166 cm compared with average heights
To scale against the average US adult man (175.1 cm, 5′9″) and woman (161.2 cm, 5′3″), measured in NHANES 2021–2023.
For a man
~12thpercentile
166 cm is around the 12th percentile for US men: taller than about 12% of US adult men. It is 9.1 cm (3.6 in) shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Next to an average man, the top of the head reaches about his eyes to nose.
For a woman
~74thpercentile
166 cm is around the 74th percentile for US women: taller than about 74% of US adult women. It is 4.8 cm (1.9 in) taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm). An average woman standing alongside would reach about their forehead / eyebrows.
Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

166 cm in feet and inches
The inch was fixed at exactly 25.4 mm by the international agreement that took effect on July 1, 1959, as NIST explains. That gives:
- 166 ÷ 2.54 = 65.354 inches
- 65.354 ÷ 12 = 5.446, so 5 feet
- 65.354 − 60 = 5.35 inches
- 166 cm = 5′ 5.35″, rounded to 5′5″
An exact 5′5″ is 165.1 cm, so 166 cm is 0.9 cm taller, a little over a third of an inch. The next whole inch, 5′6″, is 167.64 cm, 1.64 cm away. In decimal feet, 166 cm is 5.45 ft.
| Unit | 166 cm |
|---|---|
| Total inches | 65.35 in |
| Feet and inches | 5′ 5.35″ |
| Nearest inch | 5′5″ (165.1 cm) |
| Decimal feet | 5.45 ft |
| Meters | 1.66 m |
| Below 5′6″ | 1.64 cm (0.65 in) |
Because both 165 cm and 166 cm round to 5′5″, anyone converting from a whole-inch height loses some precision. A person who says "five-five" could be anywhere from about 163.9 cm to 166.4 cm. See 5′5″ to cm and 5′6″ to cm for the bracketing heights.
One height, three generations
The most revealing way to look at 166 cm is across age groups. NHANES, run by the National Center for Health Statistics, measures participants in person, and its August 2021–August 2023 report, published in June 2025, gives percentiles for each decade of adult life:
| NHANES 2021–2023 | Women median | 166 cm for women | Men median | 166 cm for men |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ages 20–29 | 163.3 cm | ~64th percentile | 176.1 cm | ~9th |
| Ages 30–39 | 162.8 cm | ~67th | 176.4 cm | ~9th |
| Ages 40–49 | 162.0 cm | ~73rd | 176.2 cm | ~9th |
| Ages 50–59 | 160.8 cm | ~74th | 174.5 cm | ~13th |
| Ages 60–69 | 160.4 cm | ~79th | 175.0 cm | ~12th |
| Ages 70–79 | 157.9 cm | ~89th | 172.7 cm | ~20th |
| Ages 80+ | 156.9 cm | above 90th | 169.9 cm | ~25th |
| All 20+ | 161.2 cm | ~74th | 175.2 cm | ~12th |
Percentiles are interpolated between published values. For women 80 and over the 95th percentile was not published, so the most precise statement is that 166 cm exceeds their 90th percentile of 165.5 cm.
A 166 cm woman in her 20s is taller than roughly two thirds of her peers. The same woman, if she were in her 80s, would be taller than more than nine in ten. For men the shift runs the same way: 166 cm moves from the 9th percentile among younger men to the 25th among men over 80.
Why the older groups are shorter
Two separate effects are mixed together in a cross-sectional survey like NHANES:
- Generational growth. NCD-RisC's estimates for the United States show American women born in 1896 averaging 158.5 cm and those born in 1926 averaging 161.1 cm, rising to 163.6 cm for the 1956 cohort. Someone in their 80s today was born in the 1940s or earlier, when adult heights were still rising.
- Height loss with age. Wikipedia's summary of the research says shrinkage may begin in middle age in some people and tends to be universal in the very old, driven by changes such as disc dehydration, soft-tissue loss and posture. It also notes that excessive height loss can be a symptom of osteoporosis, which is a reason to mention noticeable height loss to a doctor.
Interestingly, NCD-RisC's estimates show almost no change for American women born after 1956 (163.6 cm then, 163.5 cm for those born in 1996). NCD-RisC describes the US as having the earliest plateau of any high-income country. So the gap between younger and middle-aged women in today's NHANES data is small, and most of the drop appears in the oldest groups.
Women at 166 cm: Central and Eastern Europe
The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration combined 1,472 population studies and more than 18.6 million measured people to estimate heights for every birth year from 1896 to 1996. Women born in 1996 average about 166 cm in several Central and Eastern European countries:
| Country | Women born 1896 | Women born 1956 | Women born 1996 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slovenia | 152.5 cm | 163.4 cm | 166.1 cm |
| Ukraine | 154.0 cm | 163.5 cm | 166.3 cm |
| Lithuania | 154.1 cm | 164.1 cm | 166.6 cm |
| Iceland | 158.6 cm | 167.3 cm | 165.9 cm |
| Germany | 156.0 cm | 164.3 cm | 165.9 cm |
Slovenian women gained 13.6 cm over the century. NCD-RisC notes that Eastern European countries kept gaining after growth in Northern Europe and the English-speaking world had stalled, which is visible here: Slovenia, Ukraine and Lithuania all added 2.5 to 3 cm between the 1956 and 1996 cohorts. Iceland moved the other way, from 167.3 cm to 165.9 cm.
The tallest women in the world, in Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and the Czech Republic, average over 168 cm according to NCD-RisC, so 166 cm is about 2 cm short of the world's tallest national averages.
Men at 166 cm: Pakistan, Egypt and much of Africa
For men born in 1996, NCD-RisC estimates an average close to 166 cm in a different set of countries:
| Country | Men born 1896 | Men born 1956 | Men born 1996 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pakistan | 165.7 cm | 167.5 cm | 166.9 cm |
| Egypt | 158.6 cm | 169.7 cm | 166.7 cm |
| Ethiopia | 161.3 cm | 168.4 cm | 166.2 cm |
| South Africa | 165.3 cm | 168.9 cm | 166.7 cm |
| Bolivia | 156.3 cm | 164.7 cm | 166.8 cm |
| Côte d'Ivoire | 162.6 cm | 169.5 cm | 166.5 cm |
Pakistani men gained just 1.2 cm in a century, consistent with Our World in Data's observation that South Asian men had the smallest absolute gains of any region. Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa and Côte d'Ivoire all show men born around the 1950s to 1970s taller than those born in 1996. Our World in Data notes that average male height has reversed in several regions, including sub-Saharan Africa, where heights have fallen since 1970. Bolivia is the exception in this table, with steady gains throughout.
166 cm against the global averages
Our World in Data puts the worldwide average for people born in 1996 at about 171 cm for men and 159 cm for women. A 166 cm person is therefore 7 cm above the average woman on Earth and 5 cm below the average man, slightly closer to the men's figure than to the women's. OWID also notes that men and women worldwide gained about 8 to 9 cm in average height over the last century. On that scale, 166 cm is close to the average man born in 1896 in much of Western Europe (166.9 cm in the United Kingdom, 166.4 cm in France and 167.2 cm in Germany, in the site's NCD-RisC data), and taller than the average woman born in 1996 in every country in the site's data except eleven, all of them in Europe, from Slovenia (166.1 cm) to Latvia (169.8 cm).
The sex difference itself is large and consistent. OWID reports that men are taller than women in every country, about 12 cm on average, with a male-to-female ratio of about 1.07. Multiplying the 166 cm women's averages in Slovenia or Ukraine by that ratio gives roughly 178 cm, close to the 179.8 cm and 178.5 cm that NCD-RisC estimates for men born in 1996 in those two countries.
Teen height, adult outcomes and 166 cm
On the CDC's 2000 growth charts, which give a median and two shape parameters for each month of age, 166 cm corresponds to:
| Age | Girls | Boys |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | ~90th percentile | ~89th percentile |
| 14 | ~80th | ~59th |
| 15 | ~74th | ~30th |
| 16 | ~70th | ~16th |
| 18 | ~67th | ~8th |
Boys typically keep growing until about 18 or 19 and girls until about 15 or 16, according to Wikipedia's summary of growth research, which explains why the boys' column falls so steeply.
Economists have looked at this teenage window specifically. Persico, Postlewaite and Silverman (NBER, 2004; Journal of Political Economy) found that for white men, height as a teenager, rather than adult height, accounted for most of the adult wage premium linked to height, and that part of the effect worked through participation in high school sports and clubs. Case and Paxson (NBER, 2006) reported that childhood height and adult height correlate at about 0.7 and argued that much of the height premium reflects cognitive development in childhood. Both findings describe averages over thousands of people and say nothing about any individual's prospects.

Couples and comparisons
A 166 cm woman is taller than about 12 percent of American men aged 20 and over. In a 2013 PLOS ONE study of 12,502 British couples, Stulp and colleagues found the woman was as tall as or taller than her partner in 7.5 percent of couples, fewer than the 10.2 percent that random pairing would produce. The male-taller preference is real but its effect is modest.
Petite models, who work mainly in commercial rather than runway modeling, are described as being under about 168 cm, so 166 cm falls in that category.
Practical gaps: 166 cm is 4.8 cm taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm) and 9.1 cm shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Try the height difference calculator, compare with 165 cm or 168 cm, or drop a 166 cm figure into the 3D comparison tool.
Clothing and measuring at 166 cm
Petite clothing is generally described as being for women 163 cm (5′4″) or shorter, so a 166 cm woman is 3 cm above that line and usually fits regular lengths. Petite cuts change more than hems; they also shorten sleeves and torsos and narrow the shoulders, so a woman near the boundary may still prefer petite in some garments depending on her proportions.
Since 166 cm sits between two whole-inch labels, a careful measurement is worth taking:
- Stand barefoot on a hard floor, heels together and touching a wall.
- Keep the head, shoulders and buttocks against the wall and look straight ahead.
- Lower a flat book onto the crown, square to the wall, and mark the wall beneath it.
- Measure with a steel tape to the millimeter.
Wikipedia's human height article cites a study in which children lost an average of 1.54 cm between waking and late afternoon, so record the time of day and repeat measurements at the same time. Then use the height converter for exact feet and inches.
