Jason Momoa's height: 6′5″ by his own account
Jason Momoa is listed on this site at 195.6 cm (6′5″), the height he has used to describe himself. The best-documented instance is a 2011 interview with Access Hollywood, later quoted by Insider, in which he explained how his size played into his early casting. Describing auditions for roles like Khal Drogo and Conan, he characterized himself as "a big 6'5" Hawaiian, screaming at the top of his lungs," and said casting directors found that intimidating in a way that worked in his favor.
Actors are not measured for any official register, so height figures in Hollywood rest on self-reports, studio materials and press coverage. Some outlets and fan databases put Momoa at 6′4″ (193 cm) instead. That one-inch spread is typical for a celebrity, and since his own statement is the clearest primary evidence, this site uses 6′5″ while noting the alternative.
| Source | Height | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Momoa, Access Hollywood (2011), quoted by Insider | 6′5″ (195.6 cm) | Self-description in interview |
| Various outlets and fan databases | 6′4″ (193 cm) | Common alternative listing |
| Site data | 195.6 cm | Follows his own figure |
Either number makes him one of the tallest leading men working in Hollywood. At 6′4″ or 6′5″, he is taller than nearly every co-star he has had in major franchises, a fact that has shaped the kinds of characters he has played for 25 years.
How size shaped a career of warriors and kings
Momoa's filmography is unusually consistent in one respect: he is almost always cast as the physically dominant figure in the room. His first job was as lifeguard Jason Ioane on Baywatch Hawaii (1999–2001), where he appeared in 44 episodes. Insider reports that he later admitted, in a 2018 Square Mile interview, that he had made up a modeling title to help land that role.
From there the roles got bigger in every sense:
- Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis (2005–2009). A warrior from a destroyed world, written as the toughest fighter on the team.
- Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones (2011–2012). A Dothraki warlord who barely speaks in English. Momoa performed a haka in his audition, and his height and physicality defined the character.
- Conan in Conan the Barbarian (2011). A role Arnold Schwarzenegger had made famous in 1982.
- Arthur Curry in the DC films (2016–2023). Aquaman, first in Batman v Superman, then Justice League (2017), Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
- Baba Voss in See (2019–2022). A warrior chief in a world where humanity has lost its sight.
- Duncan Idaho in Dune (2021). A swordmaster of House Atreides.
- Dante Reyes in Fast X (2023). The franchise's flamboyant villain.
- Ka'iana in Chief of War (2025). A real Native Hawaiian warrior chief, in an Apple TV+ series Momoa co-created.
- Lobo in Supergirl (2026). A hulking DC bounty hunter.
His 2011 Access Hollywood comments make the link explicit: he saw his size and presence as a casting asset, not just a physical fact. That pattern continued even in lighter fare such as A Minecraft Movie (2025), where his character's oversized bravado is part of the comedy.
Momoa next to his co-stars
Because he towers over most of his scene partners, Momoa's films are a good showcase of how much a height difference reads on screen. The table uses heights stored on this site.
| Co-star (project) | Height (site data) | Difference from Momoa |
|---|---|---|
| Dwayne Johnson (fellow action lead) | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | 0 cm |
| Ben Affleck (Justice League) | 192 cm (6′3.5″) | −3.6 cm |
| Stellan Skarsgård (Dune) | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | −5.1 cm |
| John Cena (Fast X) | 185 cm (6′1″) | −10.6 cm |
| Henry Cavill (Justice League) | 185 cm (6′1″) | −10.6 cm |
| Patrick Wilson (Aquaman) | 184 cm (6′0″) | −11.6 cm |
| Vin Diesel (Fast X) | 182 cm (6′0″) | −13.6 cm |
| Nicole Kidman (Aquaman) | 180 cm (5′11″) | −15.6 cm |
| Gal Gadot (Justice League) | 178 cm (5′10″) | −17.6 cm |
| Timothée Chalamet (Dune) | 178 cm (5′10″) | −17.6 cm |
| Amber Heard (Aquaman) | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | −25.4 cm |
| Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) | 157 cm (5′2″) | −38.6 cm |
Justice League: the tallest hero on the team
In Justice League, the core cast already included two tall men in Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Momoa was still the tallest of the group by the site's listings, about 3.6 cm taller than Affleck and more than 10 cm taller than Cavill. Costume added to the effect: the Motion Picture Association's look at the film's wardrobe noted that the Aquaman and Batman suits were notably heavy, which affected how the two actors moved in action scenes.
Aquaman: playing the son of a 5′11″ queen
In Aquaman (2018), Nicole Kidman played Atlanna, Arthur Curry's mother. Kidman is tall for an actress at 180 cm, yet still about 15.6 cm shorter than Momoa, so their scenes inverted the usual parent-child framing. Amber Heard, as Mera, was about 25 cm shorter.
Game of Thrones: Drogo and Daenerys
The most famous height gap of his career is with Emilia Clarke. At 157 cm, Clarke is roughly 38.6 cm (15 inches) shorter than Momoa. In the show's first season, that contrast reinforced the story's power dynamic between the warlord and the young exile, and few on-screen couples of the decade had a larger height difference.
Dune: the swordmaster and the young duke
In Dune, Momoa's Duncan Idaho is a mentor figure to Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides. The roughly 17.6 cm gap between them made the older warrior visibly protective of the young heir in their scenes together. He is set to return in Dune: Part Three.
You can reproduce any of these pairings in the height difference calculator.
Among Hollywood's tallest leading men
Momoa belongs to a small group of current action stars who stand 6′3″ or taller. Comparing him with that group, using the heights stored on this site, shows how rare his size is even among men cast specifically for their physicality.
| Actor | Height (site data) | Difference from Momoa |
|---|---|---|
| Vince Vaughn | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | 0 cm |
| Dwayne Johnson | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | 0 cm |
| Liam Neeson | 193 cm (6′4″) | −2.6 cm |
| Dave Bautista | 193 cm (6′4″) | −2.6 cm |
| Chris Hemsworth | 191 cm (6′3″) | −4.6 cm |
| Hugh Jackman | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | −5.1 cm |
| Idris Elba | 189 cm (6′2″) | −6.6 cm |
| Arnold Schwarzenegger | 188 cm (6′2″) | −7.6 cm |
| Keanu Reeves | 186 cm (6′1″) | −9.6 cm |
The Schwarzenegger comparison is the most interesting one historically. Arnold defined Conan for a generation in 1982, and when Momoa took the role in 2011 he was about 7.6 cm taller than his predecessor by these listings, though Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding mass made him look broader. Chris Hemsworth, the other comic-book demigod of the 2010s as Thor, stands about 4.6 cm shorter. Among actors who regularly headline action franchises, only Dwayne Johnson and Vince Vaughn match Momoa's listed height on this site, which helps explain why directors so often use him as the largest presence in an ensemble.
Family, heritage and personal life
Momoa was born on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu. His father is Native Hawaiian, and his mother has German, Irish and Pawnee ancestry. After his parents divorced when he was an infant, he was raised by his mother in Iowa, in the Norwalk area, before returning to Hawaii for college. He has spoken often about his Hawaiian identity, telling CNN in 2019 that Hawaii is his home and his nationality, and Chief of War was described by Apple and ABC News as a passion project rooted in Hawaiian history.
That heritage has shown up on screen and off. Insider recounts that at a 2018 screening of Aquaman in Hawaii he led a haka, the same Polynesian ceremonial challenge he had performed in his Game of Thrones audition years earlier. On Stargate Atlantis, his character's heavy dreadlocks were his own hair until he cut them between the fourth and fifth seasons, after which the production built him a wig that he found just as heavy. Details like these help explain why his screen persona has always been tied to physical presence, of which height is only one part.
He married actress Lisa Bonet in 2017; the couple, together since the mid-2000s, announced their separation in 2022, and their divorce was finalized in 2024. They have two children, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf. Bonet is listed at 157 cm on this site, making her about 38.6 cm shorter than Momoa. Reliable sources do not publish the heights of his children or his parents, so this page does not speculate about them.
Build and physical preparation
Momoa does not have an official listed weight, so this page does not give one. What is documented is how often his roles demanded bulk. For Khal Drogo, Insider reports he bulked up partly on a diet that included Guinness and pizza while filming in Belfast. For Aquaman, the comic-book character, traditionally drawn as a clean-cut blond, was reimagined on screen with long hair, a beard and tattoos that matched Momoa's own look. A heavy frame amplifies the perception of height, so the bulk his roles demanded made his natural size read even larger on screen.
Outside acting, he is an avid rock climber with his own line of climbing products from the company So iLL, and he started a canned water company, Mananalu, in April 2019, according to Insider.
Compared with the average American man
Momoa was born in 1979, so the closest NCD-RisC birth cohort on this site is 1976. American men of that cohort average 177.5 cm (about 5′10″). At 195.6 cm, Momoa is about 18 cm (7 inches) taller than his average peer.
| Benchmark | Height | Momoa's difference |
|---|---|---|
| US men, 1976 birth cohort (NCD-RisC) | 177.5 cm | +18.1 cm |
| US men, 1996 birth cohort (NCD-RisC) | 177.1 cm | +18.5 cm |
| US women, 1976 birth cohort (NCD-RisC) | 164.0 cm | +31.6 cm |
In everyday terms, 6′5″ is well beyond the top of the published US distribution. In the CDC's NHANES survey for August 2021 to August 2023, the 95th percentile for American men aged 40 to 49 is 189.9 cm, so Momoa is more than 5 cm above even that cutoff, placing him above the top 5 percent of men his age in that survey. The average height in the United States page explains how these cohort averages are built, and the height percentile calculator gives an exact figure for any height.
The 6′4″ versus 6′5″ question
Because Momoa's height is so central to his screen image, people often ask which figure is right. A few points help put the debate in perspective:
- Self-reports come with rounding. Momoa's 6′5″ comes from his own description in a 2011 Access Hollywood interview, quoted by Insider, not from a measurement.
- Databases disagree too. Wikidata currently records his height as 1.98 m, about 2.5 cm above the 6′5″ (195.6 cm) this site uses, which shows how loosely celebrity heights are recorded.
- Footwear. Red-carpet photos are taken in shoes, so they cannot settle a one-inch question.
- Co-star listings vary too. Comparisons in photos depend on everyone else's height being accurate, and celebrity listings are rarely measured.
Given all that, the fairest summary is that Momoa is around 193 to 198 cm, with his own 6′5″ figure at the upper end. Either way he is taller than every co-star in the table above except Dwayne Johnson, who shares his 195.6 cm listing on this site.
Summary
Jason Momoa stands about 195.6 cm (6′5″) by his own account, with some outlets listing 6′4″ (193 cm). He has openly credited his size with helping him land the warrior roles that defined his career, from Khal Drogo and Conan to Aquaman, Duncan Idaho and Ka'iana in Chief of War. He is about 18 cm taller than the average American man of his generation, roughly 38 cm taller than Emilia Clarke, and the tallest member of the Justice League core cast. Among current action leads, only Dwayne Johnson and Vince Vaughn match his listed height on this site.
