Kobe Bryant's height: 6′6″ for 20 seasons

Kobe Bryant was listed by the NBA at 198 cm (6′6″) and 212 pounds (96 kg), the figures NBA.com still shows on his player page and the values this site uses. He carried that listing for his entire 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers, from his arrival as a 17-year-old in 1996 to his final game in April 2016, a span long enough that the listing stayed fixed while the league's measuring rules changed around it.

Unlike many players drafted from college, Kobe has no widely published combine measurement. He came straight from Lower Merion High School outside Philadelphia and was evaluated through private workouts. The best-known of these, recounted in an ESPN feature republished by ABC7, took place in early June 1996 at the Inglewood YMCA. That account describes a "skinny" 17-year-old who had added 10 to 15 pounds of muscle in the preceding year to answer concerns that he was too slight, and notes explicitly that he was not 6′8″. In other words, the 6′6″ listing was already the working assumption when the Lakers acquired him.

Listed height versus on-court height

Because Kobe retired in 2016, he never went through the league's 2019 process of physician-certified, shoes-off measurements, so his listing reflects the conventions of his era. Before 2019, NBA listings were frequently based on in-shoe heights, and basketball shoes typically add about an inch. If that applied to Kobe, his barefoot height may have been a little under 6′6″, and his on-court height in sneakers about 6′6″ to 6′7″. We have not found a published barefoot measurement to settle the question, so 198 cm remains the best-supported figure.

What matters for comparisons is consistency. Michael Jordan, Kobe's most common comparison, also played before the 2019 rule and carries the same 6′6″ listing from the same era, so comparing the two listings is a fair, like-for-like comparison. Comparing Kobe with a current player listed under the newer shoes-off rule, such as Devin Booker, who is now listed at 6′5″ by the NBA, can make Kobe look slightly taller than he would have measured under identical conditions.

The perfect size for a shooting guard

Kobe's 6′6″ frame sits at the center of what NBA scouts have long regarded as the ideal size for a shooting guard. He was tall enough to rise over smaller guards on his turnaround jumper and long enough to defend wings, but light and quick enough to handle the ball and play off screens. That combination made him a 15-time All-NBA selection and a 12-time All-Defensive pick.

His scoring style depended on those proportions. Kobe's signature moves, the turnaround fadeaway from the post, the jab-step jumper from the wing and the pull-up from the elbow, are all moves that a 6′6″ player can get off over a 6′2″ guard and, with footwork, over a 6′8″ forward. He was known for studying film obsessively, including how to create space against defenders both taller and shorter than himself.

On January 22, 2006, he scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, still the second-highest single-game total in NBA history, behind only Wilt Chamberlain's 100. He led the league in scoring in 2005–06 and 2006–07 and won the 2008 MVP. He finished with 33,643 points, fourth on the league's all-time list at his retirement, and was an 18-time All-Star.

Kobe and his father: a basketball family

Kobe's father, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, was a 6′9″ forward who played parts of eight NBA seasons with the 76ers, Clippers and Rockets, according to the AP obituary published when he died in July 2024. That makes the father about three inches taller than his famous son. Joe later played nearly a decade in Italy and France, which is why Kobe spent much of his childhood in Italy, in Rieti, Reggio Calabria, Pistoia and Reggio Emilia, before the family returned to Philadelphia.

The family connection runs further. Kobe's mother, Pam, is the sister of former NBA player John "Chubby" Cox. His father named him after Kobe beef, which he had seen on a restaurant menu.

The father-son height gap is a nice illustration of how roles and positions are not simply dictated by height. Joe, at 6′9″, played forward in the 1970s and 1980s. Kobe, three inches shorter, became a shooting guard and, with his ball-handling, effectively a primary creator. Growing up around his father's professional teams in Italy, he learned guard skills early, which suited the frame he eventually grew into.

Kobe and Shaq

The Shaquille O'Neal partnership is the most famous height pairing of Kobe's career. Shaq was about 18 cm taller and far heavier, and the two led the Lakers to three straight championships from 2000 to 2002. Their contrast in size was part of what made the team so hard to defend: a 7′1″ center demanding double teams in the post and a 6′6″ wing punishing the defense when it collapsed. Their relationship was famously tense, as has been widely documented, but on the court the size combination was formidable.

Kobe and Jordan

The Michael Jordan comparison followed Kobe throughout his career, and height is part of why. Both were listed at 6′6″ with similar listed weights, so they shared nearly identical frames. Kobe borrowed heavily from Jordan's footwork and fadeaway, and analysts often noted how their highlight reels mirrored each other. With identical listings, any difference between them was a matter of style and skill, not size.

Kobe and Gasol

After O'Neal was traded in 2004, the Lakers rebuilt around Kobe, and the 2008 trade for Pau Gasol, about 17 cm taller, produced back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. Kobe was Finals MVP both times. Once again a 6′6″ guard was paired with a 7-footer, a template that defined both phases of his championship career.

The Redeem Team: Kobe among Olympic teammates

Kobe won Olympic gold with the United States in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London. The 2008 team, known as the "Redeem Team" after the disappointments of 2004 and 2006, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, making Kobe a two-time inductee. The roster gives a useful snapshot of how a 6′6″ guard compared with the best players of his era. The figures below are this site's.

2008 Olympic teammate Height (site data) Difference vs Kobe
Chris Bosh 211 cm (6′11″) +13 cm
Dwight Howard 208 cm (6′10″) +10 cm
LeBron James 206 cm (6′9″) +8 cm
Carmelo Anthony 203 cm (6′8″) +5 cm
Kobe Bryant 198 cm (6′6″) —
Dwyane Wade 193 cm (6′4″) −5 cm
Jason Kidd 193 cm (6′4″) −5 cm
Chris Paul 183 cm (6′0″) −15 cm

Kobe sat almost exactly in the middle of that roster by height, and his role reflected it. He was the team's go-to perimeter defender on the opponent's best guard and its designated closer in tight moments, most famously in the gold-medal game against Spain, where he made key baskets late in the fourth quarter. On a team built around taller forwards like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and quick guards like Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade, a 6′6″ wing who could guard either type of player was the connective piece.

Kobe and the 1996 draft class

Kobe's draft class included several future stars of very different sizes. Allen Iverson, the first pick, was listed at 6′0″, about 15 cm shorter than Kobe. Steve Nash, taken 15th, was listed on this site at 190 cm, and Ray Allen, the fifth pick, at 196 cm. Kobe, at 198 cm and only 17, was the tallest of that group of guards. The fact that three of the class's future Hall of Fame guards stood within about 8 cm of each other while Iverson sat far below shows how wide the range of successful guard heights can be.

Compared with the average American man

Kobe was born in 1978. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimates that American men born in 1976 averaged about 177.5 cm (5′10″).

Comparison Height Kobe's difference
Average US man, 1956 cohort (NCD-RisC) 177.2 cm (5′10″) +20.8 cm
Average US man, 1976 cohort (NCD-RisC) 177.5 cm (5′10″) +20.5 cm
Average Italian man, 1976 cohort (NCD-RisC) 176.5 cm (5′9½″) +21.5 cm
Kobe Bryant (NBA) 198 cm (6′6″) —

Kobe stood about 20 cm (8 inches) taller than the average American man of his generation, comfortably beyond the 99th percentile. His childhood in Italy adds a second comparison: Italian men of his generation are of very similar average height to Americans, so in either country he would have been exceptionally tall from his teenage years onward. You can explore the American distribution on our United States average height page.

Weight and build across his career

NBA.com lists Kobe at 212 pounds. As a 17-year-old he was notably slight, which is why he made a point of adding muscle before the draft. Over his long career he was reported at a range of weights from season to season, as most players are. A lighter frame suited the quickness of his early years, while added strength helped him post up smaller guards later on. At 198 cm, 212 pounds corresponds to a body mass index of about 24.5, typical of a powerful wing.

Legacy and honors

Kobe retired after the 2015–16 season, and in December 2017 the Lakers retired both of his numbers, 8 and 24, making him the only player to have two numbers retired by one franchise. He won an Academy Award in 2018 for the animated short Dear Basketball. He and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on January 26, 2020. He was posthumously elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020, with the ceremony held in May 2021, and the NBA renamed its All-Star Game MVP award in his honor. Los Angeles marks August 24, or 8/24 to match his two jersey numbers, as Kobe Bryant Day, and two statues of him now stand outside the Lakers' arena, Crypto.com Arena.
