 feet 6.3 inches.

That height applies to Shanks as an adult in the present-day story. He does not appear to grow or change size across the timeskip, so unlike Luffy or Zoro there is no separate pre-timeskip figure to track. The databook also records a much smaller height for a young Shanks in his days as a cabin boy, which the Japanese entry gives as 132 cm, but the number that matters for comparisons with the current cast is 199 cm.

The smallest Emperor

The single most interesting fact about Shanks's height is how ordinary it is compared with the other people who have held his rank. The English Wikipedia character list names the original Four Emperors of the Sea as Shanks, Whitebeard, Kaido and Big Mom, and notes that Shanks was the newest Emperor when the story began and has since become the longest-reigning one. The other three are giants.

Emperor Height Difference vs Shanks
Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) 880 cm +681 cm
Kaido 710 cm +511 cm
Whitebeard (Edward Newgate) 666 cm +467 cm
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) 344 cm +145 cm
Shanks 199 cm —
Buggy (named Emperor late in the story) 192 cm −7 cm

Big Mom is more than four times as tall as Shanks, and Kaido more than three and a half times. Blackbeard, who rose to Emperor status after the war at Marineford, is 344 cm, about 1.7 times Shanks's height. Shanks's position among them has nothing to do with size. One Piece consistently presents his authority as coming from reputation, willpower and the respect of other powerful pirates, not physical bulk. His appearance at the end of the Marineford war, where his arrival alone is enough to halt the fighting, is one of the clearest examples in the series of a figure of normal stature commanding a battlefield of giants.

Buggy, who appears in this table because the World Government later recognizes him as an Emperor, is the only figure of that rank who is shorter than Shanks.

Shanks next to Luffy and the Straw Hats

Shanks appears in the very first chapter of One Piece, published in Weekly Shōnen Jump in July 1997. In that chapter he loses his left arm saving a young Luffy from a sea monster and then entrusts the boy with his straw hat. Almost everything about Luffy's journey refers back to that meeting.

Monkey D. Luffy is listed at 174 cm after the timeskip, so the adult Luffy would stand 25 cm below Shanks. In Chapter 1, Luffy is a seven-year-old child, and the image of the tall, one-armed pirate placing his hat on a small boy's head is the visual heart of the series. Luffy promised to return the hat once he had become a great pirate, so the 25 cm adult gap is the number fans reach for when they imagine that reunion.

Character Height Difference vs Shanks
Shanks 199 cm —
Dracule Mihawk 198 cm −1 cm
Buggy 192 cm −7 cm
Trafalgar Law 191 cm −8 cm
Portgas D. Ace 185 cm −14 cm
Roronoa Zoro 181 cm −18 cm
Sanji 180 cm −19 cm
Monkey D. Luffy 174 cm −25 cm
Nami 170 cm −29 cm

Shanks and Zoro

Roronoa Zoro is 181 cm after the timeskip, 18 cm shorter than Shanks. Both are swordsmen, and the English Wikipedia article on Zoro notes that his goal is to become the world's greatest swordsman, a title that runs through Mihawk, Shanks's old rival. A Zoro who reached that goal would still be looking up at both men.

Shanks and Ace

According to the Japanese entry on Portgas D. Ace, Ace sought Shanks out during his Spade Pirates years, after setting sail at 17, and the two became friendly through their shared connection to Luffy. Ace is listed at 185 cm, 14 cm shorter. Shanks's later attempt to warn Whitebeard about Blackbeard, out of concern for Ace, is one of his few major appearances before the timeskip.

Shanks and Mihawk: rivals of almost identical height

The rivalry between Shanks and Dracule Mihawk is one of the series' most famous backstories: the English Wikipedia character list describes Shanks as having rivaled Mihawk in their youth, before Shanks gave up his left arm in Luffy's village. On a height chart, the rivals are nearly indistinguishable. Mihawk is listed at 198 cm, just 1 cm below Shanks.

The pairing shows how Oda often sizes his top swordsmen: tall but human. Neither is a giant or a fish-man, and both rely on technique and Haki rather than reach. When they appear in the same panel, as when Mihawk visits Shanks before the Marineford war, the difference between them comes down to posture and hair.

Shanks and Buggy: two apprentices on Roger's ship

Shanks and Buggy served together as apprentices aboard Gol D. Roger's ship, and their bickering relationship has been a running thread since the East Blue saga. Buggy is listed at 192 cm in the Vivre Card databook, so Shanks has 7 cm on his old crewmate. The Japanese entry gives Buggy's age as 39, the same as Shanks's, which fits their shared history as boys on the same crew. Buggy's later rise to Emperor status alongside Shanks gives the series two former cabin boys of roughly similar height at the top of the pirate world, though only one of them earned the title by strength.

Size versus strength in Shanks's battles

One Piece is full of moments in which a smaller fighter overcomes a much larger one, and Shanks is the series' clearest example of strength that has nothing to do with height. Three episodes from the story show it:

  • Marineford. At the close of the war at Marine headquarters, Shanks arrives with his crew and calls for the fighting to stop. The battlefield includes Admirals, Whitebeard's giant-sized allies and Blackbeard, who is 145 cm taller than Shanks, and still the fighting ends.
  • The clash with the Kid Pirates. The Japanese Wikipedia entry on the Red Hair Pirates notes that Shanks defeated Eustass Kid and his partner Killer with a single strike, after Kid had earlier lost his left arm in a clash with Shanks's first mate, Benn Beckman.
  • His standing among the Emperors. Shanks has held his rank alongside Big Mom, Kaido and Whitebeard, each three to four times his height, for longer than any of them.

The pattern matters for height comparisons because it explains why fans are often surprised by his number. Shanks is spoken of in the same breath as the series' giants, so people expect a huge figure. The databook answers otherwise: 199 cm, tall for a man but nowhere near the size of the people he outranks.

Shanks across the timeline

Shanks's height has a small history of its own. As a boy, he served as an apprentice on Roger's ship alongside Buggy, and the databook figure for that period, 132 cm according to the Japanese entry, describes a child. Twelve years before the main story, he is the young captain who stays in Luffy's home village and loses his arm there. In the present day he is 37, then 39 after the timeskip, and fully grown at 199 cm. Only the adult figure applies to comparisons with the current cast.

How Shanks's height shapes his design

Oda draws Shanks as lean and loose-limbed, usually in an open shirt and a long cloak draped over his shoulders, with three scars over his left eye and red hair. At 199 cm he is among the tallest humans of ordinary proportions in the main cast, but his design never emphasizes bulk. Instead, his height gives his cloak a long, sweeping line, and his missing left arm creates an asymmetry that makes him instantly recognizable in silhouette.

That design choice reinforces his role. Shanks is a figure who usually prefers to talk rather than fight, and his presence in a scene often settles matters without a battle. A towering, muscular Shanks would read as a brawler. A tall, relaxed one with an easy smile reads as someone whose strength is held in reserve.

In Netflix's live-action series, which premiered in 2023 with a second season in 2026, Shanks is played by Peter Gadiot. As with every adaptation, the actor's own height is not a canon measurement; the databook's 199 cm remains the reference.

What 199 cm means in the real world

At 199 cm, Shanks would be tall almost anywhere on Earth. This site's Japan average height page puts Japanese men born in 1996 at about 170.8 cm, so Shanks is about 28 cm above the Japanese average. Even against the Netherlands, the tallest country in the site's data, where men born in 1996 average about 182.5 cm, he is 16.5 cm taller. Our World in Data, summarizing the same NCD Risk Factor Collaboration research, puts the global average man at about 171 cm.

His height is closer to that of an NBA guard or wing than to anyone in an ordinary crowd. On this site:

  • Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are listed at 198 cm, 1 cm shorter than Shanks.
  • Charles Barkley and Jimmy Butler are listed at 198.1 cm.
  • Devin Booker is listed at 195.6 cm, about 3 cm shorter.
  • Erling Haaland is listed at 195 cm, 4 cm shorter.

Comparing Shanks yourself

The fastest way to see how Shanks stands next to Luffy, Mihawk or a real basketball player is to drop them into the height comparison tool, which draws every figure to scale using the official numbers. For a precise gap in centimeters and inches, the height difference calculator does the arithmetic. The One Piece character hub lists every Straw Hat, Emperor and rival tracked on the site, from the 90 cm Chopper to the 880 cm Big Mom, with Shanks sitting surprisingly close to the human end of that scale.
