160 cm is 5′3″, to a fifth of a millimeter

Since July 1, 1959, the inch has been exactly 25.4 mm. NIST explains that the figure came from an agreement among English-speaking nations to define their units in metric terms. With that constant:

  1. 160 ÷ 2.54 = 62.992 inches
  2. 62.992 ÷ 12 = 5.249, so 5 whole feet
  3. 62.992 − 60 = 2.99 inches
  4. 160 cm = 5′ 2.99″, which is 5′3″ for every practical purpose

Exactly 5′3″ is 63 inches, or 160.02 cm. The difference between the two is 0.02 cm, a fifth of a millimeter, far smaller than the error in any home measurement. Along with 155 cm (5′1″), this is one of the few round metric heights that lines up almost perfectly with a whole number of inches.

Unit 160 cm
Total inches 62.99 in
Feet and inches 5′ 2.99″
Nearest inch 5′3″ (160.02 cm)
Decimal feet 5.25 ft
Meters 1.60 m
Above 5′0″ 7.6 cm (2.99 in)

The decimal value, 5.25 ft, is neat as well: a quarter of a foot is 3 inches, so 5.25 ft is 5′3″. For the reverse direction see 5′3″ in cm.

Famous people at 160 cm

Several well-known people in the site's data are listed at or within a centimeter of 160 cm:

Person Field Height in our data
Nicki Minaj Rapper, born 1982 160 cm
Doja Cat Singer and rapper, born 1995 160 cm
Tory Lanez Rapper, born 1992 160 cm
Kim Kardashian Media personality, born 1980 159 cm
Muggsy Bogues NBA guard, 1987–2001 listed 5′3″ (1.60 m)

Celebrity heights are usually self-reported or quoted in the press rather than measured under controlled conditions, so differences of a centimeter or two between sources are normal. Each person's page explains where the site's figure comes from.

Muggsy Bogues, the NBA's shortest player

The most remarkable 160 cm career belongs to a basketball player. Muggsy Bogues, listed at 5′3″ (1.60 m), is described as the shortest player ever to play in the NBA. The Washington Bullets took him 12th overall in the first round of the 1987 draft, and he went on to play 14 seasons, from 1987 to 2001, for Washington, the Charlotte Hornets, the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors. He finished with 6,726 assists, 7.6 per game.

For scale, Shaquille O'Neal, listed at 216 cm in our data, was 56 cm (22 inches) taller than Bogues's listed height. You can put a 160 cm figure next to NBA players with pages on this site, such as Shaquille O'Neal, in the 3D height comparison tool to see what that looks like.

Characters at 160 cm

Official character heights cluster at round numbers, and 160 cm is a popular one:

Character Franchise Height Source in our data
Levi Ackerman Attack on Titan 160 cm Attack on Titan guidebook
Nobara Kugisaki Jujutsu Kaisen 160 cm Volume 1 character profile
Wolverine Marvel 160 cm Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe
Sakura Haruno Naruto 161 cm Naruto databooks

The Wolverine entry produces one of the largest gaps between a character and the actor best known for playing him. Hugh Jackman, whose notable works include X-Men and Deadpool & Wolverine according to Wikidata, is listed at 190.5 cm in our data, 30.5 cm (12 inches) taller than the handbook height of 160 cm. The comparison tool can put the two side by side.

Levi, Nobara and Wolverine are all listed at exactly the same height as Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat in our data, which makes 160 cm a convenient anchor when comparing fiction with real people. Character heights come from the publishers' own guidebooks, volume profiles and handbooks rather than measurement, and the sources listed on each character page say which edition the number comes from.

For women, 160 cm is close to the middle

The National Center for Health Statistics' NHANES survey measures heights in person. In the August 2021–August 2023 results, published in June 2025, the average US woman aged 20 and over is 161.2 cm, so 160 cm is only 1.2 cm below average.

NHANES 2021–2023 group Median 160 cm percentile
Women 20+ 161.2 cm ~44th
Women 20–29 163.3 cm ~33rd
Women 40–49 162.0 cm ~40th
Women 60–69 160.4 cm ~48th
Women 70–79 157.9 cm ~62nd
Women 80+ 156.9 cm ~65th

Values are interpolated between published percentiles.

Among women in their 60s, 160 cm is almost exactly the median. Among women in their 20s, it is around the 33rd percentile, and among women over 70 it is above average. On the older CDC 2000 growth reference at age 20, 160 cm is about half a standard deviation below the female median of 163.3 cm, near the 30th percentile, consistent with NHANES for young women.

Globally, the numbers are even closer. Our World in Data puts women born in 1996 at about 159 cm on average, and NCD-RisC's country estimates for that cohort include:

Country Average woman, born 1996
China 159.7 cm
Iran 159.7 cm
Brazil 160.9 cm
Turkey 160.5 cm
Singapore 160.3 cm
Argentina 159.2 cm
North Korea 159.0 cm

So in the world's most populous countries outside South Asia, a 160 cm woman is close to the national average.

How China, Iran and Brazil reached 160 cm

The women's averages near 160 cm are the result of large gains over the twentieth century. In the site's NCD-RisC data:

Country Women born 1896 Women born 1956 Women born 1996 Gain
China 150.2 cm 157.3 cm 159.7 cm +9.5 cm
Iran 148.5 cm 156.3 cm 159.7 cm +11.2 cm
Brazil 150.2 cm 157.2 cm 160.9 cm +10.7 cm
Turkey 149.6 cm 157.4 cm 160.5 cm +10.9 cm
Singapore 147.1 cm 157.2 cm 160.3 cm +13.2 cm

Men in these countries gained even more. NCD-RisC highlights Iranian men, whose average rose by 16.5 cm over the century, among the largest gains for men anywhere; in the site's data they went from 157.1 cm to 173.6 cm. Iranian women born in 1896 averaged 148.5 cm, so a 160 cm woman then would have been more than 11 cm above average, a height that is now ordinary.

Argentina is a counterexample: women there born in 1976 averaged 159.6 cm and those born in 1996 averaged 159.2 cm, a small decline, while men continued to gain. Our World in Data describes nutrition and childhood health as the strongest drivers of these population-level changes, with genetics explaining much of the variation between individuals within a population.

For men, 160 cm is the shortest national average

The same height looks very different for men. NCD-RisC, which pooled 1,472 population studies and more than 18.6 million measured people, identifies the shortest men born in 1996 as those in Timor-Leste, Yemen and Laos, at roughly 160 cm. In the site's data, Laotian men average 160.5 cm and Yemeni men 159.9 cm. The global average for men born in 1996, according to Our World in Data, is about 171 cm, 11 cm above 160 cm.

In the United States, 160 cm is below the 5th percentile for men overall (the 5th percentile is 162.2 cm). Only in the older age groups does it rise into the measured range: about the 6th percentile for men aged 70–79 and the 10th for men 80 and over.

That makes 160 cm one of the clearest examples of sexual dimorphism in height. Our World in Data reports that men are taller than women in every country, by about 12 cm globally, and that the male-to-female height ratio is about 1.07. A height that sits near the women's median in the United States sits below the 5th percentile for men.

What research says about height and men's careers

Economists have studied whether shorter men earn less. Case and Paxson (NBER, 2006; later in the Journal of Political Economy) found that taller adults on average hold higher-status jobs and earn more, and argued that much of this reflects cognitive ability measured in childhood rather than height itself. Persico, Postlewaite and Silverman (NBER, 2004) found that for white men, height as a teenager explained most of the wage difference associated with adult height, partly through participation in high-school sports and clubs. Both are averages across large samples; neither says anything about an individual.

160 cm during the teenage years

The CDC's 2000 stature-for-age charts give a median and two distribution parameters for each month of age, and the CDC publishes the formula for converting any height into a z-score. Applied to 160 cm:

Age 160 cm for a girl 160 cm for a boy
12 ~88th percentile ~92nd percentile
13 ~65th ~68th
14 ~47th ~31st
15 ~39th ~11th
16 ~35th ~4th
18 ~31st ~1st

The median boy passes 160 cm at about 13.5 years and the median girl at about 13.9 years; this is the first height on our list that boys usually reach before girls. By 18, a 160 cm girl is near the 31st percentile, while a 160 cm boy is near the 1st.

160 cm in a couple

In a 2013 PLOS ONE study of 12,502 British couples, Stulp and colleagues found mothers averaged 163.75 cm and fathers 177.86 cm, with the man taller in 92.5 percent of pairs. A 160 cm woman is a little below that mothers' average. The authors cite earlier work suggesting both sexes accept a maximum difference of about 17 percent with the man taller; for a 160 cm woman that is about 27 cm, pointing to a partner of roughly 187 cm (6′1.6″) as the edge of the range.

For a 160 cm man, the study's numbers point the other way: only 7.5 percent of its couples had a woman who was as tall as or taller than her partner, and the authors found that this share was lower than random pairing would predict. The 5′3″ vs 5′10″ and 5′3″ vs 6′0″ comparisons show the two most common pairings involving this height.

Practical reference points

  • 160 cm vs the average US woman (161.2 cm): 1.2 cm, half an inch.
  • 160 cm vs the average US man (175.1 cm): 15.1 cm, about 6 inches.
  • 160 cm vs 157 cm: 3 cm; see 157 cm.
  • 160 cm vs 163 cm: 3 cm; see 163 cm.
  • Jockeys: flat-racing jockeys typically stand between about 147 and 170 cm, so 160 cm is near the middle of their range.

The height difference calculator draws any of these to scale, and the height percentile calculator shows where 160 cm sits for any age and sex.
