For a man

<5thpercentile

5′3″ is below the 5th percentile for US men: shorter than about 95% of US adult men. It is 15.1 cm (5.9 in) shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Next to an average man, the top of the head reaches about his mouth.

For a woman

~44thpercentile

5′3″ is around the 44th percentile for US women: taller than about 44% of US adult women. It is 1.2 cm (0.5 in) shorter than the average US woman (161.2 cm).

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

How 5′3″ converts to centimeters

Five feet three inches is 63 inches in total, because 5 × 12 = 60 and 60 + 3 = 63. Multiply by 2.54 and you get 160.02 cm, or 1.60 m. The answer is exact, not an approximation: according to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, the inch has been defined as exactly 0.0254 meters since an international agreement announced in Federal Register Notice 59-5442 in 1959. Because 2.54 has only two decimal places, every whole-inch height lands on a centimeter value with at most two decimals.

The two hundredths of a centimeter are the reason 5′3″ and 160 cm are so often treated as the same height. They are 0.2 millimeters apart, far less than the change in your own stature between morning and afternoon. If a form asks for whole centimeters, 160 is the right entry; if someone gives you 160 cm, you can say 5′3″ without any meaningful loss. That makes 5′3″ one of the few imperial heights with a clean metric twin, and you can read more about the metric side on the 160 cm page.

Unit 5′3″ expressed as
Centimeters 160.02 cm
Meters 1.6002 m
Millimeters 1,600.2 mm
Total inches 63 in
Decimal feet 5.25 ft
Half an inch either side 158.75 cm (5′2½″) to 161.29 cm (5′3½″)

A common slip is to type "5.3 feet" into a calculator. That is five feet plus three tenths of a foot, or 5′3.6″ (161.5 cm). The decimal-foot equivalent of 5′3″ is 5.25 ft, because three inches is a quarter of a foot.

Where 5′3″ falls among American adults

The most recent national measurements come from the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for August 2021 to August 2023, published in 2025 by the National Center for Health Statistics. Trained examiners measured standing height on thousands of adults, and the report tabulates percentiles by sex and age group. Interpolating between those percentiles places 5′3″ as follows:

Group (NHANES 2021–2023) Median height Where 5′3″ (160.0 cm) falls
Women 20 and over 161.2 cm about 44th percentile
Women 20–29 163.3 cm about 33rd percentile
Women 40–49 162.0 cm about 40th percentile
Women 60–69 160.4 cm about 48th percentile
Women 70–79 157.9 cm about 62nd percentile
Men 20 and over 175.2 cm below the 5th percentile (5th = 162.2 cm)
Men 80 and over 169.9 cm about 10th percentile

For women the picture is "a little below the middle." The median American woman measured 161.2 cm, so a woman of 5′3″ stands just over a centimeter shorter than the typical woman, a gap nobody notices in daily life. What shifts is the age group. Among women in their twenties, whose median is 163.3 cm, 5′3″ falls around the 33rd percentile. Among women in their seventies, it sits above the median. Part of that is the gradual height loss that comes with age, and part is that older cohorts grew up when average heights were lower. A cross-sectional survey like NHANES cannot separate those two effects.

For men, 5′3″ is rare. The 5th percentile for American men aged 20 and over was 162.2 cm, so a 5′3″ man is shorter than roughly 95 in 100 of his peers. Only among men aged 80 and over, whose 5th percentile is 158.3 cm, does 5′3″ rise to about the 10th percentile. The height percentile calculator gives the same estimate for any age band if you want to check a specific case.

Growing into 5′3″: what the CDC growth charts show

Parents often meet 5′3″ as a milestone on a child's chart. The CDC 2000 growth charts, which remain the US reference for ages 2 to 20, publish smoothed stature percentiles by month of age. Reading those curves for 160 cm gives some useful benchmarks:

  • Median boy: reaches 160 cm at about 13 years 6 months, and keeps going; the median at age 20 is about 176.8 cm.
  • Median girl: reaches 160 cm at about 13 years 11 months; the median at age 20 is about 163.3 cm, so most girls who hit 5′3″ add only another inch or so.
  • Tall children (95th percentile): girls reach 5′3″ at roughly 11½ and boys at about 11¾.
  • Shorter boys (5th percentile): reach 5′3″ at about 16 years 11 months.

At age 20 on the same charts, 5′3″ is about the 30th percentile for young women and around the 1st percentile for young men. These are reference curves, not targets. A child tracking along a lower percentile can be perfectly healthy, and the right person to interpret an individual chart is a pediatrician. The site's height predictor explains how adult-height predictions are made and how uncertain they are.

5′3″ around the world

The global context changes the meaning of 5′3″ dramatically. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) pooled 1,472 population-based studies with height measurements on more than 18.6 million people to estimate mean adult height by birth cohort in 200 countries. Its estimates for people born in 1996, which this site uses on every country page, put several national averages within a couple of centimeters of 5′3″:

Country (born 1996) Average man Average woman
Laos 160.5 cm 151.3 cm
Philippines 163.2 cm 149.6 cm
Guatemala 163.4 cm 149.4 cm
Japan 170.8 cm 158.3 cm
China 171.8 cm 159.7 cm
Brazil 173.6 cm 160.9 cm
United States 177.1 cm 163.5 cm

So a 5′3″ man would be close to average in Laos and only a few centimeters short in the Philippines or Guatemala, while a 5′3″ woman is near the national average in China, Brazil and Iran (159.7 cm) and taller than the average woman in Japan. The same NCD-RisC study notes that Guatemalan women born in 1896 averaged just 140.3 cm, the shortest group in its century of data, which is a reminder that "short" has always been relative to time and place. The average height hub maps every country.

Famous people listed at 5′3″

This site's database lists dozens of public figures at 160 cm, the metric twin of 5′3″. Among those with their own pages are rappers Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat, and Canadian singer Tory Lanez, all listed at 160 cm. Others in the catalog at the same listed height include Scarlett Johansson, Cardi B, Jodie Foster, Prince and Martin Scorsese. Listed heights for celebrities come from published profiles and interviews, and the site records a source for each one.

The shortest player in NBA history

The most remarkable 5′3″ career belongs to Muggsy Bogues. Listed at 5′3″ (1.60 m), he is the shortest player ever to appear in the NBA, and he lasted 14 seasons at point guard, ten of them with the Charlotte Hornets. As a rookie with the Washington Bullets he shared a roster with Manute Bol, who stood 7′7″, a 28-inch gap between the tallest and shortest players in the league at the time. According to the league's list of its shortest players, only 27 men listed at 5′9″ or below have ever played in the NBA, and every one of them was a point guard.

Basketball has a second 5′3″ footnote. The shortest person ever to appear in the old American Basketball Association was Penny Ann Early, a 5′3″ jockey who took part in a single play for the Kentucky Colonels in 1969 as a publicity stunt.

Jobs and activities where 5′3″ matters

Height rules have mostly disappeared from hiring, but a few fields still have physical ranges, and 5′3″ sits on the favorable side of several.

Flight attendants. Airlines generally set height or reach requirements so crew can reach overhead safety equipment. A typical acceptable range runs from above 152 cm (5′0″) to below 185 cm, and regional carriers with low cabin ceilings may set tighter limits. A 5′3″ applicant clears the usual minimum comfortably. Historically the rules were far stricter: one early airline description of its hostesses called for heights between 5′0″ and 5′4″, and a later recruitment notice asked for 5′2″ to 5′9″. Those requirements, along with weight and marriage rules, were gradually dismantled after equal-opportunity complaints from the late 1960s onward.

Horse racing. There is no formal height limit for jockeys, but because riders must make low racing weights, flat jockeys typically stand between about 4′10″ (147 cm) and 5′7″ (170 cm). At 5′3″ you would be in the middle of that range, though weight, not height, is the real constraint. Jump jockeys tend to be taller.

Clothing. In US fashion sizing, petite lines are designed for women about 5′4″ (163 cm) and under, with shorter sleeves, inseams and torso lengths. The category traces back to the 1940s, when designer Hannah Troy studied measurements from women who had served in the Second World War and found that only 8% fit standard proportions. A woman of 5′3″ will usually find petite inseams closer to her leg length than regular ones, though proportions vary, so trying both is sensible.

How 5′3″ compares with nearby heights

Small differences in height are easier to judge side by side. Each inch is 2.54 cm, so 5′3″ sits:

  • 2.54 cm above 5′2″ (157.48 cm) and 2.54 cm below 5′4″ (162.56 cm), the conventional upper edge of petite sizing.
  • 15.08 cm below the median American man (175.2 cm), so a 5′3″ woman standing next to an average man reaches roughly his mouth or chin.
  • 17.78 cm (7 inches) below 5′10″, a pairing explored on the 5′3″ vs 5′10″ page.

For any other gap, the height difference calculator shows two figures to scale and says where one person's head reaches on the other.

Measuring yourself at 5′3″ accurately

If you are deciding between 5′2½″ and 5′3½″, a few millimeters matter, and measurement technique dominates. Stand barefoot on a hard floor with heels, buttocks and shoulder blades against a wall, look straight ahead, and lower a hardback book flat onto the crown of your head; mark the underside and measure to the floor. Measure in the morning and evening and you will notice that people are tallest soon after getting up. A 1997 study at a Southampton school found children lost around half a centimeter of stature over a morning, with little further change after about six hours out of bed. For forms, record the measurement taken in the middle of the day, and round to the nearest centimeter or half inch.

It also pays to measure rather than recall. Researchers working with the UK Millennium Cohort Study, which relied on parents' self-reported heights, noted that earlier validation studies found self-reports highly reliable but slightly inflated, with men overstating by about 1.2 cm and women by about 0.6 cm on average, and the bias growing after age fifty. Half a centimeter is enough to move a 5′2¾″ person to a rounded 5′3″, so if the number matters for a medical form, a sports registration or a visa, a measured value is worth the two minutes it takes.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5′3″ petite for a woman?

Yes. Petite clothing in the US is cut for women about 5′4″ (163 cm) and under, so a 5′3″ woman is squarely in the petite range, although whether petite cuts fit also depends on torso and leg proportions.

Has anyone 5′3″ played in the NBA?

Yes. Muggsy Bogues, listed at 5′3″ (160 cm), is the shortest player in NBA history and played 14 seasons at point guard, most famously with the Charlotte Hornets.

At what age do kids usually reach 5′3″?

On the CDC 2000 growth charts, the median boy reaches 160 cm at about 13½ and the median girl at about 14. A girl on the 95th percentile gets there at about 11½.

Is 5′3″ shorter than the average American woman?

Slightly. The median US woman aged 20 and over measured 161.2 cm in NHANES 2021–2023, about 1.2 cm (half an inch) taller than 5′3″. Among women aged 20 to 29, 5′3″ sits nearer the 33rd percentile.

Can a 5′3″ person be a flight attendant?

Usually. Most airlines set height or reach limits so crew can reach overhead safety equipment, typically somewhere above 152 cm (5′0″) and below 185 cm. A 5′3″ applicant clears the common minimum, though individual airlines set their own rules.

Which countries have average men around 5′3″?

In NCD-RisC estimates for people born in 1996, men in Laos averaged 160.5 cm, almost exactly 5′3″, and men in the Philippines and Guatemala averaged about 163 cm.
