Real people the same height as Portgas D. Ace

Portgas D. Ace's official height: 185 cm

Portgas D. Ace, the fire-wielding second division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates and Monkey D. Luffy's sworn older brother, is listed at 185 cm (6′1″). Eiichiro Oda gave the figure in the SBS question corner of One Piece Volume 48, and the Vivre Card databook later repeated it; the Japanese Wikipedia entry on Ace cites both. Converted precisely, 185 cm is 72.8 inches, or 6 feet 0.8 inches.

Unlike Luffy, Zoro or Law, Ace has only one adult height. He died during the war at Marineford at age 20, before the two-year timeskip, so there is no post-timeskip figure to update it. The 185 cm number describes him as readers met him: a confident young captain in an orange hat, introduced during the Alabasta saga and killed at the climax of the Summit War.

The Japanese entry notes that Oda tied Ace's birthday, January 1, to the ace of a deck of cards, whose value is one. Ace's name and the spade motif of his first crew, the Spade Pirates, follow the same card theme.

Growing up: 103 cm to 185 cm

One of the few One Piece characters with a recorded childhood height, Ace is listed in the Vivre Card databook at 103 cm at age 10, during the years he spent in the mountains near Foosha Village with Luffy and Sabo. By the time he set out to sea at 17, he would have been close to his adult height, and by 20 he was 185 cm.

That 82 cm increase over a decade is a big jump, but 103 cm is a small figure for a ten-year-old. Real Japanese children of that age average about 139.5 cm according to the Ministry of Education's 2025 school health survey, so young Ace was drawn much smaller than a typical real child, a common habit in manga, where children are often given exaggerated proportions. The adult figure is the one that matters for comparisons.

Ace and Luffy: the brothers' height gap

The relationship that defines Ace is his bond with Monkey D. Luffy. The two are not related by blood: the English Wikipedia character list identifies Ace as the son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge, raised alongside Luffy under Garp's arrangements. They swore brotherhood as children together with Sabo.

At the time of Marineford, Luffy was 172 cm. Ace, at 185 cm, was 13 cm taller, almost exactly the gap between a man of average Japanese height and a tall one. When Ace first appears in Alabasta and when he and Luffy fight side by side at Marineford, the taller, older brother and the shorter, younger one are always clear in the art. After the timeskip, Luffy grew to 174 cm, which would still have left him 11 cm below Ace.

Ace's death is one of the most famous scenes in manga. The English Wikipedia list notes that in Chapter 574 he shields Luffy from the Admiral Akainu's magma fist and dies from the wound, and that he is buried on a New World island beside Whitebeard.

Ace next to the Straw Hats

Since Ace existed only in the pre-timeskip era, the fairest comparison with the Straw Hats uses their pre-timeskip heights.

Character Pre-timeskip height Difference vs Ace
Brook 266 cm +81 cm
Franky 225 cm +40 cm
Nico Robin 188 cm +3 cm
Portgas D. Ace 185 cm —
Roronoa Zoro 178 cm −7 cm
Sanji 177 cm −8 cm
Usopp 174 cm −11 cm
Monkey D. Luffy 172 cm −13 cm
Nami 169 cm −16 cm
Tony Tony Chopper 90 cm −95 cm

Roronoa Zoro, whose pre-timeskip height of 178 cm comes from the Volume 10 SBS, was 7 cm shorter than Ace. Sanji, at 177 cm before the timeskip, was 8 cm shorter. When Ace shares a table with the crew in Alabasta, he is the tallest human in the scene apart from Robin, who had not yet joined them.

Ace among Whitebeard, Blackbeard and the Emperors

Ace's adult life was spent among some of the largest characters in One Piece, and the contrast is striking.

Character Height Difference vs Ace Connection
Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) 666 cm +481 cm Captain Ace called father
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) 344 cm +159 cm Ace's subordinate turned enemy
Shanks 199 cm +14 cm Emperor Ace met in his Spade Pirates years
Buggy 192 cm +7 cm Impel Down escapee at Marineford
Trafalgar Law 191 cm +6 cm Rescued Luffy after Ace's death
Portgas D. Ace 185 cm — —

Ace and Whitebeard

Whitebeard is listed at 666 cm, more than three and a half times Ace's height. Ace joined the Whitebeard Pirates after repeatedly trying, and failing, to defeat the old Emperor, and he came to regard Whitebeard as a father. Their scenes together, with a 185 cm young man beside a figure taller than a two-story house, are among the starkest scale contrasts in the series. They also died in the same war and, according to the Wikipedia list, were buried side by side.

Ace and Blackbeard

Marshall D. Teach, listed at 344 cm, served in Ace's own second division before killing a crewmate and deserting. Ace's pursuit of Teach, against Whitebeard's wishes, led to his defeat on Banaro Island, his capture and the chain of events that ended at Marineford. Blackbeard is 159 cm taller, so the subordinate Ace hunted was almost twice his size.

Ace and Shanks

According to the Japanese entry, Ace sought out Shanks, the man who saved Luffy as a child, during his Spade Pirates years after setting sail at 17, and the two hit it off over their connection to Luffy; One Piece novel A 2 depicts the meeting in detail. Shanks is listed at 199 cm, 14 cm taller than Ace.

Comparing Ace with post-timeskip characters

Because Ace's height is frozen at 20, comparisons with the post-timeskip cast need a little care. Fans often ask how Ace would measure up against the Straw Hats today, and the answer depends on which numbers you use. Several crew members grew a few centimeters across the two-year gap: Luffy from 172 to 174 cm, Zoro from 178 to 181 cm and Sanji from 177 to 180 cm. Against those updated figures, Ace still leads all three, but the margins shrink to 11, 4 and 5 cm.

Oda has never suggested what Ace would have looked like at 22, so any "post-timeskip Ace" figure is invented. The defensible comparison is the one in the table above: Ace at 185 cm against the crew as they were when he was alive. If you compare him with today's Straw Hats in the height difference calculator, keep in mind that you are comparing a 20-year-old with characters who have had two more years to grow.

Ace's last stand, by the numbers

The war at Marineford brought together an extraordinary range of sizes, and Ace stood near the human end of it. On the execution platform he was flanked by Marine leadership; below him, Whitebeard, at 666 cm, led his allied crews, while Luffy, at 172 cm, fought his way across the plaza. Blackbeard arrived later, 344 cm tall, and Shanks ended the war at 199 cm. Ace, at 185 cm, was taller than the brother trying to save him and dwarfed by the father figure who died for him.

That spread is why many fans use Ace as a reference point when they build One Piece height charts. He is a human-sized character with an exact, unrevised figure, he interacted with nearly every major force in the first half of the story, and his height sits almost exactly at the middle of the human cast: taller than Luffy, Zoro and Sanji, shorter than Law, Buggy, Mihawk and Shanks.

Manga, anime and novel

The Toei anime, which began on Fuji Television in 1999, follows the manga's proportions for Ace, and no anime guidebook has published a different height. Ace also stars in a spin-off novel series, One Piece novel A, which covers his years with the Spade Pirates before he joined Whitebeard. The novels add story detail rather than statistics, so the SBS and Vivre Card figure of 185 cm remains the only official height.

How Ace's height fits his design

Oda draws Ace as tall, lean and athletic, usually shirtless with an orange cowboy hat, a bead necklace and the Whitebeard Pirates' jolly roger tattooed on his back. His Devil Fruit, the Logia-type Mera Mera no Mi, lets him create, control and become fire, and his fighting style is fluid and long-limbed. At 185 cm, he looks like the older brother in every sense: taller, more composed and more experienced than Luffy.

Freckles and a relaxed smile soften the look, and the character's famous habit of falling asleep mid-meal adds comedy. None of this changes his height, but it makes him an appealing contrast with the enormous captains he deals with. Ace is one of the clearest examples in One Piece of a character whose presence comes from charisma rather than size.

Live action and voice performers

In Japanese, Ace is voiced by Toshio Furukawa, with Daisuke Sakaguchi as the child Ace. In English, Travis Willingham voices him in the Funimation dub. In Netflix's live-action series, Xolo Maridueña was announced in November 2025 as Ace for the third season, according to the Japanese Wikipedia entry, which cites the official ONE PIECE.com announcement. An actor's real height is never the character's canon height; the SBS figure of 185 cm remains the reference.

What 185 cm means in the real world

Ace's height is tall but well within normal human range. This site's Japan average height page, built from NCD Risk Factor Collaboration data, puts Japanese men born in 1996 at about 170.8 cm, so Ace is about 14 cm above the Japanese average. Our World in Data, summarizing the same dataset, gives about 171 cm for the global average man of that generation.

Real people at Ace's exact height on this site include:
