How tall is Leonardo DiCaprio? The 6′0″ to 6′1″ question

This site lists Leonardo DiCaprio at 185 cm (6′1″), a figure drawn from a Rolling Stone profile. Many other entertainment references round him to 6′0″ (183 cm). Actors, unlike athletes, have no official measurement or roster listing, and DiCaprio has never made a point of publicizing his height, so the most honest summary is a range of roughly 183 to 185 cm. Either figure makes him tall for a leading man and noticeably taller than many of his best-known co-stars.

The more interesting part of DiCaprio's height story is how he reached it. Unlike many actors who arrive in Hollywood fully grown, DiCaprio did much of his growing on camera, as a teenage actor in the early 1990s, and at least one of his most important early performances had to work around a dramatic growth spurt.

The This Boy's Life growth spurt

DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, the only child of George DiCaprio, an underground comics artist and distributor, and Irmelin Indenbirken, a legal secretary who had emigrated from Germany. He began acting as a child in commercials and television, including the final season of the sitcom Growing Pains (1991–1992).

His breakthrough film role came in This Boy's Life (1993), in which he played the young Tobias Wolff opposite Robert De Niro as his abusive stepfather. Newsweek reported in April 1993 that during roughly ten weeks of filming, DiCaprio grew about four inches (around 10 cm), and that he crouched in some scenes so that he would still look smaller than De Niro. Asked about it, he told the magazine: "Height doesn't really matter. It's all in the performance."

That episode is unusual in film history. Continuity departments track hair, costumes and props carefully, but an actor growing 10 cm over a single shoot creates problems that are hard to hide. Scenes shot later had to be framed so the boy still looked smaller than his stepfather, which matters for a story about intimidation and control. Today, De Niro is listed on this site at 177 cm, roughly 8 cm shorter than the adult DiCaprio.

Year Age Context
1991–92 16–17 Growing Pains final season
1992 (filming) 17–18 Grows about 4 inches during This Boy's Life shoot
1993 18–19 What's Eating Gilbert Grape earns first Oscar nomination
1997 23 Titanic, adult height reached
Today 50s About 183–185 cm (6′0″–6′1″)

Gilbert Grape and Titanic: the young star at full height

Later in 1993, DiCaprio played Arnie Grape, the developmentally disabled younger brother of Johnny Depp's title character, in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actor at the 66th Academy Awards; the Oscar went to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive. In the film, Arnie is constantly climbing the town's water tower, and DiCaprio's growing, lanky frame added to the character's restless physicality. Depp is listed at 178 cm on this site, about 7 cm shorter than DiCaprio's adult height.

Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Titanic (1997) made him an international star. By the time he played Jack Dawson in Titanic, he had reached his adult height. Kate Winslet, his co-star, is listed at about 168 cm, which means DiCaprio stood roughly 18 cm taller. The height difference shaped some of the film's most famous images, such as the scene at the ship's bow in which he stands behind her with his arms around her waist.

Co-star height comparisons

Heights below come from this site's data. Because DiCaprio has no official listing, differences use the site's 185 cm figure; subtract about 2 cm if you prefer the 183 cm estimate.

Co-star Film Height Difference
Kate Winslet Titanic (1997), Revolutionary Road (2008) 168 cm (5′6″) DiCaprio 18 cm taller
Johnny Depp What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) 178 cm (5′10″) DiCaprio 7 cm taller
Robert De Niro This Boy's Life (1993), Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) 177 cm (5′10″) DiCaprio 8 cm taller
Tobey Maguire The Great Gatsby (2013) 173 cm (5′8″) DiCaprio 13 cm taller
Matt Damon The Departed (2006) 178 cm (5′10″) DiCaprio 7 cm taller
Jack Nicholson The Departed (2006) 177 cm (5′10″) DiCaprio 8 cm taller
Cillian Murphy Inception (2010) 172 cm (5′8″) DiCaprio 13 cm taller
Tom Hardy Inception (2010), The Revenant (2015) 175 cm (5′9″) DiCaprio 10 cm taller
Margot Robbie The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) 168 cm (5′6″) DiCaprio 18 cm taller
Brad Pitt Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) 180 cm (5′11″) DiCaprio 5 cm taller
Jennifer Lawrence Don't Look Up (2021) 175 cm (5′9″) DiCaprio 10 cm taller
Timothée Chalamet Don't Look Up (2021) 178 cm (5′10″) DiCaprio 7 cm taller
Sean Penn One Battle After Another (2025) 173 cm (5′8″) DiCaprio 12 cm taller

A pattern stands out: DiCaprio is taller than nearly every leading man he has shared the screen with. Of the actors in the table, Brad Pitt comes closest, about 5 cm shorter by this site's figures. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the two play an actor and his stunt double, and the casting works partly because they are close enough in build for the double to be plausible, though DiCaprio is visibly the taller of the two in their shared scenes.

His long friendship with Tobey Maguire, dating back to their days as child actors, also shows up in this kind of comparison. Maguire played Nick Carraway, the narrator, in The Great Gatsby, and DiCaprio stands around 13 cm taller.

In Inception, DiCaprio's character leads a team that includes Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy. Cillian Murphy, at 172 cm, is about 13 cm shorter, and the difference in height subtly reinforces DiCaprio's position as the commanding figure in the ensemble.

In Don't Look Up, the 2021 satire about a comet heading for Earth, DiCaprio played a nervous astronomer alongside Jennifer Lawrence as his graduate student and Timothée Chalamet as a skateboarding drifter. Lawrence, at 175 cm, is one of the taller actresses he has worked with, and the gap between them, about 10 cm, is much smaller than the 18 cm difference with Kate Winslet in Titanic. Chalamet, at 178 cm, plays a much younger character, and the two rarely share the frame in ways that emphasize height.

Working with Martin Scorsese

DiCaprio's longest creative partnership is with director Martin Scorsese. Together they have made Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Scorsese is listed at about 160 cm on this site, around 25 cm shorter than his star, a contrast that appears in countless red-carpet photographs from two decades of collaboration.

Killers of the Flower Moon also reunited DiCaprio with Robert De Niro, 30 years after This Boy's Life. The contrast with 1993 is striking: in their first film together, DiCaprio had to crouch to look smaller than De Niro; in the later one, he simply stands about 8 cm taller.

The Revenant and an Oscar after two decades

DiCaprio won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 88th ceremony in 2016 for The Revenant, beating Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne. The role, as frontiersman Hugh Glass, was intensely physical, involving freezing conditions and grueling outdoor shoots. It came 22 years after his first nomination for Gilbert Grape. In the interval he had been nominated several more times without winning, which made the 2016 award one of the most anticipated in recent Oscar history.

His wider accolades include a BAFTA, three Golden Globes and an Emmy. He also founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, a nonprofit focused on environmental causes, and climate change has been a recurring theme in his public work and in Don't Look Up.

Why actor heights are so hard to pin down

DiCaprio's case is a good example of why celebrity heights are less certain than athletes'. Sports leagues publish heights as part of official rosters, and the NBA has required teams to certify heights without shoes since 2019. Actors have no equivalent. Studios do not publish measurements, and most published figures come from one of three places: magazine profiles in which a journalist describes the actor, interviews in which the actor states a number, or aggregator sites that copy figures from each other.

For DiCaprio, the 185 cm figure on this site comes from a Rolling Stone profile, while many other references give 183 cm without citing any source. Neither figure is a formal measurement. Footwear adds further uncertainty: dress shoes and boots commonly add 2 to 4 cm, and red-carpet photos are almost always taken in shoes. Camera lenses and angles can make anyone look taller or shorter on screen.

This is why the site shows a single canonical number but discusses ranges in cases like this. When a celebrity's height cannot be measured directly, the best approach is to look for consistency across independent, reputable descriptions and to treat a difference of one or two centimeters as noise rather than as a real dispute. DiCaprio, at 183 to 185 cm, is tall enough that the uncertainty does not change any of the comparisons above in a meaningful way.

How he compares with his own childhood

There is also a time dimension to his height that few actors share. Because DiCaprio began acting before his growth spurt, viewers can watch him grow across his early work, from Growing Pains and Critters 3 to This Boy's Life, Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries in 1995. Newsweek's 1993 report captured the most dramatic part of that change, when he grew about four inches in a single film shoot. By the mid-1990s, he had reached the adult height that audiences now associate with him.

Height and the leading-man image

In Hollywood, height is often handled with camera angles, staging and footwear, and many leading men are shorter than audiences assume. DiCaprio is one of the less common cases of a star who is genuinely tall. That makes some practical difference: directors rarely need to use boxes or trenches to make him look taller than his co-stars, and with most leading ladies the height gap is large enough to read clearly on screen.

At the same time, DiCaprio's screen persona has never been built around physical size. His most celebrated roles, from Arnie Grape to Jordan Belfort to Hugh Glass, depend on intensity, vulnerability and transformation rather than physical dominance. That fits what he told Newsweek as a teenager: height mattered less to him than the performance.

Compared with the average American man

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimates that American men born in the mid-1970s, DiCaprio's generation, reached an average adult height of about 177.5 cm (5′10″). At 183 to 185 cm, DiCaprio is roughly 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3 inches) taller than average.

Group Average height DiCaprio at 185 cm DiCaprio at 183 cm
US men born 1976 177.5 cm +7.5 cm +5.5 cm
US men born 1956 177.2 cm +7.8 cm +5.8 cm

That places him roughly between the 75th and 85th percentile for American men of his generation, depending on which figure you use: tall, but not extraordinarily so. You can check the exact percentile with the height percentile calculator, or see how 185 cm converts on the 185 cm to feet page.

Why DiCaprio's height story is unusual

Most actors' heights are fixed by the time audiences meet them. DiCaprio's grew in front of the camera, during the very film that made critics take notice. That growth spurt, recorded by Newsweek in 1993, turned a teenage actor who had to crouch beside Robert De Niro into an adult who stands taller than almost every leading man he has worked with. Whether you use 183 or 185 cm, he sits comfortably above average, and his career shows that the performance, not the height, made him a star.

If you want to test the comparisons yourself, the height comparison tool lets you place DiCaprio beside any of the co-stars above, or beside yourself, at either figure. Switching between 183 and 185 cm is a quick way to see how little a two-centimeter disagreement changes the overall picture.
