Real people the same height as Muzan Kibutsuji

Muzan Kibutsuji's official height: 179 cm

Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon and the central villain of Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is listed at 179 cm (5′10″). The figure comes from the Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook Vol. 2, the second Kisatsutai Kenbunroku, which Shueisha published on February 4, 2021, after the manga's serialization ended in May 2020. Converted precisely, 179 cm is 70.5 inches, or 5 feet 10.5 inches.

The number needs one qualification. Muzan is a shapeshifter. Over the course of the story he lives under several identities, appearing as a man, a woman and a young boy, and in the final battle his body changes dramatically. The 179 cm figure describes his primary form: the pale, elegant man in a Western suit and fedora whom Tanjiro first encounters on a street in Asakusa.

A demon king of ordinary height

Muzan is the most powerful being in Demon Slayer, yet his main form is a man of entirely ordinary size. That is a deliberate contrast. The series is full of huge, grotesque demons, but its ultimate villain usually looks like a well-dressed gentleman who could blend into a crowd. That is exactly how he survives for a thousand years: by hiding among humans rather than towering over them.

The English Wikipedia character list explains his origin: Muzan became the first demon through a failed experimental treatment in the Heian period, and he seeks to overcome his one weakness, sunlight. The Kimetsu no Yaiba Wiki adds that he pursues that goal in two ways, by searching for the Blue Spider Lily and by creating more demons in the hope that one will conquer the sun. The Japanese Wikipedia entry adds that Muzan's blood, or that of an upper-rank demon, turns a human into a demon if the body accepts it, which is how he creates every demon in the series.

Height plays no part in that power. Muzan's control over other demons is total: he can read their thoughts, kill them with a word and reshape his own body at will. A villain with that much power has no need to look large, and Gotouge's design leans into the menace of a calm, average-sized man.

Muzan's forms

Because Muzan can change shape, his height is not fixed in the story. The forms readers see include:

  • His main male form, the 179 cm figure in the fanbook, which he uses while posing as a businessman with a wife and daughter in Tokyo and in most encounters with the Twelve Kizuki.
  • A female form, a beautiful woman in a kimono, which he uses in certain meetings with his demons.
  • A child's form, a young boy he uses while living as an adopted son in a wealthy family.
  • His battle form in the final arc, in which his body grows whip-like limbs and mouths across his torso, and finally swells into an enormous mass as he tries to shield himself from the sun.

Only the first has an official measurement. When comparing Muzan with other characters, 179 cm is the right number, with the understanding that he can look shorter or vastly larger when he chooses.

Muzan next to Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps

The table below compares Muzan with the Corps members who fight him, using the heights recorded on this site.

Character Height Difference vs Muzan
Gyomei Himejima 220 cm +41 cm
Tengen Uzui 198 cm +19 cm
Genya Shinazugawa 180 cm +1 cm
Sanemi Shinazugawa 179 cm 0 cm
Muzan Kibutsuji 179 cm —
Kyojuro Rengoku 177 cm −2 cm
Giyu Tomioka 176 cm −3 cm
Mitsuri Kanroji 167 cm −12 cm
Tanjiro Kamado 165 cm −14 cm
Zenitsu Agatsuma 164.5 cm −14.5 cm
Inosuke Hashibira 164 cm −15 cm
Obanai Iguro 162 cm −17 cm
Nezuko Kamado 153 cm −26 cm
Shinobu Kocho 151 cm −28 cm

Muzan and Tanjiro

Tanjiro Kamado is 165 cm, 14 cm shorter than the demon who destroyed his family. Their first face-to-face meeting in Asakusa is a quiet one: Tanjiro recognizes Muzan's scent on a crowded street, and Muzan, holding a child in his arms, turns a passerby into a demon to cover his escape. The scene works because Muzan looks so ordinary, a tall but not unusual man in a hat, and only Tanjiro knows what he is.

Muzan and Nezuko

Nezuko Kamado, whom Muzan turned into a demon at the start of the story, is 153 cm in her normal form, 26 cm shorter than him. Her eventual immunity to sunlight is the very thing Muzan has wanted for a thousand years, which makes the small girl he dismissed the key to his goals.

Muzan and the Hashira

The Hashira who face Muzan in the final battle range from Shinobu Kocho at 151 cm to Gyomei Himejima at 220 cm. Muzan is the same height as Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira, and almost level with Giyu Tomioka and Kyojuro Rengoku. Only Gyomei and Tengen Uzui are clearly taller. In his battle form, though, Muzan is far larger than any of them, and his extending limbs give him a reach that makes ordinary height irrelevant.

Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki

Muzan's elite demons, the Twelve Kizuki, are listed in the same second fanbook, and several are taller than their master.

Demon Rank Height Difference vs Muzan
Kokushibo Upper One 190 cm +11 cm
Doma Upper Two 187 cm +8 cm
Muzan Kibutsuji Progenitor 179 cm —
Akaza Upper Three 173 cm −6 cm
Enmu Lower One 168 cm −11 cm
Kaigaku Upper Six (later) 167 cm −12 cm
Hantengu Upper Four 166 cm −13 cm
Rui Lower Five 135 cm −44 cm

The two strongest demons, Kokushibo and Doma, are both taller than Muzan. It is a telling detail: in the Infinity Castle and in their meetings, the demon king looks up physically at subordinates he could kill instantly. The Wikipedia list notes that after Rui's death, Muzan killed the Lower Ranks except Enmu and decided to keep only the Upper Ranks under his command. Akaza, the Upper Three, is 173 cm, 6 cm shorter than Muzan, and Rui, the child-like Lower Five, is the smallest at 135 cm.

How the manga and anime stage Muzan's size

Gotouge rarely draws Muzan as physically dominant in his human form. He is usually shown standing still, hands in pockets or resting on a cane, while other characters kneel, tremble or plead. His menace comes from framing: low angles, red slit-pupiled eyes and long, silent pauses. His official height arrived only with the second fanbook, published after the story was complete, so for most of the serialization readers judged his size purely from that staging, which tends to make him feel larger than an ordinary 179 cm man.

Ufotable's anime follows the same approach. In the first season, which began airing in April 2019, his Asakusa scene uses crowds and lantern light to make him a figure among many, while the later meeting of the Upper Ranks in the Infinity Castle places him above his demons on shifting stairways and balconies. The castle itself, a maze of rooms that rearranges at will, makes scale hard to judge, which suits a villain whose real size is a matter of choice.

The contrast with his battle form is stark. Once Muzan stops pretending to be human, the 179 cm gentleman becomes a writhing mass of limbs that can strike Hashira across a city block. For height charts, that form cannot be measured, so the fanbook number remains the only fair one. It is worth remembering, though, that every comparison with Muzan is a comparison with his disguise.

Height through the centuries: a Heian man in Taishō Japan

Muzan's age adds an unusual angle. He was born in the Heian period, more than a thousand years before the story's Taishō setting (1912 to 1926). Our World in Data's history of human height includes skeletal estimates for Japan: about 161 cm for men of the Yayoi period (300 BC to AD 250), about 159 cm for the medieval period (1200 to 1600), and about 158 cm for the Edo period (1603 to 1867). Heian men, living between the Yayoi and medieval eras, would likely have averaged somewhere in that range.

At 179 cm, a Heian-born Muzan would have been around 20 cm taller than the average man of his birth era. Even in the Taishō era, he would have stood out: NCD-RisC estimates, used on this site's Japan average height page, put Japanese men born in 1896 at about 156.2 cm, 23 cm shorter than Muzan.

Period Estimated average for Japanese men Muzan's difference
Yayoi (300 BC–AD 250), skeletal ~161 cm +18 cm
Medieval (1200–1600), skeletal ~159 cm +20 cm
Edo (1603–1867), skeletal ~158 cm +21 cm
Born 1896 (NCD-RisC) 156.2 cm +22.8 cm
Born 1996 (NCD-RisC) 170.8 cm +8.2 cm

In other words, Muzan's "ordinary" height is ordinary only to modern eyes. Among the people of Taishō-era Tokyo, a 179 cm man in a tailored Western suit would have been conspicuous, a detail that makes his ability to move through crowds unseen a little more impressive.

Spoiler note: the final battle

The final arc, adapted by Ufotable as the Infinity Castle film trilogy, begins when Muzan traps the Demon Slayer Corps inside his shifting fortress. The first film, released in Japan in July 2025, became the highest-grossing Japanese film, with $820.4 million worldwide according to Wikipedia. In the manga, according to the Wikipedia list, a composite drug weakens Muzan and suppresses his abilities, and he is ultimately destroyed by sunlight. According to the Wikipedia list, his last act is to turn Tanjiro into a demon as his successor, though Tanjiro's friends bring him back to humanity.

Tamayo, the demon who helped bring him down, is listed at 150 cm, 29 cm shorter than Muzan, another example of the series letting a smaller figure defeat a more imposing one.

What 179 cm means today

By modern standards, Muzan is tall but not exceptional. NCD-RisC puts Japanese men born in 1996 at 170.8 cm, about 8 cm shorter, and Our World in Data puts the global average man at about 171 cm. Real people near his height on this site:
