Real people the same height as Wolverine
Wolverine's official height: 5′3″, by design
Marvel lists Wolverine, born James Howlett and better known as Logan, at 160 cm (5′3″). The figure comes from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and appears on the Marvel Database entry for the main comic-book continuity. The same Handbook gives his weight as 195 lb (88 kg) without his adamantium skeleton and 300 lb (136 kg) with it. Few superheroes are listed this short, and fewer still are this heavy for their size.
Wolverine's height is not an accident or an artist's whim. It was set deliberately when the character was created, and it is tied directly to the animal he is named after. That makes him one of the rare superheroes whose small stature is part of the core concept rather than a detail added later.

Why Wolverine is short: the creators' reasoning
Wikipedia's account of the character's creation explains that Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas wanted a Canadian superhero and chose the wolverine as the inspiration. He asked writer Len Wein and artist John Romita Sr. to create the character. Romita designed the costume and, according to a history of the character cited by Wikipedia, set his height at 5 feet 3 inches, reflecting the small size of real wolverines.
Thomas himself explained the thinking in a 2018 interview with CBR. When he proposed the character to Wein, he gave three requirements: the character had to be Canadian and identified as such immediately, he had to have a quick temper, and he had to be short. In Thomas's words, "He was short, because a wolverine is a small animal." The animal is famous for ferocity out of proportion to its size and for taking on much larger beasts, which is exactly the personality the creators wanted.
Wolverine first appeared in the final teaser panel of The Incredible Hulk #180, cover-dated October 1974, written by Wein and penciled by Herb Trimpe, and made his full debut in issue #181 the following month. His first story put him in a fight with the Hulk, a creature many times his size, establishing from the outset the image of a small, furious brawler who refuses to back down.
Small but heavy: the adamantium skeleton
The most unusual part of Wolverine's Handbook profile is the gap between his two weights. The Weapon X program bonded adamantium, Marvel's virtually indestructible metal, to his entire skeleton, including the three retractable claws in each forearm. According to the Handbook, that metal adds roughly 105 lb (48 kg), taking a 195-pound man to 300 lb.
That gives Wolverine one of the most extreme weight-to-height ratios among human-scale heroes. At 5′3″ and 300 lb, he is heavier than characters a foot taller. The Marvel Database's entry describes his skeleton and claws as nearly unbreakable, and the weight is a constant background fact in his stories: he is hard to throw and hits much harder than his size suggests.
Wolverine compared with the X-Men and the Avengers
Here is how Logan compares with other characters in this site's Marvel database, using the Handbook's comic-book figures.
| Character | Height | Difference from Wolverine (160 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Thanos | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | 40.7 cm taller |
| Thor | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | 38.1 cm taller |
| Hawkeye | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | 30.5 cm taller |
| Deadpool | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 28.0 cm taller |
| Captain America | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 28.0 cm taller |
| Iron Man (Tony Stark) | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 25.4 cm taller |
| Storm | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 20.3 cm taller |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm (5′10″) | 17.8 cm taller |
| Black Widow | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 10.2 cm taller |
| Scarlet Witch | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 10.2 cm taller |
Wolverine is shorter than every character in that list. Among the major Avengers and X-Men in this site's data, he is the shortest adult hero, and by a considerable margin.
Wolverine and Captain America
The partnership between Logan and Captain America goes back, in Marvel continuity, to World War II. Cap is listed at 6′2″, which makes him 28 cm taller. In team scenes, artists often exaggerate the contrast between the tall, upright super-soldier and the hunched, compact mutant beside him.
Wolverine and Thor
The gap with Thor is even larger: 38 cm in height. In weight, the comparison is surprising. Wolverine's 300 lb with adamantium is substantial, but Thor's Asgardian density gives the 6′6″ god a listed 640 lb, more than twice Logan's mass.
Wolverine and Deadpool
Deadpool, the "Merc with a Mouth," is listed at 6′2″, 28 cm taller than Wolverine. The comics have long joked about the two healing-factor characters, and the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine paired them on screen, with Ryan Reynolds, listed at 188 cm, opposite Hugh Jackman, listed at 190.5 cm. On screen, the two actors are nearly the same height; on the page, the characters are not.
Rivals, family and the Hulk
Wolverine's most important relationships in the comics are with characters far bigger than he is, and the Marvel Database's Handbook-derived listings make the contrast concrete.
| Character | Relationship to Logan | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hulk (Savage Hulk) | First opponent, Incredible Hulk #181 | 213–244 cm (7′–8′) | 1,040–1,400 lb |
| Sabretooth (Victor Creed) | Archenemy | 198 cm (6′6″) | 275 lb |
| Cyclops (Scott Summers) | X-Men leader and rival | 191 cm (6′3″) | 195 lb |
| Daken (Akihiro) | Son | 175 cm (5′9″) | 167 lb |
| Wolverine (Logan) | — | 160 cm (5′3″) | 300 lb with adamantium |
| X-23 (Laura Kinney) | Clone and successor | 155 cm (5′1″) | Varies by source |
His first fight, against the Hulk, set the template: a 5′3″ mutant against a monster listed at seven to eight feet. Bruce Banner himself is listed at 5′10″, so even the Hulk's mild-mannered alter ego is 18 cm taller than Logan.
Sabretooth, Wolverine's archenemy, is listed at 6′6″, a full 38 cm taller, which is one reason their brutal fights read as a small predator against a large one. Cyclops, his long-time rival for Jean Grey's affections, is 6′3″, about 31 cm taller.
The family figures are telling. Logan's son Daken is listed at 5′9″, 15 cm taller than his father. Laura Kinney, the clone who became X-23 and later Wolverine herself, is the one member of the family shorter than Logan. Her Handbook height was originally given as 5′6″ in 2005, but the 2010 Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z revised it to 5′1″, and that is the figure the Marvel Database now uses. In weight, no one in the family comes close to the adamantium-laden original.
Hugh Jackman: a foot taller than the comics
The most famous fact about Wolverine's height is how different it is from the actor who played him for a quarter-century. Hugh Jackman is listed at 190.5 cm (6′3″) on this site, so he is about 30 cm, a full foot, taller than the comic-book Logan.
Jackman was not the first choice. Wikipedia's history of X-Men (2000) records that Dougray Scott was originally cast in a multi-film deal but dropped out in early October 1999 because of scheduling conflicts with Mission: Impossible 2 and injuries from a motorbike accident. Jackman was cast three weeks into filming on the strength of his audition; Russell Crowe, director Bryan Singer's first choice, had turned the role down and recommended him. The film opened in the United States on July 14, 2000.
Jackman went on to play Logan in ten films, from X-Men (2000) to Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). In that time the height gap with the comics became a running point of fan discussion. What Jackman brought was not the comic-book Logan's stature but his intensity, and audiences accepted the trade.
| Version | Height |
|---|---|
| Comic-book Wolverine (Handbook) | 160 cm (5′3″) |
| Hugh Jackman (actor) | 190.5 cm (6′3″) |
| Difference | about 30.5 cm (12 in) |
What 5′3″ means in the real world
At 160 cm, Wolverine is genuinely short for a man. The CDC's 2021–2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey puts the median height of American men aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the 5th percentile at 162.2 cm. Logan therefore sits below the 5th percentile: more than 95 of every 100 American men are taller than he is. As a Canadian character, the more fitting benchmark may be Canada, where NCD-RisC estimates that men born in 1996 average 178.1 cm, about 18 cm taller than Wolverine.
The conversion itself is clean: 160 cm divided by 2.54 is 62.99 inches, which rounds to exactly 5′3″, so the Handbook's imperial figure and this site's metric value describe the same height with no rounding drift. Real-world comparisons help. Comedian Kevin Hart is listed at 158 cm on this site, just 2 cm shorter than Wolverine. Tom Cruise (170 cm) and Lionel Messi (169 cm) are each about 10 cm taller. In other words, the most ferocious fighter in the Marvel Universe is about Kevin Hart's size, and he carries 300 lb on that frame thanks to the metal in his bones.
The height percentile calculator shows exactly where 160 cm falls for adult men, and the height comparison tool will place the comic-book Logan, Hugh Jackman and Captain America side by side at true scale.
How height figures in Wolverine's stories
Wolverine's size is part of his personality and his legend. He is the small man who never backs down, whose first appearance pits him against the Hulk and whose fights routinely involve much larger opponents. His healing factor and adamantium claws let him survive those fights, but his height makes them dramatic: he is always the underdog in a physical sense, even when he is the most dangerous person in the room.
His stature also shapes how artists draw him. The classic Wolverine silhouette is broad, hunched and low to the ground, with the distinctive hair and mask adding a little apparent height. Many artists have drawn him taller over the years, especially after the films made Jackman's version so familiar, but the Handbook figure has stayed at 5′3″. For fans, that number has become a badge of the character's identity: the best there is at what he does, at 160 cm.
Why some sites list Wolverine taller
You will sometimes see Wolverine listed at 5′9″, 6′0″ or even taller online. Those numbers almost always come from Hugh Jackman, from alternate-universe versions of the character or from artists' drawings rather than from Marvel's reference books. The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe lists the main-continuity Logan at 5′3″, which matches what Romita set at the character's creation and what Roy Thomas intended, and that is the figure this site uses.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Wolverine so short?
Because wolverines are small animals. Co-creator Roy Thomas told CBR that one of his three requirements for the character was that he be short, because a wolverine is a small animal known for taking on much bigger creatures. Artist John Romita Sr. set the height at 5 ft 3 in.
How much taller is Hugh Jackman than Wolverine?
Hugh Jackman is listed at 190.5 cm (6 ft 3 in) on this site, while the comic-book Wolverine is 160 cm (5 ft 3 in), so the actor is about 30 cm, or a full foot, taller than the character he played for 24 years.
How much does Wolverine weigh?
Marvel's Official Handbook lists Logan at 195 lb (88 kg) without his adamantium skeleton and 300 lb (136 kg) with it. The metal bonded to his bones adds roughly 105 lb, which is why he is so heavy for his height.
Is Wolverine shorter than Kevin Hart?
