Giyu Tomioka's height: 176 cm (5′9¼″)

Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, is listed at 176 cm (5′9¼″) and 69 kg (152 lb). These are the figures in the Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki's character profile. Character stats for the Demon Slayer cast were published in Koyoharu Gotouge's official guidebooks, the Demon Slaying Corps Memorandum fanbooks of 2019 and 2021, but the wiki's infobox doesn't give a page citation for Giyu's height, so the site classes it as a fan-wiki figure. It has been stable across the fandom for years, and we found no official source that contradicts it.

The wiki describes Giyu as a fairly tall young man with a lean, muscular build and a pale complexion. That's a fair summary of how Gotouge draws him: not imposing like Gyomei or Tengen, but long-limbed and still, a body that suggests speed and control rather than raw power.

Height across Giyu's ages

The series gives Giyu one adult height, but it shows him at several ages. At 13 he passes the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane alongside his friend Sabito, a traumatic event at the core of his character. No height is published for that younger Giyu, and the flashbacks draw him as a slight boy.

By 19, when he first meets Tanjiro and Nezuko in chapter 1, he is drawn at full adult height. The story then jumps two years while Tanjiro trains under Sakonji Urokodaki, so from around chapter 28 Giyu is 21. For a Japanese man, growth in height is essentially finished by 19 to 21, so it's reasonable that his listed 176 cm applies to all of his appearances in the main story.

After the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, Giyu has lost his right arm and has cut his hair to neck length, according to the wiki. His height doesn't change, but his silhouette does: a one-armed Giyu in a light kimono and hakama looks very different from the Hashira in his split haori, and Gotouge uses that to mark the end of an era.

Giyu among the Hashira

The Hashira are the nine strongest swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Corps, and their heights range more widely than any other group in the series. Here is the full line-up from the site's data:

Hashira Title Height (cm) vs Giyu
Gyomei Himejima Stone 220 +44 cm
Tengen Uzui Sound 198 +22 cm
Sanemi Shinazugawa Wind 179 +3 cm
Kyojuro Rengoku Flame 177 +1 cm
Giyu Tomioka Water 176 —
Mitsuri Kanroji Love 167 −9 cm
Obanai Iguro Serpent 162 −14 cm
Muichiro Tokito Mist 160 −16 cm
Shinobu Kocho Insect 151 −25 cm

Giyu lands exactly in the middle: fifth of nine. Four Hashira are taller and four shorter. The interesting cluster is right above him. Sanemi (179), Rengoku (177) and Giyu (176) are within 3 cm of each other, meaning three of the Corps' most prominent swordsmen are essentially the same height. Their visual differences come from hair, posture and personality, not size.

That cluster matters for one of the series' memorable pairings. Giyu and Sanemi clash constantly, with Sanemi's hot temper pitted against Giyu's silence. At 179 and 176 cm they stand nearly eye to eye in those confrontations, which suits a rivalry between equals. Sanemi is noticeably heavier, though, at 75 kg to Giyu's 69 kg.

The fanbook's notes on how Giyu sees his colleagues have become fan favorites. According to the wiki, which quotes the second fanbook, he describes Rengoku as someone he likes because he "talks to me a lot," and says he envies Tengen for being so unrestrained. The fanbook also rates Giyu's openness at just 30%.

Giyu versus Tanjiro, Nezuko and the demons he fights

Outside the Hashira, Giyu's most important relationships are with the Kamado siblings and the demons he faces in the late arcs:

Character Height (cm) vs Giyu Relationship
Muzan Kibutsuji 179 +3 cm The demon progenitor, final enemy
Giyu Tomioka 176 — Water Hashira
Akaza 173 −3 cm Upper Rank Three, fought in the Infinity Castle
Tanjiro Kamado 165 −11 cm Fellow Urokodaki student
Nezuko Kamado 153 −23 cm The demon Giyu chose to spare

Two of these comparisons stand out.

Giyu and Tanjiro: 11 cm. Their first meeting in chapter 1 is shot from Giyu's height, looking down at Tanjiro kneeling in the snow and begging for his sister's life. Even standing, Tanjiro is 11 cm shorter, and Gotouge keeps that height difference visible until the Infinity Castle, when the two fight side by side as equals against Akaza. During that battle, Giyu reflects that Tanjiro's ability has grown to match a Hashira's, according to the Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki's summary of the fight. Height becomes irrelevant as their skill levels converge.

Giyu and Akaza: 3 cm. Upper Rank Three is listed at 173 cm, slightly shorter than Giyu. Their fight in the Infinity Castle is one of the series' great duels, and it's notable that Giyu's toughest opponent before Muzan is a near match for him in size. Akaza's power comes from demonic regeneration and his martial arts, not from being bigger.

The split haori and how Giyu's design reads

Giyu's haori is split down the middle, one half solid carmine and the other a geometric pattern. Each half comes from someone he lost: one from his sister Tsutako, who died protecting him, and one from his friend Sabito. On a lean 176 cm frame the long haori falls to his calves, and it changes how tall he looks. A long, vertical garment with a sharp center line makes a figure appear taller and slimmer, which is part of why Giyu often reads as taller on screen than his listed height.

Gotouge's early design notes, which the wiki quotes from the volume 1 extras, show Giyu with fingerless sleeves, a cloth tying the haori at the waist and loose hakama trousers. The final design removed the waist tie. Letting the haori fall straight lengthens his silhouette and makes him look more aloof, fitting a character defined by distance from others.

Build: what 176 cm and 69 kg add up to

Giyu's listed weight of 69 kg gives a useful picture of his build. At 176 cm, that works out to a body mass index of about 22.3, comfortably in the middle of the range health agencies describe as typical for adults. For a swordsman who trains daily, that number suggests a lean, wiry frame rather than a bulky one, which matches the art.

The Demon Slayer Corps' own numbers show how varied the swordsmen are:

  • Tanjiro, 165 cm and 61 kg, is compact and dense, with a BMI around 22.4, almost identical to Giyu's despite being 11 cm shorter.
  • Sanemi, 179 cm and 75 kg, is the heavier of the two rivals, with a BMI around 23.4.
  • Giyu, at 176 cm and 69 kg, is the lightest for his height of the three.

Water Breathing, Giyu's style, is shown as fluid and adaptable, built around flowing, redirecting movements rather than overpowering force. A lean, medium-height body is exactly what you'd expect a writer to give that style, and Gotouge's choice of numbers fits it.

Giyu on screen: anime, film and stage

In ufotable's anime adaptation, Giyu is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese and Johnny Yong Bosch in English, and the wiki lists two stage-play actors who have played him. None of these adaptations publish a different height. The anime keeps him at the same scale relative to Tanjiro and the other Hashira, and the 11 cm gap with Tanjiro is consistent across the TV series.

The Infinity Castle film trilogy, which began with a first film released in Japan on July 18, 2025, adapts the arc in which Giyu and Tanjiro fight Akaza together. By the published figures, the height order in that fight runs Giyu, then Akaza 3 cm shorter, then Tanjiro another 8 cm below.

Outside the main story, the comedic Kimetsu Academy extras recast Giyu as a strict gym teacher. They're played for laughs and don't change any of his stats, but they're one more place where his height and stern bearing make him the authority figure in the room.

What 176 cm meant in Taisho-era Japan

Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho era (1912–1926), and that changes how Giyu's height should be read. A 21-year-old in the story's present would have been born in the 1890s. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's reconstruction of historical heights, used on this site's Japan average height page, puts Japanese men born in 1896 at an average adult height of about 156.2 cm (5′1½″).

Against that, Giyu's 176 cm is about 20 cm above average, a striking difference. In his own time he would have been one of the tallest men in almost any room. The same is true of most of the Demon Slayer cast: even Tanjiro, at 165 cm, would have been well above the Taisho-era average.

The comparison with modern Japan is quite different:

Cohort Average male height (Japan) Giyu's difference
Men born in 1896 156.2 cm +19.8 cm
Men born in 1926 161.9 cm +14.1 cm
Men born in 1956 169.3 cm +6.7 cm
Men born in 1996 170.8 cm +5.2 cm

Japan saw one of the largest height increases of any country in the twentieth century, driven by better nutrition and public health. A 176 cm man today is tall but not exceptional. In 1910s Japan he would have been unusual. Gotouge drew the cast to modern proportions, which is standard for manga, but the historical numbers are a reminder of how much the real Taisho-era population differed.

Giyu's height in practical terms

For a modern reader, here is what 176 cm means:

  • It converts to about 5′9¼″, the same height as the site's 5′9″ page plus a quarter-inch.
  • It's close to the average for men born in the 1990s in the United States (177.1 cm in NCD-RisC's estimates) and slightly above Japan's (170.8 cm).
  • In the Demon Slayer cast, it's the height of a mid-sized Hashira, between Rengoku and Mitsuri.
