Six feet in centimeters
Six feet is 72 inches, because each foot has 12 inches, and 72 × 2.54 = 182.88 cm, or 1.83 m. You can also go straight from feet: the international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters, so six feet is 6 × 0.3048 = 1.8288 m. The National Institute of Standards and Technology explains that both definitions date from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, which fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 meters.
Rounded to whole centimeters, 6′0″ is 183 cm, and the two figures are used interchangeably on most profiles. Note the asymmetry, though: 182 cm is 71.65 inches, which rounds to 6′0″, yet it is still almost a centimeter short of six feet. A metric listing of 182 cm and an imperial listing of 6′0″ are both defensible for the same person. The 183 cm page shows the metric view.

How rare is a 6-foot man?
Six feet is perhaps the most talked-about male height, so it is worth being exact about how common it is. The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) measured a nationally representative sample of US adults between August 2021 and August 2023. Interpolating its published percentiles:
| Group (NHANES 2021–2023) | 85th percentile value | 6′0″ percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Men 20+ | 183.0 cm | about 85th |
| Men 20–29 | 184.7 cm | about 80th |
| Men 30–39 | 183.4 cm | about 83rd |
| Men 40–49 | 185.0 cm | about 76th |
| Men 50–59 | 181.3 cm | about 88th |
| Men 60–69 | 182.5 cm | about 86th |
| Men 70–79 | 179.8 cm | about 93rd |
| Women 20+ | 168.6 cm | above 95th |
The NHANES 85th percentile for men aged 20 and over was 183.0 cm, so six feet sits almost exactly on it. In plain terms, about 15% of American men, roughly one in seven, are six feet or taller. In some age bands the share is higher; among men in their forties, the survey's tallest group at the upper percentiles, 6′0″ is around the 76th percentile, so nearly a quarter reach it. Among men in their seventies, only about one in fourteen does. Cross-sectional surveys mix age-related height loss with the shorter stature of older cohorts, so these differences should not be read as one person's trajectory.
For women, 6′0″ is far beyond the 95th percentile of 172.5 cm. The height percentile calculator estimates a percentile for any height and age band.
Why six feet feels more common than it is
Many men report a height slightly above what a tape measure shows. Validation studies cited in a large UK couples study found that men overstate their height by about 1.2 cm on average, and women by about 0.6 cm, with larger errors after age fifty. Because 6′0″ sits right on the boundary between "tall" and "very tall" in casual conversation, a centimeter of optimism and a little rounding turn many 5′11″ men into six-footers. Measured data, like NHANES, are the reliable reference.
The Netherlands: where six feet is average
Six feet is roughly the average for young Dutch men. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, which estimated mean height by birth year in 200 countries from measurements on more than 18.6 million people, found that men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of the twentieth century were the tallest population in its century of data, with averages above 182.5 cm. For the 1996 cohort:
| Country (born 1996) | Average man | Short of 6′0″ by |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 182.5 cm | 0.4 cm |
| Estonia | 181.6 cm | 1.3 cm |
| Denmark | 181.4 cm | 1.5 cm |
| Latvia | 181.4 cm | 1.5 cm |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | 180.9 cm | 2.0 cm |
| Serbia | 180.6 cm | 2.3 cm |
| United States | 177.1 cm | 5.8 cm |
The Dutch story is a fast climb followed by a plateau. Dutch men born in 1896 averaged 169.4 cm, about 5′6½″. By the 1956 cohort they averaged 180.4 cm, and by 1976 182.5 cm, where the 1996 cohort remains. American men, who were taller than the Dutch a century ago at 171.1 cm, leveled off around 177 cm from the 1950s onward. The average height hub compares all 200 countries.
Famous people listed at 6′0″
Six featured people on the site are listed at 183 cm, plus one at 182.9 cm. They include singer Harry Styles, actor Chris Evans, footballer David Beckham, President Joe Biden, rapper Drake (182.9 cm) and two NBA guards, Allen Iverson and Chris Paul. Iverson and Paul illustrate how relative tallness is: six feet makes a man taller than about 85% of American men, yet in professional basketball it is a guard's height.
The catalog includes many presidents near six feet: Gerald Ford, James Garfield and James Buchanan at 183 cm, John Tyler at 182.9 cm, and Richard Nixon, Herbert Hoover, James Monroe and William Howard Taft at 182 cm. Tony Blair and Alexander Graham Bell are also listed at 183 cm.
Six feet in jobs and design limits
Height limits often sit just above or just below six feet.
Spaceflight. NASA's first astronauts, chosen in 1959, had to be shorter than 5′11″ because the Mercury capsule could not fit anyone taller. A six-foot test pilot would have been eliminated at screening, as several candidates were.
Airline cabin crew. Airlines that set height or reach rules for flight attendants typically accept applicants between about 152 cm and 185 cm. Six feet, at 182.88 cm, fits with about two centimeters to spare; an inch taller, at 6′1″ (185.42 cm), would edge past the common upper limit.
Modeling. Commonly cited guidance puts male models at 5′11″ to 6′2″, and fashion modeling often looks for men 6′1″ and up. A six-foot man is inside the general range but just below the fashion ideal.
Beds. Standard US twin and full mattresses are 75 inches long, just three inches longer than a six-foot person, and the Sleep Foundation notes that a twin can feel cramped for anyone over six feet. Its advice is that people over six feet consider mattresses at least 80 inches long: twin XL, queen, king (all 80 inches) or California king (84 inches). Back and stomach sleepers, who lie fully extended, feel the difference most, since their feet reach the end of the mattress first.
Doors. Customary US door heights are 78 or 80 inches, and most residential passage doors measure 30 by 80 inches. A six-foot person clears an 80-inch door by eight inches and a 78-inch door by six, comfortable margins even in shoes. Older buildings often have smaller doors, which is where tall people tend to notice lintels first.
The "6-foot" premium: what research says
Six feet is often treated as a social threshold, and there is some evidence that height carries modest advantages. A 2004 study in the Journal of Political Economy, summarized in reviews of height discrimination, estimated that each additional inch of height was associated with about 1.8% higher wages for men. Three inches separate the US median of 5′9″ from 6′0″, so the estimate implies an average gap of around 5%. The same researchers linked adult wages to height at age 16, which points to the social experiences of being a taller teenager as part of the explanation.
Height also shows up in small everyday interactions. In observational studies of more than 2,000 people, Gert Stulp and colleagues found that taller people were less likely to step aside for others in narrow passages and busy shopping streets and more likely to hold a straight walking path. They suggest such brief encounters may contribute to the familiar link between height and status. Neither finding is a reason to treat six feet as a meaningful line for any individual; the effects are averages, and they are small relative to the variation between people.
Six feet in couples
The site's featured comparisons pair 6′0″ with a range of partners, from 5′4″ vs 6′0″, an 8-inch gap, to 5′0″ vs 6′0″, a full foot. Research on real couples gives context for those gaps. In a UK study of more than 12,500 parent couples, the average height difference was 14.11 cm, about 5½ inches, and the man was taller in 92.5% of couples. Pairs with the man more than 25 cm (about 10 inches) taller occurred slightly less often than random pairing would predict, a pattern the authors called the "male-not-too-tall" norm. For a six-foot man, a 25 cm gap means a partner of about 158 cm (5′2″) or shorter, so 5′0″ vs 6′0″ falls just outside that band while 5′4″ vs 6′0″ falls well within it. The effects were modest, though, and the authors concluded that partner preferences translate into actual couples only weakly.
Why "six feet" is such a round number
Six feet owes its status partly to arithmetic. It is exactly two yards, 72 inches, and the only height most people can name in three different imperial units without a calculator. Its metric value, by contrast, is awkward: 182.88 cm. That is a direct consequence of the 1958 agreement among English-speaking nations, described by NIST, which unified the American and imperial yards by defining both in metric terms. The American yard was shortened slightly and the imperial yard lengthened, and the inch became exactly 2.54 cm.
In metric countries the equivalent psychological threshold is usually 180 cm, which is 5′10.9″. That means a man who proudly reports "180" in Berlin and a man who rounds himself up to "six foot" in Chicago may be describing almost exactly the same body, two centimeters apart. When comparing listings across countries, it is worth converting both to centimeters first.
Growing to six feet
The CDC 2000 stature-for-age charts, the US reference for ages 2 to 20, cross 182.88 cm only on the upper curves:
- Boys, 95th percentile: at about 15 years 2 months.
- Boys, median: never; the median boy reaches about 176.8 cm by age 20.
- Girls: no standard curve up to the 95th percentile reaches six feet.
At 20, six feet corresponds to about the 80th percentile on the CDC chart for young men. Adult-height predictions are uncertain, and any concerns about growth are a matter for a pediatrician.
Measuring six feet honestly
If the difference between "almost six feet" and "six feet" matters to you, measure barefoot, with heels, buttocks and shoulder blades against a wall, eyes level, and a flat object lowered onto the crown. Measure at midday: a study of schoolchildren in Southampton found that stature fell by about half a centimeter over the morning and then stabilized after about six hours out of bed. For a visual comparison with anyone else, use the height difference calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of men are 6 feet or taller?
In the US, about 15%. NHANES 2021–2023 puts 6′0″ (182.88 cm) near the 85th percentile for men aged 20 and over; the 85th percentile value itself was 183.0 cm. Among men in their forties the share is closer to a quarter.
Is the average Dutch man 6 feet tall?
Very nearly. NCD-RisC estimates that Dutch men born in 1996 average 182.5 cm, less than half a centimeter short of 6′0″ (182.88 cm). Dutch men born in the last quarter of the twentieth century are the tallest population in its century of data.
Do 6-foot people need a longer bed?
It helps. Standard twin and full mattresses are 75 inches long, only three inches more than a 6-foot person. The Sleep Foundation suggests that people over six feet consider a mattress at least 80 inches long, such as a twin XL, queen, king or California king.
Could a 6-foot pilot have joined the Mercury Seven?
No. NASA's first astronauts, chosen in 1959, had to be shorter than 5′11″ to fit inside the Mercury capsule, and candidates over the limit were eliminated during screening.
Do taller men earn more?
On average, slightly. One widely cited 2004 study estimated about 1.8% higher wages per additional inch of height for men. On that estimate, a 6′0″ man would earn roughly 5% more than an otherwise similar 5′9″ man, but the spread among individuals is far larger than this average.
Is 6′0″ within the range for male models?
Yes. Commonly cited guidance puts male models at about 5′11″ to 6′2″, and fashion agencies often look for 6′1″ and up, so 6′0″ is inside the usual range though slightly below the fashion ideal.
