Maki Zenin's official height: 170 cm (5′7″)

Maki Zenin is one of the few Jujutsu Kaisen characters with a height that is both exact and confirmed twice. Her Volume 5 character profile lists her at 170 cm (5′7″), and the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook repeats the figure on pages 112–113, according to the Jujutsu Kaisen Wiki's citations. Unlike Gojo ("over 190 cm") or Yuta ("almost 180 cm"), there's no qualifier. She's simply 170.

The wiki describes her as a young woman of above-average height with an athletic build, which matches how Gege Akutami draws her: long-limbed, upright and usually holding a weapon that adds to her reach. In a cast where the female characters range from Momo Nishimiya at 150 cm to Maki at 170, she is the tallest of the Jujutsu High women with published heights, level with her twin.

Maki and Mai: identical twins, identical heights

Maki's twin sister, Mai Zenin, is also listed at 170 cm, so the twins match exactly. That fits the story. Maki is the elder twin, and the wiki notes that jujutsu treats twins as a single person, which is why the two of them split what would normally belong to one sorcerer: Mai had the cursed technique and most of the cursed energy, and Maki had almost none.

Matching heights make the visual contrast between them a matter of style rather than size. Maki carries polearms and blades and dresses for combat; Mai fights with a revolver and, later, a technique that creates objects at great cost. Put them side by side and the silhouettes are nearly the same, which makes their opposite choices (Maki leaving the Zenin clan, Mai staying behind) stand out all the more.

Real identical twins usually end up very close in adult height, because height is strongly inherited and identical twins share the same genes. A 2003 study of 30,111 twin pairs across eight countries (Silventoinen and colleagues, Twin Research) estimated the heritability of adult height at roughly 0.68 to 0.84 for women under its main model, meaning most of the variation between people in those populations traced back to genes. Two identical sisters raised in the same household landing on exactly the same number is realistic, not just a stylistic shortcut.

Heavenly Restriction: strength without extra size

Maki's defining trait is her Heavenly Restriction, the "Physically Gifted" type: in exchange for severely low cursed energy, she was born with exceptional physical abilities. Late in the series, after Mai's death leaves Maki with no cursed energy at all, the wiki describes her as the second known person after Toji Fushiguro to escape cursed energy completely, with strength comparable to his. Barriers treat her like an object, and she can't be sensed through cursed energy.

What the restriction doesn't do, as far as any official source says, is make her bigger. Her listed 170 cm is the same before and after the awakening, and identical to Mai's. Akutami's version of superhuman physique is about density, speed and senses, not mass. That sets her apart from many shonen power-ups, where a character's body swells to show new strength. Maki stays the same size and becomes far more dangerous.

There's a real-world parallel. In most sports, raw height matters less than how a body is trained and coordinated. A 170 cm athlete with elite power and reaction time will beat a much taller untrained opponent. Maki's fights, especially the Zenin clan arc, are drawn around that idea: she wins through speed, timing and weapon reach rather than towering over anyone.

Maki versus the Jujutsu Kaisen cast

Here is how 170 cm places Maki among the main cast, using the site's Jujutsu Kaisen data:

Character Height (cm) Height (ft/in) vs Maki
Satoru Gojo 190 (min) 6′3″+ 20 cm+ taller
Panda 190 (min) 6′3″+ 20 cm+ taller
Yuta Okkotsu almost 180 just under 5′11″ about 9 cm taller
Megumi Fushiguro 175 5′9″ 5 cm taller
Yuji Itadori 173 5′8″ 3 cm taller
Maki Zenin 170 5′7″ —
Mai Zenin 170 5′7″ same
Toge Inumaki almost 170 just under 5′7″ a hair shorter
Nobara Kugisaki 160 5′3″ 10 cm shorter
Momo Nishimiya 150 4′11″ 20 cm shorter

Some useful takeaways:

  • Within her own class, Maki is roughly level with Toge and well below Yuta and Panda. In the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 line-up she is the shortest of the three human-sized second-years only by a whisker, if at all.
  • Against the first-years, she is shorter than Megumi and Yuji but by small margins: 5 cm and 3 cm. On the page she often looks taller than Yuji, because she stands straight and carries long weapons.
  • Among the women, she and Mai are the tallest with official heights. Nobara is a full 10 cm shorter, and Momo 20 cm.

How weapons change Maki's apparent size

Because Maki has almost no cursed energy, she fights with cursed tools: spears, polearms, swords and, in the later arcs, the Split Soul Katana and the Dragon-Bone blade. Her preferred long weapons stretch her reach far beyond what a 170 cm body would normally have.

That's a practical point, not just a visual one. Arm span in adults is usually close to standing height, so a 170 cm fighter's natural reach is modest. Add a polearm as long as she is tall and her effective striking range roughly doubles, far beyond what a taller unarmed opponent can cover. Maki's training of Yuta in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is built on that logic. She's shorter than him and far stronger in the fundamentals, and she uses distance and timing to take him apart in sparring.

Glasses, posture and the "tall girl" design

For most of the series Maki wears glasses. The wiki explains that they're special lenses that let her see curses, since her low cursed energy means she can't perceive them unaided. Combined with her height and short ponytail, the glasses give her a distinctive, slightly severe look among the students.

Her posture also does a lot of work. Akutami tends to draw her standing tall, chin up, often with a weapon resting on her shoulder. Compare that with the first-year Yuta in the prequel, who is about 9 cm taller but hunches, and the effect is striking: in early scenes together, Maki often reads as the more imposing of the two. Height on the page is as much about attitude as centimeters.

After the Zenin clan arc she loses the glasses, because her fully realized body no longer needs them, and she gains burn scars from the events of Shibuya. Her height stays the same, but she looks harder, and that again comes from design and posture rather than any change in her listed figure.

Manga versus anime: what changes and what doesn't

MAPPA's anime adaptation keeps Maki's 170 cm frame and proportions but changes her coloring. The Jujutsu Kaisen Wiki notes that her hair is black in the manga and dark green in the anime, and her eyes shift from green to amber. Those are palette decisions for the adaptation, and they don't affect her size.

What the anime does emphasize is scale in motion. Fight choreography in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (the 2021 film) and the TV seasons uses wide shots to show Maki's polearm sweeping arcs well beyond her body, and close shots during the Zenin clan fight to show how small she is relative to the clan's cursed spirits and the Hei sorcerers she takes on. The result is a character who looks average-sized next to her classmates and tiny next to her enemies, while still controlling the space around her.

The anime and film also let viewers compare her directly with Yuta in the same frame for the first time in color. Because the prequel film follows Yuta's first months at school, it shows plenty of scenes of the two training together, with the 9 cm gap clearly visible when they stand still and much less obvious once they start moving.

Maki across the timeline

Maki's height is stable across every era the series shows, but her circumstances change dramatically, and it's worth separating the two:

  1. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (age 15): a first-year who has left the Zenin clan, wearing glasses to see curses and training the new transfer, Yuta.
  2. Main story, Goodwill Event to Shibuya (age 16): now a second-year, still officially 170 cm. In Shibuya she is badly burned, which later leaves visible scars.
  3. Zenin clan arc: after Mai's death, Maki's Heavenly Restriction becomes complete. She no longer needs glasses and fights on a level the wiki compares to Toji Fushiguro.
  4. Culling Game and Shinjuku: she fights as one of the strongest physical combatants in the series, still at the same listed height.
  5. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo (age 77): the spin-off set decades later shows an elderly Maki. No height is published for this version.

That consistency is useful on a comparison site. Unlike characters with pre- and post-timeskip figures, Maki has one number for her whole life as shown, so any comparison you make with her uses the same 170 cm.

What 170 cm means for a Japanese woman

Maki is Japanese and was born in 2002, so the right real-world comparison is Japanese women of her generation. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's estimates on this site's Japan average height page put Japanese women born in 1996 at an average of about 158.3 cm (5′2″). Maki's 170 cm is roughly 12 cm above that average.

In practical terms:

  • In a Japanese high school, a 170 cm girl would usually be among the tallest in her year.
  • She'd be close to the average height of Japanese men born in the same period, about 170.8 cm.
  • Compared with American women of the same generation, about 163.5 cm in the same dataset, she's still around 6 to 7 cm taller.
  • Among Dutch women, the tallest national average in the data at about 168.7 cm, she'd be only slightly above average.

So Maki's "above average" description holds up strongly in Japan and modestly elsewhere. If you want to see how common her height is, the 170 cm page breaks it down against U.S. and global percentiles.
