157 cm to feet and inches
The inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm, a definition NIST traces to the international agreement that took effect on July 1, 1959. So:
- 157 ÷ 2.54 = 61.811 inches
- 61.811 ÷ 12 = 5.151, giving 5 feet
- 61.811 − 60 = 1.81 inches
- 157 cm = 5′ 1.81″, which rounds to 5′2″
Exactly 5′2″ is 62 inches, or 157.48 cm. That puts 157 cm about half a centimeter below the five-foot-two mark, a difference of 0.19 inch. In everyday use 157 cm is called 5′2″, and a measurement anywhere from about 156.2 cm to 158.7 cm rounds to the same label.
| Unit | 157 cm |
|---|---|
| Total inches | 61.81 in |
| Feet and inches | 5′ 1.81″ |
| Nearest inch | 5′2″ (157.48 cm) |
| Decimal feet | 5.15 ft |
| Meters | 1.57 m |
| Above 5′0″ | 4.6 cm (1.81 in) |
The decimal-foot figure, 5.15 ft, is sometimes misread as "5 feet 15." It means 5 feet plus 0.15 of a foot, which is 1.8 inches. The 5′2″ to cm page does the reverse conversion.
157 cm is close to the world's average woman
Our World in Data, drawing on the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), puts the global average for women born in 1996 at about 159 cm. 157 cm is only 2 cm below that. It is closer still to the national average in many middle-income countries.
| Country | Average woman, born 1996 | vs 157 cm |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | 158.3 cm | +1.3 cm |
| Thailand | 157.9 cm | +0.9 cm |
| South Africa | 158.0 cm | +1.0 cm |
| Egypt | 157.3 cm | +0.3 cm |
| Venezuela | 157.4 cm | +0.4 cm |
| Mexico | 156.8 cm | −0.2 cm |
| Colombia | 156.9 cm | −0.1 cm |
| Nigeria | 156.3 cm | −0.7 cm |
These estimates come from NCD-RisC's analysis of 1,472 population-based studies covering more than 18.6 million people with measured heights. They describe people by year of birth, so the "1996" figure is the expected adult height of women born that year.
Three different paths to the same height
The countries in that table arrived at roughly 157 cm by very different routes:
- Japan grew fast and then stopped. Japanese women born in 1896 averaged 142.3 cm and those born in 1956 averaged 156.5 cm, a gain of 14 cm in sixty years. Then the rise flattened: 158.5 cm for the 1976 cohort and 158.3 cm for 1996. NCD-RisC notes that Japan's increase stopped for people born after the early 1960s.
- Mexico and Colombia have risen steadily. Mexican women went from 143.5 cm (born 1896) to 153.7 cm (1956) to 156.8 cm (1996), and Colombian women from 144.0 cm to 154.5 cm to 156.9 cm, with gains continuing into the most recent cohorts.
- Nigeria and Ghana peaked and declined. Nigerian women born in 1956 averaged 159.0 cm, taller than those born in 1996 (156.3 cm); in Ghana the figures are 159.8 cm and 157.9 cm. NCD-RisC reports declines of up to about 5 cm from peak in several sub-Saharan African countries, and Our World in Data notes falling average heights in the region since about 1970.
The same 157 cm therefore means "a little below average" in Japan, "almost exactly average" in Mexico, and "about what women born a generation earlier averaged" in Nigeria.
Where 157 cm ranks in the United States
The US reference comes from NHANES, which measures participants in mobile examination centers. Its August 2021–August 2023 report, published in June 2025, puts the average US woman at 161.2 cm, and CDC FastStats summarizes the same survey as 63.5 inches. 157 cm is 4.2 cm (1.7 inches) below that average.
| NHANES 2021–2023 group | Median | 157 cm percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Women 20+ | 161.2 cm | ~28th |
| Women 20–29 | 163.3 cm | ~19th |
| Women 30–39 | 162.8 cm | ~21st |
| Women 50–59 | 160.8 cm | ~28th |
| Women 70–79 | 157.9 cm | ~44th |
| Women 80+ | 156.9 cm | ~50th |
| Men 20+ | 175.2 cm | below 5th |
Percentiles are interpolated between the published values and should be read as approximate.
The CDC's 2000 growth reference offers a second view for young adults. At age 20 its median for women is 163.3 cm, and 157 cm sits about one standard deviation below that, around the 16th percentile. That reference was built from older survey data than NHANES 2021–2023, yet it lands within a few points of the measured figure for women in their 20s, which suggests the height distribution of young American women has changed little.
Among women aged 80 and over, 157 cm is essentially the median (156.9 cm): half are taller and half shorter. Among women in their 20s, it is roughly the 19th percentile. Generational growth and height loss in old age both contribute to that spread. For men, 157 cm is below the 5th percentile at every age; the lowest published 5th-percentile value for men, among those 80 and over, is 158.3 cm.
Celebrities near 157 cm
Two famous names in the site's data sit within a centimeter of 157 cm:
| Person | Height in our data | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ariana Grande | 157.5 cm | Has given different figures over the years; Billboard lists 5′2″ |
| Kevin Hart | 158 cm | 5′2″ is the barefoot figure most often reported |
Ariana Grande's case is a good example of why celebrity heights vary between sources: our data notes a 5′3″ figure she gave in 2009 and a 5′2″ figure listed by Billboard. Kevin Hart is one of the best-known men at this height; his page summarizes the figures that have been reported, including his own description of his height in shoes. Next to the average US man at 175.1 cm, a 158 cm man is about 17 cm (6.7 inches) shorter.

157 cm and partner height
Couple studies give a sense of what 157 cm means when two people stand side by side. In the largest analysis of real couples, Stulp and colleagues (PLOS ONE, 2013) used 12,502 British parents from the Millennium Cohort Study. Mothers averaged 163.75 cm (standard deviation 6.97 cm) and fathers 177.86 cm (standard deviation 7.42 cm), and the average gap within couples was 14.11 cm.
At 157 cm, a woman in that sample would be 6.75 cm below the average mother, about one standard deviation, which corresponds to roughly the 17th percentile. That is very close to the NHANES result for American women in their 20s and 30s, which is a useful cross-check between a British self-reported sample and an American measured one.
Three findings from the study frame the numbers:
- The man was taller in 92.5 percent of couples, versus 89.8 percent if the same men and women had been paired randomly. The preference shows up, but its effect on actual pairings is modest.
- Most exceptions are small. Couples where the woman is taller usually differ by only a little.
- A cited upper comfort limit of about 17 percent. The authors cite earlier work in which both sexes accepted a maximum height difference of roughly 17 percent with the man taller. For a 157 cm woman, 17 percent is about 26.7 cm, which points to a partner of around 183.7 cm, or just over 6′0″, as the edge of that range.
An average British father in the sample, at 177.86 cm, would be about 20.9 cm taller than a 157 cm partner, comfortably inside that limit. The 5′2″ vs 5′10″ page shows almost exactly that pairing.
157 cm at 13: the growth-spurt crossover
The CDC's 2000 stature-for-age charts give a median and two shape parameters for each month from age 2 to 20. Converting 157 cm with the CDC's z-score method shows that this is the height where boys and girls cross:
| Age | 157 cm for a girl | 157 cm for a boy |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | ~96th percentile | ~97th percentile |
| 12 | ~77th | ~85th |
| 13 | ~48th | ~53rd |
| 14 | ~30th | ~19th |
| 15 | ~23rd | ~5th |
| 18 | ~17th | below 1st |
The median girl reaches 157 cm at about 13.0 years and the median boy at about 13.1 years, so at 13, a 157 cm child of either sex is almost exactly average. From there the paths split. Wikipedia's summary of growth research says girls' growth largely ends around 15 to 16 and boys' around 18 to 19, which is why a 157 cm 18-year-old girl is around the 17th percentile and a boy of the same height is below the 1st. The height percentile calculator gives exact percentiles by age in months, and the height calculator estimates adult height.
Five-two in working life
Cabin crew history. Airlines have long set height ranges so flight attendants can reach overhead equipment. A 1966 Eastern Airlines advertisement asked for applicants at least 5′2″ and no taller than 5′9″. At 157 cm, a candidate would have missed that minimum by about half a centimeter, a reminder of how arbitrary round-number thresholds can be. Earlier, a 1936 New York Times description of airline hostess requirements specified 5′0″ to 5′4″. Today the range typically quoted is above about 152 cm and below about 185 cm.
Clothing. Petite sizing is generally described as being for women 163 cm (5′4″) or shorter, with proportions adjusted for shorter limbs and torso. At 157 cm, a woman is 6 cm inside that range. Petite fashion is credited to designer Hannah Troy, who developed it in the 1940s after finding that most women did not match standard proportions.
How 157 cm compares with nearby heights
Small differences are easier to picture with concrete gaps:
- 157 cm vs 155 cm: 2 cm (0.8 inch); see 155 cm in feet.
- 157 cm vs 160 cm: 3 cm (1.2 inches); see 160 cm in feet.
- 157 cm vs the average US woman (161.2 cm): 4.2 cm (1.7 inches).
- 157 cm vs the average US man (175.1 cm): 18.1 cm (7.1 inches).
- 157 cm vs 6′2″ (188 cm): about 31 cm; the 5′2″ vs 6′2″ comparison shows that pairing to scale.
- 157 cm vs 5′10″ (177.8 cm): about 21 cm; see 5′2″ vs 5′10″.
The height difference calculator works out any of these gaps and shows where one person's eye line falls on the other.
Measuring to the half-centimeter
Because 157 cm sits just under the 5′2″ mark, a careful measurement decides which label you can honestly use. Measure barefoot on a hard floor with your heels, buttocks and shoulders against a wall. Look straight ahead, lower a flat book onto your head square to the wall, mark the underside, and measure with a steel tape. Height varies slightly over the day, so repeat at the same time if you are tracking changes. Then convert with the height converter instead of rounding before converting.
