For a man

<5thpercentile

152 cm is below the 5th percentile for US men: shorter than about 95% of US adult men. It is 23.1 cm (9.1 in) shorter than the average US man (175.1 cm). Next to an average man, the top of the head reaches about his chin.

For a woman

~10thpercentile

152 cm is around the 10th percentile for US women: taller than about 10% of US adult women. It is 9.2 cm (3.6 in) shorter than the average US woman (161.2 cm).

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

152 cm in feet: just under five feet

The conversion rests on one fixed number. NIST notes that since July 1, 1959, the inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 mm, which makes one inch exactly 2.54 cm. For 152 cm:

  • 152 ÷ 2.54 = 59.843 inches
  • 59.843 ÷ 12 = 4.987, so 4 whole feet
  • 59.843 − 48 = 11.84 inches
  • 152 cm = 4′ 11.84″, which rounds to 5′0″

Here is the detail that makes 152 cm worth its own page. Five feet is exactly 60 inches, or 152.4 cm. So 152 cm falls 0.4 cm short of five feet, about a sixth of an inch, yet it rounds to 5′0″ because 11.84 inches is closer to 12 than to 11. In practice, almost everyone who measures 152 cm describes themselves as five feet tall, and that is a fair rounding. Strictly, though, the true five-foot mark sits between 152 and 153 cm.

Unit 152 cm
Total inches 59.84 in
Feet and inches 4′ 11.84″
Nearest inch 5′0″ (152.4 cm)
Decimal feet 4.99 ft
Meters 1.52 m
Gap to exactly 5′0″ 0.4 cm (0.16 in)

The decimal-feet value, 4.99 ft, shows the same thing from another direction: it is just under 5.00. The reverse conversion is on the 5′0″ to cm page.

How common is 152 cm among American women?

The National Center for Health Statistics measures Americans in person through NHANES. In its June 2025 report covering August 2021 to August 2023, the average height for women aged 20 and over is 161.2 cm; CDC FastStats summarizes the same survey as 63.5 inches for women and 68.9 inches for men. Against that, 152 cm is 9.2 cm (3.6 inches) below the average woman.

NHANES 2021–2023 10th percentile Median 152 cm percentile
Women 20+ 152.0 cm 161.2 cm ~10th
Women 20–29 155.1 cm 163.3 cm below 5th
Women 30–39 152.8 cm 162.8 cm ~9th
Women 50–59 152.6 cm 160.8 cm ~9th
Women 70–79 150.7 cm 157.9 cm ~14th
Women 80+ 145.9 cm 156.9 cm ~29th

The overall 10th percentile for adult women is exactly 152.0 cm. That gives a clean way to describe this height: about one American woman in ten is 152 cm or shorter. For men, the 5th percentile is 162.2 cm, so a 152 cm man is shorter than at least 95 percent of US men.

The spread by age is wide. A woman in her 20s at 152 cm is in the shortest twentieth of her peers, while a woman over 80 at the same height is shorter than only about 29 percent of women her age. Part of that reflects the decades in which each group grew up, and part reflects height lost in old age; a single cross-sectional survey cannot separate the two cleanly.

On the CDC's 2000 growth reference at age 20, the median for women is 163.3 cm, and 152 cm sits about 1.7 standard deviations below it, around the 4th percentile. That reference is older than NHANES 2021–2023, which explains why the two numbers differ slightly.

Around the world, 152 cm is an average height for women

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimated average adult height for 200 countries using 1,472 population-based studies and measurements from more than 18.6 million people. Several large countries have an average woman within a centimeter of 152 cm.

Country Women born 1896 Women born 1996 Century change
India 148.0 cm 152.6 cm +4.6 cm
Indonesia 144.7 cm 152.8 cm +8.1 cm
Peru 141.5 cm 152.9 cm +11.4 cm
Cambodia — 152.9 cm —
Laos 144.7 cm 151.3 cm +6.6 cm

India alone means that hundreds of millions of women are close to this height. Its century gain for women, 4.6 cm in the site's NCD-RisC data, is modest next to Peru's 11.4 cm, and both are far below the 20.2 cm gained by South Korean women, the largest increase NCD-RisC found. Our World in Data notes that South Asian men had the smallest absolute gains of any region over the century, and the women's figures for India follow a similar pattern.

The men in these countries are not much taller in absolute terms either. In the same NCD-RisC estimates, men born in 1996 average 164.9 cm in India, 163.6 cm in Indonesia and 165.2 cm in Peru, so the typical gap between a 152 cm woman and an average man there is around 11 to 13 cm, close to the global figure of about 12 cm that Our World in Data reports for the difference between men and women.

For comparison, Our World in Data puts the average woman born in 1996 worldwide at about 159 cm. So 152 cm is roughly 7 cm below the global average, but squarely average in much of South and Southeast Asia and the Andes.

152 cm through childhood

The CDC growth charts publish the median height (M) plus two shape parameters (L and S) for each month of age, and the CDC explains how to turn any measurement into a z-score and percentile with them. Applying that method to 152 cm:

Age 152 cm for a girl 152 cm for a boy
11 ~85th percentile ~88th percentile
12 ~53rd ~64th
13 ~22nd ~29th
14 ~10th ~7th
16 ~5th below 1st
18 ~4th below 1st

The median girl reaches 152 cm at about 12.1 years and the median boy at about 12.5 years. In other words, 152 cm is the typical height of a seventh grader. Girls usually reach it a few months earlier because their growth spurt starts sooner; Wikipedia's summary of the research puts the start of the female spurt around age 10 and the male spurt around age 12.

Five feet as a threshold

Because "five feet" is such a round number, it shows up as a cut-off in many places, and 152 cm sits right on it.

Airline cabin crew. Airlines need flight attendants to reach overhead safety equipment. The range usually quoted is above about 152 cm and below about 185 cm. History shows how the number has moved: a 1936 New York Times description of airline hostess requirements specified a height of 5′0″ to 5′4″, and a 1966 Eastern Airlines advertisement required at least 5′2″ and no more than 5′9″. At 152 cm, a candidate is right at the commonly quoted floor, and the exact rule depends on the airline.

Clothing. Petite sizing is usually described as being for women 163 cm (5′4″) or under, and it changes proportions as well as length. At 152 cm a woman is 11 cm under that line, so petite collections are generally the starting point. The concept is credited to designer Hannah Troy in the 1940s, who chose the word "petite" because she liked its sound.

Self-reported surveys. Because 152 cm rounds to 5′0″ and 5′0″ is a memorable figure, it is a height people often report rather than measure. Researchers who work with self-reported heights, such as the authors of the couple study described below, note that people tend to slightly overstate their height, so a self-described "five feet" may well be a measured 151 or 152 cm.

A five-foot woman in couple research

The largest study of real couples' heights is a useful lens for 152 cm. Stulp and colleagues, writing in PLOS ONE in 2013, analyzed 12,502 British parents from the Millennium Cohort Study. Mothers in the sample reported an average height of 163.75 cm with a standard deviation of 6.97 cm, and fathers averaged 177.86 cm with a standard deviation of 7.42 cm.

Placing 152 cm in that distribution is a small exercise in arithmetic. It is 11.75 cm below the mothers' mean, or about 1.7 standard deviations, which corresponds to roughly the 5th percentile if heights are close to normally distributed. That is very near the NHANES result for American women in their 20s, a reassuring cross-check from a completely different country and method.

The study's main findings frame what a five-foot woman can expect:

  • The man was taller in 92.5 percent of couples, slightly above the 89.8 percent that random pairing of the same people would produce.
  • The average partner height difference was 14.11 cm.
  • The authors cite earlier work in which both sexes accepted a maximum difference of about 17 percent (man taller).

Seventeen percent of 152 cm is 25.8 cm, which puts that cited upper limit at about 177.8 cm, almost exactly the average father in the sample. In other words, an average-height British man would sit right at the edge of the commonly cited comfort range for a five-foot partner, while a woman of average height would have a lot more room. The authors stress that the male-taller pattern is real but modest, and that most couples who break it do so by small margins.

Measuring yourself at the five-foot line

At 152 cm, a few millimeters decide whether you are "under five feet" or "five feet." Height varies during the day: one study summarized in Wikipedia's human height article found children lost an average of 1.54 cm between getting out of bed and late afternoon. So the same person can measure 152.5 cm in the morning and 151.5 cm in the evening. For a consistent number:

  1. Measure barefoot, heels against a wall, standing straight and looking ahead.
  2. Rest a flat book on the top of the head, square to the wall, and mark beneath it.
  3. Measure the mark with a steel tape to the millimeter.
  4. Note the time of day and repeat at the same time if you compare later.
