Real people the same height as Iron Man

Iron Man's official height: 6′1″ out of the armor, about 6′6″ in it

Marvel's reference books list Tony Stark at 185.4 cm (6′1″) and 225 lb (102 kg) out of his armor. In the suit, the same sources put Iron Man at about 6′6″ (198 cm) and 425 lb (193 kg). These figures come from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, the long-running series of character encyclopedias Marvel has published since the 1980s, and they are recorded on the Marvel Database entry for the main comic-book continuity, known as Earth-616.

This site uses the unarmored 185.4 cm as Iron Man's canonical height, because it describes the man who builds and pilots every suit. The armored figure matters for many comparisons, though, and it is worth keeping both in mind. The difference, roughly 13 cm and 200 lb, comes from the armor's thick soles, layered plating and helmet, as well as the weight of its power systems and weapons.

Creating Iron Man: from gray armor to red and gold

Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39, released in December 1962 with a March 1963 cover date. Wikipedia's account of the character credits Stan Lee as editor and concept creator, Larry Lieber with developing the origin and scripting the first story, and Don Heck and Jack Kirby with the design. Lee modeled Tony Stark on Howard Hughes, the businessman, aviator and engineer famous for his arrogant playboy image, and used Errol Flynn as a reference for Stark's appearance. A tall, dashing industrialist was part of the concept from the start.

The armor changed quickly. In its first appearance it was bulky and gray; Marvel switched it to gold because of printing problems. Steve Ditko, who worked on only three issues in late 1963, then redesigned it into the red-and-gold scheme that became the character's signature look. Over the following decades the suits became sleeker and more form-fitting, which is one reason the Handbook's 6′6″ armored height is only about 13 cm more than Stark's own: modern Iron Man armor hugs the body rather than encasing it in a boxy shell.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe version

Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark from Iron Man (2008), the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, through Avengers: Endgame (2019). Downey is listed at 173 cm (5′8″) on this site, so the actor is about 12 cm shorter than the comic-book Tony Stark.

The MCU did not simply adopt the comic figure. The Marvel Database's separate entry for the film version of Stark (designated Earth-199999) lists him at 5′9″ out of armor, sourced to a S.H.I.E.L.D. file shown in a deleted scene from The Avengers (2012), and at 6′5″ in armor, citing a 2010 WIRED feature on the suits from Iron Man 2. Those are not Handbook figures and should be read as film-specific details, but they show how the film version was built around a shorter lead actor.

Version Unarmored In armor
Comics (Earth-616), Official Handbook 6′1″ (185.4 cm) 6′6″ (198 cm)
MCU (Earth-199999), per Marvel Database 5′9″ (175 cm) 6′5″ (196 cm)
Robert Downey Jr. (actor) 173 cm (5′8″) —

The armor is what makes the MCU version read as a large hero on screen. Even if the man is 5′9″, the suit brings him to a height comparable to the comic's armored figure. That is also why, in group shots of the Avengers, Iron Man rarely looks small: the helmet and boots add height that Downey's own frame does not have.

You can compare Downey with other stars on his celebrity height page, which covers his listed height in more detail.

Iron Man compared with the Avengers and other Marvel characters

Here is how Tony Stark measures up against other characters in this site's Marvel database, using the comic-book Handbook heights.

Character Height Difference from Tony (185.4 cm)
Thanos 200.7 cm (6′7″) 15.3 cm taller
Thor 198.1 cm (6′6″) 12.7 cm taller
Hawkeye 190.5 cm (6′3″) 5.1 cm taller
Captain America 188.0 cm (6′2″) 2.6 cm taller
Doctor Strange 188.0 cm (6′2″) 2.6 cm taller
Doctor Doom (unarmored) 188.0 cm (6′2″) 2.6 cm taller
Black Panther 182.9 cm (6′0″) 2.5 cm shorter
Captain Marvel 180.3 cm (5′11″) 5.1 cm shorter
Spider-Man 177.8 cm (5′10″) 7.6 cm shorter
Black Widow 170.2 cm (5′7″) 15.2 cm shorter
Wolverine 160.0 cm (5′3″) 25.4 cm shorter

Iron Man and Captain America

The rivalry at the heart of Civil War, in both its comic and film forms, pits Tony against Captain America, who is listed at 6′2″. Out of armor, Cap is just under an inch taller. In armor, Iron Man's 6′6″ puts him well above the super-soldier, which shapes the staging of their fights: Steve fights a taller, heavier opponent and relies on his shield and agility. In the MCU, with Stark listed at 5′9″ and Cap played by the taller Chris Evans, the out-of-armor gap is noticeably larger.

Iron Man and Thor

Thor is listed at 6′6″, essentially the same as Iron Man in armor and about 13 cm taller than Tony on his own. In the comics, Tony built the "Thorbuster" armor specifically to withstand the Asgardian's attacks, and the Marvel Database notes that some of Iron Man's suits can resist even Thor's strikes. Height for height, an armored Iron Man stands eye to eye with the god of thunder.

Iron Man and Spider-Man

Spider-Man is listed at 5′10″, about 7.6 cm shorter than Tony. The mentor relationship between Stark and Peter Parker in the MCU, from Captain America: Civil War through Avengers: Endgame, adds a further age gap to the height gap: Tom Holland's Peter is a teenager, and Stark's armor towers over the Spider-Man suit he builds for him.

Iron Man and Thanos

In the comics, Thanos is listed at 6′7″, only 15 cm taller than Tony out of armor and a few centimeters taller than Iron Man in the suit. The MCU made Thanos much larger: CBR, a source Wikipedia cites for the figure, gives the film version as 8′3″. That makes the final battle in Avengers: Endgame a far greater mismatch than it would be in the comics.

How much height does a suit of armor add?

Iron Man is not the only armored character whose reference books give two heights. Comparing him with his fellow armored genius, Doctor Doom, and with the most famous armored villain in film, Darth Vader, shows how consistently designers add height through helmets, plating and boots.

Character Unarmored In armor Height added Weight in armor
Iron Man (Tony Stark) 185.4 cm (6′1″) about 198 cm (6′6″) about 13 cm 425 lb
Doctor Doom (Victor von Doom) 188 cm (6′2″) about 201 cm (6′7″) about 13 cm 415 lb
Darth Vader (Anakin Skywalker) 188 cm (6′2″) 203 cm (6′8″) 15 cm 120 kg (265 lb)

The Marvel Handbook figures for Tony and Victor are strikingly parallel. Both men gain about 5 inches (13 cm) in armor, and both nearly double their weight: Tony goes from 225 lb to 425 lb, Doom from 225 lb to 415 lb. That symmetry fits two characters often written as mirror images, the American industrialist and the Latverian monarch, each a scientist who turned himself into a walking weapon. Darth Vader, whose armor is life support rather than a weapon, gains a little more height from his tall helmet, but his official mass in armor is much lower than either Marvel figure.

The pattern also shows why it matters which number a height chart uses. An unarmored Tony Stark is a little shorter than Doctor Doom; in armor, the two are within an inch of each other. Comparing Iron Man in armor with an unarmored Doom, as some fan charts do, exaggerates the difference. For Marvel's armored characters, this site stores the unarmored Handbook figure as the canonical height and notes the armored figure separately, so like can be compared with like.

How height and size figure in Iron Man's story

Size is built into Iron Man's concept in a way that is unusual among superheroes. Tony Stark has no innate powers. His strength, flight and durability all come from the armor, and so does the extra height and mass. The Handbook's numbers capture that: the suit adds about 13 cm and 200 lb to a man who is already tall. Marvel described the armor in 2010 as able to lift 100 tons and fly at Mach 8, capabilities that would be impossible for the unarmored 6′1″ engineer.

The armor's size has also been used for drama. Specialized suits such as the Hulkbuster and Thorbuster are designed to match much larger or stronger opponents, and in both comics and films Tony scales his technology to the threat. The flip side is vulnerability. Stories regularly strip Tony of his armor, as in his escape from captivity in his origin story or when the Marvel Database recounts him being shot down and forced to continue on foot, and in those moments the 6′1″ man is an ordinary human in a world of gods and giants.

What 6′1″ means in the real world

At 185.4 cm, the comic-book Tony Stark is tall. The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2021–2023 puts the median height of American men aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the 90th percentile at 184.8 cm. Tony therefore sits at roughly the 90th percentile, taller than about nine in ten American men. In his armor, at about 198 cm, he would be well above the 95th percentile of 187.2 cm.

The MCU's 5′9″ Stark, by contrast, is almost exactly average, very close to the American median. The height difference calculator will show the gap between any two Iron Man figures, or between Tony and you. The main comparison tool can place Stark, his armor and the rest of the Avengers side by side.

Why sites disagree on Iron Man's height

Most of the confusion around Iron Man's height comes from mixing up three different figures: the comic-book Handbook height (6′1″), the armored height (about 6′6″), and the MCU or actor height (5′8″ to 5′9″). Each is correct in its own context. This site's canonical value is the Handbook's unarmored 185.4 cm, because it is Marvel's official figure for the character, it describes Tony rather than his equipment, and it allows consistent comparison with other characters whose heights come from the same Handbook.
