How tall is Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise is listed on this site at 170 cm (5′7″), the figure recorded on Wikidata and repeated in mainstream coverage of the actor for decades. When author Lee Child discussed Cruise's casting as Jack Reacher with BBC Radio in 2018, news agencies covering the interview, including IANS, described Cruise as standing 5′7″. Uproxx used the same figure when it revisited the casting in 2022.

Cruise himself has almost never discussed his height publicly, and his studios have not issued official measurements. That makes him different from athletes, whose heights are recorded on rosters, or from people who have volunteered a number in interviews. The 5′7″ figure has nonetheless been stable in reputable reporting for most of his career, and no major outlet has published a conflicting measured value. On the 5′7″ conversion page you can see how the figure translates exactly: 5′7″ is 170.2 cm, so the site's rounded 170 cm and the imperial listing are effectively the same.

The leading man who never needed to be tall

Cruise was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York. He broke through with Risky Business (1983) and became one of the biggest stars in the world with Top Gun (1986). Critical recognition followed with Rain Man (1988), which won Best Picture, and Born on the Fourth of July (1989), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He later collected nominations for Jerry Maguire (1996) and Magnolia (1999), and he has played Ethan Hunt across the Mission: Impossible series since 1996. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and became his highest-earning film.

That career is a useful counterexample to a common assumption about Hollywood: that a leading man has to be tall. Cruise, at 170 cm, sits a few centimeters below the American male average, yet he has been one of the most bankable action stars for four decades. Film is a medium where height can be shaped by framing, camera height, lens choice and staging, and many leading men of Cruise's generation and earlier, from Humphrey Bogart (173 cm on this site) to Al Pacino (168 cm), have been of average or below-average height. What audiences respond to on screen is presence and physical confidence, and Cruise has built his brand on exactly that.

Physicality over stature

Cruise is famous for performing his own stunts, and much of his modern reputation rests on them. For Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), he climbed and ran across the exterior glass of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest building at 828 m. He was secured by multiple cables, which Industrial Light & Magic digitally erased afterward, but the sequence was shot for real on the building's facade. In later films he has hung from the side of a cargo plane during takeoff, performed HALO skydiving jumps, piloted helicopters and driven a motorcycle off a cliff. Those feats are part of why his height is rarely the first thing audiences think about: his on-screen persona is defined by athleticism, endurance and nerve rather than by size.

The Ghost Protocol stunt offers a striking scale comparison. The Burj Khalifa is about 487 times Cruise's height. Even the floor he worked on was hundreds of meters above the ground, so the 10 or 15 cm that separate him from a taller actor become irrelevant in the frame.

The Jack Reacher debate

The one time Cruise's height became a genuine news story was over his casting as Jack Reacher. Lee Child's novels describe Reacher as a 6′5″ former military policeman, massive enough that his size is a recurring plot device: he intimidates opponents simply by standing in a doorway. When Cruise was cast in Jack Reacher (2012), many readers objected that a 5′7″ actor could not convey that presence.

Cruise starred in the 2012 film and its 2016 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Forces News noted that the first film earned about £167 million worldwide and that reviews of Cruise's performance were mostly positive. Child himself was pleased with the films at the time, according to Uproxx.

In November 2018, though, Child told BBC Radio that there would be no more Reacher movies with Cruise. As reported by IANS and Gulf News, Child said Reacher's size is a big part of who he is and that Cruise "didn't have that physicality," and he conceded that readers who objected had a point. He was also careful to praise Cruise's acting, saying Cruise captured the inside of the character well. The franchise moved to Amazon Prime Video as the series Reacher, with Alan Ritchson, a much larger actor, in the lead.

The episode is a rare case in which an actor's height was openly discussed by the creator of a role, and it was covered respectfully on both sides: Child framed it as a question of fidelity to a physically defined character rather than a criticism of Cruise.

With Nicole Kidman

Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on Days of Thunder (1990), married that year and went on to make Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999) together. At 180 cm, Kidman is about 10 cm taller than Cruise, Their marriage ended in 2001. The height difference is often mentioned in coverage of the couple, but in their films together it was rarely visible because of the way scenes were staged.

With Brad Pitt and Henry Cavill

In Interview with the Vampire (1994), Brad Pitt was about 10 cm taller than Cruise, yet Cruise's vampire Lestat was the dominant character, a reminder that screen presence is not a function of height. In Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), Henry Cavill, at 185 cm, played opposite Cruise as the physically imposing August Walker, and the film used the 15 cm gap to emphasize the threat his character posed.

With Dustin Hoffman

Rain Man paired Cruise with Dustin Hoffman, one of the few major co-stars noticeably shorter than him. At about 5 cm, the gap was small enough that the film's famous road-trip framing kept them near eye level for most of its running time. You can compare any two of these actors directly with the height difference calculator.

How Cruise compares with the average American man

According to the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, American men born in 1956 reached an average adult height of 177.2 cm and those born in 1976 averaged 177.5 cm, so the cohort average for Cruise's 1962 birth year is about 177.3 cm (5′10″). Cruise's 170 cm is roughly 7 cm below that figure. The full trend is on the United States average height page.

In the CDC's 2021–2023 NHANES measurements, American men aged 60 to 69 averaged 174.7 cm, with a 25th percentile of 169.7 cm. That puts Cruise at roughly the 25th percentile for his age group: about three out of four American men his age are taller, while one in four is the same height or shorter. You can run the same comparison for any height with the height percentile calculator.

Benchmark Height Cruise's difference
US men born ~1962 (NCD-RisC) ~177.3 cm −7.3 cm
US men 60–69, mean (NHANES 2021–23) 174.7 cm −4.7 cm
US men 60–69, 25th percentile 169.7 cm +0.3 cm
US women 60–69, 95th percentile (approx.) about 172 cm about −2 cm

In other words, Cruise is neither unusually short nor tall by everyday standards. He would not stand out in a crowd of men his age, and he is noticeably taller than the average American woman, who stands around 161 cm.

Cruise among Hollywood's action stars

It helps to see Cruise alongside other actors who built careers on action and physical roles. The heights below come from the site's data.

Actor Height Difference vs Cruise
Sylvester Stallone 177 cm (5′10″) +7 cm
Robert De Niro 177 cm (5′10″) +7 cm
Robert Downey Jr. 173 cm (5′8″) +3 cm
Tom Holland 173 cm (5′8″) +3 cm
Mark Wahlberg 172.7 cm (5′8″) +2.7 cm
Tom Cruise 170 cm (5′7″) —
Al Pacino 168 cm (5′6″) −2 cm
Daniel Radcliffe 165 cm (5′5″) −5 cm

The pattern is clear: several of the most successful action and franchise leads of the past 50 years have stood within a few centimeters of Cruise. Robert Downey Jr. carried the Marvel films as Iron Man at 173 cm, and Tom Holland plays Spider-Man at the same height. Very tall leading men exist, of course, but the evidence of box-office history is that audiences do not require their heroes to be tall. They respond to energy, charisma and the sense that the actor is really doing what the character does, and Cruise's commitment to performing his own stunts gives him that last quality in abundance.

Why the height conversation follows Cruise anyway

Given that so many stars share his height, why is Cruise's height discussed more often than theirs? A few reasons stand out in the coverage. His most famous roles, from a Navy fighter pilot to a superspy and a 6′5″ drifter, are archetypes traditionally associated with physical dominance. He has been married to, and frequently photographed with, actresses taller than him. And the Reacher episode put the question directly in the headlines, with the creator of a character publicly saying the role needed a bigger actor. None of that changes the underlying number, but it explains why a 170 cm actor generates more height searches than many shorter peers.

How film makes height flexible

Cruise's career raises a practical point for anyone comparing celebrity heights from screenshots or stills. Filmmakers routinely adjust the apparent heights of actors by placing one on a raised platform, positioning the shorter actor closer to the camera, choosing low camera angles that make a subject look larger, or staging scenes on slopes and stairs. Red-carpet photos add their own variables, such as heels, lifts in formal shoes, hairstyles and posture. None of these techniques is unique to Cruise; they are standard practice for actors of every height, including tall actors who are made to look smaller beside co-stars.

That is why comparisons on this site use listed barefoot figures rather than images. For Cruise, the listed figure of 170 cm is the right one to use when you place him beside another actor, an athlete, or yourself in the homepage's 3D comparison tool.
