For a man

<5thpercentile

150 cm is below the 5th percentile for US men: shorter than about 95% of US adult men. It is 25.1 cm (9.9 in) shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Next to an average man, the top of the head reaches about his chin.

For a woman

~6thpercentile

150 cm is around the 6th percentile for US women: taller than about 6% of US adult women. It is 11.2 cm (4.4 in) shorter than the average US woman (161.2 cm).

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

Converting 150 cm to feet and inches

The inch has been fixed at exactly 25.4 mm since the 1959 international agreement described by NIST, so converting centimeters means dividing by 2.54:

  1. 150 ÷ 2.54 = 59.055 inches
  2. 59.055 ÷ 12 = 4.921, giving 4 whole feet
  3. 59.055 − 48 = 11.06 inches
  4. 150 cm = 4′ 11.06″, or 4′11″ to the nearest inch

That last inch is the interesting part. 4′11″ is 149.86 cm, a hair (0.14 cm) under 150, while five feet is 152.4 cm. So 150 cm is firmly a "four-eleven" height, and a person who measures 150 cm and rounds up to 5′0″ is adding 2.4 cm. In decimal feet it is 4.92 ft, and in meters it is a tidy 1.50 m, which is why 150 cm appears so often as a cut-off on forms outside the US.

Unit 150 cm
Total inches 59.06 in
Feet and inches 4′ 11.06″
Nearest inch 4′11″ (149.86 cm)
Decimal feet 4.92 ft
Meters 1.50 m
Shortfall to 5′0″ 2.4 cm (0.94 in)

See the 4′11″ to cm page for the reverse conversion, or 152 cm, the nearest page above, for the height that rounds to five feet.

Where 150 cm falls for American adults

The National Center for Health Statistics measures heights in person through NHANES. Its August 2021–August 2023 report, published in June 2025, is the newest reference for US adults, and it gives percentiles by sex and ten-year age group.

NHANES 2021–2023 group Median 150 cm percentile
Women 20+ 161.2 cm ~6th
Women 20–29 163.3 cm below 5th
Women 40–49 162.0 cm ~5th
Women 60–69 160.4 cm ~6th
Women 70–79 157.9 cm ~8th
Women 80+ 156.9 cm ~18th
Men 20+ 175.2 cm below 5th

Percentiles here are interpolated between the published 5th, 10th and 15th percentile values, so treat them as approximate.

The age pattern is the striking part of this table. Among women in their 20s, 150 cm is shorter than the 5th percentile cut-off of 153.2 cm. Among women 80 and older, nearly one in five is 150 cm or shorter. Two things drive that gap: people in a cross-sectional survey who are 80 today were born when average heights were lower, and height tends to decrease late in life. For men, the 5th percentile in every age group is above 158 cm, so a 150 cm man is rare at any age.

Average women in several countries are about 150 cm

Outside the US, 150 cm is close to the national average for women in a number of countries. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) combined 1,472 population studies with measured heights from more than 18.6 million people to estimate average adult height by year of birth. For women born in 1996:

Country Average woman (born 1996) Difference from 150 cm
Guatemala 149.4 cm −0.6 cm
Philippines 149.6 cm −0.4 cm
Bangladesh 150.8 cm +0.8 cm
Nepal 150.9 cm +0.9 cm
Laos 151.3 cm +1.3 cm
India 152.6 cm +2.6 cm

NCD-RisC names Guatemalan women the shortest in the world in that cohort. The Philippine figure has its own story: Our World in Data notes that the gap between Filipino men and women doubled over the century, from 7 cm to 14 cm, because men's average height rose while women's barely moved. Women born in the Philippines in 1896 averaged 147.9 cm and those born in 1996 averaged 149.6 cm in the site's NCD-RisC data, a gain of under 2 cm in a hundred years.

Globally, Our World in Data puts the average woman born in 1996 at about 159 cm, so 150 cm is roughly 9 cm below the world average for women.

150 cm during childhood

Using the CDC's 2000 stature-for-age charts, which give the median (M) and two shape parameters (L and S) for every month of age, the median girl reaches 150 cm at about 11.9 years and the median boy at about 12.2 years. Converting 150 cm to a percentile at each birthday shows how fast that changes during the early-teen growth spurt:

Age 150 cm for a girl 150 cm for a boy
10 ~96th percentile ~95th percentile
11 ~78th ~81st
12 ~42nd ~54th
13 ~15th ~21st
14 ~6th ~4th
18 ~2nd below 1st

At 12, a 150 cm girl is almost exactly average; by 18 the same height is around the 2nd percentile on the CDC reference. MedlinePlus defines short stature in children as at least two standard deviations below average, or below about the 2.3rd percentile, and notes that most short children have no medical problem: many have short parents or a constitutional delay in puberty and catch up later. If a child seems much shorter than peers or seems to have stopped growing, MedlinePlus advises talking to the child's healthcare provider. The height percentile calculator gives exact percentiles by age in months.

150 cm and medical height thresholds

Several commonly quoted thresholds sit within a few centimeters of 150 cm, and it is worth being precise about what they mean:

  • 4′10″ (147.3 cm): Little People of America describes dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4′10″ or shorter. 150 cm is about 3 cm above that line. The threshold describes the outcome of a condition, not a diagnosis by height.
  • The 2.3rd percentile: the MedlinePlus definition of short stature for children. On the CDC reference at age 20, 150 cm is about 2.05 standard deviations below the female median of 163.3 cm, which is right around that boundary for a young woman, and far beyond it for a young man.

None of these numbers says anything about health on its own. They are statistical descriptions, and doctors interpret them together with growth history and family heights.

Living at 150 cm: cars, cabins and the racetrack

Everyday design is usually aimed at a middle range of adult bodies, so 150 cm adults notice a few specific things.

Driving. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety advises that drivers sit with their chest at least 10 inches from the center of the steering wheel. Short drivers who need the seat far forward to reach the pedals can often get that distance by reclining the seatback slightly. IIHS notes that short and elderly drivers were among those vulnerable to injuries from older frontal airbags, that automakers began depowering airbags with 1998 models, and that advanced airbags that adjust to occupant size became required by the 2007 model year. For older cars, IIHS mentions pedal extenders as an option.

Cabin crew. Airlines need flight attendants to reach overhead safety equipment, so the typical height range quoted is above about 152 cm and below about 185 cm. That puts 150 cm just under the usual floor. The history is telling: a 1936 newspaper description of airline hostess requirements specified 5′0″ to 5′4″, and a 1966 Eastern Airlines advertisement asked for at least 5′2″.

Horse racing. Jockeys are a rare profession where 150 cm is an advantage. Flat-racing jockeys are typically between about 4′10″ (147 cm) and 5′7″ (170 cm), and the limiting factor is riding weight, usually around 49 to 54 kg on the flat. There is no formal height limit.

Clothing and fit at 150 cm

Standard US women's sizing is drafted around a taller figure, which is why "petite" exists as a separate size category. Petite sizing is generally described as being for women 163 cm (5′4″) or shorter, and it adjusts proportions as well as length: shorter sleeves, a higher waist placement and narrower shoulders. Its origin is usually credited to the designer Hannah Troy in the 1940s, who found that most women she measured did not fit standard proportions and were "short in the waist."

At 150 cm, a woman is 13 cm below that petite ceiling, so even petite lines can run long in the leg and sleeve. In practice that can mean taking up trouser hems or choosing styles without a fixed waist seam. The tables on retailer size charts are the reliable reference here, because petite inseams and torso lengths are not standardized across brands.

150 cm in a couple

Most partners of a 150 cm woman will be taller, simply because of where 150 cm sits in the distribution. Research on real couples shows how strong that pattern is in general. Using 12,502 British couples from the Millennium Cohort Study, Stulp and colleagues (PLOS ONE, 2013) found the man was taller in 92.5 percent of pairs, slightly more than the 89.8 percent that random pairing would produce. The average woman in that sample reported 163.75 cm and the average man 177.86 cm, a gap of about 14 cm.

A 150 cm woman with a partner of that average male height would be about 28 cm (11 inches) shorter, roughly double the typical gap. The same study notes that the "male-taller norm" is real but modest, and that most deviations from it are small. For couple-specific visuals, the 5′0″ vs 6′0″ comparison shows what a gap of a foot looks like for eye contact and photos.

Famous figures and characters near 150 cm

The site's catalog of celebrities with their own pages has nobody listed within a centimeter or two of 150 cm; the shortest featured people, such as Kevin Hart at 158 cm, are a good 8 cm taller. Among fictional characters, Shinobu Kocho from Demon Slayer is listed at 151 cm, only 1 cm above this page's height. See her height page for the databook source.

To see how 150 cm looks next to anyone in our catalog, place a custom 150 cm figure in the 3D height comparison tool. Next to the average US woman (161.2 cm) the difference is 11.2 cm, about 4.4 inches; next to the average US man (175.1 cm) it is 25.1 cm, about 9.9 inches. The height difference calculator draws those gaps to scale.

Getting an accurate 150 cm reading

At heights where one centimeter decides whether you write 4′11″ or 5′0″, a careful measurement is worth the effort:

  • Stand barefoot on a hard floor, heels together and touching a wall.
  • Keep the back of the head, shoulders and buttocks against the wall, and look straight ahead.
  • Lower a hardcover book flat onto the crown, keep it square to the wall, and mark the underside.
  • Measure from floor to mark with a metal tape.
  • Measure in the morning and again in the afternoon if you want to see your personal range; most people are slightly taller right after getting up.

Then convert the result exactly with the height converter rather than rounding twice.

Frequently asked questions

Is 150 cm short for a woman?

In the United States, yes: NHANES 2021–2023 puts 150 cm at roughly the 6th percentile for women aged 20 and over. Globally it is much closer to normal, because women born in 1996 average 149.4 cm in Guatemala, 149.6 cm in the Philippines and about 151 cm in Bangladesh and Nepal, according to NCD-RisC.

Is 150 cm 4′11″ or 5′0″?

150 cm is 4 feet 11.06 inches, so it is 4′11″. Five feet is 152.4 cm, which is 2.4 cm (almost an inch) taller than 150 cm.

At what age do children reach 150 cm?

On the CDC 2000 growth charts the median girl reaches 150 cm at about 11.9 years and the median boy at about 12.2 years. At age 12, 150 cm is near the 42nd percentile for girls and the 54th for boys.

Can a 150 cm person drive safely?

Yes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety advises all drivers to keep their chest at least 10 inches from the center of the steering wheel; short drivers can often get there by reclining the seatback slightly, and pedal extenders are an option in older cars.

Is 150 cm short enough to be a jockey?

Height is not the deciding factor. Flat-racing jockeys are typically between about 147 cm and 170 cm tall, and what matters is riding weight, usually around 49 to 54 kg on the flat.

Why are older American women more often 150 cm tall?

In NHANES 2021–2023, 150 cm is below the 5th percentile for women in their 20s but near the 18th percentile for women aged 80 and over. Older people were born when average heights were lower, and many lose some height with age.
