Naruto Uzumaki's official height: 166 cm in Part II

Naruto Uzumaki is listed on this site at 166 cm (5′5″), his height in Part II of Masashi Kishimoto's manga, the period adapted as Naruto Shippuden. That figure comes from the official character databooks, as compiled by Narutopedia, and it is the version of Naruto most people picture: the 15-to-17-year-old in the black-and-orange jumpsuit who returns to Konoha after training with Jiraiya.

Naruto is unusual among anime protagonists because his height has been published for three different stages of his life. Kishimoto's four databooks tracked the whole cast as the story moved forward, and later materials gave him an adult height as well. Put together, they show one of the biggest growth arcs in the series.

Period Age Height Weight Source
Part I (early) 12 145.3 cm (4′9″) 40.1 kg First databook, Rin no Sho (2002)
Part I (late) 13 147.5 cm (4′10″) 40.6 kg Second databook, Tō no Sho (2005)
Part II 15–17 166 cm (5′5″) 50.9 kg Third databook, Sha no Sho (2008)
Blank Period (adult) 19+ 180 cm (5′11″) Not listed Narutopedia; The Last design

Between the start of Part I and his adult appearance, Naruto grows almost 35 cm. Most of that happens in two jumps: about 18.5 cm across the timeskip into Part II, and another 14 cm between Part II and the Blank Period.

Part I: the shortest boy on Team 7

When the story opens, Naruto is a 12-year-old Academy graduate listed at 145.3 cm. The first databook, Rin no Sho, was published in Japan on July 9, 2002 and covers chapters 1 to 119; the second databook updated his height to 147.5 cm. Either way, he was the smallest member of his team.

Team 7 (Part I) Height Difference vs Naruto (145.3 cm)
Naruto Uzumaki 145.3–147.5 cm —
Sakura Haruno 148.5–150.1 cm about +3 cm
Sasuke Uchiha 150.8–153.2 cm about +5.5 cm
Kakashi Hatake 181 cm +35.7 cm

The weights tell the same story. Part I Naruto weighs 40.1 to 40.6 kg, while Sasuke is listed at 42.2 to 43.5 kg, so the rival was both taller and heavier. Sakura, at 35.4 to 35.9 kg, was the lightest of the three despite being taller than Naruto.

Being shorter than both teammates fits Naruto's role in Part I: the loud underdog nobody takes seriously, chasing a rival who is better at everything, including being taller. Narutopedia's trivia notes that Naruto was initially the shortest of the "Konoha 11," the group of young ninja at the heart of the series.

There is one curiosity from the anime. Narutopedia notes that Studio Pierrot's model sheet for Naruto's Sexy Technique transformation, from when he had just become a genin, lists that form at 160 cm. That is a transformed body, not Naruto himself, and it is not a databook figure.

How Part I Naruto compares with real 12-year-olds

Japan's Ministry of Education measures hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren every year in its School Health Statistics Survey. In the fiscal 2025 results, the average 12-year-old Japanese boy was 153.8 cm and the average 13-year-old was 161.1 cm. At 145.3 cm, Part I Naruto was about 8.5 cm below the average boy his age, and his 147.5 cm at 13 was roughly 13.6 cm below. By real-world standards he was a small kid, which matches how the manga draws him.

Part II: 166 cm after the timeskip

The two-and-a-half-year timeskip changed Naruto's proportions dramatically. The third databook, Sha no Sho, released in Japan on September 9, 2008 and in English on January 10, 2012, lists him at 166 cm and 50.9 kg. That is a gain of 18.5 cm and about 10 kg from his last Part I profile.

Part II cast Height Difference vs Naruto (166 cm)
Jiraiya 191.2 cm +25.2 cm
Kakashi Hatake 181 cm +15 cm
Itachi Uchiha 178 cm +12 cm
Sasuke Uchiha 168 cm +2 cm
Gaara 166.1 cm +0.1 cm
Naruto Uzumaki 166 cm —
Tsunade 163.1 cm −2.9 cm
Sakura Haruno 161 cm −5 cm
Hinata Hyuga 160 cm −6 cm

Two details stand out. First, Naruto passes Sakura during the timeskip and ends up 5 cm taller than her, but Sasuke is still 2 cm ahead. Second, Naruto and Gaara, the two jinchūriki whose childhoods mirror each other so closely, are essentially identical in height: 166 cm against 166.1 cm. Their Part II weights are identical too, at 50.9 kg each.

Compared with real teenagers, Part II Naruto is still on the short side. The MEXT survey's average for a 16-year-old Japanese boy is 169.9 cm, about 4 cm more than Naruto's 166 cm.

Adult Naruto: 180 cm in the Blank Period

Naruto's final growth spurt was a deliberate design choice. Wikipedia's summary of the character notes that for The Last: Naruto the Movie (2014) and the final episodes of Naruto Shippuden, he was given a young adult look with shorter hair and noticeably greater height than his Part II design. Narutopedia lists that Blank Period height as 180 cm.

Kishimoto did not land on 180 cm immediately. According to Narutopedia, his concept art for The Last showed Naruto at 170 cm, then 173 cm, and finally 180 cm. Each revision made the grown-up Naruto taller, as if the artist wanted the adult hero to finally match the scale of his ambitions.

Adults Height Difference vs adult Naruto (180 cm)
Sasuke Uchiha (Blank Period) 182 cm +2 cm
Kakashi Hatake 181 cm +1 cm
Naruto Uzumaki (Blank Period) 180 cm —
Minato Namikaze (father) 179.2 cm −0.8 cm
Kushina Uzumaki (mother) 165 cm −15 cm
Sakura Haruno (Blank Period) 165 cm −15 cm

At 180 cm, adult Naruto is a hair taller than his father, the Fourth Hokage, whose databook height is 179.2 cm, and 15 cm taller than his mother Kushina. Narutopedia also notes that while Naruto started as the shortest of the Konoha 11, he ended up the second tallest, behind only Shino Aburame.

Like father, like son: Naruto and Boruto at the same age

The sequel series gives a neat way to check Naruto's childhood height against the next generation. Narutopedia lists his son Boruto at 110 to 122 cm as a five-year-old in the Blank Period, and at 145 to 163 cm across the New Era, when he is 12 to 15.

Character at about 12 Height Source
Naruto Uzumaki (Part I) 145.3 cm First databook
Boruto Uzumaki (New Era, start) 145 cm Narutopedia
Sarada Uchiha (New Era) 147 cm Narutopedia
Sasuke Uchiha (Part I) 150.8 cm First databook

At the start of their stories, father and son are almost exactly the same height: 145.3 cm for Naruto and 145 cm for Boruto. Sarada, Sasuke's daughter, is listed at 147 cm, so she is slightly taller than Boruto, just as her father was slightly taller than Naruto at the same age. The pattern repeats across a generation, and in both cases the Uchiha child starts out ahead.

The upper end of Boruto's range, 163 cm, comes from later in the New Era, when he is about 15. That is still 3 cm short of Naruto's 166 cm Part II figure, though the two periods do not line up exactly by age, so the comparison is approximate.

None of these children's numbers come from the four original databooks, which ended with Jin no Sho in 2014, before Boruto began. Treat them as less firmly sourced than Naruto's own Part I and Part II figures.

Why this site uses 166 cm

Choosing one number for a character who grows 35 cm on the page is a judgment call. This site uses the Part II figure because:

  • It is the most widely recognized version of Naruto, covering the bulk of Naruto Shippuden and the manga's final arcs.
  • It comes directly from an official databook, Sha no Sho, with an English edition.
  • The 180 cm Blank Period figure applies to an adult Naruto who mostly appears in The Last and Boruto, a different stage of the character.

If you want to compare adult Hokage Naruto instead, use 180 cm in the height comparison tool and label it as his Blank Period height.

How Naruto's size fits his story

Kishimoto never wrote an essay on Naruto's height, but the published numbers line up neatly with his character arc. In Part I he is the shortest boy on his team and well below the real-world average for his age, a visual shorthand for the outcast nobody believes in. After the timeskip, he catches up with his peers but still trails his rival Sasuke by 2 cm. As an adult Hokage, he finally stands level with the giants of his past, slightly taller than his father and within a couple of centimeters of Kakashi and Sasuke.

The rivalry with Sasuke is the clearest example. At every stage where both have official heights, Sasuke is slightly taller: by about 5 cm in Part I, by 2 cm in Part II, and by 2 cm as adults. The gap never closes, but it shrinks, which is a quiet visual echo of a rivalry that ends in mutual respect rather than one-sided victory.

What Naruto's heights mean in real-world terms

Converted, 166 cm is 65.4 inches, or about 5′5″. You can see the full conversion and real people at that mark on the 166 cm page. His adult height of 180 cm is about 5′11″.

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, the research network whose national averages this site uses, estimates the average adult Japanese man born in 1996 at 170.8 cm. That puts Part II Naruto about 5 cm below the adult average, which makes sense for a teenager who still has growing to do, and adult Naruto about 9 cm above it. On the average height in Japan page you can see how Japanese men's heights climbed over the 20th century.

Comparing Naruto yourself

Because Naruto has three official heights, the most interesting comparisons put different versions of him side by side. Try these in the main tool or the height difference calculator:

  • Part I Naruto vs adult Naruto: 145.3 cm against 180 cm, a 34.7 cm difference.
  • Naruto vs Sasuke: 2 cm in Part II and again as adults.
  • Naruto vs Gaara: a near-perfect match at 166 cm.
  • Adult Naruto vs Minato: the son finally edges past his father by 0.8 cm.
