Thor's official height: 6′6″ and 640 pounds
Marvel's Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe lists Thor Odinson at 198.1 cm (6′6″) and 640 lb (290 kg). The Marvel Database repeats them for Thor's main comic-book continuity, Earth-616, and this site follows those numbers. At 6′6″, the god of thunder is one of the tallest members of the Avengers, and his weight is more than double what a human of his height would normally carry.
The Handbook also records a second set of numbers. When Thor lived as his mortal alter ego, the surgeon Dr. Donald Blake, he stood 175 cm (5′9″) and weighed 150 lb (68 kg). The 23 cm difference between the two forms is one of the largest height changes in mainstream superhero comics, and it was a central part of Thor's early stories.
| Form | Height | Weight | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thor Odinson | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | 640 lb (290 kg) | Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe |
| Dr. Donald Blake | 175 cm (5′9″) | 150 lb (68 kg) | Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe |
Why Thor is so heavy: Asgardian density
Thor's 640-pound weight is the most striking number in his Handbook profile. A 6′6″ human athlete might weigh 250 to 300 lb; Thor weighs more than twice that. Marvel's reference material explains the difference. According to Thor & Hercules: Encyclopaedia Mythologica, as summarized on the Marvel Database's Asgardians page, the skin, muscle and bone of the Asgardian gods are about three times as dense as the same tissue in a human body. That density contributes both to their superhuman strength and to their weight.
So Thor's mass is not a sign that he is a much larger figure than his 6′6″ suggests. He is a tall, powerfully built man whose body is made of denser material. That is why he can stand eye to eye with a human of the same height and outweigh him several times over, and why furniture, vehicles and floors in Marvel stories sometimes struggle under Asgardian visitors.
From Donald Blake to the god of thunder
Wikipedia's account of the character credits Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby with creating Marvel's Thor, who debuted in Journey into Mystery #83 in August 1962. Lee drafted the concept and gave the scripting to his brother Lieber, while Kirby designed the character's look.
In the original premise, Odin banished Thor to Earth without memory of his Asgardian past and gave him the identity of Donald Blake, a doctor with an injured leg. While visiting Scandinavia, Blake found a walking stick that turned into the hammer Mjolnir when he struck it against the ground, transforming him into Thor. When Thor was separated from the hammer for more than sixty seconds, he reverted to Blake. In Thor #159 (1968), Blake was revealed to be a fabrication created by Odin to teach his son humility.
The height difference was a big part of that lesson. Blake, at 5′9″ and 150 lb, was an ordinary man, slightly below the average height of an American man today and physically limited by his injury. Thor, at 6′6″ and 640 lb, was a god. Every transformation was a visual reminder of what Thor had lost and what he could reclaim. The Marvel Database's separate Donald Blake entry also records Thor's height as 6′6″ under the alias Sigurd Jarlson, a later human identity in which Thor kept his full size and simply wore glasses and ordinary clothes.
Mjolnir itself has an unusual size story. According to the Marvel Database, the dwarven smiths Brokk and Eitri forged the hammer's handle too short because Loki distracted them during its creation. The result looks more like a short-handled mallet than a traditional war hammer, which is why Thor's hammer appears compact in his large hand.
Thor compared with the Avengers and other Marvel heroes
Here is how Thor compares with other characters in this site's Marvel database, using the Handbook's comic-book heights.
| Character | Height | Difference from Thor (198.1 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Groot (full size) | 701 cm (23′0″) | 502.9 cm taller |
| Thanos | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | 2.6 cm taller |
| Iron Man (in armor) | about 198 cm (6′6″) | About the same |
| Hawkeye | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | 7.6 cm shorter |
| Captain America | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 10.1 cm shorter |
| Doctor Strange | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 10.1 cm shorter |
| Iron Man (Tony Stark) | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Black Panther | 182.9 cm (6′0″) | 15.2 cm shorter |
| Captain Marvel | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 17.8 cm shorter |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm (5′10″) | 20.3 cm shorter |
| Scarlet Witch | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 27.9 cm shorter |
| Wolverine | 160.0 cm (5′3″) | 38.1 cm shorter |
Thor and Iron Man
Iron Man is listed at 6′1″ out of his armor and about 6′6″ in it. Unarmored, Tony Stark is about 13 cm shorter than Thor; armored, the two stand eye to eye. The Marvel Database notes that Tony built specialized armor capable of resisting even Thor's attacks, the so-called Thorbuster, and their occasional clashes in the comics are framed as a contest between technology and godhood at roughly equal scale.
Thor and Captain America
Captain America is listed at 6′2″, so Thor has about 10 cm on him. The two founding Avengers are often paired in team scenes, and the height difference helps distinguish the god from the super-soldier. Cap's strength is the peak of human potential; Thor's is something else entirely, and his extra height and enormous weight underline it.
Thor and Thanos
In the comics, Thanos is listed at 6′7″, only about an inch taller than Thor. Their battles in the comics are therefore fought at nearly equal height. The films changed that dramatically: CBR gives the MCU Thanos as 8′3″, which turns the confrontations in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame into a much more lopsided picture.
Thor and Wolverine
The biggest gap among the core heroes is with Wolverine, the famously compact X-Man, who is listed at 5′3″. Thor stands 38 cm (15 inches) taller. In weight, the gap is even larger: Wolverine's Handbook listing is about 300 lb with his adamantium skeleton, less than half of Thor's 640 lb.
The House of Odin and the other Thors
Thor is tall, but by the standards of his own family he is not the tallest. The Marvel Database's Handbook-derived listings for the Asgardian royal family and for other wielders of Mjolnir show how the comics have sized Thor's world.
| Character | Relationship to Thor | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odin Borson | Father, All-Father of Asgard | 206 cm (6′9″) | 650 lb (700 lb in his prime) |
| Beta Ray Bill | Korbinite warrior, worthy of Mjolnir | 201 cm (6′7″) | 480 lb |
| Thor Odinson | — | 198 cm (6′6″) | 640 lb |
| Loki Laufeyson | Adoptive brother | 193 cm (6′4″) | 525 lb |
| Jane Foster as Thor | Successor who wielded Mjolnir | 175 cm (5′9″) | 450 lb |
| Jane Foster | Ally and love interest | 170 cm (5′7″) | 135 lb |
Odin stands 3 inches taller than his son, a gap that suits the All-Father's role as the one figure Thor cannot simply overpower. Loki, adopted from the Frost Giants of Jotunheim but sized like an Asgardian, is 2 inches shorter than Thor, and his listed weight of 525 lb again reflects Asgardian density rather than bulk.
The Jane Foster figures are especially interesting for a height site. When Jane took up Mjolnir and became Thor in the 2014–2019 comics, the Handbook-derived listing has her growing from 5′7″ to 5′9″ and her weight jumping from 135 lb to 450 lb. Like Donald Blake before her, the transformation changes the body, not just the costume. Remarkably, the female Thor's 5′9″ exactly matches Donald Blake's height, so both of Mjolnir's human hosts became gods while landing on the same mortal number.
Thor beyond Marvel: other 6′6″ heroes
Thor shares his exact listed height with one of fantasy's most famous kings. Aragorn, the heir of Isildur in The Lord of the Rings, is also listed at 198.1 cm on this site, based on Tolkien's own writings about the Dúnedain. The two would stand precisely eye to eye.
In DC Comics, Superman is listed at 6′3″ (190.5 cm), about 7.6 cm shorter than Thor, while Wonder Woman, at 6′0″ (182.9 cm), would stand about 15 cm below him. These cross-publisher comparisons come up often in fan debates, and the official numbers show that Thor is the tallest of the classic "god-tier" heroes when no one is changing size.
Chris Hemsworth and the MCU's Thor
Chris Hemsworth first played Thor in Thor (2011) and has continued in the role through The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), along with a cameo in Doctor Strange (2016) and voice work for the animated What If...?
Hemsworth is listed at 191 cm (6′3″) on this site, so the actor is about 7 cm shorter than the comic-book Thor. CBR's ranking of MCU character heights uses 6′3″ for the film's Thor. On screen, Hemsworth's height and build make Thor one of the largest Avengers, and the films stage him beside shorter co-stars to emphasize it. CBR notes, for instance, that Natalie Portman, who plays Jane Foster, is about 5′2″, a gap of more than a foot from Hemsworth's Thor.
How size figures in Thor's stories
Height and mass are woven into Thor's identity in several ways. The Blake transformation turned a 5′9″ doctor into a 6′6″ god, and the contrast was the emotional engine of his early comics. Asgardian density explains why Thor can absorb blows that would crush a human and why his weight is so extreme. Even his hammer plays with scale: a short-handled weapon that only the worthy can lift, no matter how strong they are.
The films added a twist. In Avengers: Endgame, a grieving Thor has let himself go, and the film shows a much heavier version of the character. That change was about weight and condition, not height; his stature remains the same.
What 6′6″ means in the real world
At 198.1 cm, Thor is very tall by human standards. The CDC's 2021–2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey puts the median height of American men aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the 95th percentile at 187.2 cm. Thor stands more than 10 cm above that 95th percentile, a height reached by well under 1 in 20 American men and more typical of professional basketball forwards. Donald Blake's 175 cm, by contrast, sits almost exactly at the American median.
The height comparison tool can place Thor, Blake and Hemsworth side by side so you can see the 23 cm transformation at true scale, and the height difference calculator will show exactly how far you would be looking up at the god of thunder.
