Kakashi Hatake's official height: 181 cm

Kakashi Hatake, the Copy Ninja who leads Team 7 in Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto, is listed at 181 cm (5′11″). Unlike his students, who were measured again and again as they grew, Kakashi has just one official height. He is already an adult jōnin of 26 when the story begins, and the databooks, as compiled by Narutopedia, give the same 181 cm figure across the whole series.

The databooks add a weight of 67.5 kg (about 149 lb) and blood type O. At 181 cm and 67.5 kg, his body mass index is about 20.6, a lean, athletic build that fits a ninja who relies on speed, technique and the borrowed Sharingan rather than brute force.

Because Kakashi's height never changes, it works as a fixed reference point for the rest of Team 7. You can measure his students' growth against him: in Part I he towers over all three of them by 28 cm or more, and by the adult era Naruto and Sasuke have essentially caught him.

Kakashi next to Team 7 across the series

Student Part I Part II Adult (Blank Period)
Naruto Uzumaki 145.3–147.5 cm 166 cm 180 cm
Sasuke Uchiha 150.8–153.2 cm 168 cm 182 cm
Sakura Haruno 148.5–150.1 cm 161 cm 165 cm
Sai — 172.1 cm 176 cm
Kakashi (constant) 181 cm 181 cm 181 cm

In Part I, the gap is enormous. Kakashi stands 35.7 cm above Naruto at the start of the series, which is roughly the height difference between an adult man and a nine-year-old. That gap is part of why the early bell test, in which the three genin fail to grab two bells from their teacher, plays so well: they are small children chasing a grown man who reads a novel while dodging them.

By Part II, the gap narrows to 13 cm with Sasuke, 15 cm with Naruto and 20 cm with Sakura. Sai, who joins the renamed Team Kakashi after the timeskip, is the closest at 172.1 cm, still about 9 cm shorter.

By adulthood, Kakashi's students have caught up. Adult Naruto, at 180 cm, is 1 cm shorter than Kakashi; adult Sasuke, at 182 cm, is 1 cm taller. Sakura, at 165 cm, remains 16 cm below him. The fact that the two boys finish within a centimeter of their teacher, one on each side, is a tidy visual summary of the series: the students grow up to stand level with the man who trained them.

Kakashi and his rival Might Guy

Kakashi's self-declared "eternal rival," Might Guy, is listed at 184 cm and 76 kg. Guy is 3 cm taller and 8.5 kg heavier than Kakashi, and the numbers suit the contrast between them. Guy is a taijutsu specialist who trains his body to the limit; Kakashi is a technique specialist who copies other people's jutsu.

Jōnin of Kakashi's generation Height Difference vs Kakashi
Asuma Sarutobi 190.8 cm +9.8 cm
Might Guy 184 cm +3 cm
Kakashi Hatake 181 cm —
Yamato 178 cm −3 cm
Iruka Umino 178 cm −3 cm
Kurenai Yūhi 169.1 cm −11.9 cm

Among the jōnin teachers of the Konoha 11, Kakashi sits in the middle. Asuma Sarutobi, who leads Team 10, is the tallest at 190.8 cm, nearly 10 cm above Kakashi. Kurenai, who leads Team 8, is about 12 cm shorter. Yamato, who fills in as Team Kakashi's leader in Part II, and Iruka, Naruto's Academy teacher, are both listed at 178 cm.

Kakashi's family and his own teachers

Kakashi's father, Sakumo Hatake, known as the White Fang of the Leaf, is listed at exactly 181 cm, the same as his son, with a weight of 65.7 kg. Father and son share not only a height but also silver hair and a reputation as Konoha prodigies.

His own teacher, Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, is listed at 179.2 cm, so the adult Kakashi ended up 1.8 cm taller than his sensei. The parallel with Team 7 is neat: Kakashi surpassed his teacher by a little, and his students in turn finish level with him.

Connection Height Difference vs Kakashi
Jiraiya (Minato's teacher) 191.2 cm +10.2 cm
Sakumo Hatake (father) 181 cm Same
Obito Uchiha (adult, Part II) 175–182 cm −6 to +1 cm
Minato Namikaze (teacher) 179.2 cm −1.8 cm
Obito Uchiha (age 13, Kakashi Gaiden) 154.2 cm —
Rin Nohara (teammate) 143 cm —

Obito, Kakashi's childhood teammate who later becomes one of the series' central antagonists, has a range rather than a single adult height. Narutopedia lists his Part II height as 175 to 182 cm, which means he may be slightly shorter than Kakashi or a centimeter taller depending on which figure you take. As a 13-year-old in Kakashi Gaiden, he was 154.2 cm. Rin Nohara, the third member of Team Minato, is listed at 143 cm.

Kakashi among the Hokage

After the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kakashi becomes Konoha's Sixth Hokage, the leader his student Naruto later succeeds. Every Hokage from the First to the Seventh has an official height, which makes it easy to see where he fits in the line.

Hokage Height Difference vs Kakashi
First: Hashirama Senju 185.1 cm +4.1 cm
Second: Tobirama Senju 182.3 cm +1.3 cm
Sixth: Kakashi Hatake 181 cm —
Seventh: Naruto Uzumaki (adult) 180 cm −1 cm
Fourth: Minato Namikaze 179.2 cm −1.8 cm
Third: Hiruzen Sarutobi 163.1 cm −17.9 cm
Fifth: Tsunade 163.1 cm −17.9 cm

Kakashi is the third-tallest Hokage, behind only the two Senju brothers who founded the village. The Third and Fifth Hokage are both listed at 163.1 cm, so the office has been held by people across a 22 cm range. The three most recent male Hokage, Minato, Kakashi and Naruto, sit within 1.8 cm of one another, which makes the Fourth-to-Seventh succession look remarkably uniform in a group portrait.

The weights follow a similar pattern. Hashirama is listed at 74 kg and Tobirama at 70.5 kg, both a little heavier than Kakashi's 67.5 kg, while Minato, at 66.1 kg, is slightly lighter. Kakashi is lean even by the standards of a job that seems to attract slim, tall ninja.

Kakashi's successor is also his former student, and the two are nearly identical in height as adults. When Naruto takes over the job, the new Hokage is just 1 cm shorter than the old one.

How tall was Kakashi as a child?

No databook gives Kakashi a height at any age other than adulthood. However, Narutopedia records the heights used in Studio Pierrot's anime model sheets, the reference drawings animators work from, and they trace his growth in unusual detail:

Stage (anime model sheets) Height
Entering the Academy 124 cm
Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Lost Tower (age 10 flashback) 140 cm
Kakashi Gaiden (age 13) 148 cm
Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's attack 168 cm
Ten-year flashback in Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow 178 cm
Adult (databook) 181 cm

These model-sheet figures are not canon in the way databook profiles are, but they show the animators treating Kakashi as a smallish child who grew fast in his early teens. One interesting comparison: the model sheets put him at 148 cm during Kakashi Gaiden, while the databook lists his teammate Obito at 154.2 cm at the same age. As children, Obito was the taller of the two rivals; as adults, Kakashi is equal or taller.

For context, Japan's Ministry of Education measured the average 13-year-old boy at 161.1 cm in its fiscal 2025 School Health Statistics Survey. If the animators' 148 cm is right, Kakashi was a small 13-year-old, about 13 cm below today's average, even though he had already been promoted to jōnin.

How Kakashi's size fits his design

According to Wikipedia's summary of the character's creation, Kishimoto originally imagined Kakashi as a samurai-like figure and planned to introduce him in the manga's second chapter, before the rest of Team 7. He later delayed the debut to develop the team together, and softened the initially harsh teacher into a laid-back, generous one. Kishimoto also found the design challenging because the mask and forehead protector cover most of Kakashi's face, making it hard to show emotion.

Kishimoto chose the name Kakashi, meaning "scarecrow," from a shortlist that included words for hoe, scythe, peony and nettle tree. Combined with his surname, Hatake ("field"), the name means "scarecrow in the field," and scarecrows sometimes appear in the background of his scenes. A scarecrow is tall, thin and watchful, which is a fair description of a 181 cm, 67.5 kg ninja who spends a lot of time slouching with a book.

Two design features change how tall Kakashi looks in panels:

  • His hair. Kakashi's silver hair sweeps up and to one side, often adding visible height above his head. Charts that measure to the top of the hair will overstate him.
  • His posture. He is frequently drawn slouching with his hands in his pockets, which reduces his apparent height. In many scenes he looks closer to Guy's 184 cm or below his own 181 cm depending on how he stands.

What 181 cm means in real-world terms

Converted, 181 cm is 71.3 inches, or just over 5′11″. That is tall for a Japanese man. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, whose national averages this site uses, estimates adult Japanese men born in 1996 at 170.8 cm, so Kakashi stands about 10 cm above the average. You can see the full trend on the average height in Japan page.

Comparison Height Difference vs Kakashi
Average Japanese man (NCD-RisC, 1996 cohort) 170.8 cm +10.2 cm
Average US man (NCD-RisC, 1996 cohort) 177.1 cm +3.9 cm
Timothée Chalamet 178 cm +3 cm

In the United States, Kakashi would be about 4 cm above the average man, comfortably tall but not unusual. A useful real-world reference is Timothée Chalamet, listed at 178 cm on this site, who would stand 3 cm below the Copy Ninja.
