Sakura Haruno's height: 161 cm in Part II

Sakura Haruno's height is better documented than most anime characters', because Masashi Kishimoto's official Naruto databooks recorded the main cast at several points in the story. The site uses her Part II figure of 161 cm (5′3½″), the height that applies to Naruto Shippuden, when she is 15 to 17 and has trained under Tsunade as a medical-nin.

Narutopedia, the Naruto fan wiki, lists her full set of heights from the databooks, and they trace her growth from a 12-year-old genin to an adult:

Era Age Height Weight
Part I (start) 12 148.5 cm (4′10½″) 35.4 kg
Part I (later) 13 150.1 cm (4′11″) 35.9 kg
Part II (Shippuden) 15–17 161 cm (5′3½″) 45.4 kg
Blank Period (The Last era) adult 165 cm (5′5″) not listed

Sakura grows about 12.5 cm from the start of Part I to the end of the main series and another 4 cm by the Blank Period, the years between the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War and Boruto. That pattern, a big jump between 12 and 15 and a smaller gain afterward, is how real adolescent growth works for girls: most of the growth spurt happens in the early teens, followed by a few years of slower gains.

Anime versus databook: Studio Pierrot's numbers

Narutopedia records two small differences between the databooks and Studio Pierrot's anime model sheets, known as settei:

  • Rounding at 12: Pierrot has consistently given Sakura's Part I height as 148 cm rather than the databook's 148.5 cm.
  • Sandals in Part II: Pierrot's settei show that her high Part II sandals add about 1 cm to her height, so in Shippuden the animated Sakura stands about 162 cm in footwear.

Neither change is large, but they show how careful Pierrot's character designers were about relative heights. Team 7 stand next to each other in thousands of shots, and keeping their heights consistent matters more in animation than in a manga, where artists can cheat proportions panel by panel.

Team 7: Sakura, Naruto, Sasuke and Kakashi

The most interesting thing about Sakura's height is how it compares with her teammates over time. In Part I she was taller than Naruto, and that reversed during the timeskip.

Character Part I Part II Blank Period
Sasuke Uchiha 150.8–153.2 cm 168 cm 182 cm
Sakura Haruno 148.5–150.1 cm 161 cm 165 cm
Naruto Uzumaki 145.3–147.5 cm 166 cm 180 cm
Kakashi Hatake 181 cm 181 cm —

At the start of Part I, the order is Sasuke, then Sakura, then Naruto. Naruto is the shortest of the three genin, about 3 cm below Sakura, and the early chapters play it up: the loud, small kid trying to impress the girl who is a little taller than him and only has eyes for Sasuke.

By Part II, Naruto has shot past her. He gains about 19 to 21 cm between Part I and Part II, compared with Sakura's 11 to 12.5 cm, and the order becomes Sasuke (168), Naruto (166), Sakura (161). That's typical of real puberty: boys usually start their growth spurt later than girls but grow more, which is why girls are often taller than boys at 11 or 12 and shorter by 16.

In the Blank Period the gap widens again. Naruto reaches 180 cm and Sasuke 182 cm, while Sakura settles at 165 cm. The adult Team 7 has the boys 15 to 17 cm taller than her. Kakashi, at 181 cm throughout, starts out towering over all three genin by about 30 cm and ends up roughly level with his grown-up students.

Sakura and Sasuke: the couple's height difference

Sakura's feelings for Sasuke drive much of her story, and the two marry after the series ends; their daughter Sarada is a lead in Boruto. Their height difference changes significantly across the story:

Era Sasuke Sakura Gap
Part I (start) 150.8 cm 148.5 cm 2.3 cm
Part II 168 cm 161 cm 7 cm
Blank Period 182 cm 165 cm 17 cm

At 12, Sasuke was barely taller than Sakura. As adults, he's 17 cm taller, slightly more than the typical gap between men and women. Research on real couples backs up how ordinary that is. Stulp and colleagues' 2013 study of British couples in the Millennium Cohort Study found a strong "male-taller" pattern, and also found that couples in which the man was more than 25 cm taller were rarer than chance would predict. A 17 cm gap sits comfortably inside the range most real couples fall into.

Sakura versus Ino, Hinata and Tsunade

Among the main kunoichi of her generation, Sakura is right in the middle. Here's the comparison using the databook heights:

Character Part I Part II Blank Period
Ino Yamanaka 149.3–151.2 cm 162.2 cm 165 cm
Sakura Haruno 148.5–150.1 cm 161 cm 165 cm
Hinata Hyuga — 160 cm —

Ino is the most important comparison, because the two are lifelong rivals and best friends. Ino is about a centimeter taller than Sakura through Part I and Part II, and the two meet at exactly 165 cm in the Blank Period. It's a nice touch: rivals who spent their childhood competing end up the same height as adults. Hinata, at 160 cm in Part II, is a centimeter shorter than Sakura.

Tsunade, Sakura's mentor and the Fifth Hokage, is listed at 163.1 cm in both parts of the series. Part II Sakura is about 2 cm shorter than her teacher, and adult Sakura about 2 cm taller. Sakura's superhuman strength, which comes from Tsunade's chakra-control techniques, has nothing to do with size; both women are of ordinary height and can still shatter the ground with a punch.

Sakura among the Konoha 11 in Shippuden

Sakura's Part II height of 161 cm also places her within her wider peer group, the young shinobi fans call the Konoha 11, plus Gaara of the Sand. Using the Part II databook figures in the site's Naruto data (Ino's comes from Narutopedia):

Character Part II height vs Sakura
Neji Hyuga 172.1 cm +11.1 cm
Rock Lee 172 cm +11 cm
Shikamaru Nara 170 cm +9 cm
Sasuke Uchiha 168 cm +7 cm
Gaara 166.1 cm +5.1 cm
Naruto Uzumaki 166 cm +5 cm
Ino Yamanaka 162.2 cm +1.2 cm
Sakura Haruno 161 cm —
Hinata Hyuga 160 cm −1 cm

The boys of her generation range from 166 to about 172 cm, and the girls cluster tightly around 160 to 162. Sakura sits second from the bottom of the full list, but only by tiny margins among the women. Kishimoto's databook numbers give the cast a realistic spread: the gap between the average boy and the average girl in this group is roughly 8 to 9 cm, a little smaller than you'd expect between Japanese adults, which fits a group of mid-teens who haven't all finished growing.

The adults around them are much taller. Kakashi is 181 cm, Might Guy 184 cm and Jiraiya 191.2 cm, so Sakura spends most of Part II looking up at her teachers, with the notable exception of Tsunade, who is only about 2 cm taller than her.

Sakura in the Boruto era

By Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Sakura is an adult, a mother and the head of Konoha's hospital work, including a children's mental health clinic according to Narutopedia's profile. The Blank Period figure of 165 cm is the closest official guide to her height in this era. Her daughter Sarada is a main character in Boruto, but the site doesn't have a height for her, so the mother-daughter comparison isn't in the table.

Adult Sakura is clearly drawn as one of the taller women among the parents' generation, close to Ino (also 165 cm in the Blank Period) and well below Naruto (180) and Sasuke (182). For a Japanese woman, 165 cm is notably tall; for an American woman, it's about average.

Weight and build across the series

The databooks record Sakura's weight as 35.4 to 35.9 kg in Part I and 45.4 kg in Part II. For a 12-year-old at 148.5 cm, 35.4 kg is a slim but ordinary weight. For a 15- or 16-year-old at 161 cm, 45.4 kg works out to a body mass index of about 17.5, which is lean, on the light end for a teenager of that height.

The numbers fit her role. Sakura is a medical-nin whose fighting style relies on precise chakra control rather than muscle mass: her famous strength comes from releasing chakra at the moment of impact. Kishimoto's Part II redesign, which Wikipedia describes as giving her a more martial-artist look, emphasizes that she has become a serious fighter, but her listed weight shows she was never drawn as bulky.

Kishimoto's design and the famous forehead

Wikipedia's account of Sakura's creation notes that Kishimoto found her difficult to draw and that he focused on her silhouette, making her costume as simple as possible compared with the more detailed outfits of the other leads. Her broad forehead became a defining feature partly by accident, as Kishimoto tended to emphasize it, and it was written into the story: as a child, she was teased about it and hid it under her bangs until Ino encouraged her not to.

For Part II, Kishimoto redesigned her clothing in a livelier, karate-suit style, and for The Last he aimed for an elegant, graceful look. Those changes track her growth from a small genin into a tall-for-Japan adult, and they're part of why fans think of "Shippuden Sakura" and "Part I Sakura" almost as different characters, even though only 11 to 12 cm separate them.

What 161 cm means for a real person

Konoha is fictional, but the series is drawn from Japanese culture, so Japanese averages make the natural comparison. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's estimates on this site's Japan average height page put Japanese women born in 1996 at an average of about 158.3 cm (5′2½″). Sakura's Part II height of 161 cm is about 2.7 cm above average, and her Blank Period 165 cm is about 7 cm above.

Comparison (women born 1996) Average height Sakura at 161 cm Sakura at 165 cm
Japan 158.3 cm +2.7 cm +6.7 cm
United States 163.5 cm −2.5 cm +1.5 cm
Netherlands 168.7 cm −7.7 cm −3.7 cm

So Part II Sakura is a little taller than the typical Japanese woman and a little shorter than the typical American one. Adult Sakura is clearly tall for Japan and about average for the U.S. The site's 5′3″ page shows how common her Part II height is.
