For a man

<5thpercentile

155 cm is below the 5th percentile for US men: shorter than about 95% of US adult men. It is 20.1 cm (7.9 in) shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Next to an average man, the top of the head reaches about his mouth.

For a woman

~19thpercentile

155 cm is around the 19th percentile for US women: taller than about 19% of US adult women. It is 6.2 cm (2.4 in) shorter than the average US woman (161.2 cm).

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

155 cm is 5′1″, almost to the millimeter

Most metric heights land awkwardly between two whole inches. 155 cm is an exception. With the inch fixed at exactly 25.4 mm, as NIST describes in its summary of the 1959 international yard agreement:

  1. 155 ÷ 2.54 = 61.024 inches
  2. 61.024 ÷ 12 = 5.085, so 5 whole feet (60 inches)
  3. 61.024 − 60 = 1.02 inches
  4. 155 cm = 5′ 1.02″

Five feet one inch is 61 inches, which is 154.94 cm. The difference between 155 cm and 5′1″ is 0.06 cm, less than a millimeter, so the two can be used as exact equivalents for any practical purpose. That makes 155 cm one of the cleanest metric-to-imperial matches in the height range.

Unit 155 cm
Total inches 61.02 in
Feet and inches 5′ 1.02″
Nearest inch 5′1″ (154.94 cm)
Decimal feet 5.09 ft
Meters 1.55 m
Above 5′0″ 2.6 cm (1.02 in)

In decimal feet, 155 cm is 5.09 ft. Remember that the ".09" is a fraction of a foot, roughly one inch, not nine inches. The reverse conversion is on the 5′1″ to cm page.

Famous people at 155 cm

Two well-known entertainers in the site's data are listed at exactly 155 cm:

Person Field Listed height Where the figure comes from
Jenna Ortega Actress, born 2002 155 cm (5′1″) Wikidata (1.55 m), citing a 2022 online biography
Lady Gaga Singer, born 1986 155 cm (5′1″) Wikidata (1.55 m), citing a UK newspaper
Ariana Grande Singer, born 1993 157.5 cm Interview quoted in our data

Both Ortega and Gaga are recorded on Wikidata at this height, which is the source the site uses for their headline figures; each person's own page discusses the sourcing in more detail. Heights of public figures are rarely measured under controlled conditions, so treat any celebrity height as a reported figure rather than a measurement.

Standing Ortega or Gaga next to the average US man (175.1 cm in NHANES 2021–2023) gives a difference of about 20 cm, or 8 inches. The 5′1″ vs 6′1″ comparison shows a full one-foot gap, and the 5′1″ vs 5′7″ comparison a six-inch gap.

How 155 cm ranks among US adults

NHANES, run by the National Center for Health Statistics, measures participants' heights in person. The August 2021–August 2023 results, published in June 2025, give these comparisons for 155 cm:

NHANES 2021–2023 group Median 155 cm percentile
Women 20+ 161.2 cm ~19th
Women 20–29 163.3 cm ~10th
Women 30–39 162.8 cm ~16th
Women 40–49 162.0 cm ~19th
Women 60–69 160.4 cm ~22nd
Women 70–79 157.9 cm ~29th
Women 80+ 156.9 cm ~42nd
Men 20+ 175.2 cm below 5th

Values are interpolated between published percentiles and are approximate.

Overall, roughly one adult American woman in five is 155 cm or shorter. Among women over 80, whose median is 156.9 cm, 155 cm is close to typical. The CDC's 2000 growth reference, which ends at age 20, gives a similar answer for young women: 155 cm is about 1.28 standard deviations below the female median of 163.3 cm, or right at the 10th percentile, matching the NHANES figure for women in their 20s.

For men the picture is very different. The NHANES 5th percentile for men aged 20 and over is 162.2 cm, so a 155 cm man is shorter than at least 95 percent of American men.

155 cm for a man

For men, 155 cm is unusual almost everywhere. NCD-RisC identifies the shortest men in the 1996 birth cohort as those in Timor-Leste, Yemen and Laos, at roughly 160 cm on average, so even in the shortest-averaging countries a 155 cm man is about 5 cm below the national mean. In the site's NCD-RisC data, Yemeni men born in 1996 average 159.9 cm and Laotian men 160.5 cm.

Yemen is also an example of the reversal discussed below: men born there in 1956 averaged 164.4 cm, and men born in 1996 averaged 159.9 cm, a drop of 4.5 cm in forty years. Women's average height in Yemen fell much less over the same period, from 154.4 cm to 154.0 cm.

In the United States the numbers are starker. Even among men aged 80 and over, the shortest group in NHANES 2021–2023, the 5th percentile is 158.3 cm. On the CDC 2000 growth reference at age 20, 155 cm is about three standard deviations below the male median of 176.8 cm, placing it around the 0.1st percentile. By that reference, a 155 cm young man is far rarer than a 173 cm young woman, who sits around the 93rd percentile for her sex.

These numbers are descriptive only. Short stature in an adult man is not in itself a health problem, and a doctor rather than a percentile table is the right source for any medical question.

A global women's average: 155 cm in Africa and western Asia

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) estimated adult heights for 200 countries from 1,472 population studies and more than 18.6 million measured people. For women born in 1996, 155 cm is close to the national average in a band of countries across eastern and central Africa and western and southern Asia.

Country Women born 1956 Women born 1996 Change
Ethiopia 157.3 cm 155.7 cm −1.6 cm
Tanzania 156.9 cm 155.9 cm −1.0 cm
Zambia 159.3 cm 155.8 cm −3.5 cm
DR Congo 158.4 cm 155.2 cm −3.2 cm
Afghanistan 156.2 cm 155.1 cm −1.1 cm
Saudi Arabia 156.1 cm 155.9 cm −0.2 cm

The striking pattern in that table is the minus sign. In most of the world, women born in 1996 are taller than women born forty years earlier. In several sub-Saharan African countries, they are shorter. NCD-RisC reports that a number of sub-Saharan countries declined by around 5 cm from their peak, and Our World in Data notes that average heights in sub-Saharan Africa have fallen since about 1970.

The men's numbers show the same reversal. In the site's NCD-RisC data, Zambian men born in 1956 averaged 169.3 cm and those born in 1996 averaged 166.5 cm; for the Democratic Republic of the Congo the figures are 169.1 cm and 166.8 cm. Our World in Data describes nutrition as one of the strongest determinants of height and finds child mortality strongly correlated with male height, which is why population height is used as a broad indicator of living conditions in childhood.

Globally, Our World in Data puts women born in 1996 at about 159 cm on average, so 155 cm is about 4 cm below the world average. The OWID chart of height by year of birth lets you trace any country's line over the century.

155 cm during the teen growth spurt

The CDC's 2000 growth charts list, for every month of age, a median height and two parameters that describe the shape of the distribution. Using the CDC's published z-score formula, 155 cm translates to these percentiles:

Age 155 cm for a girl 155 cm for a boy
11 ~93rd percentile ~94th percentile
12 ~68th ~78th
13 ~37th ~43rd
14 ~20th ~13th
15 ~14th ~3rd
18 ~11th below 1st

The median girl reaches 155 cm at about 12.6 years and the median boy at about 12.9 years. After 14, the lines separate sharply: boys keep growing for several more years, while girls' growth slows. By 18 a 155 cm girl is near the 11th percentile, while a 155 cm boy is below the 1st. The height percentile calculator handles exact ages in months, and a pediatrician should look at a child's growth over time if there is any concern.

155 cm in relationships

Height preferences are a frequent reason people look up a specific number. The most robust data come from real couples rather than surveys of ideals. In a 2013 PLOS ONE study of 12,502 British couples from the Millennium Cohort Study, Stulp and colleagues found:

  • The man was taller in 92.5 percent of couples, compared with 89.8 percent expected if the same men and women had been paired at random.
  • The average height difference between partners was 14.11 cm.
  • Mothers averaged 163.75 cm and fathers 177.86 cm, both self-reported.

A 155 cm woman sits about 8.75 cm below that sample's average mother. If she were paired with the sample's average father, the gap would be about 22.9 cm (9 inches), well above the average partner difference. The study's authors note that the preference for a taller man is real but that its effect on who actually pairs up is modest, and that most couples who break the pattern do so narrowly.

Work, sport and clothing at 155 cm

Horse racing. Flat-racing jockeys typically stand between about 147 cm and 170 cm. At 155 cm, a rider is near the middle of that range. There is no formal height limit; riding weight is what matters, and flat jockeys usually ride at about 49 to 54 kg.

Clothing. Petite sizing, generally for women 163 cm (5′4″) and shorter, was designed to adjust proportions as well as length, including shorter sleeves and a higher waist. At 155 cm a woman is 8 cm inside the petite range. The category traces back to designer Hannah Troy's work in the 1940s.

Everyday reach. Next to the average US woman (161.2 cm), 155 cm is 6.2 cm (2.4 inches) shorter; next to the average US man (175.1 cm), 20.1 cm (7.9 inches). The height difference calculator draws any two heights to scale.

Measuring and comparing 155 cm

Because 155 cm and 5′1″ are interchangeable, the main source of error is the measurement itself rather than the conversion. For a reliable reading, stand barefoot with heels, buttocks and shoulders touching a wall, look straight ahead, press a flat book onto the crown and mark the wall beneath it. Measure the mark with a steel tape and repeat once to confirm.

Self-reported heights deserve some caution at this level. The authors of the Millennium Cohort couple study point out that people tend to slightly overstate their height when asked, which is one reason surveys such as NHANES send trained staff to measure people instead. If you are comparing your own 155 cm with a friend's stated 5′2″, the real gap may be smaller than the 2.5 cm the labels suggest, or it may be none at all. Measured heights on both sides are the only fair comparison, ideally taken at the same time of day and on the same hard floor.

Once you have the number, place a 155 cm figure next to celebrities, characters or landmarks in the 3D height comparison tool, or check how it compares with the average woman in another country on the average height by country pages.
