How tall is Elon Musk, and where the number comes from

The site lists Elon Musk at 188 cm (6′2″). That is the figure mainstream outlets use when his height comes up. The clearest example is CNBC's June 2023 coverage of the proposed "cage match" between Musk and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, which described "the 6-foot-2 Musk" as having the size and weight advantage over the 5-foot-7 Zuckerberg.

It is worth being clear about what kind of number this is. Musk is not an athlete, so there is no league roster, combine sheet or official program listing behind it. Executives are rarely measured in public, and their heights come from journalists' descriptions, appearances alongside people of known height, and occasionally the person's own comments. For Musk, 6′2″ is consistent across reputable coverage, and nothing in mainstream reporting seriously contradicts it. The site treats it as a well-supported reported height rather than a certified measurement.

From Pretoria to Silicon Valley: a tall man in three countries

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on June 28, 1971. His mother, Maye Musk, was born in Canada and raised in South Africa, and she later became known internationally as a model. His father, Errol Musk, is a South African engineer and property developer. Musk moved to Canada in June 1989, entered Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1990, and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he completed degrees in physics and economics.

That path means his height can be compared with three national populations: the country of his birth, the country he first emigrated to, and the country where he built his companies and became a citizen in 2002.

Comparison group (NCD-RisC) Average male height Musk's difference
South African men, 1976 birth cohort 169.3 cm +18.7 cm
Canadian men, 1976 birth cohort 177.1 cm +10.9 cm
American men, 1976 birth cohort 177.5 cm +10.5 cm

The South African comparison is the most striking. NCD-RisC data shows that average height for South African men barely changed through the 20th century compared with Europe and North America: men born in 1896 averaged 165.3 cm and men born in 1976 averaged 169.3 cm, and the estimate for the 1996 cohort is lower again at 166.7 cm. The national average combines very different population groups and reflects long-standing inequalities in nutrition and health, so individual heights vary widely. Against that average, though, Musk is roughly 19 cm taller.

In North America the gap narrows to about 11 cm. That still puts him well above the middle of the distribution, taller than the large majority of men of his generation in both Canada and the United States.

Childhood and school years

Biographers have described Musk's school years in South Africa as difficult. Accounts summarized from Ashlee Vance's 2015 biography and Walter Isaacson's 2023 biography describe him being bullied, including one incident in which he was thrown down a set of concrete steps and hospitalized. Those books focus on his temperament and family life rather than his size, and there is no reliable published account of how tall he was as a child or when he grew. The site doesn't speculate on that.

The 2023 cage-match challenge and the height question

Musk's height became a news item in June 2023. After a series of public jabs, Musk suggested a "cage match" with Zuckerberg, who accepted. CNBC described a years-long rivalry between the two, from Musk deleting the Facebook pages of Tesla and SpaceX in 2018 to Zuckerberg criticizing a SpaceX launch failure in 2016 that destroyed a Facebook satellite.

The coverage quickly turned to who would win, and size was the first point raised. CNBC noted that Musk had the height and weight advantage, while Zuckerberg had recently won gold and silver medals at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament. Zuckerberg's own Wikipedia biography records that he competed at white belt in May 2023 and was promoted to blue belt in July 2023. Musk, by contrast, had said that week that he almost never worked out.

Elon Musk Mark Zuckerberg
Reported height 6′2″ (188 cm) 5′7″ (170 cm)
Combat sports background None reported Brazilian jiu-jitsu medals, 2023
Age in June 2023 51 39

The fight never took place. As a height comparison, though, it is a neat illustration of a point combat sports fans make constantly: a 7-inch height gap and a weight advantage are significant, but training and skill can matter more. Combat sports separate competitors by weight class for exactly that reason, not by height.

Elon Musk next to other public figures

Musk is frequently photographed with politicians, executives and media figures. The comparisons below use the site's data.

Person Context Height (site data) Difference
Donald Trump Political ally in 2024–25 190.5 cm (6′3″) Trump +2.5 cm
Mark Zuckerberg Tech rival 170 cm (5′7″) Musk +18 cm
Bill Gates Fellow tech billionaire 177 cm (5′9½″) Musk +11 cm
Joe Rogan Podcast host who interviewed him 172.7 cm (5′8″) Musk +15 cm

With Donald Trump

Musk was a prominent supporter of Donald Trump in the 2024 election and, after the January 2025 inauguration, informally led the Department of Government Efficiency before leaving in May 2025. The two appeared together at many events. The site lists Trump at 190.5 cm, about 2.5 cm (one inch) taller than Musk. In practice, posture, footwear and camera angle make a one-inch gap almost invisible in photos, which is why images of the two often look like a match.

With Joe Rogan

Musk has appeared several times on The Joe Rogan Experience. Seated across a podcast table, height differences mostly disappear, but in standing photos the 15 cm gap between Musk and Rogan is obvious. Rogan, a former martial artist and UFC commentator, is a good example of a shorter man with far more combat experience, which echoes the Zuckerberg debate.

With other South African-born stars

Musk is one of several globally famous people born in South Africa in the 1970s. Actor Charlize Theron, born in Benoni in 1975, is listed in the site's data at 177 cm, which makes her about 11 cm shorter than Musk but, notably, almost 19 cm taller than the NCD-RisC average for South African women of her generation (158 to 159 cm). Both left South Africa as young adults and built careers in the United States, and both are far above the averages of the country they were born in. That is a reminder that national averages describe populations, not individuals, and that a country's average can mask enormous variation between regions, communities and families.

You can see any of these pairings at true scale in the height difference calculator.

Does height matter in business? What research says

Musk's height is often mentioned in passing in profiles, which raises a broader question: do tall people have an advantage in leadership? The research says yes, but modestly.

The most cited study is a 2004 meta-analysis by Timothy Judge and Daniel Cable in the Journal of Applied Psychology. Pooling earlier research, they found physical height was positively related to social esteem, leader emergence and job performance ratings. They also analyzed four large samples totaling 8,590 people and found that height was positively related to income after controlling for sex, age and weight. The relationship was slightly stronger for men than for women, although that difference was not statistically significant.

There are important caveats:

  • The effects are correlations, not destiny. A correlation of about 0.24 for leader emergence means height explains only a small share of who becomes a leader.
  • Plenty of counterexamples exist. Zuckerberg, at 170 cm, built one of the world's most valuable companies. Many leaders in the site's celebrity catalog are of average height or shorter.
  • Height interacts with culture. What counts as tall in one country is average in another, which matters for someone like Musk who has lived in three.

The fairest reading is that Musk's height is one visible trait among many and not an explanation for his career. It does, however, make him stand out in group photos with other executives, where many are closer to average height.

Family and build

Musk's parents and siblings have not had their heights published by reputable sources, so the site doesn't list them or speculate about inheritance. His mother, Maye Musk, has worked as a model for decades, but agency figures are not independently verified.

No official weight has been published for Musk either, and the site does not record one. During the cage-match coverage, CNBC noted only that he had a weight advantage over Zuckerberg, without a figure. Reporting on his fitness over the years has been anecdotal, and the site avoids repeating speculation about body changes.

What 188 cm looks like

At 188 cm, Musk is about the same height as NBA guards such as Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry, both listed at 188 cm in the site's data. He is a little shorter than a standard 2-meter door frame and noticeably taller than most people in a typical boardroom or conference stage lineup.

Where 188 cm falls in the American distribution

The best measured data on American heights comes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), in which trained staff measure participants rather than asking them. The CDC's anthropometric reference report for 2015–2018 gives these figures for American men:

NHANES 2015–2018 group Mean height 90th percentile 95th percentile
All men aged 20 and over 175.3 cm 184.7 cm 187.4 cm
Men aged 40–49 176.3 cm 184.9 cm 188.4 cm
Men aged 50–59 175.4 cm 184.9 cm 187.7 cm

Musk was in his late forties and early fifties during that survey window. At 188 cm he sits right around the 95th percentile for American men of his age, meaning roughly 19 in 20 men his age are shorter. Against all adult men, he is about 12.7 cm (5 inches) above the mean.

That is a more precise way of saying "tall" than any adjective. It also explains why he tends to stand out in group photos with other executives and politicians, most of whom fall closer to the middle of the distribution. It does not make him unusual in every setting, though: on a basketball court or in a rowing crew, 188 cm would be ordinary.

You can check where any height falls with the height percentile calculator, or line Musk up with any person, landmark or character using the main height comparison tool.

Why Musk's height gets so much attention

Very few business leaders have their heights discussed at all. Musk is an exception because he is unusually visible: he has hosted Saturday Night Live, appears at political rallies, posts constantly on the social network he owns, and has been photographed beside many famous people. Time named him Person of the Year for 2021. Each of those appearances invites side-by-side comparisons.

The cage-match episode amplified this. For a few weeks in 2023, two of the world's richest men were being sized up like fighters, and their heights and weights were reported the way a boxing promoter would print them on a poster. That moment is the main reason his 6′2″ figure is so widely repeated today, and it remains the best-documented reference point for his height.

If a more precise figure ever appears, for example from an official document or a measured appearance, the site will update its listing and note the change. Until then, 188 cm is the value used in every comparison on the site, from the side-by-side calculator to the 3D lineup, and it matches what reputable reporting has said about him for years.
