David Beckham's height: 183 cm (6′0″)

David Beckham is listed at 183 cm (6′0″), the figure used by his clubs in his playing days and recorded on Wikidata with a reference to Paris Saint-Germain, his final club. His playing weight is usually given as about 75 kg (165 lb). Football clubs publish heights less consistently than NBA teams, and they rarely say whether players were measured in boots, socks or bare feet, but 183 cm has been the steady number across references for most of his career.

That makes Beckham a little taller than average for a professional footballer in his position. He was primarily a right midfielder, a role that has historically favored stamina and crossing ability over size. At 183 cm, he was tall enough to compete in the air when needed but light enough to cover enormous distances up and down the right flank.

A late developer passed over for being small

The most interesting part of Beckham's height story comes before he reached 183 cm. Born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, east London, he was a late developer. According to biographical accounts, he was not selected for England Schoolboys mainly because of his small size, a setback that would have ended many youth careers.

Manchester United took a different view. He joined the club as a trainee and progressed into the famous youth group that won the FA Youth Cup in 1992 alongside players such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt. Over his late teens he grew and filled out, and by the time he broke into United's first team in the mid-1990s he was close to his adult height.

His story illustrates something youth coaches discuss often: in age-group football, physically early-maturing players are frequently favored, while late developers can be overlooked. Beckham, who relied on technique rather than size even when he was small, is one of the best-known examples of a player who became a star after being judged too slight.

Stage Size context Notes
Early teens Small for his age Passed over by England Schoolboys mainly because of size
1992 Growing into adult frame FA Youth Cup winner with Manchester United
1995 Near adult height Loan to Preston North End, then United first team
Peak career 183 cm (6′0″), ~75 kg Right midfielder for United, Real Madrid and England

How football clubs measure height

It helps to know how football heights are produced before treating any of them as exact. Unlike the NBA, which since 2019 has required teams to certify players' heights without shoes, football has no league-wide measurement standard. Clubs publish heights in squad lists, matchday programmes and websites, and the numbers often come from pre-season medicals, from agents, or simply from older records that are copied forward year after year. Different clubs can list the same player a centimeter or two apart, and few say whether the figure was taken barefoot.

For Beckham, the 183 cm figure is supported by several clubs over a long period, and Wikidata's entry cites PSG's player page from his final season. That consistency is the best evidence available. A height that appears unchanged across Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and PSG listings is unlikely to be far off, even if no barefoot measurement has ever been published.

The same caution applies to weight. The 75 kg figure stored on this site reflects his playing days. Weights are more variable than heights and depend on the point in a season and a career at which they were recorded, which is one reason the NBA deliberately left weight out of its 2019 certification rule.

Height and the right-midfield role

Beckham's game was built around three skills: crossing, passing over long distances, and set pieces. None depends on height, but his frame helped in specific ways.

  • Reach and balance in the tackle. At 183 cm with a lean build, he had a long stride and could recover ground quickly to defend, which made him unusually reliable as a defensive winger.
  • Long passing. A taller player with long levers can generate power with less backlift, and Beckham was known for switching play with 50- and 60-yard passes.
  • Defending set pieces. On opposition corners, his height made him a useful extra body in the box, although he was never primarily an aerial player.

His most celebrated skill, the curling free kick, was pure technique. He struck the ball with the inside of his right foot, wrapping it around walls and dipping it under the crossbar. The Premier League credits him with 18 goals scored directly from free kicks, a record that no other player has come close to matching.

The goals that defined him

Two goals sum up Beckham's career, and neither had anything to do with size.

In August 1996, on the opening day of the season against Wimbledon, he scored from inside his own half, lobbing the goalkeeper from the halfway line. The goal made him a national name almost overnight.

On October 6, 2001, at Old Trafford, England trailed Greece 2–1 in their final World Cup qualifier and needed a point to top the group. In the 93rd minute, Beckham curled a free kick over the wall and into the far corner to make it 2–2. The draw sent England directly to the 2002 World Cup and pushed Germany into the playoffs. Planet Football described it as the moment that completed his redemption after the 1998 World Cup, where he had been sent off against Argentina and blamed by much of the English press for the team's elimination.

From Saint-Étienne to Sapporo

The 1998 red card came in the round of 16 against Argentina in Saint-Étienne. After being fouled by Diego Simeone, Beckham flicked a leg at him while lying on the ground and was sent off early in the second half. England, down to ten men, held on until a penalty shootout and lost. For months afterwards he was the target of intense criticism from fans and newspapers.

Four years later, the two countries met again in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup in Sapporo, Japan. Beckham, by then England captain, scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. Coming after the Greece free kick, it completed one of the more dramatic turnarounds in English sporting history, and it had nothing to do with physical attributes: it was about composure in front of a global audience.

The No. 7 lineage

Beckham wore United's No. 7, a shirt previously worn by George Best, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona. When he left for Real Madrid in 2003, it passed to a teenage Cristiano Ronaldo, who is listed at 185 cm. The two have similar heights but very different builds and roles: Beckham was a crosser and passer from the right, while Ronaldo developed into a goal-scoring forward with exceptional aerial ability.

Messi and Inter Miami

Beckham is president and co-owner of Inter Miami, and the club's signing of Lionel Messi in 2023 was one of the biggest moves in MLS history. Photographs of the two together show a gap of about 14 cm. Messi's career, like Beckham's early years, is often cited as proof that small players can thrive in football, and both men faced early doubts about their size.

The Real Madrid years

At Real Madrid from 2003 to 2007, Beckham played alongside Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário, Luís Figo and Roberto Carlos in the so-called Galácticos era. Zidane, at 185 cm, was slightly taller. Beckham often played in central midfield in Madrid, where his long passing range and stamina compensated for a lack of pace.

Clubs, countries and the American move

Beckham's career took him to some of the biggest clubs in the world. After Manchester United, with a 1995 loan at Preston North End, he played for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan on two loans in 2009 and 2010, and Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, where he finished his playing career. His move to LA Galaxy in 2007 was seen as a watershed for Major League Soccer, and his contract included an option to buy an expansion franchise, which became Inter Miami.

For England, he earned 115 caps, at the time the most by an outfield player, and captained the team 59 times. He finished as runner-up for the Ballon d'Or in 1999, the year United won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

From winger to deep playmaker

As his career progressed, Beckham's role shifted in ways that suited his frame. Without the explosive acceleration of a classic winger, he became increasingly valuable in central and deeper midfield positions, where vision and passing range mattered more than pace. At Real Madrid, AC Milan and in his later England years, he was often used as a playmaker from deep, dictating play with long diagonal passes. A tall, lean midfielder with a wide passing range can control a game from that position without needing to beat players one-on-one, and Beckham's late-career adaptability helped him play at a high level into his late thirties.

Honours beyond the pitch

Beckham was made an OBE in 2003. In June 2025, he was knighted in the King's Birthday Honours for services to sport and charity, becoming Sir David Beckham. Sky Sports noted his work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005 and his 7 Fund for vulnerable children. He was also inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021, chosen by a combination of fan votes and a panel.

Compared with the average British man

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimates that British men born in the mid-1970s, Beckham's generation, reached an average adult height of about 177.5 cm (5′10″). At 183 cm, Beckham is about 5.5 cm (2 inches) taller than that average, a clear but modest margin.

Group Average height Beckham's margin
UK men born 1976 177.5 cm +5.5 cm
UK men born 1956 175.9 cm +7.1 cm
UK men born 1896 166.9 cm +16.1 cm

The historical comparison is striking. A man of 183 cm would have towered over British men born a century earlier, who averaged under 167 cm. The average height in the United Kingdom page shows how much British men grew over the 20th century. To see exactly how 183 cm converts and compares, the 183 cm to feet page has the details.

What Beckham's height tells us

Beckham is an example of a footballer whose height was close to ideal for his role without ever being the defining feature of his game. His 183 cm frame gave him reach, stride length and enough presence to defend set pieces, while his technique, stamina and vision did the rest. The more lasting lesson comes from his youth: a boy rejected for being too small became one of the most recognizable footballers of his generation. Youth academies now talk openly about the risk of judging players on early physical maturity, and Beckham's path, from undersized schoolboy to 183 cm England captain, is one of the stories most often used to make that point.
